The whole experience was incredible. It wasn't just that the food was delicious but the staff were super friendly and welcoming. We had a great time eating delicious food and the best dessert I've had in a while and on top of that, a super friendly and accommodating staff. Their desserts are amazing, the cakes are baked to perfection with the right balance of moisture and density. We had a great time and definitely will be back again if visiting the area.

Interesting combination of a bar, cafe, restaurant, with a very bistro kind of vibe. Pleasant, comfortable environment, with a very upscale feel, full of natural light. Eclectic menu choices with a lot of good choices, and everything we tried was excellent. Croque monsieur was huge, and unlike what I've had in France, but delicious nonetheless. Service is friendly, but we had a long wait before getting our food. The place has such a nice feel, we didn't really care. Deserts are exceptional, as was the cappuccino. We will definitely go back.

They were able to get us a table in 15 minutes. The service was so friendly and helpful, especially on a busy Christmas weekend. Our food was amazing. My Croque Monsier (ham, gruyere, dijoninaise, grilled parmesan-crusted broche bread) was scrumptious. Our daughter, who is gluten-free, went with the Salmom Apple Salad (pan seared king salmon, mixed greens, gala apples, honey roasted pecans, fontina cheese, pomegranate, pumpkin seads, and apple maple vinegrette dressing) She said it was the best Salad she has ever had! My husband had the BBQ Brisket Sandwich (braised and smoked beef brisket, chipotle, clowslaw, grand central brioche bum, with fries) he ate the whole thing! It was delicious.
We shouldn't have, but we did have dessert. They shared the Cre'meux for two (flourless chocolate torte with toasted Italian meringue) and I had the Cherry Bomb ( chocolate cake, liquor soaked cherry center, chocolate glaze) with a cup of their home made Caramel ice cream. These were absolutely sinfully yummy! Definitely make a stop here. We will for sure!

Papa Haydn is one of the best special occasion restaurants you can go to in Portland for a nice lunch or cozy dinner. The jazz on Sundays and Wednesdays makes this place special within its own right but the cakes and desserts sets it apart from all others. This place is definitely pricey which is why I wouldn't come here consistently. The portions for some dishes can be small and leaving you wanting a bit more but overall, I absolutely this restaurant and will be coming back for as long as it's open!

If you have never been, definitely go. The desserts are done absolutely amazing and taste soo good. Pictured Lemon Tart, Cacao de ore, and Raspberry Gatue
The Picky Eater
Can’t speak for service as we ordered delivery. One of the best desserts I have had! The apricot cake was so delicious! We tried 6 different desserts (don’t judge 😂, only took pictures of 3) that was my favorite. The chocolate cake is also very good. My friend enjoyed the lemon cake not pictured, but thought it could use a little more lemon flavor.
Lila C
Raspberry gateau is wonderful, awesome! Rich chocolate with fresh raspberry!
Chicken sandwich is beyond my expectation, crispy outside, juicy and tender inside, one bit you know you are having great food here.
The staff are nice and warm, Edgar is a great guy, he is also smiling and caring, makes me feel so welcomed and warm, appreciate his great service!
Beautiful environment.

Phenomenal desserts but don’t pass is the Croque monsieur with French onion soup! So delicious! They have a wide selection of top notch desserts so anything you pick will be amazing. I love the chocolate layer cake. Yum! They have multiple locations so you can find one on your side of town.
Joclyn
One of my favorite places in Portland. Enjoyed 45th celebrating menu. Always great!

Went there for our anniversary dinner.
Have been enjoy the cakes from Papa Hayden for years but this is the first time we decide to try out their dinner menu.
Here are my thoughts:
1. Drinks
Drink menu is decent. Cocktails selections are quite good, good number of beers on tap, wine listing is average.
2. Food
Has a good coverage of global cruise from French, Italian, Japanese to American. On the plus side, you can pretty much get what you are looking for, but on the downside, you might not get the most authentic food from that region.
3. Dessert
Easily the best dessert in town. Hands down.
We ordered some tuna poke, French onion soup and Croque monsieur. The cheese in the French onion soup was not melted which was disappointing. The rest were quite good actually.
Service was good. Our waiter was very tentative and friendly.
Overall 4 star. And price was reasonable.

The most amazing desserts! They taste even better than they look!!

Delicious PNW food with a spin and amazing desserts! Been many times over the past decade. They have the best paella in the area and the halibut is some of the best I’ve had as well. The salads are unique and refreshing, love the one with grapes but the beet salad is yummy to! You can’t leave without dessert, my go to is baked Alaska. Service is always wonderful. Reservations are easy to make and they often honor requests. Park in the lot behind the building. Pricing is appropriate for the quality.
The main restaurant use to be a tad cozier, I think they could warm up the ambiance a bit more as folks shift to more dine in vs take out but not a big deal because a window seat let’s you watch the bustle of 23rd or you can be by the fire (just ask)! 😃
Kyle
We went for deserts. The german chocolate cake was delicious! Service was terrible and it a very loud place when busy.
Martina Ruseva
Came here around 3:30pm on a Sunday and had to only wait for about 10mins to get seated. They have an excellent selection of deserts and I highly recommend their French onion soup. The vibe is classy yet casual.

This place has beautiful ambiance. The desserts are amazing and decadent. Their coffee is great too. This is a must for dessert, especially if you need a late night place. Perfect for a date. I didn't try the food but the menu looked good. I'll have to go back.
Joey Mersmann
Super cool place a bit pricey. I got a pasta dish it was a little small so I got two more things they were good but got worse the more I ate. That's my fault for eating two much I should have saved a bit or something. Anyway I was also pretty out of it and they appreciated my situation in a very kind way. I also stayed way to long time flies it's a cool place. My bad and thank you staff people. Also not 100 percent sure I paid. Good ice cream
Only reason I took a star is because it costs a lot. All foods expensive though. This is stupid i'm not a food critic don't list to this one just meant to say sorry and thank you to the staff tonight

Bourbon ball, baked alaska two of my favorites there. Best for a sweet tooth. Enjoy polite service with some good music. In the heart of Portland downtown,

A purveyor of sweets and a Portland institution, I had to take my wife and lover of anything sweet to Papa Haydn if for nothing more than to let her feast her eyes on the dessert display case.

It just so happens that it was Happy Hour after an afternoon trip to the majestic and historic Pittock Mansion not far away, so I ordered a couple of IPAs ($4.75 - Happy Hour) to satisfy the server's requirement of ordering two drinks in order to get Happy Hour pricing on menu items. It seemed a bit gauche to force the issue verbally, insisting on the drink order minimum before we could order from the menu, but c'est la vie. We sat on the 23rd Avenue sidewalk and watched as beautiful people and animals pranced by.

We had a sampling from the menu, starting with Kimchi Fries ($4.50) - hand cut fries with grilled kimchi, thai basil, cilantro and korean aioli ($4.50), Croque Monsieur ($7.75) - ham and aged gruyere on parmesan butter crust, and Croque Madame ($7.75) - turkey breast and aged gruyere on parmesan butter crust.

The fries were plentiful, hot and savory, the best value of the bunch. My wife and I reversed roles, she having the croque monsieur (literally "Mister Crunch") and me the croque madame ("Mrs. Crunch"). Both sandwiches were large with three portions dipped in "Good To Go" egg batter and deep fried ala Monte Cristo, but without the powdered sugar. We shared, giving one of the three portions to the other so that we could taste everything. The croques were delicious although a bit expensive for a simple sandwich on a Happy Hour menu with no accompaniments.

The service was good and the ambience decent, it is not Paris after all, so for a little under $30 plus tip we had a streetside table and were well satiated. Not the best Happy Hour I have experienced since moving to Portland, we may return although to nearly $10 price tag for a slice of cake (or other dessert) seems a bit extreme. The croques were very heavy, so we did not have room for sweets on this visit. Maybe we will focus our attention, funds, and taste buds strictly on their wonderful, expensive desserts next time.

CombatCritic Gives Papa Haydn 6 Bombs Out Of 10 ... More Bombs Are Better!

Just a brilliant venue to come for desert. And the only downside is the wait given it's tremendous popularity. And while the offerings may at first appear "standard", the bar is set high meaning you'll enjoy every mouthful...

Always fun , good food, people watching, menu and waiters. Always a good choice😺😎😺. Evan street musicians, doggie watching, but no kitties. We'll have to bring our short hair Persians

A Portland fixture. Papa Haydn is known for their exemplary desserts and for good reason. Best carrot cake I've ever had. Their French onion soup is wonderful as well. Never had a bad meal here.

Always love Papa Haydn, this long-standing dessert place serves up many varieties of delicious desserts.
The last trip we were there in the summer, we had baked Alaska, peach cobbler and chocolate cube.
The chocolate cube was delectable -- a thin chocolate shell box housed with chocolate mousse with a side of vanilla ice cream.
The chocolate box was made with single origin Cordillera Cocuy chocolate which was dark, bitter and brittle; contrasted with the eggy, light, creamy, sweet, vanilla ice cream and buffered by this rich chocolate mousse, a true chocolate lover's dessert.
The baked Alaska had banana ice cream with layers of dolce de leche, vanilla sponge cake, chocolate ganache and bruleed meringue as how it should look in this classic old style dessert.
The banana ice cream was delicious and the meringue was nicely chewy.
Although it was not as good as the special order baked Alaska at El Gaucho steak house, this was a great attempt.
Finally the seasonal dessert at the time, peach blackberry cobbler was delicious, piping hot, buttery goodness with a hint of tang from the berries and a hint of rose flavor.
Papa Haydn is a great dessert place that I wish we had in Seattle!

Papa Hayden has always been a classy and delightful spot to visit! Historically known for their delicious desserts, but their food is tasty too!

Hot night - cold service. Beautiful evening, lovely outdoor seating & chicken salad sandwich with a large bone in it. Our server was asked to advise the chef and . . . Nothing. They must depend on tourists rather than locals. A small comment of recognition - even a brief "sorry about that" would have been enough. Pity.
Bgiddings
Which location should I choose???. I have been dining at both restaurants for years. NW, love it the most. In the summer there is nothing better than Sellwood outdoor dining ( the garden and fountain are wonderful). I rarely have a complaint when at the NW location. Consistent is key. Sellwood I have had issues on take out. When this happened I learned they are owned separately. Never would have known. Favorites: Cobb salad, Oregon bay shrimp salad ( this is the one I had an issue with in Sellwood) you don't pay $13.00 for a side salad size and a 1/8 cup of shrimp..., Club sandwich OMG, soup is usually delish, specials are always a hit. Dessert, WHERE DO YOU START? My fav is one of two, Boccone Dolce, Banana Coconut Cream Pie. The dessert list is amazing. I've tried just about all of them. Usually take something home for the kids. See the attached list and drool. This restaurant in both locations is a staple in my book. What I miss are the days of their Salmon Mouse and Corn Beef Hash. I use to drive from Seattle just for the Salmon Mouse. Sunday brunch was never ever a decision, Hash. I wish they would bring both back. Both locations offer a unique setting. Sellwood has an awesome outdoor summer seating. They grow organic vegi's and the garden is fun to view or walk thru. Plus the architectural pieces are perfect for a antique lover to view. NW is hopping. Line to wait in, interesting people watching. Very good cheesecake. Had the best cheesecake when I was visiting Portland, and this place sold it to me. I would eefinitely recommend trying here if you haven't already.
Upsmartin
Overpriced bad food. An unfortunate experience - overpriced bad food and sloppy service. Based on previous reviews, this used to be a good restaurant in the past - not anymore!
I wouldn't be surprised if they changed owners and chef recently. Portland has much better places to offer for a lower price point.
Rianlane
Papa haydn's review. Since Papa Haydn changed ownership, the desserts and main menu has
changed, but not for the better. Prices have doubled and the amounts have decreased in size.
Chad Utz
Great service and great desserts. I would come back again for the desserts.
Dan
Food was over cooked. meat dishes were over cooked. salad tasted like pure vinegar. service was terrible. he spilled beer all over a person at our party and didn't validate anything. way too overpriced. really disappointed
Lisa N
This restaurant was very disappointing. It was too loud to hear anyone at our table and none of the food we got was very good. The fries were rock hard and the "green" salad had cheese on it. I definitely won't be going back.
Will And Telia
PAPA PLEASED. If you find yourself strolling along 23rd and happen to have a sweet tooth needing a fix then I would definitely recommend Papa H. Before you walk in the door I suggest you do a few things: prep your palate, adjust your belt, and roll your sleeves up, because you will be in for an explosion of flavortastic- sweetliciousness(new word!).

The environment was nice and relaxing, yet socially exciting at the same-time on the sunday afternoon that we went. Not knowing what to expect, I headed through the doors and to my surprise like a glowing box of treasure I got my first glimpse of the dessert showcase! I must have looked like one of those sucker-fish you see in fish tanks stuck to the glass eating algae? Before I knew it my wife was prying me off of the case with that look of embarrassment. The staff was friendly and attentive, and most of all helpful when it came time to deciding what dessert to choose. I was equally pleased with not only presentation, but overall execution of the plate. My wife and I (usually sharing) took one bite and decided we would have to battle if anyones fork traveled across the plate line. Very good experience, I will definitely go back for more.
Doug Bruhnke
Dessert Heaven. This is an off-the-charts lunch and dessert place - ideal for that 3pm-in-the-afternoon coffee or beer with a banana coconut cream pie slice the size of your head. Clean, great service, free Wi-Fi and not very expensive - on Nob Hill. Wonderful! Highly recommended.
Reality Bites
Who's your daddy. A great place for lunch or dinner. Most of the time consistent with quality of meals and deserts...always a treat to the eye and mouth too. Good coffee and latte. Servers are attentive but not overly so. If you want to relax and not feel rushed this is a good choice. We like many menu items and seasonal selections. Would like to see the mini gnocchi return with fresh peas and butter....yummy. Burgers are a winner too.
Brandon
Amazing! I love their sweet treats! Will return'
Shantanu Basu
Eaten there just twice; good experience. Go there often for desserts that are to die for.
PV
Excellent Dessert. We had dinner and dessert there and loved it all. While I would most recommend it for dessert, the dinner was actually quite good also. The desserts however were unbelievable.

I like the fact that they serve dinners because it gives you a chance to have some choices if not everyone is hungry at the same time. Also there is such an amazing array of choices.

One option of course is to make an evening of dining and then saunter over to Hayden's under the guise of ordering a coffee and there you go....no one will be able to resist a dessert!
Lauren
Is there really anything better.... .. than a glass of Prosecco and the largest slice of delicious cake ever? I think not. This is a great place to go with your girls after a little afternoon of shopping to indulge and gossip. Definitely one of my faves!
Tammy
If everything in the desert case looks too good to eat you've figured out their secret- "make it so beautiful they won't think about what they're eating." Enjoy the beauty, but don't bother ordering. All bark (and hype), no bite (no, really, don't bite into it, you'll only be disappointed).
Bryan Alan Atkinson
Great late night dessert. We went here for my girlfriend's birthday with 11 other girls, and we had a lot of fun. Everyone picked a different dessert, and it was all delicious. Friendly waiter as well.
Patrick Russell
Wasn't satisfied with my dinner entree. I had the duck breast, atop dandelion greens with a blueberry reduction. The duck was under-seasoned and tough. So I salt and peppered it myself. Same with my girlfriend's--she had the salmon, and we had to salt and pepper it ourselves. It was also a bit undercooked. Overall, I say over-priced and bland. To be fair, it may be because we ate on a Monday night. And yet, we really never return because of our experience. However, the dessert looks great. I think that THAT is why this restaurant is rated so highly.
NancyG
Dependable. Great lunch spot and wonderful place for a dessert after dinner
Hallie
Mmm. Not crazy about the meals, but how can you go wrong with any of the desserts?!
Shellielyden
Brunch yes, dinner no. I keep trying this restaurant but prefer not to eat here for lunch or dinner. I like the coffee and desserts. Lunch and dinner tend to be on the greasy/oily side. I will not typically eat here unless it's for brunch. Service is good and we always get a seat.
Curiouscook
Visting PDX, loved this place for dessert. It has been a while but I really loved this place.
Kelly
LOVE. Papa Haydn has been the go to place for birthdays in my family since I was younger. I don't have much experience with the food, more the desserts. Although I've had their caesar salad with chicken and it is very good. I'm picky with caesar dressings and theirs is very nice, also the Parmesan chips are great!
Alot of people on here complain about the pricing of desserts, but when you take into consideration that you are getting a quality dish that is pretty much half the size of an average pie, there is NOTHING to complain about. This is the #1 place for any dessert need!
Yaruba
Great at all times. We have coming been here for Breakfast, lunch, dinner and just desert and coffee. I must say that Papa Hayden has always been consistent in their service and quality of their food. The desert is especially amazing here. Double chocolate cake is unreal. I always bring out of town guests here. Highly recommended
Joe D
Really good food. I love the two locations, great food. I just wish I could afford eating here more often. A little spendy for what it is, but still great!
JTuftsy
Massive dessert cakes. Dense, rich, and a bit overwhelming, but the environment is so pleasant that if you're going to sit for a while to come out of your dessert coma it's a nice place to go. Get something chocolatey with a banyuls or a mousse layer cake with a very foamy macchiato.
Htiafrats
Never Returning!. Bad service, and bad food. And not family friendly.
Emily
Desserts are a Yes Please with a Cherry on Top. I have only had the desserts here, but each and every one I have tried left me muy satisfecha, actually overly satisfecha because I couldn't stop eating....

Read so-so reviews about the food, but haven't taken that risk yet.
Amelie
Good dessert. I like to come here for dessert only, i've tried their dinner before and it was kind of disappointing. but it's still a great dessert place!
A Craft
Desserts AMAZING. I take people here for coffee and Dessert after dinner. I would recommend the dessert but not dinner. Many of my out of state business clients adore this place.
Fd-45
I agree. go for dessert only. I would say their food was okay (for the price).
But definitely try their dessert.
Catherine
OUTSTANDING DESSERT! Portland Institution!. I have been going to this restaurant since my teen years to eat the amazing French Onion Soup (Seriously, I dream about it now that I live out of state) and the Baked Alaska are amongst the MANY delicious choices. I tried the Berry Cheesecake last time I was in town and was again, not disappointed. The outdoor seating is great for the summertime but be prepared to wait on the weekends. Luckily if you put your name on the list there are plenty of great places to browse while waiting!
Rita
Desserts. Skip their food (it is ok, but not great), go directly to dessert, this is what is wonderful about this place.
Leo Ragsac
Desserts. Desserts are out of this world, not so for the dinners..kinda pricey and you can get a better dinner elswhere on 23rd more reasonable!
Nicole
Amazing. I have never reviewed anything online before, but this was honestly the best meal I've ever eaten. I had the chicken breast and apricot chutney, which I got with fingerling potatoes and spinich (the sides from another dish). I always order the chicken at restaurants, and this is the first time it has been sublime. It was so moist and flavorful - if chicken always tasted like this it would be everyone's favorite meal. The potatoes and spinich were perfect as well. We had a very sweet red-haired waitress, and a beautiful dessert as well. It was definitely crowded, but overall it was a wonderful experience.
Echevrier
Owner rude. I called the owner to tell him about a bad experience at his restaurant. I was extremely polite. His response was so unbelievably rude, it's hard to fathom that he actually a business owner. During our very brief conversation, he interrupted me twice, and ended the call by saying, "We don't need your business." Then he hung up. I felt like a practical joke victim. I've never seen a situation handled so poorly in my life.
Kate
Dessert. Some of the best dessert around town. Can take awhile to get in on weekend evenings.
Emily
Great dessert place for a group. I agree with the previous reviewer who suggested going for dessert only. Papa Haydn's is a good place to bring your parents for dinner or a group of people for dessert. The food isn't exceptional, but there's something on the menu for everyone. The desserts are good and large enough to share.
Tracie
NW 23rd's sweetest. Best Boccone Dolce!!! If you are a fan of Chantilly Cream..you will absolutely love this!!!

Papa Haydn has fairly decent lunch/dinner menu..a bit spendy and not all that worth it..but the desserts are to die for! All other Portland dessert spots pale in comparison!
LoG
Desserts maybe, dinner no.. A friend and myself ordered dinner in the adjacent Joe bar. I wasn't impressed. The chicken was cooked well, but it was a gigantic cut and there were hardly any sides to speak of, besides a few undercooked cubes of potatoes and sprigs of garnish. My friends tuna was also cooked well, but unremarkable in flavor and only a few spoonfuls of garnish, not worth $27 by any stretch of the imagination. Finally, since the bar was FREEZING and after waiting 15 minutes for the server, we went elsewhere for dessert. Overall, the bread and wine were the only satisfying part of the meal.
Syl Porter
Chicken club is excellent. All other desserts pale in comparison to boccone dolce.
Mike K
Over-priced!. Deserts were great, but quite spendy. Food was just as spendy, but not worth it. Go somewhere else for food, then go here for the deserts.
KJ
Desert. It's just desert. Nice staff, very helpful, and patient.
John
Went there for after dinner dessert/coffee and was extremely surprised. Excellent assortment and great drinks. Just look beyond the stereotypical Audi driving, Gap kids shopping locale.
Jonni A.
Fav"). Love the Sellwood location better but with PH you simply cant go wrong. There desert is well know in PDX and the food is every bit as good. Great late night stop for desert and wine.

John
Eternal M's Optimist
Amazing brunch. Two huge pieces of perfectly breaded fried chicken and waffles on a bed of collard greens and bacon . . . nuff said
KN
Go for desert only. The deserts are out of this world.

The dinner is overpriced and not very good. Eat dinner somewhere else then come to Papa Haydn for desert.
World Food Cruiser
Papa Haydn is an elegant restaurant, more so than I expected but then it shouldn't have been that surprising given its high cost menu items. I also expected at least a moderate level of diners but saw only one couple present. It was still early
Meagan
Papa Haydn is the place to go in Portland for dessert. They have a location on the East side and the West side. Dessert Case at Papa Haydn West Baked Alaska Autumn Meringue 6 Layer Glace Cassata I had the pleasure of going here twice last week. I had actually never been here before and there was one near the violin shop I was going to. So, after hearing about it, I decided it was time to finally try it. It didn't take long to figure out why it's so popular. Humming Bird Cake I split a lunch with my friend, because we wanted to make sure to have room for dessert! This is half of the Reuben, which was more than enough. Papa Haydn has good food too. Papa Haydn - East The restaurant on the East side was opened in 1978 and was remodeled in 2007. They did a great job preserving the beauty of the building and added a heated patio and bar. Papa Haydn East 5829 SE Milwaukie Ave Portland, OR 97202
Portland Palate
This popular spot in Portland has been serving up delicious cuisine for almost 30 years! Papa Haydn’s is one of Portland’s most popular destinations for dessert. They also cook up an amazing brunch, lunch and dinner spread.

2:30 PM: Take advantage of the rare Portland sunshine and head to NW 23rd Street for some l-u-n-c-h…and dessert at Papa Haydn’s: We were FAMISHED; I like my butter smooth and my bread hot and crusty. A+, Papa H!

After Super Server Man told us the story of how the chef who created these babies went around cooking them in Easy Bake ovens, I was willing to give it a try. And it was good.

Here’s something crazy about this place. Even if you order nothing, they give you a bunch of pastries right away

Papa Hadyn is famous for its dessert, so if you are already too full from excessive happy hour snacking be sure to cover your eyes on the way out the door. Either that or take it to go too.
