Review Salt & Straw - Portland

I am not exaggerating when I say this is my favorite I’ve cream on earth. As someone with lactose issues, I greatly appreciate having vegan ice cream options. The best part is that it is not just sorbet, which I hate. The recent upcycled food series was awesome, and the summer berry options are always legit. The basaltic and anything with goat cheese is amazing!

They really know how to do ice cream! Best variety of flavors. They even have several vegan flavors. You can try any & every flavor before deciding. Super friendly staff. It is really popular so be patient, but totally worth the wait!

Fantastic and friendly staff, who were so patient with my sampling and questions! They lived up to their reputation. I liked that some of their flavours veer away from the conventional - like the blue cheese+pear or the cocoa pulp gelato! Shout out to Andrew!

Delicious ice cream flavors! Super unique, creamy, and tasty. I got the goat cheese marionberry habañero. My friends got the birthday cake with blackberries. It was all so memorable and delicious.

Delicious Ice Cream Shop. Friendly Staff. Fast Service. Clean Establishment. Good Prices. Large Selection of Tasty Flavors. Their rotation of specialty flavors is always a nice time to try new things. Overall this company goes the extra mile to help our world and provide delicious ice cream.

I own an ice cream shop in another state. Salt and Straw is great. They have unique flavors and a good vibe. I like some of their flavors, but some are so bizarre that they're not delicious. I also think they serve their ice cream a little too warm (melted). Overall though, I really like coming here when I'm in town and I admire their business.

Well, you need to try this place if you are in the area. The innovative flavors and the willingness of the staff to let you try them as many times as you like was welcoming. Must have icecream.

My #1 favorite to get is sea salt caramel with waffle cone, smell of waffle walking in the store was great, long line but the line moved along so no big deal, u can sample again which was great. My brother order cold brew cashew pecan was good but he said needed more coffee favor. 7/4 Only place that open and near by, seasonal flavor! Berry yummy!

Our go-to neighborhood ice cream shop. They have all the classic flavors and traditional stuff- but also awesome creative flavors like blue cheese and pear ice cream. Highly recommend.

Possibly the best ice cream store in the world. Incredible flavours with lots of innovation. So impressed with them I bought their recipe book at Powell’s. I’m very lucky to be staying nearby and I’ve been able to walk down every night to try all the flavours. It’s always packed with people queuing up down the street. They’ve inspired me to open my own ice cream shop in Australia. These are my people.

Love this place. Great selection of exotic ice cream flavours and friendly/upbeat staff.

One of these days I’ll maybe try the olive oil ice cream.

Hand down - best ice cream place I've ever been to when it comes down to flavours. They are so unique. Zucchini bread? Lavender Honey? Some more traditional vanilla or coconut mint chip? They have it all. Zucchini bread may sound strange to be an ice cream flavour but they made it work! I can proudly say I ordered that one and enjoyed it on their waffle cone. Mmm. We got in line before it formed out the door so the waiting time wasn't bad. Staff are friendly and efficient. Double thumbs up!

Looooooooong lineups, but worth the wait. The carrot carrot cake is fantastic, huge chunks of carrot cake and lots of spices. The sea salt & caramel is AMAZING!!!

After 2 failed attempts at having salt & straw ice cream due to mile long queues on both occasions. We were finally lucky to get straight to the counter on a hot summer afternoon. The flavours are interesting and the ice cream itself rich & creamy. After trying a few flavour I settled on the vanilla bean ice cream which was absolutely yum!

YUMMM. Worth the long wait!
AMMMMMMAZING!!!!

Best ice cream in town. We brave the 100' lines in summer and the 30degree temps (but no lines) in winter.

Im not a huge fan of some of their staples (the salted whatever and the olive oil somethingor other) - but the strawberry-blackpepper paired with a scoop of vanilla in a waffle cone is a little bit of heaven.

The people are nice, the shop is neat and clean. This is a family favorite for years to come.

Usuals: almond brittle something, coffee bourbon, sea salt and caramel.
Friendly staff like all S&S, fast line than NE23rd.

Yum!. Brittle and salted ganache ice cream was to die for! Love this place.

Finally got a chance to try this. Yep long line about 30 minute wait. Fun time in line as we talked with fellow line standees. I had the cinnamon snickerdoodle. Fantastic. Chunks of cookie and lots of cinnamon. Waffle cone was fresh and crisp. Worth the wait.

Favorite ice cream ever. When visiting Portland this past September I had the distinct pleasure of trying their Salted Ganache/Almond Brittle ice cream. This was hands-down the best ice cream I've ever had in my entire life. Good thing I don't live anywhere near there. I'd end up weighing 300 pounds!

My husband and I wanted to see what the fuss is about. The price is ridiculous! $8 for a scoop?!? Surprised to see so many white people in the NoPo location, and then we looked at the staff and understood. The ice cream itself is eclectic but taste wise not good. Won't go back!

Favorite: Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbon

MMMMMMMMMMM. This is the best ice cream i have ever had. we had the honey and lavender flavour. it was delicious and sweet without being heavy. the server encouraged sampling and was very helpful .

If you haven't been to Salt & Straw.... ... go now. Seriously, just drop what you're doing and get yourself a scoop of delicious, quirky ice cream in a fresh, warm waffle cone. I've tried the almond brittle with salted chocolate ganache, snickerdoodle, and the seasonal citra hops and apricot and all are glorious (though the almond brittle could have benefited from smaller chunks of ganache). They also sell (overpriced, yet cool) candy and pretty delicious giant cookies. It's really a blessing that this place is on the other side of town or else I'd be there every night spending all my money and putting on the pounds.

Met expectations. On my second trip to Portland I was excited to try Salt and Straw after hearing Portland locals rave about it. I specifically wanted to try the chevre malonberry habanero jam flavor. All of the ingredients sounded awesome. The ice cream was delicious but I was honestly expecting it to be a little more spicy since habaneros are generally known to be hot as hell. I also only waited fifteen minutes or so which i was not expecting. I definitely wanted to go again and try there horchata sorbet but didn't have time. I will be going back.

Second best ice cream I have ever had. We chose this location because the lines were about 95% shorter than the 23rd Street location. parking is more plentiful too, although the neighborhood isnt quite as nice. staff were more than friendly and happy to explain each flavor and give out lots of samples. some of the flavors were very unique and others were not. the prices were decent. I would go again but I wouldnt stand in line for an hour like some people seem to do.

Quite possibly the best ice cream I have ever had! The sea salt with carmel ribbons is to die for. Other favors included honey lavender, kaffir lime an lemongrass with fish sauce carmel (much better than it sounds), and buttermilk corn sorbet.

Ice Cream Dream. Because we hadnt already expanded our waistlines enough next door at Bollywood Theater, we conjured up the gall to order a couple of scoops from the Salt & Straw. I had their Chocolate with Brownie chunks, while ye ol' wifes head settled on Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons. What can I say? This was some lusciously, delicious Ice Cream. We agreed that this would become part of any future visit to the Bollywood Theater. Excellent stuff!
Mark And Clare
Great fun-ice cream not so good. I picked the special, Bollywood Theatre, an Indian concoction that was fun to try but I didn't like it enough to finish-the salt and caramel would have been a better option.

Best icecream shop I have ever been to!! Unique flavors that are surprisingly amazing. Try it, you will not be disappointed.
Jimmyg50
Unique Flavors. How can you NOT like this place? Adventurous blends of flavors you wouldn't expect to find in a sundae. Ya GOTTA try it.
David
Wow!. What unique flavors. Honey balsamic strawberry black pepper. Pear with blue cheese. Melon and prosciutto. Sea salt with caramel ribbons. Brown ale with bacon. Hibiscus sherbet. Honey lavender. Cinnamon snicker doodle. Banana with spicy monkey caramel & Oregon walnuts. And, so many more to mention.

In the 30 minutes I was there this afternoon I counted over 100 people who came to try some creamy delicious ice cream that you just cannot find anywhere else. Plus, they have some special shakes, sundaes, floats, and extras!

From a one to ten, a 10 most certainly. Will be back for more.

Bold Flavors, Delicious Ice Cream. Best find so far. Lemon basil sorbet, pear blue cheese ice cream. I tried almost all of their ice creams, and couldn't decide which to get because they all were amazing. They use fresh local, and fair trade ingredients, as well as support the local community. Staff was friendly and talkative. I don't think I will ever find a better scoop of ice cream.

I'll be back soon!

Salt & Straw's handmade ice cream is made with all-natural dairy and local ingredients, as well as some imported ingredients from handpicked farms and producers worldwide. The result - ice cream so good (they use 17% butterfat, for a nice, rich and creamy base) that people from around the world visit to get a taste of their ice cream, sometimes even waiting in very long lines! Our family thought the ice cream was so good that we ended up going twice! The first time we went was on a Friday evening around 6pm. There was no line and we walked right in. The second time we went on a Monday night at about 8pm, and the line was about 30 people deep! We were not about to let a long line discourage us from indulging in s

Salt & Straw is the go-to ice cream place in Portland. They have a few locations around the city and are usually packed in the summer time. Even for being out of season, Janey and I experienced relatively long lines. You can smell a Salt & Straw location before you even see it thanks to the fact that they make their own waffle cones. Nothing is more welcoming than the smell of waffle cone, nothing!

Salt & Straw is on every possible list of best ice creameries in the country, and its ‘farm-to-cone’ mentality is the reason. Before my visit, I was aware of rising ice cream flavor trends like lavender and olive oil and rose water. However, Salt & Straw’s flavors still blew my little ice-cream loving mind. Every single flavor had at least one ingredient I had never seen in ice cream before. There is nothing these clever makers won’t mix into their cream.

Even late night the queue extended out the door and it never shortened in the time we were there. No matter because it was only slightly chilly, and we had great undiscovered talent signing up storm for us this evening. I wondered how it was Salt & Straw is the ice cream parlor where the hip and young hang out for a cone

After waiting in line and sampling a few of the flavors, I ended up choosing Almond brittle with Salted ganache on a fresh waffle cone. Oh man, this thing was amazing. Have you ever taken a bit into something and have your eyes light up because it was so good. On a different level with any other item in that category. This ice cream was that for me. No doubt the best ice cream I’ve ever had. Nothing is even close.

If you’re in the PDX and ain’t at Salt & Straw you better believe me and come through. Flavors and quality that made me go 0 to 100+ for that farm to cone. Don’t be scared of the line, go with your bae so you can have ice cream conversations. Thank me later! I’ve been to ice cream joints all along the west coast and no one makes headlines like Salt & Straw. Can you bring back that uni mint chocolate chip though? Nothing was the same. Quality is high, sugar is low, and butterfat is 17%, but flavors are not the usual—think strawberry-honey-balsamic with black pepper or pear with blue cheese, but also almond brittle with chocolate ganache (my delicious choice). Only all-natural dairy and the best local, sustainable, and organic ingredients are used.

Salt & Straw on Urbanspoon

So hard to pick flavors since I wanted to try everything, but in the end I got sea salt with caramel ribbons and almond brittle with salted ganache. Both were amazing!

I remember the confused look on people’s faces when I told them that I planned on visiting Oregon. They tried to sound interested, like “oh, that sounds…um…cool.” But little did they know that Portland is actually one of the most beautiful and uniquely fascinating places I’ve ever visited (and I travel a lot!!!). Sure, there’s lots of crunchy granola lovin’ hippies and non-conformists, but I appreciated the open-minded culture and creative cuisine that the city had to offer. From Olive Oil ice cream to Double Bubble Doughnuts, Portland is offering up some strangely delicious combinations that you can’t find anywhere else on the planet! As usual, my trip was centered around food (obviously!), with hiking and sightseeing sprinkled in between. It was nearly impossible to narrow it down, but here are some of the highlights from my foodie excursion to the Pacific Northwest. Voodoo Doughnut is not only one of the biggest tourist attractions in Portland, it is one of the most popular doughnut

I found Salt & Straw ice cream shop while doing my research and added it to our list of 'Places To Try.' Then, just a few days before we left, Saveur arrived and named Salt & Straw one of 16 American Ice Cream Shops We Love , so then we really wanted to try it. We had to wait until the last day of vacation for it to be warm enough for us to want to try ice cream! Thank goodness for GPS or else I am not sure we would have found it! There are several locations. We went to the one on NE Alberta Street. You have to park on the street and we were lucky to find a spot close by. It seemed like a lot of people were out for ice cream at 2 pm on a sunny Thursday. There were so many flavors I wanted to try. Cinnamon Snickerdoodle. Honey Lavender. Sea Salt & Caramel. SP didn't want to try a sample of four scoops (I really wanted to, but didn't think I could eat as much as I would have had to eat) so we settled for sharing a half scoop of Cho

Salt and Straw is not just normal ice cream. You can tell by the line up that loops the block. Before you write this off as a hyped up hipster hang out made popular by annoying social media “experts,” read on. Located on the same street as the iconic Pine State Biscuits and scrumptious Waffle Window , Salt and Straw keeps in line with Portland’s trademark quirk and charm. The small, quaint ice cream parlor offers the most bizarre and original flavours I’ve ever tried. We had lots of time to decide what we wanted, after all, we were in line for 30 minutes. A popular item was the sampler, a long wooden plank with four little pods for small glass bowls of ice cream. I wonder if they require the customers ordering this item to sit right in front of the picture window so all of us in line could drool and marvel at them while they savoured their diverse selection of ice cream. Yummy ice cream, after 4 quick meals in a short time period. This place was very busy, with tons of different ice creams, you can get them by the scoop, or you can pay $9 and get a flight of ice creams. Great idea, and a good deal especially if you don’t mind sharing. After waiting about 15 minutes, I ordered the Sea Salt Ice Cream with Caramel Ribbon on a cone. It was delicious, very creamy, sweet, and salty. Definitely my flavour of choice, though I think Earnest Ice Creams was a little bit better. The cone was nice and fresh, not super crisp that it’ll just break, it was a bit softer than waffle cones that I’m used to. My friend ordered the flight of four, and our favourite of his bunch was the coffee with bourbon. The honey lavendar was our least favourite, as it was too fragrant and flowery, I guess as it should be. Overall I’d come back. The price wasn’t too expensive, and you can quite a bit of ice cream. You can taste your ice cream before buying,

But I waited and was rewarded with scoops of pear with blue cheese, and honey balsamic strawberry with cracked pepper. This was some of the best ice cream I’ve had in ages. (Yes, I sampled their famous bone marrow and smoked cherry ice cream, but I’ll take my bone marrow straight out of the bone with parsley, thank you.)

On my last day in Portland , I spent the afternoon and early evening with my friend Gordon , another sake lover and overall good guy, and we made several interesting and tasty stops. One of our first stops was to The Meadow , an eclectic shop that sells fresh flowers, finishing salts, chocolates, bitters, wines, apertifs and accessories. Quite an interesting combination, and a clear allure to a food and wine lover such as I. In the spring of 2006, Jennifer Turner Bitterman and Mark Bitterman founded The Meadow and in the fall of 2010, opened a second store in the West Village of New York City . Mark Bitterman is also the author of Salted: A Manifesto on the World's Most Essential Mineral, with Recipes (Ten Speed Press, October 2010). There is much more to salt than just shakers of salt & pepper, and this book goes into great detail. A fine selection of bitters and apertifs, making this a fine destination for mixologists and cocktail lovers. The wine selection contains plenty of smaller
