Review Shenanigans - Portage

Steve Strom
We were looking for a place to eat with outdoor seating on a Wednesday evening. We had never been to Shenanigans so we called ahead to see if there was seating on the patio. The woman we spoke to (Roxanne) told us they WERE going to close early because it was unusually slow, but since we were a family of 5 with 3 little ones they would stay open. When we pulled up, we were hesitant at first because we were the only people there, but we were pretty quickly put at ease. The food was great. Roxanne was friendly and attentive even though she was basically closing up by herself. I honestly didn’t understand why it wasn’t busier, but I’m grateful for it—my kids insisted on running around the patio. After talking to Roxanne and reading some of the negative reviews, I’m thinking the slowness is due to the current nationwide labor shortage and the competition across the street. The place deserves more business than it got tonight IMO.

Bar tender was drunk upon our arrival, was talking inappropriately to my 9 year old, then proceeded to pass out. We were then served by two people who were not employeed at the restaurant (because we put our order in before she passed out) and one of them had a gun. Try explaining all of this to a 9, 7, 6, and a 4 year old child. The owner showed up because someone alerted her to the situation and when we went to check out, we said we weren't paying. She yelled okay bye, thanks Roxanne, you wasted all of this food money cause they don't want to pay. I'll be reporting you all to the BBB.

If great food and atmosphere is what you are looking for, this is the place. I had the mushroom Swiss burger and it was amazing. It had a nice char on the bun and the burger was cooked to perfection. Tish, my waitress, was sweet and made me feel like I was special. I travel a lot for work and it's nice to know a place I can go to for good food and conversation, not to mention their covered patio for the beautiful sunny days. Thank you Tish and Shenanigans. I can't wait to come through again!

I've been coming here for going on two years. The food has gotten progressively better (especially the wings) and the drinks are pretty reasonable. The staff has always been friendly. Love the patio, wish it was open more even on cooler nights under 70. Never really miss an opportunity to swing through if possible. Recommend the bangers an mash. Edit/update- came around here 1-17-21, ordered a rare steak for dinner. Was served...pot roast? I think? The cut was bad, and it was very well done (reference my picture.) Staff is still pretty good.

Not too busy, the bartender Roxxane is a joy to chat with. I had the turkey bacon wrap, which was delicious.

The food was great. I ordered the lake perch with garlic mashed potatoes and vegetable medley. Very tasty and generous portions. However this place only gets 2 stars because the service is poor. I went at 6:30 on a Friday night and they only had one waitress and one cook. So obviously it took a while to get my food and drinks. On top of that, the taps weren't working so there was no draft beer, only bottles and cans. The bartender did her best to serve the entire restaurant by herself. I left her a good tip because I felt bad for her.

Enjoyed an awsome evening with some friends. Our waitress/bartender was a superstar. She was very attentive, helpful, and curious. I am sorry I can't remember her name....possibly Ashley. I enjoyed the Shenanigans burger very much. I am looking forward to my next visit.

Would give 0 stars if able. For starters we waited 20 minutes for someone to come around for our drink orders, would have been acceptable if they were busy but the parking lot was barely occupied. Once the waitress finally came around for our drink and appetizer orders, we didn’t see her back with our drinks for another 15 minutes when our appetizers were done. Who waits until the apps are done to get us drinks? We got fried pickles and chips and salsa. Pickles were alright. Chips and salsa came with a huge bowl of salsa but a very small basket of chips. When we asked for more chips, we were told by the owner we would be charged for another full order. No way I was paying $6 for 12 chips. Our food came relatively quick, but was nothing to brag about. All of us got the Shenanigans burger. Onion ring was soggy as can be, beer cheese you could barely call it beer cheese. Only thing decent about the burger was the beef patty. We are from out of town and we’re very unimpressed with service, food, atmosphere, all of it. Will not be returning.
