Review Uncle Ernie's Pancake House - Portage

I love this little quaint Kalamazoo diner. My waitress Lindsey was super nice. The portions are huge and very affordable. The service was great and so was the atmosphere.

I order the breakfast croissant sandwich and pancakes with blueberries and walnuts. I’ve dined in and ordered take out, the food is just as good either way. Pancakes are outstanding! Loaded but still fluffy. This is my cheat day staple. Great price for great food.

Yum yum yummy is all I can say👍. The breakfast here is amazing and I've noticed a big difference from a decade ago!!!! Keep it coming Uncle Ernie🫶 I had the sausage, egg (over medium), and cheese English muffin, hash browns, and corned beef hash... All were exceptional and decently sized!

My second time here. Local feel from all the regulars this morning. Staff is very friendly and prompt. Corned beef hash here is made in house and is excellent! Pancakes are delicious as well! Can't go wrong here for breakfast. If you are in town and need to place to do some business work or meet up with a co-worker this would be a great spot to come.

Very nice local pancake house, clean and warm services. Many selections and daily special. I ordered a eggs omelet and pancake, it was good and not dry. Just the coffee is not strong enough for us.

It's a diner in a strip mall, but it's got a lot of charm due to the crowd of locals and the amazing wait staff. The corned beef hash was solid, and the pancakes are good, but not great. Overall, a fine choice for a large breakfast.

Small place with quick service and fabulous food. The house made corned beef and hash was amazing! Friendly staff were very attentive but not hovering around the table.

This place has been a breakfast icon in the Kalamazoo area since I was a kid. Just went back this morning (probably 25 yrs. later) and it's still amazing! The food was absolutely delicious (not greasy at all), I loved the menu items offered, the service was top-shelf, and the place was clean as can be! Definitely going to start coming back again!!

Although they were quite busy, there was no wait time. Food was flavorful and of excellent quality. Understandable how they have stayed in business more than 40 years. Service was prompt and friendly! Long time fan of Uncle Ernie's Pancake House!
sincerely, sue
The place was pretty well packed but we were seated immediately in a booth. The blueberry lemon pancakes (special) was very bright, fluffy, and perfectly sweet with a lovely kick from the lemon tart. We also enjoyed the 1/2 nash's hash (special) and recommend the corn beef if you enjoy the meaty flavor. Lovely service from Lisa, we will definitely be coming back again.

The food is great in taste and value. Attentive staff and a homy atmosphere.

Fantastic old fashioned pancake house. Promt service, hot food and friendly staff. Great pancakes. Priced very fairly.

Nice place for a stopping to have breakfast 🥞 in all variants- we had the pancakes which were really good! The French toasts with egg and bacon 🥓 was also good! Nice team and service.

Good breakfast place, satisfied us enough after a 2-hour drive to see off a friend at the airport at 6 AM in the morning. Not too special otherwise. Huge portions, friendly staff, a bit on the salty side.

Hands down the best restaurant you could get breakfast & lunch from! Everything is 5 stars it's clean everywhere in the restaurant, the staff is the friendliest & most kind & to top it off the food is Phonemenal!

When you walk into Uncle Ernie’s you’re transported to small town America. Light Americana adorns the walls, local folk are having loud conversation, and the atmosphere beckons you to simply sit and relax. Lisa, my server, was friendly and on point with coffee refills. My food came out fast - two eggs, four pieces of crisp bacon, and Texas toast - and was exactly as ordered. The prices are below what you might expect these days - I love a good breakfast value! They have an Early Bird special for $4 that cannot be beat. I’ll try it next time. If you’re looking for a good breakfast at a great value, Uncle Ernie is serving up what you want!

Excellent, friendly service. The homemade corned beef was awesome, but you really need to try the potato pancakes! So good with the applesauce!

Great little hole in the wall. Awesome food and great service. It is a busy place (especially on a Sunday) pancakes were very good and the homemade corned beef hash was very tasty. Everything was served hot...like really hot. The servers all help each other out to make this place run quite well.

A family-friendly place to go for breakfast and lunch. Friendly waitresses who treat customers like family. Good food. I always have eggs, bacon, hash browns, and the jr. stack of pancakes. Can't wait for their pumpkin pancakes.

Life is short, eat the pancakes! 🙂 Great breakfast, excellent service! Very hospitable! My favorite breakfast in town!

Great food. Great portions and the crew is very hospitable. #1 breakfast joint in the zoo hands down!

I have been eating breakfast at Uncle Ernies for almost 20 years. It's my go to spot for breakfast, fast, friendly, and well priced. The dining room and restrooms are spotless. Best pancakes in town and I love their omelettes, try the hunters omelet because it has GRAVY!! Not some corporate Mcbreakfast joint, support local small businesses.

The best waffles this side of Belgium! Ordered my bacon “crispy, chewy”, yeah, that’s a thing!

Nice down to earth place to have breakfast and not pay alot of money doing it

We have breakfast at Uncle Ernie's every Sunday that we are home. The wait staff is the friendliest! The "hashes" are to die for and you can't find them anywhere else!
Tracy East
Great food and great service! We have been there several times and have never had a bad meal. And never a long wait to get in either.
Kelli Krzyzanski-Boggio
Best pancakes around! And the bacon is to die for.
Merrick Wilson
Great little breakfast restaurant! Service is second to none.

Decent little greasy spoon. Went here for breakfast once. Nothing to write home about, but cost vs quality is solid. If you want a simple, typical American breakfast experience, go here.

I will not ever go to this place again! !!!! They were featuring Eggs Benedict on top of two crab cakes with a hollandaise sauce. So I got my order and chop down on shell. So hoping that was going to be the only time after a few more bites I got a mouth full of shells so I sent that back. I was so done after that the waitress asked if I wanted something else so I ordered a plain waffle so I take two bites and notice my plate is dirty. My waffle is plain and it had dried up food on the plate I was totally disgusted. Needless to say I WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of these reviews are way, way too high. This place is OK *at best*, with decent food & reasonable prices, but it's not even in the Top 20 breakfast places in the area. Full City, Food Dance, Crows Nest, Cosmos, Nina's, Brite Eyes, Studio Grille, LaRue's, Rykse's - all are better. Just down the road is Cafe Meli, where you can get 10x better food with even bigger portions, and the biggest breakfast menu around.

Home atmosphere. Pancakes are not outstanding, just serviceable. I had one of their hash specialties. Filled me up. Exceptional? nope.

Amazing !!!!!!!. I love Uncle Ernie's. It has your home town atmosphere and is not a chain. The staff are super friendly and the portions you receive are huge. Every time I go I can only eat half of my meal so I bring the other half home and have it the next day. Wonderful new owners :) I would highly recommend going to Uncle Ernie's Pancake House because why would you want to go anywhere else?

The BEST!!!. Our family LOVES Uncle Ernie's! The staff is great and really efficient but their food is amazing. We haven't found one thing that we haven't liked yet and that's definitly not an easy thing, I am known for being extremely picky and never having good luck at restaurants...just ask my family! If you haven't tried Uncle Ernie's you're missing out. Whether you're looking for a new breakfast place or tired of your regular one you won't be dissapointed and they'll have you coming back again and again!

Kathleen deter. Great place to eat! Great food, great service, friendly servers! The owners work there and are willing to take care of any problems, but I don't think you will have any. It is like eating at Gramma's house. Interesting decor, and the hostess was right on the mark with our wait time!
It is a busy place, but we never waited more than 10-15 minutes for a table and about 15 minutes for our food! The servers were all well versed in the menu. Great mom and pop place not a chain!

One of the Best. Uncle Ernie's is one of the top diner-type breakfast joints in town. This is a pretty crowded group with other good options in town (i.e. LaRue's, Colonial Kitchen, Nina's, etc.), but what sets Uncle Ernie's apart is the pancakes. Love 'em. Can't get enough of 'em. I'm one of those guys that usually gets an omelet/hashbrowns/bacon/etc. when I go out to breakfast, but here, the pancakes are king.

The food is superb!. The best breakfast in West Michigan, bar none! The food is superb, in large (too large?) portions, and gets to your table quickly. Waitstaff is friendly, well-trained, and they help each other out when necessary...a nice thing to see nowadays.

On weekends, expect a wait, but the kitchen is so efficient the tables turn quickly.

Just a quibble for the Urbanspoon editor...why is the "Uncle" capitalized on this site?
KzooFoodie
Great breakfast!. Food is excellent, but be prepared to wait if you're going on a weekend (especially if it's right after church). Service is average at best, the atmosphere is very casual and diner-esque.

Try the Dutch Hash or the Biscuits & Gravy. Possibly the best breakfast in Kalamazoo.

We were all in agreement when we got back in the car. Uncle Ernie’s does it right. It’s a great breakfast in a comforting, familiar atmosphere.
