Review Yamaguchi Restaurant - Port Washington

The food here is always delicious! The sushi and sashimi combo is worth the price and super fresh. The tonkatsu is always a good choice and cooked crispy. They give big portions for the soba noodles and the dipping sauce is seasoned perfectly. Service may be a bit slow, but everyone is kind and the food is worth the wait!

Food: Great quality of sushi. Hot foods are ok. Service: They take reservations but tables are not ready by the reserved time for the most of the times.

We had been there for birthday dinner couple years. The service and food is amazing. The waiter is very nice.

By far the best traditional Japanese spot in the area. Excellent service, tasty food. We usually get sushi but today ordered fried oysters and fried tempera to start with. Highly recommended.

Best sashimi I’ve ever had. Wonderful, friendly service. This is worth the trip to Port Washington area if you’re staying in the NYC area. It’s right off the LIRR so it’s walkable from the train station.

It is one of the few authentic Japanese restaurants in Long Island. Some of the reviewers here have not been to Japan I have. As well as most of the top Japanese restaurants in NYC and the country. some of the reviewers are used to cheap sushi from other ethnicities pretending to be Japanese. The only reason for 4 stars is they don't have uni. They only have standard fish. But it is very fresh and I have been going for years and BTW I live in the city as Long islanders like to call it. But I have dealings in LI.

Yamaguchi does a great job of handling massive take out orders and servicing dining customers. Though sushi service can be slow at times but the service itself is amazing. The fish is top-notch and their rice is very well seasoned and moist. The place serves chef's special and that's the best to get in my opinion. Cooked food is pretty good as well especially their egg (tamago), which might be the best one around. Recommend calling ahead for weekend reservations.

2022.03 nice place to dine. A classic Japanese restaurant environment. Omakase must try. Reasonable price with uni, amiebi, lobster, scallop, and lot of toro. The appetizer is really good, we have the eggplant, soft and tender with believe grounded fish stuffing With light sauce. Not noisy at all. Service is excellent and prompt.

Simple yet so good. I can definitely taste the difference in their fish here vs other Japanese sushi places. The ambience is not fancy, it’s casual and relaxing and the food was so good. I had their sashimi and sushi combo platter plus the steamed egg. Everything was perfection. Will def come back again

I ordered and shared the sushi sashimi omakase with my brother so the portions were just right. Some of the sashimi such as the sweet shrimp, uni, toro, and yellowtail were really good but others like salmon and trout were mid.

My husband and I absolutely adore this place. We are huge sushi lovers who enjoy an exquisite omakase here and there, but Restaurant Yamaguchi offers amazing sushi and Japanese comfort food in a local mom and pop shop setting. For the price, the portion size and quality of food just can't be beat. We usually get the sushi entree but I also really enjoy their soba noodle dishes which aren't easily found in Japanese restaurants these days. On the weekends, the parking lot right behind the restaurant is free!

THE BEST sushi place in all of Long Island. Authentic, Japanese owned. I’m an avid sushi eater (need it every week) and once my husband and I started eating at Yamaguchi, I can’t eat sushi anywhere else anymore..they don’t compare. Please don’t ever leave Port Washington.

One of the few sushi places in LI that is actually run by Japanese people, we really love it here, they have great quality of fish (by far the most important factor), good construction of sushi rolls, friendly and genuine people working here.

It's a great place the omaskase is great if you can afford it, haha. It's pricey but it's good traditional Japanese food. They have Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese(the owners and some employees) speakers here as well. Usually full after 6 pm, so make sure you come earlier or ask for reservations. I've been coming here since 2018. They used to give free fruit in the end, but they charge for it now. Inflation issues. They have always treated the kids to free chocolate pocky at the end of the meal.

Authentic and delicious Japanese food and sushi owned and operated by a lovely Japanese family who also reside in town. They stayed afloat by offering take out only during the pandemic with a limited menu but finally came back into the full swing of their menu when they started opening again for dine in. I love that you can get your usual fare of sushi bar nigiri and sashimis and fan favorites like udon, tempura and katsu but they also have really traditional heart warming dishes like sukiyaki, zosui, zaru soba, chawanmushi, fried squid tentacle salad and such too! There literally is something for everyone here. Owner's and their staff are super nice and really take care of first timers as well as their regulars like me. Definitely call ahead and make a reservation though. Plenty of parking on the street as well as a lot behind the restaurant too.

It has to be the best authentic Japanese owned and operated restaurant in Long Island.
Many sushi restaurants on Long island are owned by Japanese but have Chinese chefs. That means its not a life style for them its just a job. At Yamauguchi its their life!
We have been many times and we just realized we have not taken many pictures and we take pictures everywhere we eat! Maybe we are so hungry we just eat!
We have had sushi all over the country and many of the country's top restaurants including Maui and Honolulu Hawaii.
On the east coast I have been to all of the highly rated sushi restaurants in NYC a few in DC , Jersey , CT and upstate NY. We have also been to Sushi Ota in San Diego, Makato in DC, Morimoto in Philly, Nobu in Manhattan, Ushiwakamaru, Sushi Sieki in Manhattan, Hatsuhana in Manhattan, Sushiden, Sushi Say and many others.
One Major minus is that is is freezing in there. I wish they would keep it warmer for the customers.
The food is very good and they are a very friendly staff.
I order take out usually and I will keep doing so.
I like that Mrs Yamaguchi is always there and that her husband is the head sushi chef.
It takes years of training to be a good sushi chef which is why authentic Japanese sushi is hard to come by especially on Long Island. (I am part Japanese)
If you are looking for authentic fresh sushi on Long Island go to Yamaguchi's just bring a jacket!

By far my favorite Japanese restaurant. Their menu is simple and authentic. If you want fresh sushi- go here!

It’s not Manhattan top tier quality, but it’s above what you’d find at most Japanese restaurants.

Yamaguchi might be one of the better Japanese restaurants in the Queens/ Long Island area. Conveniently housed in its Port Washington location, right across from the LIRR station, this small Japanese eatery is constantly buzzing.
