POPE is the ultimate hipster spot. Excellent beer choices, good late night eats, and a fun crowd. It gets pretty packed...pretty much all the time. But it's a fun spot for a night out. Good brunch too!
Like your favorite t-shirt. The Pub on Passyunk East, P.O.P.E. to the locals and partons, is like my favorite old cozy t-shirt. It's dark and dingy interior looks the same at noon as it does at midnight. The beer menu is immense, and the prices are reasonable. I usually go for a $2.50 Miller Lite, but more discriminating pallets can go for any of the 14 beers they have on tap or many more bottled selections.
The food menu is surprisingly good for a dive bar. They have a seitan shepard's pie and seitan cheesesteak, and usually have some sort of vegan daily special like seitan tacos or BBQ tofu. They also have a portobella mushroom sandwich that's about par for what you'd expect in a brew pub.
Faithful readers of The Feisty Foodie may recall last year's Cheesesteak Chowdown , where I earned my stripes as both a cheesesteak expert and a total glutton - within a 6 hour period, I consumed 6 half-cheesesteaks (which comes to about 3 cheesesteaks, but given my size, it's quite a feat; also, I like to differentiate that I didn't eat 3 cheesesteaks, I ate 6 halves from 6 different places). Of course, while Beer Boor and I undertook that task, on our return to NYC, we noted that there were places we wished we'd gone and other sandwiches we wished we'd eaten. We talked occasionally about revisiting Philly to remedy that, but never set into motion a specific plan until late September, when Beer Boor took a Monday off and I "played hooky" from my own job. That day's focus: eat roast pork sandwiches , Philly's other sandwich - those in the know will mention them, but they're definitely not yet as famous as cheesesteaks - though they're not exactly difficult to come by in this city eithe
I come here quite often and have never had a bad experience. The food is outstanding. They always have a solid draft list and plenty of cans and bottles. The staff is top notch. Definitely can't go wrong at the Pope!
8/24/23…What do you do when your refrigerator breaks? You head over to the Pub on East Passyunk and have a great dinner starting with Candace, our server, who is so very nice and you add in the most delicious nachos, chicken sandwiches, Pope burger and fries and chicken fingers and Pete’s awesome chicken wings and always a “hello” from Pete and everything is so much better. Thanks Pete and staff. Your food and friendliness is awesome!
1/13/23…Still love their nachos, chicken
sandwich, pope burger and now I can add their chicken wings to one of my favorite foods! It was my son’s birthday and Pete was awesome enuf to send out a candle on his sandwich. Thanks Pete, it will always be the small gestures in life that make you remember a place! You put a smile on my son’s face and that is awesome! Great margarita also😊!
1/13/22 Just had a couple of cocktails and a
nacho, a chicken sandwich and a Pope Burger for my son's birthday. This is still one of our favorite places to get a really good cocktail and an awesome meal. Thank you, Pete and staff!
Updated review 5/12...Just ordered take out and the food is still delicious as usual. We had nachos with chicken, the Pope Burger and the chicken sandwich. Love that they use eco-friendly containers.
A really nice pub/restaurant with a friendly staff and good food. Our personal favorites, the nachos, the chicken sandwich, the burger and the fries with crabmeat and cheese. I recently went for their weekend brunch and wow that menu is great also. The chicken fried chicken, the breakfast burger...delicious. One of my favorite places to get food.
The Buffalo wings I ordered were excellent, the beer was great and cold. The service was great our waiter kept checking in making sure we were good. It's very dark in there with little lighting at night and loud with music but other than that I would go back.
One of my all time favorite bars. Great beer, great food, cool people, there’s a reason all of my friends meet up there regularly
I sooooooo much like this place! My favorite "dive" bar. Feels like a step in the past. The atmosphere is awesome. I brought my out of town friends here for the awesome food, beer, and atmosphere. They both agreed that they loved it there. Get the Philly box!!! Soooooo good!
The chicken wings and crab fries were amazing here and the drinks were great. The staff was extremely nice, and the atmosphere was also really good (they were playing a studio ghibli movie on the TV, which is a major plus in my book)
I've been visiting this restaurant for years, and every time I go, I always have their wings and Chesapeake Crab Fries.
A good variety of liquors and beers.
Always wonderful staff, delicious food and drinks. If you don't drink even the NA beer is great
Great service. Even better people. We are out of towners. And couldn’t check into our air bnb till 3pm and got in town around 10 am. They told us they would hold our luggage until we could check in. And there burger was the best burger I’ve ever had. 10X stars
Really great service with friendly staff. Had a nice bite to eat outside, seated on one of the sidewalk tables. Was a nice visit for an easy dinner and a good selection of local brews.
