Review Sakura Bana - Omaha

Erick Castro
Stopped in for lunch with a co-worker to check it out as neither of us had been here. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Clean looking restaurant. Ordered one of the bento style lunches. Food was good and arrived quickly. Definitely recommend stopping in if you have a chance.

We really enjoyed everything about this place. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was fresh and good quality. Atmosphere was great. I highly recommend this place and we'll definitely be back as often as we can. So far the best sushi we've had in Omaha. We ordered a sushi combo off the main menu and the sushi menu and loved everything. The presentation was beautiful. We got salads and couldn't decide on the dressing so our server brought us small dishes with each kind and both were delicious. Even the bathroom was clean and smelled nice.

The food is amazing here! I highly recommend the sukiyaki with udon noodles. The sushi is top quality and really delicious. Much better than other restaurants downtown.

Came into Sakura Bana for lunch — we were served quickly and the food was good. I used to live in Japan and this feels like a little taste of Japan.

Omaha, NE. I’m Japanese and my husband and baby daughter learned to love Japanese food at Sushi Ichiban (the predecessor to Sakura Bana) 30 years ago. My daughter instantly loved their miso soup and chicken teriyaki. We moved away in 1994 but imagine our joy at finding this restaurant here 30 years later. We had the Nabeyaki udon and my husband had the same bento he always had: chicken teriyaki with tempura shrimp and California roll. What a treat.

Following my friend's recommendation, my family and I went to visit Sakura Bana for the first time. Absolutely glad that we went. Everything from atmosphere, service, food quality to prices, we were impressed. We will definitely return as regulars. Also, the restaurant really has the Japan feel :)

We visited Sakura Bana for the first time and learnt they were the first sushi bar in Omaha, although their name was different back when they opened. Their sushi tasted absolutely delicious and the ambience was nice as well. The restaurant is a little expensive than most other sushi places in Omaha, but it does not disappoint.

Great sushi for that price. Very consistent.

The food is very good there. It's well above our expectations. The sashimi of the nigiri is fresh and the price is reasonable. I had the beef sukiyaki which is delicious as well. Although it is one person portion, I need help to finish the whole dish. My friend ordered the unagi don which she said it was good. I would recommend this place.

Myself and my family have been going to Sakura Bana for years. Chef Tony is a very well respected man, and his sushi is delicious. I know Sakura Bana is known for sushi, but don't sleep in their Bento Box either!!! It is filling and delicious. This is combination D with chicken teriyaki. Will continue to keep coming back

Attention to detail in every dish we've ordered. Food is delicious and consistent in quality. Server's are very attractive and kind.

My family has been going here for years. The chef special roll is my jam. Love everything about this place

Good reviews are well deserved. Arrived hungry on a Friday night; seated and served lightning fast. Staff was friendly and polite. Food was well priced for the portions and quoting my daughter...Yummy! And Lynsey is Awesome!

Loved this restraunt! The food was great! The sushi was great! The beer was great! It was a great atmosphere and a nice place to relax for an authentic meal. I highly reccomend this place, they have a lot of different food and sushi options and some fancy ways of displaying the dishes!

Very fast and attentive service despite being very busy at dinner time. Ichiban sushi set and seafood yakisoba were delicious 😋

Great service, delicious sushi and sashimi.

Elly is really sweet and fun lady. All the staff are very welcoming and their lunch bento box is very affordable and good combination of fruit, grain, meat, soup and veggies. Their food are very fresh and tasty which makes me return their restaurant very often.

Fantastic experience! The food was incredible -- everything from the ginger dressing on my salad to the sushi I had as an appetizer to the udon I had for dinner, just wow. I also had a delightful conversation with the chef behind the bar during my meal. Loved the whole experience so much and would 100% recommend!

I’ve been to this place many, many times all the way back to when it was the Sushi Ichiban further up on Dodge street. I always enjoy a bento box and may get some other sushi or sashimi to go along with it. Can be a real bargain, for sushi, if you go for lunch and stick with a bento box. I really like their carrot dressing and their miso soup. And if you can find room the tempura fried ice cream is great. Now I’m hungry.🤤

So, the reason for the rating is because my wife and I were here a little over an hour before they closed and they started cleaning about 15 minutes after we were there including vacuuming. We couldn't even have a conversation because of the noise of the vacuum. The sushi was some of the best I've had in Omaha. Prices are good. Great godzilla roll. Pacific roll and fantasy roll good too.

Not a dirty restaurant. What's with Diner From Twin Cities and these other people??? I've been eating there regularly for over eleven years... including when it was in the old IHOP building at 84th. Its been nothing but spotless every time I've eaten there. And the food hasn't changed in all that time... actually its gotten better with the addition of the sushi dream menu. Other than Hiro's, this is my favorite Japanese restaurant in town.

We had sushi rolls and they were soooo large. It was difficult to eat them without gagging for me. Everything was tasty otherwise.

What happened?? This used to be a great place for a sushi lunch but was disappointed at my last visit (7/25/14). The walls were filthy and in need of a good wash down. The backs of the booths were just as dirty and I warned my fiancé to not lean back as there were random patches of brown sludge on the back of his booth. Food was not what I had remembered either. We asked for carrot ginger dressing and got sesame, which tasted powdery and gross. The beef yakisoba was mediocre, at best, and tasted like something I may have whipped up in college with leftovers. It looked like it was just thrown on the plate as well. The lunch combo with a California roll and tempura was OK but nothing to write home about. I don't know if there is new ownership or what but come on - clean up a little bit! There's nothing less appetizing than a filthy restaurant.

Absolutely the best sushi and Japanese. We have been enjoying Sakaura Bana for decades, long before the explosion of sushi restaurants. A visit to Sakura Bana is always my daughter's first choice when she comes home from NYC. She eats a lot of sushi in NYC and her travels. In her opinion, not many compare favorably to Sakura Bana, Everything on the menu is extraordinary: sushi, rice bowls, soup dishes, dinner boxes, teriyaki and spider rolls. We are fortunate to have such an amazing Japanese restaurant in Omaha. The service is outstanding. We have tried other sushi restaurants in Omaha with disappointing experiences and always return to Sakura Bana.

I can say I have never had sushi with mango in it and a pineapple sauce on top. I thought it would be too sweet but it was the best sushi we ordered last night. The sushi was good, the cleanliness on the other hand was not. My complaint is about the state of the restaurant and how long it took to receive our meal. We sat in a booth and the wall had splatters of food and drink on it, and the corner of the seat and wall had cob webs and food. This place could have been a lot better of an experience if we had been eating in a cleaner environment. There were 4 of us in my party and ordered 6 different rolls. It took at least 30 minutes to receive our roll and they weren't that busy when we arrived around 6pm.

Rarely misses. My wife and I had both had experience with Sushi Ichiban (original name) and we had our first date there! We have been loyal patrons ever since... Like any business and restaurant, there have been a few bobbles, but they have been minor and short lived. Always come back to excellent food at prices that are not cheap, but worth the quality.

Always something for people I bring regardless of if they are sushi fans or land fare eaters. I even got my 90+ year old father in there for my birthday this year and he loved the red bean ice cream!

Best miso in town. Period. Best carrot dressing in town. Period. Negimayaki rocks for beef lovers! Tempura is a hit with the kids!

Old Favorite. This used to be Sushi Ichiban, which was the only good sushi place in town for years. Now there are many mediocre sushi places. Sakura Bana is still better than most with a good Bento box, sushi, and interior. Prices are relatively moderate.

This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant in the area. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for traditional sushi and sashimi.

The first time I ever had sushi was at Sakura Bana. i have been there about 8 or 9 times there is no doubt they have great food... My only issue with this place is I ? How professional the staff are including owner tonight I went to get sushi owner comes up to me and ask me me nice is there something wrong with are food I said no, why do you ask? He says waitress says you don't always tip after meal. I could not beleave what my ears just heard I felt so disrespected. I understand when you go out to eat you should tip and most of the time I leave tips . After I are I paid my bill it was 12.88 I gave them a 5 dollar tip. Its just sad in my eyes

Yum. =). This place was delicious! Their Miso soup is probably my husband's favorite. I personally prefer other sushi restaurants because they have more of a variety. It seemed like everything here had eel sauce on it or a different fish and nothing really -different- about it. But what they do have is good. I would go back if we happened to be in the neighborhood!

The best sushi restaurant in Omaha for true sushi, not that fancy roll-only stuff they serve everywhere else. I have dined here for over 20 yrs (back to when it was called sushi ichiban) and I've never had a bad or smelly piece of sushi.

My favorite for sushi. Now, we are in Omaha, true, but when it comes to sushi this is my favorite place to go. I'm not the most adventurous, but what I've had here is delicious. The wait staff is always nice and I really enjoy sitting at the sushi bar when I get a chance. I prefer the sesame over the ginger dressing, enjoy their sushi itself (the individual pieces of fish) and love the maki I've tried (the rolls). My favorites are the crunchy california, the spider roll and the dragon roll.

One of the Best Sushi experiences. Ive had lots of sushi, but hadn't for awhile until tonight. I was craving some and randomly picked this place especially since it is closest to where I live.

It was packed on a wednesday night.

I ordered edamame and mini octopus as appetizers. Edamame was great of course as most sushi restaurants' edamame are. The mini octopus was really good if you like octopus. I ordered a large hot sake. The sake was smooth and nice but Im not sure what kind it is as its the featured one and they have other specific kinds as cold sake.

I ordered Sashimi deluxe. It had salmon, tuna, octopus, whitefish, saba, masago, hamachi. They give you a good amount of rice with the sashimi and good amount of wasabi.

I really enjoyed this meal. I love sushi. The waiter was very nice and kept coming back and making sure everything was all good.

I need to go to Ichiban, Okinawa and other sushi restaurants to compare to this one.

Overall, an awesome experience with delicious sushi of course.

Good. I have had some nicely rolled, fat sushi rolls here, I plan on being a regular here.

Fresh sushi. We like the atmosphere, servers and the quality of sushi you find at Sakura Bana. Some rolls are a bit pricey, but so worth it because they melt in your mouth.

GREAT SUSHI. I've never had a bad meal here and the service has always been great. We always seem to get the same waitress and she is so great and very attentive without being annoying. The interior is really cool and authentic looking and the restaurant is very clean. Everything from their miso to their side salad (with awesome best sesame and carrot dressing) to the sushi is spot on. They have great happy hour deals too. They really care about good preparation and authentic sushi, and it shows in the taste and presentation. I just wish it was open on Sundays :(

Good food but a long wait. Pretty good food but a long wait. The waitress failed to tell me that there was fish juice in my soup and it is a little pricey. Will try this place again.

Love the Sushi Hate the TVs. My son and I have been regulars here since it was Sushi Ichiban and in the old IHOP. (I was a regular at the IHOP too after Friday nights at the Joker in Council Bluffs. But that's another story.) The food and the service is always great. It's great food for a great price - much more reasonable than some other, also delicious, Japenese restaurants in Omaha.

If they lost those obnoxious TVs I'd be in sushi heaven. Really - take them down. Please.

My go to sushi place in the ha. My go to place for sushi. not maybe the best you'll ever have in your lifetime- if you live in places like cali or nyc, but for omaha it's where i come to again and again. i still miss the former location in and old wafflehouse, and the current location doesn't quite pack on the charm.... but get the spider roll- it's my fav.

Poor Quality Poor Service. I recently was in the Omaha area for work and against my better judgement ate sushi in Omaha. I mean Omaha is known for their steaks. We had mediocre service and lousy food. The bill ended up being 65 dollars and was not worth it. I will never return to that sushi place.

Good Food. Sakura Bana was a good Japanese Restaurant. I have eaten there 2 or 3 times so far. Before they moved to here they are now and went by Sushi Ichiban, I had eaten at Sushi Ichiban a couple times too. In fact Sushi Ichiban was my first Japanese restaurant in the Omaha area. A Friend of mine from the Navy is married to a girl who is half Japanese, and her mom owned a Sushi Bar in Alameda, California, they introduced me to Japanese food in 1993, while I was in the navy. When I came home on leave, I took my parents to Sushi Ichiban. And then I took a menu back with me to show to my friend & his wife. She wanted me to show the menu to her mom. And after she read the menu, I felt like she was yelling at me. But my friends wife told me not to worry, she wasn't yelling at me, her mom was just made about how the order of sushi was, ONE PIECE per order. My friend wife told me that traditional Japanese sushi is supposed to be 2 pieces per order. Anyway, the reason I meantion this is because Sakura Bana, last time I went there still did the same thing they did when there were Sushi Ichiban. Even so, their food is still pretty good.

I have been eating here for 20 yeats, since it was Sushi Ichiban. The food is great and so is the staff. Best sushi lunch in town.

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Omaha by far. The food is always good, service is friendly and fast, and they have a very wide array of menu options. They have a lot of authentic Japanese dishes that you won't find at a more Americanized sushi place. I love it!
The Diner
Quality issues. I used to enjoy eating here when it was sushi ichiban but i had a hard time deciding whether or not to give sakura bana a like.

used to be really good. good price, good food!
somethings changed....
portion size went down, food quality went way down.
price went up.

i wont be coming back for awhile. spent $50 on a meal for two got a tiny sukiyaki with very cheap chewy beef.

beef quality on the negimayaki was poor as well.

you got a thumbs up but its only because i have so many fond memories of sushi ichiban!
Rachel
Very good sushi. I was skeptical to try sushi this far from an ocean, but am glad I did! They have a good variety of rolls here and the sushi was very good quality.

The best sushi in Omaha. Fast friendly dependable service with a range of Japanese Cuisine for all lovers of delicious food

I'm a regular - and it's GREAT!. Look, this is Omaha. The sushi you get in Omaha isn't going to be what you get in LA or SFO where there is a large Japanese American crowd to eat the things that are outside the average American's pallet range. "Tony" does a great job. His sushi chefs prepare the best "real" sushi in town - and for that matter in the midwest. (Look: Funny Rolls at the trendy place with the cute waitresses are not real sushi) If you like sushi, you'll like this place. if you are entertaining and your guests like sushi but you don't, there are other things on the menu you can order and your guests will be impressed with your choice.
Nicole
Poor service and boring sushi.

Eat your Sushi in front of the TV. I have been eating at Sukura Bana since long before they moved to their present location and changed their name from Sushi Ichiban. I really miss the old place. I think the food was better, and the atmosphere more conducive to eating. Yes, the new place is more modern. Too modern. I mean, must we have 7 or 8 or is it 9 big screen TVs glaring down on such a small seating area? Why? Does someone own stock in LG? This is a major distraction.
All of that said, the sushi and Japanese box dinners still are more hit than miss. Service, though often harried, is pleasant enough.
If you have never been here, it is difficult to find. Look for Pier 1. Sakura Bana is tucked into the small strip center to the west.

Best Sushi in Town. Let me start off by saying before I moved here to Omaha I was VERY skeptical about eating sushi in the middle of the country. I have lived (and dined of course) up and down the East coast before moving here. So when some friends suggested we go out for sushi I was hesitant. Sushi is one of m favorite foods when done well, and I HATE it when places who are supposedly good get it wrong (Blue).

I was very pleasantly surprised on my first visit, and I have continued to enjoy Sakura Bana on many, many visits since.

The quality of their fish is very high (for being in the middle of the country), the sushi chefs are talented, and their rolls and cones are fairly inventive. I have never had a bad piece of sushi and Sakura Bana and I cannot say that about any other sushi place in Omaha.

Sakura Bana's other offerings are very good as well. All of their noodle dishes are good. Nabeyaki Udon and Sansai Soba are two of my favorites. If you are feeling a little less adventurous or have guest who are not familiar with Japanese food the Special Boxes are a good place to start.

That being said, I do have a few minor gripes. First, it can get pricey if you are not careful. The wait staff is very attentive, but not especially knowledgeable. And they like to fill tables before booths. All of these gripes are small though and easily fixable by watching what you order, sitting at the sushi bar and asking for the seat you want.

I would definitely recommend that if you are going to go out for sushi in Omaha you go to Sakura Bana. There are other sushi places with more atmosphere, flare, and gimmicks, but if you are looking for the best sushi Sakura Bana is the place.

Favorite sushi in Omaha. Been going to Sakura Bana for years. Back when it was still called Sushi Ichiban and located on 84th and Dodge. I have never had bad sushi there. Always quality fish. The mackerel has always been outstanding. Consistent fish quality for years.. All of the sushi chefs know what they're doing. Quality abounds in all regards.

Regular menu stand-outs include the negimayaki and nabeyaki udon. Teriyaki and ginger dishes are also very good. Champon is great if you like seafood soups. You can even get a good steak there. Love this place.

If you like lobster and sushi, then Sakura Bana is the place to be. In celebration of their 25th anniversary, Sakura Bana has awesome lobster and sushi specials at great prices...

I had been told by a few people that their favorite sushi in Omaha is Sakura Bana. I had been to Sushi Ichiban back when it was in the old IHOP, but hadn't been to Sakura Bana yet, so I had to try it with Swoof last week. It does seem odd to eat sushi in
