Review Ma Me House - Oakland

Jazz Baruela
Uptown Oakland there is limited lunch options open when it comes to late lunch, anything after 3pm. Then I remembered there are some few places that are open long after lunch rushes, like Ma Me House. The places was empty and some of the employees were having their break. They were really patient when I asked them questions about certain plates and soon I ordered a Red Rice Combo with garlic noodles and an apricot jam soda with fresh mango. The food came out less than 5 minutes after which was great because I was in a time crunch. Then again food coming out immediately should be a red flag. The garlic noodles, which was smothered with cheese, tasted completely off and the noodles were mushy. Everything on the plate came warm to nearly cold. . . they didn't even bother to heat it?!? Really?!? >___< The apricot jam soda was BOMB!!! I would have to say this saved the whole meal. For $21 (the combo + noodles + soda) I thought it was overpriced for an okay meal. Service was on point, they were attentive they put away my meal in a doggie bag, and they were knowledgeable about their food. Fast forward a few hours later to have my leftovers for dinner. I noticed something moving about since the lid to the container is clear and I thought I was seeing things. When I opened the to-go container there were fruit flies!!! Not one, not two, there were 4. . . as I threw out the other half of my plate my appetite went along with it. This meal went from 'Okay' to NEVER AGAIN!! So word of advice for future Ma Me House customers if you're going to get the rest of your meal to-go make sure they pack it right in front of you or bring you the container so you can pack it yourself. For me they took my plate back to the kitchen to pack. As for the one star I would have to say it all goes to the apricot jam soda, if it wasn't for that I would give it zero.

I came in around 2pm on a weekday for lunch and the restaurant was empty, but I chose to just dine in vs take out. I ordered the shrimp clay pot. It didn't take too long to come out. There were 5 pieces of shrimp, about 4 pieces of tofu, and bits of mushroom. The sauce was too oily, with the grease separated from the sauce. One thing that I was surprised at was that the rice came separately. In my head (and at most vietnamese restaurants), this dish incorporates the rice in the clay pot. But no fault here, this is just their interpretation. I also found it a bit odd that it came with kimchi, which I have no gripes about considering I love Korean food! Kimchi was ok, not great and not horrible. Overall dish was disappointing though. Service was friendly. I was the only one inside so it wasn't hard to get anyone's attention. I thought that for $15 total, the meal was pricey for what you get. There's other vietnamese restaurants in the area where I feel like you get more bang for your buck, in both portions and quality wise.

The Good: + cozy, wholesome, low key, hidden gem located in Mission + unpretentious service and atmosphere, not stuffy at all + excellent execution on many of the dishes, and a rotating specials menu based on seasonal ingredients + the dishes are simple and comforting, and executed well + excellent value considering the attention to detail and the portion size

Good food. Made to order. If you ask for spicy you actually get spicy.
