Review Hobby's Delicatessen & Restaurant - Newark

Full disclosure: we did not eat here. However, our family was trying to find a place to eat at 9am and must have looked like the lost tourists (stranded by a missed airplane connection). One of the gentlemen who has worked there for 30 years walked across the street to us and offered to help. He walked us down the street to one place which was closed, then suggested two more places for us. We ended up at Central Restaurant, a diner that has been around for 100 years and we really enjoyed. But just the man going out of his way to help us was so nice. If we ever get stranded here again I'll make sure to go by when it's open!

They make the best Pastrami Sandwiches!!!! From time to time even though they are currently closed I pass by there and hope and pray that they are open. Recently I saw a gentleman doing some work outside the building I actually backed up to asked if they were coming back and I was so excited to find out they will be shortly!! Hooray Hobby’s

Holy cow! What an awesome experience. We had friendly service, great food, and the Devils atmosphere is great! Lots of lovely little holes everywhere if you're paying attention. I highly recommend the Reuben "sliders," though each one is really the size of a whole sandwich. It lets you taste the traditional, Chico, and brisket Reubens, with is good because I still can't choose. We'll definitely be back.

The food was so delicious! We had read about this place and it was rated #1, but you know you can't always believe what you read. I would definitely have to agree with that statement. When we arrived we were greeted right away by who appeared to be the owner and he also made sure we were doing ok once we got our food. Now that's what I call great service! The price was fair for the amount of food you get. We for there at around 11:30am for lunch and wow, it was so filling and much more. I ordered the corned beef and pastrami sandwich, which they are known for. There was so much meat in that sandwich, I did not know what to do with myself. Each bite was as good as the last one. The meat was super fresh and juicy. Not a single dry bite. The Russian dressing that is placed on the inside of the bread made it so much better. There was just a light coating of it and a light layer of coleslaw as well. It was just enough to get an extra crunch to every bite. I loved that it was not over powering and made the sandwich how it should be. I also ordered a side of the pasta salad. Such a perfect size for such an enormous sandwich size. It was not bland and was not over bearing with flavors. It was just perfect and I loved the fresh vegetables that were diced up so you can get a little bite with the pasta. I was too full, but I had to order a hamentashen to go. I ordered the apricot flavor and it is the size of my hand. I cannot wait to devour this later. I am sure it is as great as the food they serve! Highly recommend coming here to eat!!! Oh and I cannot forget the friendly service we had! Everyone was so happy and they greeted us with a smile. The lady at the check out counter was just as pleasant as everyone else there. Great work guys!

Incredible food and huge portions at Hobby’s. This old-school family deli has an enormous menu, which left us planning our next trip back. One of the owners, Michael, chatted with us for a while during our meal, which added even more to the comfortable, welcoming, family vibe. The potato pancakes were better than any I’d had before, and the matzah ball soup was picture-worthy. There were several vegetarian and vegan options too, including a Mediterranean grilled vegetable platter with divine homemade hummus. Must try!

Great owners and friendly staff. Some of the best deli I've had. Huge portions. Been coming here before Devils games for a number of years now, it is great on gameday seeing all the fans in there.

My husband and I grew up in Newark NJ and regularly ate at Hobby's. Sandwiches, especially Pastrami are DELICIOUS. We moved to Virginia about thirty years ago. Whenever we came to Newark, stopping by Hobby's for two Pastrami sandwiches was a MUST do. On Saturday October 23, 2021 coming from New Haven CT, we made it our business to go to by Hobby's to get our sandwiches. Hobby's was closed👁️👁️😯😢. Standing outside, Hobby's looked as if it was closed down. A gentleman passing by said, "Hobby's isn't open anymore",😱. Is that the truth???? IS THAT TRUE.... TODAY IS TUESDAY MARCH 8, 2022. HAS HOBBY's DELICATESSEN & RESTAURANT FINISHED RENOVATION AND REOPENED?? I promised on our next trip to Newark NJ, my husband and I will DEFINATELY stop by HOBBY's and get our favorite sandwiches. ♥️2 PASTRAMI SANDWICHES ON RYE BREAD W/O THE SEEDS❤️ PICKLES AND SOMETHING SWEET😊. WE DON'T HAVE THE EXACT DATE, HOWEVER, IT WILL BE A MATTER OF DAYS. YOU WILL KNOW WHEN VIRGINIA IS THERE😂 It has been a VERY long time since we've had a Pastrami Sandwich. Best deli in New Jersey. You can not find a better sandwich anywhere. Try their fresh all-dark-meat turkey sandwich on rye with cole slaw. You always get a Kosher pickle too.

Fantastic lunch. Everything as expected from a NJ/NYC deli. Had the corned beef/pastrami on rye. The coleslaw was a great addition. However the Matzo Ball soup was best I've ever had AMAZING. The stuffed cupcakes just rounded the meal out. Thanks and we will for sure visit and recommend to all our friends to visit.

This is one of those delis that thinks a big sandwich = a great sandwich. Not true, their house specialty sandwich of pastrami and corned beef had a lot of meat on it but it was very fatty and grizzly and not really appetizing. The menu says that this is the sandwich that made them famous if that's the case that's pretty unfortunate

I had THE best lunch I’ve EVER had today at Hobby’s! The homemade soups are excellent, and the brisket melts in your mouth. The staff is friendly and attentive...and Mark couldn’t have been nicer to my daughter and me. This is a Great stop for lunch!!

Best corned beef and pastrami in North Jersey. Fab onion rings and knishes and occasionally the best shtrudel in town. Been goin for years.

Hands down, the best deli in northern New Jersey. My favorite sandwich is the Hat Trick with corned beef, Pastrami and beef brisket on triple decker rye with coleslaw and Russian dressing... absolutely to die for!

Best deli around. Corned beef, knishes, pickels, Cole slaw, and blintzes... What more could you want? Plus the servers and staff are fantastic. It's a neighborhood staple. You have to go!

A fabulous experience in every way! The pastrami is the best anywhere, the owners are so nice, and the wait staff is fun. We love going there!

After 17 years I finally had an excellent combination of corned beef and pastrami definitely there's no place like New York or New Jersey for a great sandwiches. Hobby's is a great place for a real food.

The food was absolutely amazing my wife had the pastrami and corned beef combo and I had the world's most delicious Kansas city burger we will be returning more often and the cupcakes also were fabulous 5 stars

If your in Newark and have a little time...I'd been wondering if East Coast Pastrami was all that? It is, and the nicest folks work there. A group of Army officers came in and one had to have a gluten-free meal. The owner personally went and checked to be certain that none of the ingredients would contain gluten then made the meal and delivered it. It was a great show of care and respect. I'll be back for sure.

Omg, I never had matzo ball soup before but it was Awesome!! And I can't leave out of jersey and not have my pastrami sandwich!! Thank you so much Hobbys, I will definitely be back!!

Best deli corned beef sandwich I've ever had! So glad that another Devils fan recommended this place to me. Everyone is so welcoming and accommodating there! I will be back for another pre-game meal �

I love this place. Everything is geschmacht (delicious). My favorites are the pastrami and the soups (especially matzo ball, mushroom barley and pea). The owners and wait staff are so friendly. And don't forget the pickles! Love it.

Awesome as usual! We always enjoy seeing our friends, Michael and Mark, and the staff at Hobby's for a great meal and catching up.
