Small art museum with a good amount of art to see. I wish it was a little bigger, but the quality of art was very good. It has a little bit of everything around every corner. Lots of what they have is from local artists around CT, new and old. Watch out for the security guard when you get there. He'll look at you suspicious, untill you go in lol. If you get here before 12pm on a Saturday, you can go for free and it wasn't too busy either.

I liked the paintings. My favorite was the Feast of the Redeemer. The benches were cool, each one having a unique design to match the theme of the room it is in. The gift shop had some cool gifts. Although, if you are buying something wooden, check for dents; the cat puzzle I bought was the only perfect one in the store.

The New Britain Museum of American Art is a nice little gem right outside of Hartford. The museum does not have a huge collection, but it is a very good collection and they strive to make your viewing very comfortable. Almost every gallery room featured a unique bench for sitting and viewing the art, and each of those benches were works of art themselves. The staff are very pleasant and helpful and made us feel very welcome. In the museum you will find art from the Hudson River School and Expressionism to modern, surrealism and contemporary. We were pleased to encounter a Chihuly hanging in a stairwell between floors. There were plenty of other surprises as well and I hope you will discover them too by visiting the museum. It is well worth it.

Wonderful local art museum. I visited for the first time in March 2021. Timed tickets due to COVID, but there was hardly anyone in the galleries on a weekday. I was impressed with the permanent collection. I also was pleasantly surprised with the special exhibit on Helen Frankenthaler. I was not aware of her work before viewing the special exhibit on-site.
