Cuban sandwich - good pork and very tasty
Swanson's stout - a bit bitter and fizzy.
Like the special menu for food. It is good food and changes often.
Like the Barley Beer Society card. It cost about $60 and gets you a free beer each visit of any type you have not tried. Also happy hour prices all of the time.
We eat here often and so we have lots of times to evaluate.
We come often to take advantage of our Barley Beer Society cards which give us a beer every time we come in. But we wouldn't eat dinner here so often (2-3 times a month at least) if the food specials were not SO good. They have a seriously good chef here and friendly efficient service. I agree it can get loud and crowded inside and we eat outside anytime the weather allows. The regular menu is a step or two up from most bar food but the specials are far above.
This isn't a new brighton area gem, this is a Minnesota gem. Absolutely wonderful menu, and food that goes above and beyond. The burger was one of the most flavorful, clean burgers I've ever had (with plenty of options). MN influenced salads and apps taste like the fields the ingredients were plucked from! So fresh, so good! Everyone needs to try it. Will return regularly.
Great Beer - Great Food - REALLY LOUD. If you can get past the EXTREMELY LOUD very small dining room - in which you can barely hear the person across from you talking due to the noise, and the Extreme HEAT from their funky HVAC system, you will have some of the best micro-brew beer (brewed on premises) and really recommendable food and incredible house made deserts in the Northern Twin Cities.
Try it.. Great place for good food, great beers and reasonable prices. They aren't afraid to to do a rare burger if you like something with a pulse. They make a good hummus appetizer that could do as a entree. Above average pasta dishes. The Urban Spoon shows entrees at $20-25, ($$$) but you'd be hard pressed to find something in that price range. They have several good to excellent brews, also reasonably priced, many in the high alcohol range. Don't expect "Hi, my name is Brittani and I'll be your server today." This place is kinda blue collar clicky with quite a few "good ole boy" regulars hanging on the bar, but it beats the hipster crowd. I like to go on a Saturday aftenoon to avoid the crowds. They have a happy hour, but it's shoulder to shoulder crowded and hard to get service.
Brewing Excellence. I concur with the positive remarks of the past reviewers. For those who like great beer, tasty food, and comfortable surroundings....this brew pub may be for you. Barley John's is how brew pubs were before the larger chain brew pub/restaurants were prominent. This has a genuine, neighborhood feel to it. The two beer varieties I had: Stockyard IPA and Wild Brunette were two of the best brewed beers I've had in a long time. I can whole heartedly recommend the Minnesota Hot Artichoke Dip and Laura's Pizza. Ask what the vegetable of the day topping is for Laura's Pizza; mine was Brussels sprouts. Normally not my favorite, but well prepared for this pizza.
New Brighton's version of the Muddy Pig (St. Paul). Fantastic beer selection. Laid back feel. Local character.
In town on business, was right around the corner from my hotel. I had two pints of their seasonal tap "smoked porter" and the "Pizza J" for dinner. Beer was excellent, and I ate the entire pizza by myself (its not tiny). I highly endorse! On the small side, so get there early!
Barley Johns is one of my favorite places in the TC metro. The beer, both their own brews and the guest taps are always worth the trip but above that, BJs has some of the best whiskey prices per shot anywhere. When they have it, I always opt for the Little Barley Bitter, just in love with that beer as well as the wild rice brew. The food is always great at a price that is not gonna hurt you too terribly. Summer time on the enormous patio is the best spot to drink a beer in the city, not jocky, annoying or full of douches. Absolutely a great spot.
Can't believe I have not been here before!. I went to Barley John's Brew Pub for the first time last night and was blown away! My husband made the choice to go here because he wanted to get a growler and when we first approached the building it was not what I thought it was going to be at all! However, after sitting down and reading their menu I was beyond excited because EVERYTHING sounded so delicious! We started off with the Minnesota Artichoke Dip which was quite flavorful and different than usual artichoke dip as it had wild rice and water chestnuts in it-YUM! I got a Wild Brunette which is a brown ale beer and it had wonderful hints of wild rice (this was the one we ended up going with for the Growler.) Both of our main dishes were great and I can't wait to go back to try more!
House Brew and Seasonal Taps a Beer Snobs Place. Small and quaint with fantastic service and great food!
This place offers seasonal as well as small batch house and guest beer great for beer snobs and novices a like. They also have a wide selection of whiskeys and scotch available.
The food is all handmade and exceptionally fresh. They also have vegetarian fair as well. This place is small so if you have to wait for a table to open it will be well worth it!
5 out of 5
Beer and food gem just outside of Minneapolis. Barley John's occupies what use to be an A&W Rootbeer building some years ago. There's plenty of onsite parking but it can get just a bit cramped during dinner hours on Friday & Saturday nights. You first enter into the bar area which consists of a bar that seats 8 people made out of an old oak tree from John's grandma's front yard. There are also 2 tables made out of sections of the same tree in that area. Those 2 tables have built in cribbage boards. The dinning room seating is made up of 10 tables. It's small and cozy. Behind the bar they have 16 taps with both house beers and a number of great commercial brews. To the right of the bar is the entry to the small brewing system and you will find the place filled with the smell of them brewing from time to time (what a great smell). They make a number of regular beers and have 2 seasonals on at a time. All of them are GREAT. They offer the strongest beer in the state (possibly in the world but it was never lab tested). The food menu is very nice with everything from pizza to sandwiches and burgers to a number of entrées. They also have a great daily menu, so make sure you ask. A number of others have listed Barley John's as being a bit pricey. What they may not realize is that the ingredient they use you won't find anywhere else in the cities. Lots of organic and very fresh items. From what I've been told they make very little if any profit on many of the dishes because of the quality of ingredients. The staff members are very friendly. Always willing to go out of their way to make your stay more enjoyable. Most know a good amount about the beers on tap and if you happen to get Rob he can tell you just about anything about beers from all over the US. There is a great outside area that more then doubles the dinning area in the summer. They have a fire pit with a fire going year round. There's nothing like sitting out in 0º Minnesota winter weather around a nice fire drinking down a great beer. There are lots of regulars and all are very friendly so strike up a conversation. They have live music a couple nights a week (summer is best for the music as you can sit outside and enjoy a beer while you listen and enjoy the little bit of summer we see in Minnesota). Overall Barley John's is the best brewpub in the Twin Cities area (as much as the Town Hall worshipers here will disagree and cry).
Isn’t it great when you discover a restaurant/bar/coffee shop that just feels comfortable, like home? That’s the way that I feel when I step into Barley John’s Brew Pub, just north of Minneapolis in New Brighton.
Burgers are the best kept secret in town. Anybody doing a "best of the Twin Cities" burger tour should get one. Or if you are just a guy who likes really fresh burgers.
We picked a beautiful summer evening to visit and dine on the patio! The beers were refreshing but not as flavorful as other local craft taps in the area. My son loved the kids cheeseburger, however the adult cheeseburger special was too dry. I ordered a sandwich custom as a wrap and it was great! Our server was attentive and a sweetheart!
Favorite local place! The BEST artichoke dip you will EVER have. Seriously. Highly recommend making it for their lunch menu and their Pizza J is yum yum!
This is a hidden gem! Fantastic food delicious beer. It’s on the smaller side so my suggestion is to go with as few people as possible and go during non-busy hours for your first time. After that you’ll know it’s worth it and won’t mind the wait.
Excellent value, good beer, amazing specials. Monday has $10 burger (absolutely top notch, fabulous quality) fries and a beer. Service was good. There's a patio. Many beers brewed in house. Free parking. Good food menu. Happy hour specials thorought the week. Will definitely be back.
Barley Johns is a go to spot. Cozy patio, awesome beer, and really tasty natural food. It’s the perfect place to just chill.
Really good food and pretty good beer, too. Barley John's is a great local place for decently crafted beer and really good pub grub. Their garlic mayo on their BLT is absolutely dreamy!
I would give them a five star review, but their space is in dire need of updates and expansion. The owner really should expand out back and out the side to increase the square footage, offering the patrons more space to sit in, more space for the kitchen staff, and much more needed space for the brewer. It's amazing that they're able to get anything done at all in how little space they have.
Still, they are a must-stop destination for local beer and good food. Despite their size, it is a great place to eat and have a beer or two. But because of their size, don't be surprised if the wait time for your food is a little bit longer than you might like. I think the kitchen size inhibits their ability to deal with lunch/dinner rushes. I personally have had to wait up to an hour to get my food on some of the busier lunch hours during the summer. But your mileage may vary.
Barley Johns is a cherished fixture in the New Brighton community by its residents and patrons — I just wish the owners would continue to invest and expand in this hidden gem in our community. Right now it just seems like their only desire is to maintain status quo. And that is unfortunate.
Burger was delicious, brown ale beer was good, too. Room was a bit noisy, but C19 precautions left me feeling safe.
