Review Peking Chinese Restaurant - Muscatine

Ryan Tozier
I would give negative stars if it were an option. We ordered sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, chicken lo mien, egg rolls and crab Rangoon. It was $55 and change. It was ALL…I mean …ALL disgusting! The sweet and sour chicken was soggy and gross tasting. The “sweet and sour sauce” was more like fluorescent red jelly. The fried was was literally just white rice with some scrambled egg in it. The chicken in the lo mien was grey, fatty and slimy. The sauce it was in was disgusting, fatty sludge. The egg rolls and crab Rangoon were awe filling as well. I cannot believe for a second that any positive reviews for this place are legit. Obviously standards are pretty low in Muscatine otherwise! We threw everything away. We tried to eat it and our first bites were spit out. Horrible!

used to go here when I was young. it’s almost a tradition with me and my family to go here. we have a lot of memories. even the old owners knew us. Now we come in and we get sat by waitresses… food is okay not delicious like it used to be. The egg rolls got smaller which me and my family thought was very weird. I noticed the tea changed, it’s VERY strong and leaves a bitter sour taste in your mouth. service is quite slow, and prices have risen since. multiple people have complained about the issues yet there’s no improvement

**Update** I am upgrading my review from a 1 star, to a 3 star. The last few times I have returned, their food was nearly there. Not quite but nearly. I am taking two points off for the food portions and the price increase - $3 a meal - even with everything raising, that’s pretty hefty. Especially compared to food portions they now give. The pot sticker and egg roll size are still too small from what it once was. The amount of food they give you, compared to the old owners, is definitely less. Also still have an issue with the meat to veggies ratio. If you’re reading this new owner sir or ma’am, we like meat 🥩. However; the new owners have definitely upped their game on the flavors. Hopefully whoever was cooking the last few times, stays. Please stay. Please 🙏🏼. I can’t quite say it’s the same Peking as before, but it is getting there. The sauces are being filled more for to go orders and the soup broth now has flavor again 🙌🏼. Maybe salt was just on back order? Idk. I just hope the flavors are here to stay🤞🏼** Original Review: I am beyond disappointed. I have lived and breathed Peking, going back 20 years. I even worked there for a few years. Since the new owners have taken over, It is no longer Peking. The food is tasteless, oily and only a half a notch above gross. They have put a lot more vegetables and less meat in meals. The dishes are runny (watery) or have Way too much oil in them. One time it literally did not even taste like there was a drop of salt or flavor in the Mongolian beef. Seriously, I felt I was eating the paper bag it came in. The General Tso Chicken was flavorless and didn’t even look the same the last time we got it. That was 3 notches below gross. Had to throw that very expensive meal out. The meal I just ordered had reheated egg rolls. Sauces were barely half full. The size of the potstickers has gone down by Half the size that they should be. The soup broth (if there is even any broth in your soup) is literally just hot water. Not an ounce of flavor in it. They gave me a side a vegetables. No soup. Just vegetables. Don’t get me wrong, I love my veggies but can a girl get a side of soup at least? Like maybe a small sauce container full, possibly? I buy fried rice all the time and now it’s in a small box, rather than a big one. We already don’t get enough rice with the meals! I used to go every Sunday but now it is maybe every other month. I go back in hopes that they finally got it together but it just isn’t there anymore. I should have bought Peking because I would have done it much greater justice than this. If you’re new there, you might maybe like it, depending on if they have salt in stock. However, if you were a lifer like me, you will be very disappointed. Very sad situation after Shun-yu, Ming and their husbands worked so hard to build it to what it once was. Hopefully some day it will return but it’s definitely not in the near future.

Awful! Truly awful! No flavor. If you hate Chinese food and think recipes out of a 1970’s cookbook written by a white lady who didn’t really know how to cook Chinese food is authentic or good Chinese food, this is the place for you!!! If you like Chinese food and you enjoy flavors this is NOT the place for you. My Chicken and mushrooms was mostly an unmentionable soup and the carrots in it were carrot coins right from the frozen section of a grocery store - not cut correctly. I can promise if you asked to tour the kitchen, they are not cooking in a wok. So the cook on the food is off. Sauce is not made correctly. Way too much big the sauce (which again wasn’t good). The pork fried rice was not made correctly. It might “look similar” to a fried rice, but fried rice it is not!!! Whoever is cooking could go to YouTube or TikTok and get better recipes. The methods and ingredients are WRONG!!! Now, let’s talk about the prices. WOW!!!! I paid $13 for that small box of chicken and mushrooms (which was a soupy mess). All together between the entrée, pork fried rice, and fried Wonton, I spent $34!!! All that money on food I could barely choke down because it was just NOT GOOD! More embarrassed at the idea I paid that much money on a meal I didn’t enjoy at all… bottom line … don’t eat there - ever!

Have ate here for 8 plus years. Always have enjoyed it until the last 5 times we have orded. I figured it was just some management issues since the new owners took over but something is definitely different and this was our last order. Its very unfortunate was a good eatery.

Totally disappointed. This was the first place I took my wife when we were dating 30 years ago. Had gone back several times but have moved out of muscatine. Went back and took friends, after not being there for several years. I was so disappointed with the food. I heard it went to different owners and that explains why it was so bad

No more lunch specials on weekends. Quality of food has gobe down. We ordered their famous egg rolls and you could tell meat was bad and old. Last time as well service took over an hour to get our entrees so had to ask for to go. I drive an hour away cause it was so good before. Now not so much.

This place has been garbage lately. The food does not taste anything like it use to. I realize food prices are going up everywhere lately but expect to pay a lot of money here and have terrible quality of food. I use to eat here frequently but I have not had quality food out of this place for awhile now. Never again will I eat here. Yuck
