Review Ogawa Japanese Restaurant - Morgantown

Madeline May
I couldn’t run to give a review fast enough. I’m still eating. Their service is TOP NOTCH. The kindest people. Felt like family and I only got take out for my hotel! I was barely there! My soup was hot to go, my sushi was great. So glad I went here!!

Not only exceptionally great food, but super friendly servers. Parking made me anxious but if you’ve been there before, you’ll know there’s a dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant.

I used to love this place: great sushi, great service, great ambience. But it recently changed hands and the changes I saw have not been good ones: 1 - skimping on sushi. There is now more rice than filler 2 - no more wine/sake/beer, as they are waiting for their new license 3 - Weird sappy christian music playing. When I asked the waitress if we could have Japanese music she said that this is the endless loop the new owners play all day: christian music and some kind of valentine's day mix. The staff is sick of it but there's nothing they can do. 4 - We had our usual sushi (see above) and also ordered gyoza. It was delicious, but served in some kind of flimsy cardboard hot dog tray, with no plates. Hard to hold and eat without anything to catch the dripping. The gyoza sauce had been replaced by plain soy sauce. I think the food is still good quality, but these "cost saving measures" cannot be saving much and they are definitely a turn-off. Hope things improve soon.

Looks like a hole in the wall but a very cozy and delicious restaurant on the inside. Servers were nice and when a mistake was made with my order, everyone promptly fixed the mistake and made sure I walked out with a smile on my face. I truly think it's the best sushi place in Morgantown.

Easily the best sushi in Morgantown. Consistent nigiri and sashimi. Inventive - and large - maki. Very good cooked Korean food as well. The bulgogi box is hard to beat for a lunch special, and for non-sushi eaters there are dozens of other cooked options as well. Takeout orders are always packed in a visually pleasing manner, and they make sure you have plenty of utensils and sauces separately. For a landlocked area, this sushi can’t be beat.

The sushi is great but they need a better air filtration system there. I always smell like fried food when I leave.

The staff are friendly and the food is amazing. Definitely recommend the Sizzking Seafood Bowl if you're into various seafood, or the Nabeyaki Udon if you like noodle soups. The Tako Yaki is good for an appetizer, but do note it has octopus if that's not your thing. Can't say much about the sushi, haven't tried it, but it looked good. You get a little miso soup bowl when you come in, which is pretty good. Definitely give this place a chance!

One of my favorite places to eat! I love the sushi rolls here! The bento boxes are amazing also. But my all time favorite is the seafood okonomiyaki. If you have not tried okonomiyaki you really need to it is beyond amazing and Ogawa makes the best in town. Also the poseidon roll is insane. I love eel and this roll (even though it is $20) is delicious and worth the price. The eel is so good. By far my favorite roll in town and my favorite place to get sushi. Update: 04/26/18 Lunch bento box photos

We've visited Ogawa several times over the past few months, and we've never been disappointed. The sushi is delicious and fresh, and the staff is fantastic. Ogawa has quickly become one of our favorite restaurants in Morgantown!

Always delicious! The sushi is excellent! They have a nice selection and many variations to choose from. The beef bulgoki is also excellent! And I love the dol-sot bi-bim bop and the bok-um bop too! Highly recommend this establishment...one of my favorite restaurants to go to!
Elizabeth Tripp DeWitt
My husband is from the area and he introduced this place to me a few years ago. I insist we stop every time we visit! The Dolsot Bi-Bim Bop is our favorite! Always delicious!

Monday night dinner - Delicious sushi! Great “hidden gem” atmosphere.

So so good!! Looks like a whole in the wall but very tasty and good prices. A lunch meal is $8 and has a large amount of food. Spicy noodles were amazing!! Friendly service. Already planning to return:)
Daniel Miller
Ogawa is the best place in Morgantown to get quality Korean and Japanese food with good service at a reasonable price.
Stefanie Davis
They have the best sushi and friendly staff. Would recommend to anyone
Christa Lynn Sapp Barker
Best lunch spot! Get the Bento box special and you will not be disappointed, and you will not leave hungry! Excellent fresh sushi, fantastic Bulgogi, and light crispy tempura. If I could give 6 stars I would!
Paul Andrews
Delicious food. I’ll be back. A few more premium sake options would be nice tho

Everytime my boyfriend and I visit Morgantown, we venture out to Ogawa because our many tastes in sushi. We've brought several family members there and it's the best service!! My mom lives in Florida and she stated how much she loved the food!! Great atmosphere, BEST sushi, and wonderful service!!
Daniel Jacobs
Always had good service and great sushi, by far my favorite sushi in town!
E Baynard
Terrible service! Waited for over an hour for sushi that was only ok. Had to threatened to walk out to get better service. Not worth coming back.
Melissa Juarez
Greatest Japanese restaurant I've gone to so far! Hope to some day go again, really recommend it.
Sarah Hart
Best sushi in Morgantown. Also a romantic Valentine's Day location ;)
Chelsey Epperly
Wonderful food, terrible service. We always end up waiting a very long time for our boxed lunches. We very seldom get refills, so drink your beverage sparingly. We also asked TWO different waiters for tempura sauce and never got it. Finally we just left money on the table and left.

I'm a regular at Ogawa! Best sushi in Morgantown, in West Virginia, maybe even on the east coast.
Megan Wilmoth
First time here yesterday and it was amazing!!!! I can't wait to come back!!

In two words, not good. We spent the night in Morgantown and were looking for a good sushi restaurant. It looked like folks here liked Ogawa so we gave it a go. Unfortunately, it was one of the worst sushi experiences we have ever had. The fish was not very fresh overall. The prices were also fairly high for portion size. I don't know how Ogawa compares to the other japanese restaurants in West Virginia, but this place would be bottom of the barrel in our part of North Carolina....
Kris
Service is chaotic, slow, and full of errors. Bathroom is dirty, the floor in the restaurant is sticky. I recommend eating elsewhere. Oh and the food does not resemble the pics provided on here by Sher.
Ebabyreslanes
Yummy. The sushi is very delicious! "Come hungry leave happy "
TAI
After several mediocre-horrible experiences, I'd recommend trying the other Japanese/sushi competitors in town.

Nice place for lunch. Friendly staff, nuce and clean. you should try the lunchbox, great deal

Service...eh...food...yay!. Had lunch with a friend. Service wasn't the best; took time to get water refills even after requests. Had multiple people waiting on us which was confusing. Food, however, was great and prices reasonable so I can overlook the service. Loved the Ramen. Can't wait to come back!
Jessica
Not bad, but not particularly spectacular. I want to try Ogawa again because it wasn't a bad experience, but also because their menu is so expansive that I'm sure there must be something on it that I'll love. The prices seem a little high for the quality of food, but then, it might just be that their tempura technique is not that awe inspiring. Worth checking out, though!
Clay
Absolutely Amazing. I usually don't eat a lot of Japanese, Chinese, or Korean food, so when my friends finally convinced me to try Ogawa I was skeptical to say the least. The restaurant looks a little run down from the outside, but the inside of the place is really warm and is extremely clean and well kept. After being seated, we were presented with their normal menu, as well as their sushi menu. The sushi menu is huge, with way too many choices for me to even be able to comprehend. I decided instead on a Lunch Box, specifically the Bul Go Ki box. The box came with marinated beef, California roll, salad, rice, shrimp tempura, as well as Miso soup. Everything in the lunch box was spectacular, and the marinated beef was to die for. I had absolutely no complaints, and I cannot wait to return. Excellent!!!

Great Homemade Food. Outstanding is all I can say. One of the best sushi restaurants I've been to...in a city like Morgantown. The place doesn't look like much, but don't let looks fool you. They freshly import fish everyday, and it goes well beyond that. Everything I've ever had there has been great, and I know you don't hear homemade often in Asian cuiseine but nothing seems frozen or pre-prepared.

Outstanding Food!. This is one of my favorite restaurants! It is owned by a chef and he knows quality food. The sushi, rolls, miso soup, lunch box, and ginger dressing are especially good. We really enjoy dining there, and recommend it.

2nd best sushi in town. Great deal$ with the lunch box $pecial. Yum yum
Jerry McVicker
Always fresh and tasty. Service is fantastic. Sushi is fresh. Lunchbox specials are great value. Highly recommended.

AMAZING!. I went to Ogawa and had an amazing experience. Of course I went for the Lunch Box which is only $6.95! I went during the week, which is when it is served. I will always refer this place for a great time.
Jake Wright
Went to Ogawa on a Sunday and they had signs it front and in the store advertising the $6.95 lunch box special. We asked our waiter (who knew only enough English to describe "lunch" and "no") if what we were ordering was part of the special. He vehemently assured us that it was. We asked again. Yes. We asked a third time. Still part of the special. When we got the bill, the total price was about four times the advertised and expected amount. Our waiter denied telling us that our meals were part of the special. Another waitress came over and claimed to talk to the manager who would not do anything for our bill and refused to come out and talk to us (it's a small restaurant, so he would have had to walk about fifteen feet).
Our waiter would come by us and then walk away while we were still talking. The other waitress trash talked the whole place and told us that if we ever came back, get an American waiter.
The food was good...But not worth the trouble of the service or quadrupled bill.

Fantastic food, horrific service. Ok, i am never THAT guy . . . but it must be said.
the food is SPECTACULAR. however . . . . the cons outweighed the excellent food:
1) the waitstaff were clueless, ungodly slow, and indifferent about customer satisfaction. when i asked for low-sodium soy sauce it took well over 5 minutes to get it. and i was given the sauce in PACKETS. i'm shocked that a sushi restaurant would do this. my order was uncomplicated, yet it took WAY too long to actually get the food.
2) parking is severely limited.
3) the atmosphere was nice but i was overly warm. oddly enough i like to be warm, but i felt like i was on the verge of sweating at one point during my meal (and it wasn't due to the wasabi--the wasabi portion was too small)
it really pained me to leave a bad tip. i used to be a full-time waiter for years. but the service was awful.
the food, though, is spectacular.
would i come back? probably not. would i get take out? probably.
Suzann
Not pleased. I used to go to Ogawa for sushi until other sushi options opened up in Morgantown. The waitstaff is friendly, but they are not willing to fulfill minor changes to the sushi rolls (I found this very difficult as I currently cannot eat raw fish due to pregnancy). Also, better sushi rolls can be found elsewhere in town at a better price. I have not tried their other menu options outside of the sushi menu, so I can only speak on behalf of my experiences with their sushi items, but I don't plan to eat there again.

Great Sushi, lots of college kids. My husband and I went here for Valentine's Day. I had the Paradise roll, which had an incredible blend of sweet and spicy. Excellent! My husband found a great steak dish that satisfied his aversion to all things sushi. We had a wonderful meal! Wonderful service, accomadating staff. Bathroom was freezing...Parking is small, but we got front row. Place was super crowded with college kIds, but it was Valentine's day. We'll definitely go again!
Sam
The best Japanese restaurant in WV. I've been eating sushi for a long, long time. This is the best place to eat sushi and sasimi in West Virginia. Trust me, other Japanese restaurants in Morgantown are jokes.

So Yummy. This is easily the best sushi place in town. Although a bit sketchy from the outside, the inside is very nice. The rolls are huge and you are definitely getting the most for your money. Not only that, but the other non-sushi menu items are delicious as well. Some of the servers are a bit inexperienced but other than that I have no complaints. There is a huge selection of rolls and other meals. Highly recommend!

Best Sushi Place in Morgantown. My husband I have just started to really enjoy sushi in the past 5-6 years. We live in rural West Virginia and it is hard to find. There are other places that sell great sushi in Morgantown, but Ogawa is the best! It is reasonably priced, quaintly decorated and staffed with friendly chefs and servers.

Best of all, it is kid-friendly. The other sushi places in Morgantown are not.
Krista
Fantastic, quiet place!. Awesome place to go for a casual night and great food. Quiet atmosphere, decent prices, and fantastic sushi! Some members of the waitstaff and a little in your face but other than that I love the place! I will always come back for more!
Ana
Amazing atmosphere...on the inside. Parking is a little funny. And why crabstick and not real crab?
Shannon
Great when the students are gone!!. Ok so parking may be a bit sketchy but there is a little lot behind the old gas station.
Now the real fun begins. I always just push the other menu aside and start on my paper and pencil sushi order. All the regulars are there and some reeeeally inventive rolls. I went there for my best friend's bachelorette dinner and we had a canoe of sushi. She loved the spicy tempura roll. I loved the country boy roll (it had egg, cream cheese, salmon, tuna and asparagus). Delicious. I tried the infamous 'Love Roll' and it was pretty good! I like the simple vegetable rolls and Alaska rolls too. The ambiance is fantastic and the prices are very reasonable. The hours have expanded and the place rarely gets overcrowded like it used to. Love this place for casual and special occasion. I love how the new owners got very well versed staff and kept the old favorites on the menu. Well done, sir!

Fantastic Sushi!!. The sushi here is absolutely amazing!! I have tried sushi in several other cities and I still think that Ogawa is one of the best!! The rolls are large and the fish is always fresh!
The only downside is that the place is always super packed and it takes forever to get food. I guess when you are in that high of demand, it takes a little while for them to make all that food!!
Seriously one of my FAVORITE restaurants
Morgan
HORRIBLE!!!. I went here and had the worst expierence ever. The servers were trash talking the owners and cooks blaming everything wrong on them. The food came out way too long and my order was wrong twice. The old ogawa was 100 times better. Very disapointing and I will not be going back here again. If you want sushi go somewhere else!

I've tried sushi in so many cities, yet I find that ogawa is my favorite. Their love roll, WVU roll, and any spicy rolls are top notch. I'd recommend any sushi lover to their establishment.
Professor Food
Great Food, Well Priced. My wife and I have been here a dozen times over the last several years. We don't have any money, so the fifty dollars we spend here is a real splurge. While I can't say we've never had a negative experience (my wife and a carload of her friends had one nightmare visit), I can attest to Ogawa's general consistency: consistently good, and truly well-priced for decent sushi. (I would know--I've eaten sushi in Houston, Boston, Seattle, and points in between.)

Sometimes the crowd noise or music is distracting, and the place can get busy, and the service a bit slow, on a weekend, but I've never been particularly annoyed by any of it. This is our "everyday" date-night restaurant; as long as Ogawa keeps offering high quality sashimi and sushi, I don't see that changing.
Suzann
Great!. All I can say is, the Love Roll II and the Mountaineer Roll are amazing!
Kay
New Management. I tried Ogawa with trepidation after new management took over, but the sushi is still excellent. I'm not a lover of mayo, so I wish there weren't so many rolls with spicy mayo, but that's a universal complaint I have for sushi places. And no fist bumping while I was there.
Celticchrys
Still decent, but no longer superb. Since the new management took over, some things have changed for the worse. All spicy rolls now have a strong sesame flavour, the new brand of soy sauce is so salty it ruins anything you put it on(and I love salt!), and some great dishes are no longer on the menu. I've gone form eating there 2-3 times a week to about once a month.

There are still some great things to be had here. The noodle special dishes are good. Some of the sushi rolls are still good, but do NOT get any that come covered with a soy-based sauce, be prepared for smoky sesame flavour in your spicy rolls(not neccessarily bad, but even so). Ask for low sodium soy sauce, and they will bring you packets, and this will be edible. Tell them you only have an hour to eat lunch when you arrive, and remind them any time they slow down. Still good miso soup and seaweed salad. However, prices have gone up, and the wait staff is much slower than before. The kitchen is much faster now than the sushi chefs, so you will not get a sushi roll before a cooked meal comes most of the time.

Still good for a treat now and then, but no longer so addictive.

Hate new ogawa. I was also one of the regular customers, and one average ate there about 2-3 times a week. The new ogawa gives sushi a bad name. They really americanized their rolls which i hate! I understand that some people like california rolls but seriously you dont have to put it on your menu 10 times 10 different ways. Also i asked to have my roll tweaked and they REFUSED!!! old ogawa knew what they were doing- new guys need to bump it up. I have since taken my business to dragonfly -

Gone down hill. I used to frequent Ogawa several times a week for their tasty sushi. I would go for their sushi sandwich (which was divine) and their Funky Roll. Ever since Ogawa changed management, all the great stuff is gone from their menu. It seems like they are pushing sauce-drenched, americanized sushi, and frankly it doesn't measure up. Service takes forever. It took them twenty minutes to get me a class of water. The owner is kinda weird, insisting I give him a fist-bump upon walking in the door (what happened to a handshake?) Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I returned two weeks later, to see if maybe they got their act together, and I was disappointed yet again. I can't say I'll ever return.

Delicious! Would recommend the Red Devil. Amazing. Plenty for those who don't like sushi too! Knowledable, helpful staff... Worth a trip...

BRING BACK OLD OGAWA. I was a FREQUENT and bye frequent I mean biweekly customer of Ogawa. The new chefs SUCK! They don't know how to make sushi. It was extremely dry and I drank two glasses of water just eating one roll!! I wanted sushi, not salty! HORRIBLE MENU!! Everything we once loved is now gone. I'm afraid to say Ogawa was the #1 sushi in Morgantown. WV is without its amazing sushi masters. I will not ever be going back to Ogawa unless the management changes back.
Jamaal Johnson
BRING BACK THE OLD OGAWA!. I'm gonna be straight up and not candy coat this.. If you were a frequent Ogawa customer and loved their menu. YOU WILL HATE THE NEW OGAWA! Portions sizes have been minimized and prices have gone up! Our favorite rolls that we grew to know and loved have been expunged. The menu size has been decreased my more than half and the interesting and innovative rolls are no more. What happened to the "if it aint broke don't fix it" ? Now I can't make this review completely bad.. The sushi they do have is still good.. just overpriced and nothing to write home about. Ok, thats enough venting from me for the day. Go there and see what I meen.
Courtney Ostaff
Super-Japanese!. If you love Japanese food, you're in luck. Sushi, seafood, rice, miso - all there, and all excellent quality. Sadly, I just don't like seafood. ;)
Rjrichard
Best in town by far. I love this place. I tend to go at least once a week and the sushi is great. I've never had a single piece of fish that tasted old or not fresh. The chefs behind the counter are friendly and the staff will answer any question you have and if they don't know they'll find out. The decor is a little stale but the food makes up for it easily. If you want sushi in Morgantown (or WV) go here!
Joao
Everyone should go there. The best place in the town... I am a sushi lover, I have been eating sushi for the past 18 years, I was surprise that in the middle of WV I could get a very good sushi.

Ogawa is, as far as I know, one of the oldest sushi bars in town. I lived in Pierpont Apartments my first year at WVU , and Ogawa is located practically next door on University Avenue . My then-roommate was much more cultured in terms of cuisines, and I owe my love for sushi to her. Other sushi bars have popped up: Dragonfly , Volcano Restaurant and hibachi restaurants , but Ogawa has that lasting power in town. I think, for quality sushi, Yama has the downtown area covered. Ogawa has Evansdale, and Volcano hits the Suncrest area. That point, however, would be sure to cause some controversy because many are unhappy with Ogawa. It's like one of those bands who "sold out" - apparently they got new owners, a few times, and the food has gone downhill. I can't really speak much on that fact because I've only been in the Morgantown area going on five years now, and I hadn't been to Ogawa enough early on to compare. I've heard many, many people say "I used to go there, but since they got new
