Chef Chao Restaurant

Food was super salty and expensive now. I picked what looked like one of their more authentic dishes, the Szechuan Beef, believing I could try something new. When I started wolfing down the food I felt the meat was way too salty. This was much different than what I experienced before. I think they changed owners or chefs. Looks like one place is off my list.

Spent $192 on a takeout order, they wanted us to prepay before making, didn’t go over the order because it was “too long” for them to recite (the cashiers words), went to pick up at the allotted time, they handed me 2 bags of food, didn’t go over the order (again), I asked for a receipt, they gave me a receipt with just the total cost on it, not itemized, came home, missing 2 pork orders (2 of each, so 4 boxes total), the orange chicken and lemon chicken ordered tasted the same, the only difference is they put lemon slices on the “lemon chicken”, had a plate with a scoop of rice and a scoop of veggies (which was not ours and it just looked like someone’s leftovers), called them to talk and get the rest of the pork order, the cashier said they were closing and to call and speak to the manager the next day. It has been 3 days and nothing has been made right. Never going here again.

The absolute worst food experience ever. First it’s my first time in Moraga and I was starving! Had a flight from east coast that was delayed — so it was like 11 hours of a trip!!! could not eat indoors Bc my friend forgot their vaccine card — so we ordered to go. I ordered nearly 100 dollars worth of food! It was prepared in less than 15 minutes!!! HOW? There was absolutely no flavor NONE! It was absolutely inedible and outside of the fried rice, I couldn’t eat any of it! The phrase rice really wasn’t barely but cooked so it really wasn’t what I would call fried it was more like it just had a layer of oil on it!!! All of it was heavily breaded in a way that makes absolutely no sense! There was absolutely NO flavor whatsoever which tells me that this was food that had been from another day and they just heated it up quickly and threw it in a bag. I am so upset about it that I paid $100 for my first meal after a near 11 hour flight and there was no care whatsoever given to this food. They should not be in business and add to this that they don’t automatically include white rice with Chinese food which I guess that’s a thing here in California but that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life!! like HOW?! can you live with yourself at night you don’t include white rice as part of the meal? add a dollar or two to the cost and put some white rice in with your food please. It was truly the worst experience imaginable and I just can’t understand it because it had very high ratings. There is no way they prepared food fresh for us there is just absolutely no way this was yesterday’s food . My first meal of the new year! I should not have paid a dime for that food and honestly it should be refunded to me !

Wow look how many people love this place all four and five star reviews. Me too. Five stars all the way. Some Chinese Restaurant, are good at some of there dishes. At Chef Chao there good at all that they serve. I've Known this place since it started over 40 yrs.ago. I've had everything that they serve here since it's conception. I never did I not love all they've cooked for me. . My Aunt is from China and I grew up on her homemade,from scratch, gourmet, Chinese food. She could really cook. So now I'm extremely picky when it comes to this particular cuisine. So thumbs up, five stars, lot's of 🍅. I only give reviews this good when I know the place really, really well. Happy dining.

I celebrated my PhD yesterday in this delicious restaurant. happy to tell that we enjoyed a superb evening and the restaurant was definitely one of the reasons for this successful meeting. The waiters helped in a splendid style, the food was delicious and my guests were extremely delighted. We shall definitely come back again for more joyful events. thanks very much.

Loved it. The service was great, our drinks never stayed empty but the service was never intrusive. There is a kids cocktail menu which is pretty cool. The onion cake appetizers were great and served with very pungant chinse hot mustard. Our entrees were delicious but definitely required rice which is ordered separately. The honey orange fish filet was amazing and I will definitely come back to order it again.
