Great sushi and drinks, but not very good service. I haven't tried their hibachi grills, but I heard great reviews. Try their lobster roll and anything with scallops and avocado.
I like the ambiance and the vibe of Riptide. I've been a customer for many years. They play music and have tv screens, along with a special motorcycle that was constructed for the restaurant by Orange Coast Choppers on display prominently. They also have a wall of water.
Don't come here looking for traditional rolls but if you are looking for a fun atmosphere to grab a bite with some friends or the fam, this is your spot. They also do Teppanyaki here but I come for their unique sushi rolls that you can't find anywhere else. I recommend their most popular rolls which are...
Tornado Roll - Crab, avocado, spicy tuna with soy paper. Crispy potato, eel sauce and Cruzin' sauce on top.
Sexy Mutha Roll: Shrimp tempura, avocado, and radish sprouts with soy paper wrap.
Spicy tuna, masago, green onion, sesame seeds, spicy mayo, and eel sauce on top.
~CD~. Cool place, kind of like a sushi bar mixed with a banzai type restaurant. Music is terrible pop/rap music that is played loudly throughout the restaurant, but its tolerable. The food was good, but a little overpriced. Sushi rolls start at $10 and then you have the specialty rolls that are pretty expensive. They have a dinner combo with sushi and an entree, but its $25. The one thing i would go back for is the all you can eat sushi on wednesdays or thursdays. that sounds like a deal
Love the steak. I don't know about the sushi because I only go here for the teppan grill. The shrimp and steak are the best I have had at any place like this. The prices are pretty high so we only go here on special occasions.
Riptide in Mission Viejo. Riptide has become a part of Orange County (along with Chomp, its counterpart in Fullerton), partly because it seems to be one of the few businesses in the Kaleidoscope that has flourished (others being the theater and Islands). Its success is understandable when you see the stylish, spacious interior and the large island that the sushi chefs stand in. The size of this huge island gives a lot of room to the sushi bar. You can stretch out and get comfy while waiting for your fish fix. There's also an impressive waterfall-wall type decoration, and a big shiny motorcycle on a kind of pedestal that makes it feel like a nice attention-getting centerpiece. It all comes together to make a space that's tailored to the nightlife crowd, with an impressive bar, big gleaming teppan yaki tables and the the large colorful aquarium in the front.
While Riptide fully embraces the "fun" approach to atmosphere, don't think this is a bad thing where the food is concerned. Huge pink slabs of salmon were draped over a cutting board, just waiting to be artfully prepared. The tuna was deep ruby red, as it should be, and had good firm texture. As I sipped my Sapporo, a new roll came that was wrapped not in rice, but carved strips of cucumber. The contrast between the red tuna and the green cucumber really popped, and it lent itself to pictures well. I am usually more into fish than rolls, but the cucumber wrapping was a nice alternative to rice. The veggies were watery and crisp, and it felt even lighter than sushi usually does. I will definitely get something like this again.
The message to take away is that you'll have a great time at Riptide. Try and get a seat on a Friday or Saturday - it will be a blast. Have some drinks, order some adventurous stuff, and you will not be disappointed. It's not really a Japanese restaurant, (they have burgers and other standard kinds of stuff) but a night-spot where you can get some great food if you're cool with the fact that it's their own interpretation.
I'm a big fan of the crab stuffed mushrooms! Other than that, I can take it or leave it.
This is my favorite spot for sushi in SoCal! Rigo plates the rolls so beautifully. The sushi is always fresh and tasty! I’ve never been disappointed with any of the rolls. Rigo has the best recommendations. I would definitely recommend stopping by for a roll or two!
Appreciate that they also have a tepin kids menu. Food was cooked perfectly. Only negative our party had was no one liked the chunky salad dressing. Not a big deal.
The food at this place is marvellous. The restaurant are well decorated it’s a open kitchen and bar. It serve sushi and grill food. The Chef is super friendly and funny, handsome, and he speak Japanese. The price here is fine, 80$ for 5 dishes. !!! Lifetime experiment!!!
I enjoyed the salmon sashimi served with the spicy tuna salad. The fried rice and mixed vegetables are always my favorite. I also like the cucumber salad! The chefs are always friendly and entertaining!
I gave this place 5 stars for the wonderful waiter we had who was so nice, helpful, & apologetic.
However, I wish more attentiveness was taken into account for our party in which we were seated next to a large & loud celebrating group.
*Our family could not communicate well during our entire meal due to hard of hearing from the surrounding parties.
I had elderly grandparents with us for my son's birthday.
The other minor complaint is that our food took a very long time more so than usual to come to us and we waited so long that it got to a moment where we tried to cancel last sushi roll order.
The wait time for food was unacceptable with senior citizens in our family's party.
I was very impressed with the food, staff, cleanliness, and cost of the meal. I have had sushi from all over the world and highly recommend to anyone who is interested in checking it out!! Please look at the photos as they speak for themselves. It was unexpectedly amazing. I did not expect this from a restaurant of its location.
After a year of being lockdown, it felt like a whole new experience at Riptide. People were out and everyone were having fun and enjoying their meals. My friend and I ate at the bar where Matt, the bartender, took good care of us. Matt has to be one of my favorite bartenders. The drinks and food were so good! I can’t wait to return again.
Love this place - the service is always great and the food is stellar. Try the smoked sashimi, it's a game changer.
Update: still great food for reasonable prices. One of our long time favorites.
Riptide is so good. From the Teppan chefs and great food and seating to the wonderful huge menu of sushi. Everything is good here at Riptide. It’s on the 6th floor so take the elevator.
I go to riptide probably 3 times a week and we always love it. We usually sit at the bar and Miguel is our sushi chef. He does a great job. I have gotten great sushi and sashimi there. Specifically, the salmon is amazing. I recommend this place to everyone. The halibut and mackerel in the photo were amazing
I love teppan, but this place adds a little twist on the traditional "Beni Hana" style. The chefs are fun and friendly for all ages.
Showed up around 830. 2 of us for teppan. Took 10 minutes to get a table. Once seated, we waited about 15 minutes for anybody to come take our order it get us drinks. I think they were waiting for more people to join us and no one did. Food was great, staff was nice, chef was good. Nice restaurant overall. Always busy. Would avoid going during prime times or will be a long wait. I wish they took reservations.
Wonderful food. I recommend these two dishes. They serve two people. That’s enough.
Came here after getting turned away from a big chain hibachi restaurant that couldn’t honor our reservation. I was so lucky to find this place and grateful they were able to seat us pretty quickly. The service was great— our kind waitress cracked a few jokes with us and our teppanyaki chef was a lot of fun. The portions are generous and the food was delicious. The place is very clean and spacious. We’ll definitely be returning.
