Good sushi and good service! There's plenty of other dishes to try like ramen, rice toppings, and a variety of drinks. For kids they even have ramune on top of your regular soda selection;
Cool ambiance with a Japanese baseball theme. Worth it for a date or even a group dinner!

The food was excellent at Kyatchi. It’s just that I spent so many years in Japan, and the price I pay for the same type of food here seems so high. But that’s probably not fair at all to Kyatchi and other local Japanese restaurants so I kept five stars for this review.
The food is authentic and the menu choices are rather unique, like Age-bitashi Donburi, which is something my mother used to cook. Yakisoba dog was great too which is typically served without a hotdog in Japan, along with traditional potato salad made with Japanese mayo and chopped up cucumber, also something my mother used to make.
Hitachino beer is hard to find here, but they had two kinds. I had a glass of Yuzu lager which I highly recommend.
We had a great time and we will be coming back.

Quiet little joint with delicious sushi, rolls, and surprisingly, delicious hotdogs. Lots of beer and sake options. Can’t wait to come back and try more of the menu.

Really great spot for a sharing birthday dinner for a friend. Would absolutely come back to try more menu items. Would have liked more in the realm of what’s available from the sushi options - otherwise no complaints!

If you're looking for a Japanese restaurant in South Minneapolis, you might want to check out this place. While there's no Japanese chef or server on-site, the restaurant offers a beautiful Japanese-themed décor and a menu of delicious Japanese cuisine that has earned it multiple awards, including Best Sushi Award by City Pages and by Mpls St. Paul Magazine. Interestingly, it has also won the award for Best Hot Dog by Star Tribune and People Magazine.
During our visit, I ordered one of my favorites, the "Chef Sashimi Platter," which consisted of colorful and beautifully presented salmon (sake), scallops (hotate), sea bass (Suzuki), Pacific yellowtail (Hamachi), and albacore tuna (bincho). Each piece was well-prepared and incredibly fresh, as promised. While the restaurant didn't have the popular Udo noodle soup, the ramen noodle soup was still quite good.
The restaurant is located in a small business district on Nicollet Ave S, and our waitress Kathleen, dressed in a Girl Scout-like uniform, was very friendly and provided excellent service throughout our meal.
One of the most interesting aspects of this restaurant was that when the bill came, there was no place for a tip. We were told that the general tip was already built into the charges, but additional tips are always welcome. This was an interesting and unique touch. I highly recommend giving it a try!

We got there when they opened at 4pm on a Tuesday. It was mellow and the perfect time to enjoy their happy hour menu. We got a 6pc roll on the happy hour menu with scallop and yuzu, very subtle and satisfying flavor. The Suntory Toki drink was like a effervescent light beer, not something I’d order again. However, the junmai ginjo was the perfect refreshment to pair with the karaage. Lastly, we ordered the Tarasando; enjoyable if you’re in the mood for a hot dog styled fish sandwich.
In the past I’ve ordered the curry and it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ordered!
Next time we’re in minneapolis I’m sure we’ll be back to try more :)
Side note: service was great!

Went on a weekday night so atmosphere was less busy. Service was fantastic, server was very knowledgeable and the Uni and Sushi had unparalleled freshness for a sushi restaurant in the Midwest.
Ramen was okay, IMO a little heavy on the beef bouillon vs umami flavours I had become accustomed to, and it was still extremely filling nonetheless.
Would definitely go frequently to try the other menu items as the first visit knocked our expectations out of the park.

My wife and I went there for happy hour sushi and we felt like this was great value!
We got a negihama roll, Kara-age, and the summer roll.
The negihama roll was ok, but nothing special.
The kara-age was absolutely delicious. The chicken was deliciously browned and with the Mayo dressing was absolutely phenomenal.
The summer roll was delicious. Lemony, creamy, with delicious fish. It was the most delicious sushi roll I’ve ever had.

This was such a wonderful place to bring a date. The drinks were creative and tasty, the food was amazing (I loved my pork tonketsu platter), the environment was charming, and the staff were so kind and passionate about their craft. I look forward to my next visit.

It's winter, and despite sitting in the table right in front of the door we were quite comfortable thanks to the curtain they have set up. Street parking wasn't hard on this early Thursday dinner out with my 14yo who wanted ramen.
We were fortunate to arrive during happy hour and the veggie trio (pictured) was fantastic. I enjoyed a few other dishes as well as the nigori sake. The seabass oshizushi (pressed sushi, pictured) really stood out as a unique but traditional item I haven't seen yet at other local sushi places. My kid reports the ramen as 10/10, mentioning the melt-in-your-mouth pork it contained. The broth was richly flavored (roasty almost?) but light, not the super-thick tonkotsu you might find elsewhere.
No credit card tipping (extra percentage added in menu prices) left me feeling like it was a great value, but wished I could have tipped my server more for his very friendly service.

Fabulous place to get some really good Japanese food. We went during happy hour and the beer and food options were aplenty. I love Japanese style curry and the order, despite being meatless, exceeded all expectations. The kar-age, battered-fried chicken, dipped in the Mayo is always a treat. Maybe next time I’ll order two helpings of karage and add some to the curry. My brother ordered the sub and his only complaint was that the bun wasn’t toasted. It was soft, chewy and tasted good, but was missing that toasted crunch. Last let, don’t skip on the desserts because that miso caramel is amazing. It’s got a deep rich Carmel flavor that is amped up with the miso. It’s slightly salty too. The cheese cake itself is almost fluffy and they typical cheesecake taste isn’t noticeable. The chocolate ganache cheese cake is a nice contrast from the Carmel one with dark chocolate notes with a pinch of salt. I kept alternating between eating a bite of each. Overall a wonderful discovery and would gladly go again.

Came here for a late lunch on a Saturday. We were the only ones in the restaurant which was nice for us, but prob not for them. They just opened for lunch, so pretty sure no one knows. A bit overpriced for the overall experience, but worth checking out.

Very interesting Japanese Fusion spot. We dined on the chicken meatball and pork belly skewers, the flying squid, the Ramen, the scallop maki roll, and the artic char specialty roll.
Loved the decor and atmosphere. The server was super friendly and attentive.
Food all came out great (appropriate temp, excellent presentation, fresh).
Onto the food. The chicken meatball and pork belly skewers were great. Great balance of savory and umami. The char from the grill also played well with the flying squid. The squid is not wasted as you get and entire squid minus the waste parts. The tentacles were a bit chewy, but the body n fin were tender and tasty. My only critique would be the mayo they utilize as sauce for the squid would be better subbed for a sauce of some sort.
I had the sushi rolls. They were both tasty and I could definately recommend both. The artic char roll has a distinct bite of lemon and was a truly fun combo of textures and flavors. The scallop maki were tasy as well, but were needing that dip in soy and maybe a sprinkle of wasabi for kick.
My fiancé had the ramen. She didnt enjoy the broth or how chewy the pork was, it was solid ramen otherwise. It just wasnt anywhere near the best in uptown/midtown area.
Overall Kyatchi exceeded multiple expectations and was a delightful experience.

First of all- the pressed salmon sushi was out of this world! A friend of mine has been RAVING about the pressed sushi for the past 2 years, so my expectations were high. It totally exceeded my expectations- zesty, buttery, and the perfect balance of textures. We also ordered barley tea, gyoza, a red snapper roll, and a yellow tail roll. The yellow tail roll was exceptional. The red snapper was good, but the flavor wasn’t my favorite (personal preference). The gyoza was delightful too. The barley tea was a great addition to the meal and was the perfect warming element on a chilly night. We were satisfied by the amount of food we ordered, but I would recommend ordering a couple of additional rolls if you’re really trying to be pleasantly full after the meal. Overall, great experience. We will be returning soon- probably for happy hour!

We ordered a yellowtail roll, sockeye roll, king salmon sashimi, and a picked plum roll. It was all great tasting. Having the fish rolls and then having the pickled plum roll was a great combo which really worked well together. We each had a bowl of rice to eat the sashimi with, the sashimi was well cut and great tasting. We had hot sake to drink with our meal which was incredible. We were very impressed with the different tastes and the help we received from our waiter.

This place has amazing food, sushi is my personal fave and finding a good spot for that can be challenging. They have Noodle dishes and even fun hot dogs!

Had a wonderful experience at Kyatchi St Paul. I am so happy to have great sushi and ramen on this side of the river. Sara, the owner was wonderful, checking in on us and even telling us the background of Kyatchi. We will definitely be back and bringing our friends & family!

Very impressed. Always up for good vegan sushi, and this place delivers including an outstanding happy hour menu that can easily be made for full dinner at good prices. Even satisfied my sushi monster son, which is saying something.

A wonderful atmosphere with friendly servers, great ramen and excellent nigiri. Highly recommend the place to anybody who enjoys raw fish or a kimchi hot dog. Eat here.

The highest quality fish, precise preparation, creative and sophisticated ingredient combinations, great hospitality, and a killer soundtrack. An obvious effort to create delicious vegan sushi options that surprised and satisfied the meat eaters (both in our party) and reminded us of our experience at L'Arpege. Best sushi I've eaten in town and beyond, actually. Very reasonably priced.

I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to most food, but I'm very particular about sushi. I work at a restaurant with exceptional sushi and japanese food, and I was excited when Kyatchi opened as it seemed promising in a sea of mediocre sushi restaurants. Seriously. It took me ten months to finally try Kyatchi, and it's been delightful. The owner is great! She's been informative and personal. They have tasty vegetarian options, which I think is a pretty good test of a restaurant. Someone's review said that it was expensive, but I thought it was totally reasonable. If you want FRESH food and sushi, eat it here. Some traditional foods, lots of refreshing foods, beer on tap, and you can feel good about what you're eating. I haven't had sake there but they have good choices, along with more than a couple nonalcoholic options. So much YES to this place being open late. Definitely one of my new favorite places.

By far the best Japanese food in town!

Ella was so hospitable and informative. She curated a perfect dining experience for us. We'll be back!

Kyatchi is my new favorite place to dine with my daughter. She has very discriminating taste. This wonderful treasure wins us over every time. Happy hour is after school snack time. I highly recommend the Chirashi for kids of all ages. I am more than pleased the #seafoodwatch guidelines too!

A few things I love in a restaurant all seem to converge at the point of Kyatchi. Great food, a list of things I can drink, attentive service and an inviting atmosphere are all the things I need and they are here. But most importantly is there is none of the pretentiousness that is so in vogue around town lately. It is very warm and welcoming.
Monica Hofe
Kyatchi has fresh, clean tasting food. The happy hour is great.
This is one of my favorite neighborhood spots.

Excellent staff and happy hour! My new after work spot!

This place blew me away. Was it the pristine sushi? The miso cod? The expert, friendly service? The crazy/beautiful mural? The authentic personal vibe? The Monterey Bay Aquarium certified sustainable fish? Yeah.

Delicious and reasonably priced. Will definitely go back!
