Review Republic - Minneapolis

Toni Krasnic
Pleasant outdoor seating. Great burgers; the brigade burger with triple cream brie, caramelized onions, truffled mushrooms and red wine was excellent. Nice selection of local beers.

This is a great spot for lunch or happy hour, and within walking distance from the university’s West Bank. They have an impressive tap list and the menu consists of typical pub fare. Their fries are delicious—extra salty and perfect with a beer. The fish or pork tacos they have on the happy hour menu are also great. I’ve been coming here off and on for the past five years and service is always attentive and friendly. The interior is lovely and has a lot of vintage charm—but in the summer you’ll definitely want to sit outside!

I have been here sooo many times. Honestly i cannot say they have THE best food but they have pretty good food for the price they offer and service is always great. Section and pricing of drinks is great too especially during the happy hour. Dey raspberry beer
Bluekandy
They have great housemade sauces that give a twist on your normal ketchup and mayo. Good menu selection for both brunch and lunch+dinner, and great daily specials (especially the cider night). I tried a few of their ciders and spritzes, and I was most impressed with the grizzly pear cider. Would come back to get that drink on the occasion alongside some good bar food, particularly good tacos

Had a great dinner! Very large, good selection of beers and some great food, both aesthetically and in taste. Highly recommend the Quinoa & Mushroom burger, even if not vegetarian, it is absolutely delicious! Service was good and knowledgeable - was able to help with drink and food selection.

Enjoyed a very nice evening with friends. We had the fried cauliflower with Korean BBQ sauce and the Kimchi nachos as appetizers. I had the fish tacos for my entree. And then ended the evening with dessert. I had the Butterscotch pudding. All were delicious. It is my second time dining here. And I recommend it.

We stopped for a drink before a show nearby. Lots to choose from, I went with a raspberry cider and really liked it. We weren't planning on eating, but my husband wanted to try the poutine. It was actually quite tasty. I was a sceptic, but ended up liking it! Nice outdoor seating too.

Amazing beer and cider selection! Didn't try any of their food but the menu looked interesting. Customer service could be improved as it was difficult to get the bartenders attention, but the beer list alone was enough for me to want to go back.

Well-priced and tasty bar food, burgers, and a fitting selection of beers on tap. Busy and loud wood-furnished bar environs. Cocktails left a little to be desired (sugary, watery?), but that's probably not why you'd go here anyway. Happy hour menu is a good way to save a few bucks.

A little dingy but good array of food and drinks. Good place for after work HH. Had the kimchi nachos which were good but oddly could have used more kimchi...

We were in town and went for brunch with friends that live nearby. Cute place. Every employee was friendly and service was prompt. Food was delicious, even all the kids ate.

Nicely made burger with a decent selection of burgers. Custom ketchup in the house that is.. different. Good in small amounts. Very please over all.

Met as a group here before a Vikings game. Brunch menu with a variety of options, I enjoyed the chicken sandwich. Extensive beer list!
Adam Biessener
Truly exceptional beer list, with great happy hour and late night deals (get the $6 happy hour burger. Trust me). Food is good but not exceptional for the price. I expect greatness from a $12 sandwich, and Republic is just good enough to not annoy me, not so good I recommend it for the food. Great patio, nice dining room. Parking sucks, but welcome to the west Bank.

Good service, nice happy hour details, decent food. I'm not sure the burgers are the same quality they were a year or three ago. Bun disintegrated, tomato was tasteless despite being in season, and bacon was burnt. Fantastic homemade ketchup and really tasty fries. Good beer selection, but our pitcher of Fulton was warm. Plenty of seating on Saturday at 6pm. I remember a few years back having difficulty finding seating at nearly any meal time. If this were my only experience with this place, I would give them three stars, but I have too many good memories of getting great food here in the past, and so I'm hoping this one mediocre experience is not a sign that their standards are slipping.

This is my new favorite place for pub food! They have a small but varied menu with reasonable prices. I recently ate here with two friends; they had the fish and chips which they said was delicious. I had the blackened walleye. It was stupendous! Republic doesn't have domestic beer but a wide selection of craft beers. The service is perhaps the best I've experienced anywhere! The staff was friendly yet not intrusive. After dinner it was pouring rain and very windy, and my friends, who are elderly and blind, didn't want to take the walk back across the street to the parking ramp. A staff member found them chairs inside while I fetched my car. When I pulled up to the door, the staff member had been waiting with them, and she escorted them to my car. What amazing service! This place is wonderful.

After a horrible experience at another pub (some blarney crap,) we came here, our waiter was amazing and the food was awesome on top of the awesome beer menu!! Out of towers check this place out, they even had beer on tap from our hometown local brewers:)

We typically dine in this area late night, so we hit up Republic after 10pm. Here's our thoughts: For starters, the patio is huge and was super nice to sit outside in downtown. With that being said, the chairs are cold metal wired patio chairs and they were not only super uncomfortable, not ideal for ladies in a skirt because the grates will leave indentions on the back of your legs for hours! Lol The service was probably the worst we've had downtown. Almost to a point where we were ordering 2 drinks at a time because we had no idea when the waitress would be back. The food was okay, but definitely overpriced. Our experience wasnt horrible, but we haven't returned since then, despite being in the area quite often, and that says something.

Ordered a turkey burger and fresh fruit (instead of fries) to go. When I opened the box, I got a turkey club sandwich and a bowl of rotten grapes and melons. Was just passing through Minneapolis so I doubt I’ll be here again, but I wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

The food and service was great. The atmosphere was less than appealing though. I hated the loud funk music! Way way way too loud. So many people changed tables. I wish we would have too. Will not go back on night with music blaring.

Our group was treated very well by our server, who was very nice. The food and drinks were great! Love all the sour ale choices! :)

We attempted to have dinner tonight at the MSP location. 3 staff were talking, no one acknowledged us. That's fine, until it's been 20 minutes and 2 of the staff have walked by and ignored you when you said hello. When we said "okay, we will go somewhere where we will get service" the waitress shrugged and went back to talking. Poor customer service. Never again!

We went for the weekend brunch and the menu was wonderful! The food was served quickly and the portions were more than substantial. The service experience was great, albeit we sat at the bar, and the beer selection was incredible. I will definitely go back on my next visit to Minneapolis.

I have to say that I was impressed all around with my visit to Republic. Their tap list was extensive with a lot of variety, their food menu was concise and interesting, and the atmosphere was laid back and comfortable. My guest thoroughly enjoyed his buttermilk fried chicken breast sandwich, while I have nothing but good things to say about the barbecued pulled pork bowl - even though it was advertised as having rice with it, but there was no rice in the bowl. But that really didn't matter because - along with the corn strips, the black beans and peppers mixed in with a fried egg on top with a Cholula enhancement - it was still a very good meal. My friend did it again - he turned me on to another great little place to eat in Minneapolis.

The West Bank of the University of Minnesota has multiple bars within biting distance of each other. Republic is arguably the best among them. With an open air patio and a large indoor seating area it's perfect for the after work lonely drinker, animated couple or a large group. The indoors are dark with high chairs on most tables and a constant smell of local brews coloring the atmosphere. Unless its a Friday afternoon getting a seat is mostly easy.

There is a laundry list of beers and ciders along with a few select mocktails and all rail drinks mostly reasonably priced. There is also a Beer of Day which comes to around 4-5$ per pint and is perfect for anyone who needs alcohol and not decisions at the end of a trying day. The Happy hour offers are generous with 3$ fries served with a delectably sweet ketchup. Other apps have a buck or two off them and so do most drinks. Late nights offer 5$ burgers which is as value for money as things get. The food is generally great with burgers and sandwiches being winners irrespective of what you order. My favorites have been the spicy turkey burger with guac and buttermilk batter fried chicken. The Tacos are a nibble and not a full meal so keep that in mind when ordering. The full plates are good too but at the end of the day it is pub food so bear that in mind before you let your connoisseur muscles kick in.

The service at Republic in all the countless instances I've been here has been great. All servers are smiley and helpful. When the place is swamped expect delays but reach out to any server and they'll find yours for you. Like any busy college bar its always best to get in your orders in one go. Of all the UMN watering holes this is perhaps the only "Grad Bar" but still things get a tad noisy in the evenings. The taste in music is good too which helps in the effectiveness of liquor.

Loved the atmosphere at the Republic and the great selection of beer but I wish I could rave about the food. I had a grilled cheese with tomato and bacon only because nothing jumped out at me on the menu. It tasted ok but it’s pretty hard to screw up that sandwich. Two others I was with ordered the gumbo and it tasted as awful as it looked and I think they had a total of 3 shrimp between the two of them. Would stop here for a beer but will move on to another spot for eats.

Great Burger. I had the fried egg burger. It was juicy and cooked to perfection. Easily the best burger I've had in the city so far.
Dan
Much improved and over 100 beers.

REPUBLIC. Great atmosphere. The interior is very charming and old world. Ice tea is fresh brewed. Bacon burger was cooked to perfection. The only negative experience was slow and less than enthusiastic wait staff. I waited 15 minutes before I was even acknowledged and there were only 10 other patrons.

Your Time Will be Wasted Here!. I would strongly advise against going here! On a recent visit, we waited for over 40 minutes just to get our food...and our drink order had still not come! When we finally hunted down a manager and our waitress, they seemed perplexed as to how to resolve it (i.e., go to the bartender and tell him you need the drinks ASAP). They may have 10,000 beers on tap...but we never got to try one!

The Duck Burger was a little spicy & FANTASTIC. Really unique & delicious. I liked the side salad very much, too. My blonde ale beers from St.L.P. were $5 a pint, but my friend's beers were a surprising $8 each. Prices on the beer menu would help.

Grass-fed Burger. Grass-fed burger with brie and red wine reduction. Amazing!

Redemption is sweet - and includes a tasty burger. I almost forgot the follow up, as I am so happy. Another try at the Republic tonight. Same bar seats, different experience - third time is the charm. Great burgers, attentive and responsive service. There was a salad with the burgers - yes salad, with good dressing. I don't fit into skinny jeans, but I appreciate that (maybe that's why I appreciate that).

In my previous review, through the fog of frustration, I forgot to mention the beer list - it is extensive, and includes my new (probably perennial) favorite: Two Hearted Ale from Bells. On draft. They also have Sweet Child of Vine IPA, which is also a treat.

Well done.

-----03 Feb, 2012-----

The food is good - I think. After two visits, I've only had their fries (with house-made aioli and ketchup); the first time by design, but tonight was a different story. Indifferent service, which led to a long wait to order anything beyond the fries, ensured that the burger I've been anticipating for two weeks was unattainable. Disclaimer: we were sitting at the bar. I assumed that those seated at the bar, having previously expressed interest beyond just the fries in front of him, might get some modicum of attention from the bartender. Not the case. Onesey-twosey beer orders were more important. Ok, message received. I'll try it one more time, but only because my wife likes it. That, and the pub in Eden Prairie, on the way home, I used to like is closed until March, and has become nearly equally indifferent. Burger/beer night shouldn't be this hard.

HH is worthwhile. I met a friend here for Happy Hour and the drinks and food were very reasonably priced. The fish tacos were just okay, and the guac was delightful. My friend tried to order the local sausages, roasted potatoes and mustard entree, but they were out of sausages. Kind of disappointing after hearing good things about it! She had a burger and it was alright, too, but nothing to write home about. I'd say this place is a great place to meet and have a few drinks, but you might be better off walking down the street if you're looking for a fantastic meal.

Great New Restaurant and Watering Hole. This place is great! My wife and I went one of the first nights they were open, and it is a welcome addition to the Seven Corners area. It's not a place to swill 3.2 beer and grease out, but if you want that, you can go to the Corner Bar.

Instead, Republic is a venue for a wide variety of delicious beer and affordable contemporary American cuisine. The entrees are surprisingly low-priced, and the beer prices are on par with everywhere else in the city. But Republic offers over 30 taps from which to choose, and with a room devoted solely to live music, it can cater to more than just one demographic.

Nice job!
Adam Krumwiede
Excellent, with minor caveats. First reviewer thinks the Corner Bar is excellent, so take that with a grain of salt, yes?

Perhaps the reason places like Bullwinkle's are closing is because demographics and tastes shift. Well, Republic offers something different and good.

Pub food doesn't have to be greasy and nasty. I think it's great you can get chef-created cuisine for below $10 (and the portions are the right size.) Comparable eats elsewhere - like, say, a heap of overcooked cheese curds - go for the same price and provide little but a buffer for a frat-boy sized hangover.

Here, you can get a potato and root vegetable hash with poached eggs and chimichurri atop it for $8. Now that's upright living.

Bell's Two Hearted is always $4. That's pretty much the best price in town. If you don't like good beer, don't go here; Hamm's is available for $2, though.

Two Brothers' Cane and Ebel is also always on tap for $5. A deal.

Servers are just fine, and some had the 'new restaurant/pub' shakes, but I'm sure that'll go away.

If you're not still stuck in a 20-year-old mentality of 'blacking out is the only way to enjoy myself', this place is great.

Except for the no-smoking-on-the-patio rule, which is ridiculously stupid.
Kelly
This isn't your target market Republic. Only micro-brews AKA expensive beer. Limited expensive menu. Has an older crowd and hipsters there (and let's just say hipsters REALLY kill the mood with their pretentious attitude). Bad, bad move for Republic since this is where the Zombie Pub Crawl goes through and where college students live. I was incredibly disappointed when I went because our server didn't know what he was doing (brought us the wrong beers 2 times wtf?) and my sandwich wasn't worth the price. my friends and I will not be returning here again.

This place is great for those who like to spend money for a place that's only open 4-1am, can't smoke on the patio, doesn't appeal to the college kids who LIVE here, and sits on their high horse barking that they know what this area is. Get over yourself.

PS-THIS IS NOT PUB FOOD!!!!
The Minnesota Skinny
No candy coating, no chicken-fried breading, no blanket of pepper, just bacon and it rocked my world thoroughly.

Each room is decorated in rich reds and exposed bricks. The lighting was initially bright, but was dimmed around six to create a moodier tone.

Service
Actually, amazing?! Attentive, almost to a fault.
Patrick Vesperman
The Republic, with its clever logo design to highlight that it is a “pub”, is a fabulous place located at 7 Corners in Minneapolis just off highway 35W. I discovered it on one of my pre-class dinners. My friend and I would meet regularly for dinner prior to my evening classes and after his day classes. The burger I had made such an impression that I knew I had to bring Molly to try
