Review Roake's - Milwaukie

Just a good old fashioned Burger/Hot dog place. Not a lot of inside seating but love the atmosphere of the little diner. The burger was good. I put it right up there with a 5 guys style. I think Roakes could be a top tier burger with two changes. Toast the bun. Give it some texture and help it from getting soggy. (My biggest complaints about 5 Guys.)Then a little burger seasoning (SPG) would just put this burger over the top. Loved the fries. Thin crispy fires.

Good old fashioned Hamburger joint. In one word - Satisfying!! Excellent and fast customer service. Small sitting areas inside and some sitting area outside. There is plenty of parking around.

Roakes is the best place for best fries and burgers. My dad and I went for their deluxe bacon and little john burgers. They are so delicious and taste very healthy, It is expensive though but the fries as well are to die for. I would say that you should visit this place before it gets too crowded at night. Otherwise you will be disappointed and the parking lot can be a little hectic too, But other then that nothing can stop Roakes, They also have an 80s interior inside if you go there as well. Went inside one time and it was an awesome experience. The staff I talked to here were also very friendly and told me that it was built in the early 50s, Would recommend to anyone who lives close by in the Milwaukie area to check it out😂

I am so thankful for every burger stand I see. In a world that changes so rapidly, it’s nice to be reminded of a time before ordering kiosks and backed up drive thru lines. Roake’s is a step back in time, if not several. The dining area is decorated in classic diner decor. They get an A+ from me on aesthetics alone, however you won’t be disappointed in the food. The portions are large, the ingredients are fresh, and everything is made to order. Honestly, I can’t say enough good things about this place.

Honestly surprised. I've driven past this place for years and never thought to actually try it. Today I did. The lot was empty, which it rarely is. I got the deluxe burger, no ketchup, regular fries, side of spread. Turns out their spread is tartar sauce. But you know what? It works. The price was $10, $12 with tip. The order didn't come out quickly but the wait wasn't unreasonable. I waited in the shade on one of the many picnic tables available by the walking trail. The burger was good. Was it cooked amazingly char broiled with a slightly pink center? No. But it was a solid burger, on par with Mike's. The fries were a good portion, though a bit floppy for my taste, but they were great dipped into the spread. I get why it's an ol' reliable. I'd be back.

Best hotdogs in PDX! I recommend the Coney Fries 🍟🧀 I consider myself a hotdog connoisseur, and this joint is definitely the local 'weiner' in my book 😅🥇🌭🧀🌭 I kid- they really are the best! Franks a lot, Roakes 🤓

Absolutely worth the short trip outside of Portland. Delicious, inexpensive food done right. This spot has a great history and is a long standing institution. Nostalgic, fun, family friendly, hot dogs and burgers with coney sauce that is impeccably good - simple yet decadent.

first time here, workers here were nice enough, but the layout is sort of confusing. theres a walk up window facing 1 of the 2 parking lots but apparently youre meant to go inside to order. theres also a back door thats also an entrance to the "lobby" but doesnt look like one. theres a vague menu outside but inside theres the same menu with added details under each item. i got a burger + fries. the food was ready a little faster than i expected, seems like they put forward an effort. the burger was very moist, the bun started getting soggy before i was half done, it did taste good though. the fries were really thin, & i think unseasoned. id recommend chopping the fries a little thicker so they have some body, some fluff on the inside to contrast a crispy exterior. dunno if they chop their own or if theyre frozen prechopped. as far as the sogginess, maybe its the patty leaking juices, maybe its the lettuce washed too recently or the tomato condensation if they keep those chilled, or wet pickle chips? maybe all? it was $11.75 for reg burger small fries & med drink. pretty competitive pricing i guess, dont feel ripped off but dont feel like its an amazing deal either. anyway, standards are low around this part of town so not bad considering. id come back. edit: been back since, the long dog was smaller than i expected, sharpie for comparison in the photo, but it tasted decent. i probably would get the sausage dog, but idk if i want to spend almost $7 for a hotdog. the regular hot dog was the same price as the burger, but oz for oz i think you get more with the burger. if im in the area again ill probably come back.

This is an old school, vintage establishment. Food is amazing! Not sure what's in that onion sauce they put on their hot dogs but it's amazing! I always come in thinking I'll eat just one and end up eating three at least, simply can't stop. The burgers are next level too!

It tasted good. I enjoyed it forsure but nothing particularly special from the atmosphere to the food. The plus is this place won’t break the bank. I did appreciate how my veggie patty was nice and crunchy but not too much where it’s like dry. But not too soggy. Would recommend the veggie burger if that’s your kind of thing.

The service is wonderful! The burger was delicious, they used good lettuce and sliced onions.. that just really makes a burger for me, and I know food and service trust me! The fries were absolutely delicious. They weren’t soggy or sopping wet with oil like other places. I will be a return customer!

Tiny place, same as when I was a little kid, im now 63yrs old. But odd I got my fries first. Had to wait for my dog. I dont know why. I like to dip my fries in the coney sauce on my dog. But fries were half gone when my dog arrived . 🥴

You got to love this place for a dam good hot dog. I've been going there for over 45 years now and there coney island sauce taste the same. The owner is a sweetie♥️ talked to her the other day and she said her age and I told her she looks GREAT. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER.🥰🥰 Keep doing the great work.

I've been coming here since I was in my 20s. I'm now in my 60s. I love there long coney dog and the French fries. They are made fresh and by hand.

Perfect place for late night hot dog. Walk up window and has a little dining room also. Good dogs with snap. Look for the glowing neon wiener dog on the roof and you will know it's the right place.

We were loyal customers.... Once in awhile the places you enjoy eating at have bad days - after all we're all human, however after 3 disappointing meals in a row, there must be something going on. Skimping on the wonderful coney sauce is NOT a good thing. We are not sure what's going on with the fries but they taste like what some cheap drive thru would serve up instead of the tasty morsels we've loved for so many years. And on our last visit we asked for some salt packets and it took 3 times for them to quit giving us pepper packets...is no one paying attention? We miss the great food we USED to get there.

Horrible Coneys. We have been going to Roakes for over forty + years. The last two times have been mininmal in their sauce & bun. This last time was on 8-30-14 it was terrible. We got 3 coneys....the buns were dry & burnt , the sauce, well they only had about a Tablespoon if that, the hotdog didn't look like it had been cooked long enough, Needless to say, we will not be coming back. Word of mouth will go quite a ways. Didn't get a hold of the management.....we're told we just take orders and hung up on us. Pete Garner

We realized this when we got home to eat them. :(

Had my first experience last night at this amazing hot dog establishment and I must say their hot dogs are fresh and onions are still crisp I'm very impressed. What was even better was how clean the place was of course it needed some replacements but still was super clean

Fun Place To Go. Best "Dogs" in town. I love the old fashion burger and the berry shake.

The Sauce is the Boss. After a narrow escape from Lew's me and the misses dropped by here to satisfy our Coney Dog craving. We each ordered a long coney dog with cheese and split an order of fries. The coney sauce here is of the smooth, creamy variety that originated in Detroit, MI., which is one of the two kinds I remember from growing up. Anyhow, it worked its magic. As Reliable Rob said in his review, if you have no illusions about what is coming and simply revel in the decadent delight of the moment, then life shall indeed, strike you as good.
Turns out these guys cut their own fries and they are indeed, a standout. If I drop by again somewhere down the road I would probably cut the dog loose and just get an order of fries with that thick coney sauce and cheese draped over them.
Reliable Rob
Flashback city, man.... Used to eat here weekly in the 80's. so when driving by I had to stop for a coney dog even though I knew it would have a price beyond the cash one.
Nothing has changed in 30 or so years! And that is a good thing.
A grilled dog on a fluffy fresh bun slathered in an honest authentic coney sauce, draped in melting cheddar? Heaven on a bun son.

My wife was hungry for a coney dog. Read a lot of good reviews about this and decided to take 30 minute drive to check it out. Big mistake. Bad bad food.

We drive 50 miles to get a hamburger or coney dog the fries are to die for.

So many memories. We always go to roaches after going snowboarding. Delicious. Always craving their chili fries. Yum!

Some of the best, fresh cooked burgers and fries you will find in PDX. I'm always on the lookout for a burger that can rival Frisko Freeze in Tacoma and Roake's comes very close. They have some killer coney dogs with REAL Coney sauce - a pleasant surprise in the PNW. This also seems to be a great place to ogle cars and bikes, as there's usually at least one bad ass ride of some sort in the parking lot.
