Review Elephant Cafe - Milwaukee

As a Laotian, this is a home run to tasting like authentic homemade Thai-Lao food. Great tasting dishes and great portion sizes!

Delicious food, great lunch special. Unfortunately the bathroom wasn't clean, so I couldn't give it 5 stars

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Milwaukee. The curries are excellent, the noodle dishes are delicious and huge, the volcano plates (especially the tofu, surprisingly) is great, the larb is fantastic, and the Thai iced tea and coffee always make an excellent addition. The plum wine is super if you like very sweet options. All for reasonable prices and generous portions. They also went above and beyond to help out a customer who had car trouble. A+ all around.

The food was amazing, I was going to explode but I really wanted more because it was so delicious, which means they did a good job. Any time you can fool my brain into defeating my stomach you are delicious. The shrimp ginger curry is great the red curry is great the apps are awesome. Just go here and give a big tip to the staff because they rock, especially Judy, she's the best.

Comfortable Thai restaurant that serves way more than one person should be able to eat. Great variety to eat from their menu, and whatever is ordered comes out pretty quickly, too. My wife and I enjoyed dining here on a weeknight and had no troubles with sound, quality of food, or service. Waitstaff was nice, the decorations were a lot of fun, and the prices were just right.

Phenomenal Thai food. This was the first place I ever had real Thai food. They rate their spices on a 1-4 scale. I love spicy food, so I thought a 3 would be nothing. Oh boy was I wrong. My face was burning with each delicious bite. 10/10 would burn face again

I wasn't sure what to expect when we ordered "Shumai", but it was fantastic. About the size and shape of meatballs. Great texture and flavor. Also ordered Pad Thai at spice level 3. I think I can tolerate spicy heat, so this was pushing my limit. All around great experience.

Been coming here for a few years and really love this place!!!! I definitely crave their food on a daily basis. My favorite has to be the thom kha soup and Thai iced tea. I almost always get curry with noodles. Watch out - can get spicy, and parking is really bad, also sometimes they’re randomly closed

I could eat Thai food every day. It's my favorite. However, I have worn out my Thai welcome with my husband. For this reason, I have good girlfriends who will go with me instead. So imagine my surprise Sunday evening when Dan said he was so hungry he could eat anything. Anything?! Being the good wife I am, I took advantage of his vulnerable state and quickly sped to Elephant Cafe. The place is pretty cute and I love their elephant logo. We were greeted right away and could choose a table where ever we'd like. The food was great. Good crab rangoon. Good size wontons, good proportion of filling and I could see nice big pieces of the crab (maybe fake? I don't care). I'm SO, SO glad I have a go-to again for volcano tofu. My favorite was at Thai Palace (R.I.P.) and since they've closed I have missed it. Well, I like this version even better. Instead of just cabbage and carrots they have also added onions and broccoli to that party. But the real star is the tofu. Light crispy outside and really pleasant inside texture. I love this. I love their tofu preparation even better than Thai Palace, King and I, and the Vietnamese place, Hue. I asked for a spice level of 3 = medium. At other Thai places, I always ask for medium and I usually get something pretty mild. At this place, they were serious about the medium and it was fiery in my mouth. Yikes! But in a good way! Next time I might get a 2 or get a 3 but have a milk based drink instead of just water. Volcano tofu is the kind of thing I wish I could get as takeout but I'm a little skeptical of it. I worry that you get a container of sauce and a separate container of the tofu and veggies. The special thing about this dish is how the sauce sizzles in the cast iron dish and wilts and sears those veggies down a bit. But when I get a craving for it, I'll ask how they do it or just dine in. The ambiance is nice, if a little bright. Dan liked his duck curry. We had to flag the server down for a sharp knife though because there were huge chunks of it. His Thai iced coffee was also delicious. Overall we had pretty slow service. Our server took a while to take our order and an even longer time to get us all settled up at the end of the meal. There was no check-in to see how things were. It was 20 minutes from finishing before we were able to leave. Our server brought to-go containers but I had to ask for a bag when she came around again. I could see if we had one or two to-go containers but we had 3? The place was pretty busy on this Sunday night and there were just two servers for the whole place. I hope next time is better.

This is a gem of a place. If you like Thai you will leave loving Thai food. The Penang Curry is the best I’ve had in Mke. The spring rolls are the best and the prices are crazy good. Portion size is awesome. I can’t wait to take more friends there.

Elephant Café is probably my favorite Thai restaurant in Milwaukee. The food is good, and most meals are a good value for the cost and portion. The service is friendly but can be a little slow. The location is great for us as we live walking distance, however street parking in the area can sometimes be an issue. I usually order the curry (green, yellow or ginger) with tofu from Elephant Café. The tofu is excellent, especially in the curry sauce. Other favorites of ours have been the spring rolls, Crying Tiger, and the Black Pepper Pork Chops. Most meals are enough food for two portions (leftovers the next day!). We’ve tried the spice level from 1 (flavorful but not super spicy) to 3 (pretty darn spicy but not overwhelming). My only complaint has been inconsistencies with ordering take-out. We have received the wrong dish (something completely different from what was ordered) and not discovered until getting home. More recently, we did the Black Pepper Pork Chops only to come home with one pork chop (the order is two), so that was disappointing. Especially when you get home and aren’t able to return. All-in-all, Elephant Café serves up some delicious Thai food at reasonable prices. I would recommend checking it out, but I would consider ordering to dine-in or at least peeking at your food before you leave.

Best Thai food in Milwaukee! Cozy place with authentic Thai cuisine. Spice level is on a 1-5 scale but if you're feeling brave you can go even hotter.

Best asian food I have ever had, by far. I decided to try Elephant Cafe due to my girlfriend's friend request and I was not disappointed. This is the second time I have had thai food and the other time was at "The Taste of Madison" so I guess I cannot compare basically a food truck to a restaurant. I decided to come to this spot around 6:00 on a cold Wisconsin Sunday night with my mom and girlfriend. The place wasn't busy at all, which concerned us a bit since it was dinner time on the weekend with no Packer game. The staff greeted us with a smile, and we felt at home . The decorations weren't the typical asian everywhere in your face decor which was nice. Very casual but a nice feel. Prices are very good for the amount of food you get. Fresh ingredients were obviously used. I also really like how they give you a spicy rating system 1-5 which is unique. 1. Mee-Heng - OMG . The perfect combination of noodles, chicken, AMAZING sweet chili sauce, and a great addition of ground peanuts. This was seriously the best asian dish I have ever had in my life. The portion sized was also generous. I am not a small person to say the least and this filled me up nicely. You know how you get that kinda gross feeling after eating Chinese food? Never got a hint of that. I WILL be back and their is a good chance I will get this again. I ordered the 2 spiciness level. 2. Oyster Sauce Delight - If you're looking for a perfect serving of veggies with white rice and delicious oyster sauce, Oyster Sauce Delight is your go-to. This was also my girlfriend's first time trying Thai food in a restaurant. She said she loved it so much she wants to come back for more AND crab rangoons. Ordered the 1 spiciness level. 3. Pork Egg Rolls - Unlike other restaurants that use packaged frozen egg rolls, Elephant Cafe does not. These outside of the roll is a flaky wonderful texture that wasn't too hard or too soft. The plum sauce was really really good. Had a bit of spiciness end too it that made it different than other sauces. They served us three of them at only 3.75. Just a really good appetizer at a great price. Elephant Cafe is a perfect place for a first date, family gathering, or just a night out with some friends. Really friendly staff who are willing to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have. Definitely a great Thai food joint that I will be back to numerous times.

Don’t underestimate this place for great food. Respect the level of hotness you ask for or get a lot of ice water and napkins for your forehead. Excellent

Best Thai-Lao food in the midwest! I have tried different thai-lao cuisines from North Dakota to Chicago and Elephant Cafe is still the best food out there!

Easily my favorite Thai (and Lao) food in Milwaukee. Before Elephant Cafe opened, the associated E.E. Sane was my favorite, but Elephant has been consistently superior in my experience and has a number of novel dishes I prefer, the ginger curry being my favorite. The tom kha is another highlight. Placing to-go orders can be hit-or-miss, as they are occasionally understaffed when busy, but it's well worth the wait, and I've never had an issue with sit-down dining. Prices are fair, ingredients are fresh, and the ambiance is well-appointed but not overly formal, good for everything from meeting a friend to a business lunch to a date night. This is one of my top restaurants in the city.
