Review Real Chili - Milwaukee

Aaron O'Reilly
Being a native Milwaukeean, I can't imagine how I had missed ever going to Real Chili. This week's Sunday adventure with my dad took us to downtown Milwaukee, to Real Chili. An old school, sit at the counter, diner that serves primarily chili, of course, but also has some other items. Dad and I each had a chili dog with cheese. The poppy seed bun was steamed and a good sized beef dog covered in mild chili. If you like chili dogs I highly recommend this one!! We also each had a bowl of chili with spaghetti noodles and beans. Dad had the hot and I had the medium. Neither was too hot by any standard. Great Smoky chili flavor and filling to boot. If you want to eat at a real Milwaukee historical restaurant...Real Chili is the place to go. In the heart of the Marquette University campus. Great food and great atmosphere! Our service today was A number one as well! Thank you for a great time and a great meal;

I ate at Real Chili for the first time last week. This restaurant, running since 1931, is a Midwestern Gem. Housed in a lovingly maintained old fashioned diner with a wrap around counter, Real Chili specializes in one dish - house recipe chili - and it's real. It is real hearty, real well priced, and real good. Real Chili has a thick, well flavoured meat based chili. (There is also a vegan chili on offer) There are three pots of it, with three levels of spiciness. You can get a bowl with your choice of toppings, put it on spaghetti, or do a chili dog, Dorito pie or chili nachos. I recommend topping anything you get with their freshly grated WI cheddar. They have dessert, but I ate too much Chili to be able to fit any. I'm not sorry about that. If you come in during manger Brian's shift, you are sure to be treated to true Midwestern hospitality. His pride in the business shows with the care he puts into everything, from making the food to welcoming the diners. He's also a great conversationalist, so if you enjoy a chat, say hi. :) Real Chili is open late, and is perfect for midnight cravings, but I recommend coming in on a quite afternoon and taking time to enjoy the ambience. I came in last week to find some lunch after a very long day, and Real Chili was exactly the comfort I needed. Come and support this living piece of Milwaukee history!

Service was amazing. We had a huge order for 3rd of July fireworks. It's tradition but the one we go to closed due to new hours change. She handled everything smoothly alone and ready to close! This place is far cleaner than our normal go to, at least when she was working. I wish I remembered her name so I could commend her here. If you know who worked around 8pm on July 2nd, she's the one!

"Real Chili, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy taste." As one enters through the glass encased doors that shield the bubbling pots of truly authentic chili from the elements of the natural world one enters a world of flavor and class unbeknownst to the world at large. I walk the path towards redemption and hope, pray, that i will not be stricken down by our lord before i enter into this womb of eternal flavor. I reach the second gate and my hand stretches forward. With a slight push, i have arrived. "O say can you taste, by the dawns early light. What so proudly we hailed, at the twilights last gleaming." The establishment is encased by warm red walls with crisp black stripes. The coat hooks on the walls truly provide a sense of home for all who enter. The U shaped counters center the patrons on what is truly important; the real, authentic, actual, legitimate, indubitable, tangible chili. The ambience is truly majestic and leaves one feeling more patriotic, more in touch with ones self, more holy. "E=MChili." What is the mark of a fine establishment? The food. The glorious food! In the round vessel in which thine glorious chili is delivered, the noodles fill the bottom with a perfectly circular serving of the finest meats on top. Add in the fix-ins and mix well and thy taste buds will truly be blown away. As the Vatican has enlightened, "A chili full of flavor is a chili full of joy." After the bowl is empty thine stomach aches. Aching not only in digestion but in sadness and desire for yet another bowl. Thusly, the lord has blessed us all with the freedom to purchase another and another and another. Amen

Real Chili's has some Good Food. I have been eating there for over 20 Years. I miss The Warrior Challenge. I recommend The Chili with Spaghetti, Beans, and Meat. The Marquette Special is Good too. The Chili with just Meat is Good too. Unfortunately the price has gone up. I remember when it was $ 4.75 for a bowl of Mild Chili. Now it is $ 9.00. The sides went from $ 0.75 each to $ 1.00 each

Always delicious. Never any wait. I usually order in person for carry-out. Sometimes they don't answer the phone.

A classic Milwaukee staple. One of the few things left on Marquette’s now generic campus that has any history/charm.

There is no other place in the world like Real Chili. The Chili is out of this world, none better.

Our Family has been eating here for Years. Our Family has been eating here for over 30 Years. They have great chili. It is great to stop in here before or after a Milwaukee Admirals Hockey Game. They are a Old fashioned restaurant with counter top seating. I remember Years ago when they used to be a cash only place. They accept credit cards and debit cards now too. They have really Good food

Real Chili is a Marquette tradition. I give it a 4 for food and a 4 for atmosphere, but you need to know what to expect for those ratings to make sense. Atmosphere: There is a U-shaped counter, with the chili fixings and cash register in the middle. Nothing fancy at all, but it's a very social atmosphere with those sitting around you. Everyone was friendly (employees and other customers). They have newspapers to read if you want. Food:. They have chili, chili dogs, chili tacos and not much else. The secret ingredient in all is the meat, and what a combination of beef and spices it is. Chili can include spaghetti and/or beans and then the meat. You can get mild, medium or hot, the only difference being the amount of meat they put in, all the same meat though. I've tried to duplicate the recipe to no avail, so I will continue to visit whenever I'm downtown Milwaukee.

Milwaukee staple, always good. Excellent service

The chili is phenomenal. However, they’ve raised the prices for the sides (cheese, onions, sour cream, etc.) to $1.00 each, which is kind of nuts for a tiny cup.

Real Chili is real awesome! Been going here for a few years now. I take everyone there whenever we get close. The Chili is amazing and such a good deal. The staff is always friendly and fun to chat with. Even when it's late at night and they are working hard serving the late night rush. We love to eat at the counter. And always take extra to go so you have it for the next day. Get the hot chili with all the fixings. You will not be sorry.
