Review Huey's Poplar - Memphis

Great atmosphere, great service, and very good food. I think the prices are right where they need to be, and the selection of burgers is perfect for what it needs to be. I love that they're open later than most places, and they were packed on a Thursday evening.

Great experience . Loved the decor, the service was good and the food was great. The only bad thing was the fries were cold. The server was really really great though. He knew exactly when to come to the table and when to stay away. I didn’t get his name but he had dark hair and tattoos

The food quality here is pretty average, with a decent pub fare menu mix and bar. Only saw one local beer on tap. They had half the restaurant sectioned off so seating was super tight. My husband and I came here for a quick lunch and there was only one waitress working the entire restaurant. She was as attentive as she could be with the tight crowd, but our apps sat for a while and were lukewarm when we got them. The entrees were decent, nothing great. Super busy parking lot, but overall not an unpleasant experience!

Definitely a local favorite. I go for the burgers, especially the Bluff City burger, wings and steak sandwich. The black bean patty is great if you don't eat meat, or even if you do. They are known for letting people write on the walls, the ones they can repaint, so bring a sharpie, and some friends.

Did take out 2x here and the food was really good. Had a burger and cheese steak. So being from Philly and ordering a Philly cheese steak I am always laughing when I see onions, peppers and mushrooms on the sandwich. Well not here it was only grilled onion like in Philly, and it was good and definitely should be called a Philly cheese steak. The burger was good also, juicy hot and made just right. Good place for a bite if you're looking for one.

It's was packed but they made space for us. We had good food. Good atmosphere though a bit loud it still worked for our group. Waitstaff was en pointe. Prices were reasonable for portion sizes. Food came out quick.

My son went to hang out with his coworkers yesterday after work. We drove to meet up and ended up deciding to dine-in ourselves. Typically I am a picky eater for many reasons: what to eat, where to eat, and the presentation of my food - looks and size wise. I was going to order a sandwich, but decided to stick with what I know so I wouldn't be disappointed. The restaurant was packed out which lets you know it isn't a bad place to patronize. My dinner companions enjoyed their food while I sat there staring at mine. Once our waiter came to check on us, I addressed my concerns with my meal. Although, I can be picky about my food, our waiter even addressed his own shared opinion as myself. He stated that their fish is weighed, but that mine were small. Needless to say I sent it back and did not order anything else. I just sat there enjoying my family's company and drinking my unsweetened Arnold Palmer. I was told to find an alternative meal somewhere else by my spouse prior to going home. However, I ended up going home and eating reheated chicken wings and making a pot of rice and green beans. I hold no ill feelings toward this establishment and will definitely return. I just needed to shed light on my meal choice. #memphisfoodblogger #catfishbasket

A few of us who went to grade school together met up there and really enjoyed ourself. The band was great and just loud enough that we could talk.

It may have been the excellently prepared Tennessee Tea, but this was the best, abosolute greatest Madison Burger I have ever had. The Sweet Potato waffle fries and included dipping sauces were a great compliment. Table service was superb, not just for me but for everyone on this whole side of the diner. These girls know how to do their thing! So good, I may even come back tomorrow.

We had the BEST experience at Huey’s. From the moment we walked in until we left, I couldn’t imagine it being any better! We weren’t terribly hungry, but wanted a decent snacking lunch. We started off with delicious cheese dip and potato soup, which were both FANTASTIC! No one in the world beats the onion rings, though!!! PERFECTION!!

Oh, my. Wow. You should have seen my 18 year old daughter trying everyone’s food and saying, “oh, I wish I had gotten that... I wish I had gotten that... oh I wish I had gotten that!” It was all good. Even my wife thought her hamburger was one of the best she has eaten in a long while (except when I break open the grill at home, of course). Very attentive wait staff. Covid was a boomer... that all 8 of us couldn’t sit at the same table, but that is the times we live in. Great place, highly recommend!

Great burger place in Memphis! I have been to multiple locations of Huey’s and never been disappointed. They have lot of options for burgers. You can convert any burger to vegan, vegetarian or Turkey option. I like their Chicken cheese Philly Sandwich, deluxe grilled chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries. They have recently introduced Beyond Burger (vegan), which is totally scrumptious! Their entire menu is worth trying!! Don’t forget to try their cheese tots and grilled salmon plate! Only thing I was disappointed was with the Shrimp basket - it had less shrimp and more of potato fries. They even have live music on some of the Sundays. The most important thing I like about Huey’s is that they are open late night and they do timely service. Totally a good place to hangout with friends!

Huey's has always had great burgers to me in the past and still are great. Always had great service at all their locations. Never disappointed with anything they dish up. Happy hour drinks are great too.

Truly a Memphis classic. I've been going to this location for years, and there's a good reason there's sometimes a wait. However, in the middle of the day when I go for lunch, there's always a table and smiling person to seat me and take my order. While any of the burgers is excellent, the salmon and veggie plate (while a little pricey) is very good (and pretty good for you).

They were friendly, professional, and got my food quickly. Huey’s always knocks it out of the park. Reliable and delicious.

So I was told this place had the best burgers in town so I tried it out….😋😋but the fried shrimp was calling my name 🤣I would definitely refer Hueys to my clients. As a 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 I love researching different restaurants so that I can suggest different options for my clients.

It’s ok. Service was slow and not very attentive. Burgers are good and the menu has lots of choices. May go back in few years and see if it has improved just not interested in $35 bill for two adults and child that was eating just burgers.

I would go here all the time after I finished my morning classes at the U of M. Service is always fast and the food is always good. They serve the cheesiest cheese fries I've ever had. Great place to get away from the stress of college.

Not at all impressed. It was given as a suggestion as a late night spot to eat during the week. While the specialty drinks were good the burgers left nothing to be desired. As an out of towner I won't make this a recommendation to anyway.

The burgers are to die for! Had an absolutely great experience! I'm from out of town and thought Huey's would be a good place to grab some lunch. The burgers were flavorful, the fries were crispy on the outside, but moist on the inside, and the sauces were fantastic. It was so nice to taste flavor; everything else I've had around here is either bland or soaked in sauce to make up for it. But the meal I had (slider trio) was excellent without sauce, and got even better with! My waiter and host were excellent, too. The host recommended a beer for me which I loved, and the waiter was very quick, but not poushy.

10/10 (or 5/5, I suppose), will be back again!

Taken for a ride.... Let me start by saying that I have frequented Huey's for over 20 years. After my last couple of experiences, I will not return. The most recent experience was this week. I took my 8 year old son, my nephew (also 8) and my 12 year old to Huey's on Poplar for lunch. Our server, Whit, greeted us promptly and took our order. I ordered for the boys while looking at the kids' menu. I destinctly remember saying I needed 2 kids' burgers, both without anything on them with fries. My older daughter ordered for herself and requested the same. The food came after a long, long while. I assumed this was because they were busy & did not complain. Needless to say, by the time the food came, we ate it without hesitation. Then Whit drops off the bill...WOW! I was completely shocked. The burgers the kids ordered were rung in as adult burgers $6.15 each and $2.15 each for the fries. A big surprise from the $4.50 listed for a burger including fries on the kids' menu. I brought it to Whit's attention immediately. Assuming he was busy and had made a mistake. He argued with me that I did not ask for kids' meals. I asked him why he rang in a kids' meal for my daughter, but not the youngest kids at the table? I certainly did not request adult burgers! By that time, the front of the house manager, Ed, came to the table to check on us. I told him that Whit overcharged us. Whit's response to my complaint in front of his manager, "they already ate the meals, they should pay for them." Ed the manager handled it by shrugging his shoulders and walking off. Boy, was that an expensive lesson. I should have know better when just 2 weeks before my friends and I spent close to $145.00 on drinks and appetizers and were charged $1.00 each for extra blue cheese. Is everything okay with Huey's on Poplar? Do they really need to nickel and dime their customers? Not to mention, what happened to customer service? I was not looking for a free meal, just a fair price. The price I had intended to pay when placing my order. Someone needs to look into what is happening at that location ASAP.

Awesome service! Great food! Fabulous atmosphere for a burger place! Local restaurants are the best.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! Serving staff gave us a general location of where they wanted us to sit, prices were outrageous for the amount of food you get, service was non-existant (never refilled our drinks), food took over an hour to arrive, and the server (Erin) had the audacity to flag us down as we were leaving to ask where her tip was. Never. Never. Never ever going to Huey's again...I advise you to do the same and avoid this place like the plague.

A good place to come for a couple beers, hear some music, and grab a burger. You can customize your burger to the ends of the earth should you wish. Service is kinda sucky, but it's really like a divey-almost-bar, so you get over it.
Smvest51
Poor service and food. While dining at Huey's on Poplar, my friend and I experienced poor service and poor food. There were few customers and yet we have to wait forever for our order and then it was cold and soggy. I will not eat there again.

Over and Over Again. As for me and my house -- Huey's is the best place for a good burger. I have never gone and was disappointed. Over and Over again it proves to be the best place for good food and good times. The cheese fries (rather than tell you about them) try them for yourself. Best ever!!!

Great place to eat!!! All the food is great!!!

Love it!. Such a fun atmosphere! The onion rings are huge and absolutely delicious, and the onion strings are to die for! Not from the Memphis area, but can't wait to eat at Huey's again!

Don't go when the geriatric band plays!. While they attract a lot of folks from, I guess the local nursing homes, it's loud and awful music lends to an awful experience at a progressively worsening experience at these restaurants.
Jason
Pretty average food. Not sure what all the hype is about. Pretty good atmosphere though.

Great fried pickles for an appetizer. Solid burger, fries, and potato skins.

I live in Bham, AL and my husband and I talk about driving to this place just to get the fried pickles! Best I've ever had! Great burger!

When visiting Memphis it is a necessity to come to hueys. And when coming to Huey's the only two things someone should think about getting are the bluff city burger and the sunny side up burger. They are hands down the best two items on the menu

Let me start by saying I love Huey's. To me there is no place better to eat a great burger! That being said, please take my advice and never ever try the salmon!! Due to dietary restrictions recently I did, and it was terrible! It honestly tasted like one of those frozen peices of salmon you can buy at the grocery store and put I the microwave. It was incredibly tough and several steps beyond dry. It was really bad! The waiter was concerned though and did take it off the bill (I only ate about three bites!!). They win for customer service, burgers and fried pickles, but lose badly for salmon!

U can't come to Memphis and not eat at Huey's. best burger place hands down

Consistently good burger and Reuben Not a fan of the soggy fries though. The atmosphere is always great at all locations. Always a late night choice on weekends too!

Good Steak, actually. This place is known for its burgers (which are good as long as you don't expect them to change your life), but the steak on a stick is surprisingly tender, juicy and delicious. The giant onion rings I love, though the breading is too thick--peel some of it away and...mmmmmm. Great atmosphere--shoot tooth picks into the ceiling or draw on the wall.

As usual Hueys burger is over rated, asked for Medium and it was not juicy and over cooked. Rest of the food is pretty good. Want a burger go to Belmont, Houstons or Alex's Tavern.

Good Beer Selection, Delicious Turkey Burgers, Affordable. Huey's is a great casual atmosphere with good bar food (expect to be satisfied but not necessarily blown away). The burgers are the best option on the menu -- particularly if you have them made as turkey burgers. The Madison Avenue Burger or the Smokey Melt are my favorite. The steak fries and onion rings are also good.

Huey's has a good beer selection with fair prices, but don't come here before 8 pm if you don't want to hang out with a bunch of children -- this is a big time family restaurant during peak hours, but it is open late for the adult crowd. Check out the original Huey's in Midtown or Huey's Collierville if you're in the suburbs. Huey's downtown makes a great lunch spot if you work in the area.

-----24 Dec, 2010-----

Turkey Burgers. All of Huey's great hamburgers can be made as turkey burgers upon request. The turkey burgers here are the best I've ever had. I like the Madison Avenue Burger, The Smokey Melt, and the original Huey Burger the most.

Love Huey's. Burgers and wraps are great... good atmosphere especially on live music nights.

BAD FRIES. Love the burgers......the fries are great when not undercooked-old-overcooked or soggy . DETAILS make or break the meal!
Jeremy
Had the catfish basket. It was great.

Another lunchtime fav. I think me and the guys from work ate at Huey's at least once a week while I was in Memphis. The only two locations I ate at were the one on Poplar and the one on Germantown Rd.

I always enjoyed the food and the service was always great--ask for Mandi J. if you go to the one on Poplar. Or, if she's tending the bar, then sit up there. :) Not that the rest of the staff is bad--Mandi just became our favorite as she always took great care of us and usually brought our regular drinks to us without our having to ask.

You gotta like the toothpicks. Who doesn't like the toothpicks in the ceiling? I dunno. I admit I like the Belmont burger better than the much-bally-hooed Huey burger. But my son prefers Hueys. So when we go here I get their spinach salad. Excellent. And they have that toothpick thing going.

Amazing burger (fresh ingredients carry the day here) and a music selection that had me shakeing my head in joy as each track unfolded.

Huey’s is a Memphis favorite. I know several people who claim Huey’s has the best burger in Memphis. Of Huey’s locations in the Memphis area and I’ve eaten at 3 of them. And I have to tell you… Huey’s isn’t my favorite. I don’t dislike it. Their food is good and the ambiance is fun, but it’s not even in the top 10 burger’s I’ve eaten.
The Organized Eater
Huey’s is a fun place to come to, and I’ve never had a bad experience. The service is always excellent, and the food has never disappointed. Perhaps the best part? That pick in your burger? Put it in your straw, aim at the ceiling, and blow!
I'm not sure how we decided on Huey's much less the one on Poplar rather than the one in Midtown, but that's where we ended up.
