Review The Green Beetle - Memphis

Freddi
The burger was really big, messy, and juicy! What more could you ask for? Maybe a little salt on the patty, but other than that, everything was really yummy. The tots were crispy on the outside and perfectly soft in the middle. We left stuffed and satisfied. I certainly highly recommend giving them a try.

This big willy chicken sandwich was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. On the Monday before fourth of July, we weren't certain that any venue would be open. My girlfriend had the mushroom Swiss burger and she could only eat a third of it. Big ol fried chicken breast dipped in a sweat heat concoction. Server was great as well.

Overall a great meal. My dad has been trying to get us to go for years, and we are glad we finally got to. Our server, Tasha did a great job anticipating our needs. It's a hot day, so she kept the drinks coming. We ordered the Cajun chicken tater tots first, and they were a taste explosion. The Fiesta salad was perfect for me and my husband loved his Sly burger. The egg was a perfect sunny side up. My daughter and father got burgers as well and loved them. The new chef is certainly on her game. Highly recommend, even if you are like us and don't drink.

Food, drinks and service were all very good. Pub grub. Highly recommend.

Cool bar with a lot of seating inside and an outdoor patio. Looks like a comfy pub with great drinks and large selection of beers, but it also has awesome food. The burger had a great meaty taste, and the fried catfish was perfect, crunchy and juicy at the same time. The grilled chicken was a surprise star. My MIL got a goat salad and added grilled chicken. It was delicious. Juicy with a great flavor. Def will go back next time I’m in Memphis.

It is beyond dangerous that I live within 5 miles of this place. I came here to celebrate my friends birthday a couple weeks ago and we couldn’t have had a better time or better food anywhere else in the city. The service was quick and very very hospitable. I don’t remember our servers name, unfortunately, but he was very funny and welcoming. THE. FOOD. THOUGH!!!! We got the Cajun chicken tater tots as an appetizer and i didn’t want to order a burger after trying them because I just wanted about 76 more orders of the tots!! The cheese was soooo good (and my husband is snobby about melted cheese and he had no complaints lol!), the chicken was divine, the tater tots brought tears to my eyes. After much deliberation, I didn’t end up ordering more of them as my meal, and I’m so glad I didn’t. I got the green beetle burger (without mustard) with tots, my husband got the bacon cheddar burger with fries, my friend got a quesadilla, and her husband got the pimento cheese burger. The burger was absolutely cooked in heaven…sooo melty (can meat be melty? Here it can!), well seasoned, the cheese was perfect, and all the fixings worked amazingly. Now the time for the age old question: fries or tots???? I was very on the fence (with indecision because they both looked sooo good), but after the appetizer I KNEW I had to get the tots. My husband got the fries. Both were amazing(!!!!), but I *slightly* preferred the tots (sorry, fries, you were beautiful too). Oh, and for my ranch family, the ranch was also good!! Everyone loved their dishes very, very much! I was able to get a picture of those marvelous Cajun chicken tater tots, but that was before I ate them. Once I ate them, I was in sort of a trance until my burger got there and didn’t take a picture because I no longer had the control to take one before I ate, knowing now what the food was going to taste like. So I just included a bonus picture of the stained glass window inside. I know, I apologize. Just go eat there. You’re welcome. Edit: added pics of the burgers and the new menu after going back the day after they reopened!

I really love to support local businesses. This restaurant was so quaint and the food was good. I had the catfish dinner dish, and we ate the chicken tots for the appetizer, really good!! Our server was so sweet too, I don't recall her name but she had long dread type braids with pink tips. :)

Food was great! The service was amazing! I'll definitely be coming back. If anyone is thinking about trying this place out don't hesitate. It's by far some of the best burgers I've had in the Memphis area.

Got the Goat burger takeout. Big juicy burger cooked medium with a touch of pink (how I like it) good amount of fries. I would go back and eat here again.

We walked in close to close and the server was kind when telling us the kitchen was close. She allowed me to use the restroom. I forgot my wallet there. By the time I realized it, they were actually close. We called over and over and someone picked up, checked, and allowed us to pick it up at open the next day. I was grateful.

Great Philly Cheesesteaks and the food is reasonably priced. I accidentally left my card overnight and was glad they asked for my ID before they'd return it to me. :)

First time eating here. Got a salad and our friends got a burger and the catfish. it was all delicious! The service was a little slow but the server had lots of tables. Great to see so many customers!

We stopped in for lunch. The husband got the rib sandwich special the oldest and I split the Big Willy. The big Willy was delicious. Pimiento cheese on a buffalo chicken sandwich? Ummm yes please. Try it you will be happy you did. We were very happy with our service. Great suggestions on local brews as well as things to do around town.

This is one of my favorite places to come and relax with a drink. If you go right before sunset and grab something, you can walk a few blocks to the riverfront and catch an awe inspiring sunset at one of the best parks looking over the river. This bar is great! The staff are always friendly and conversational. I’ve never eaten here but the food always smells so delicious and there are always a ton of people grabbing a bite so I might just stop over there today to try a burger! Definitely would recommend to a friend.

This place was a gem we just happened to find thanks to google. Their burnt ends salad was so good I’m still thinking about it days later. The price was great for the huge portion sizes. The interior is super cute and very clean. I would highly recommend spot for lunch to anyone.

Stopped by on my way to the train station Sunday afternoon. Really nice place to have a few beers and watch the Sunday football games! Great atmosphere and service!

My family and I had dinner here tonight and I must say that I wasn't ready for what was in store to say the least. One: it was a large group of us, eleven to be exact. Two: the food was amazing, everyone enjoyed their meals. Three: I didn't want to dine out but I took one for the team and they did not disappoint at all, nice portions, reasonable prices, and flavorful food. Great place to chill with a group or cozy up on a date! Thanks Green Beetle, we had a lovely time!

Hamburger was decent but the bun was too sweet... Updated:. Went for food and drinks. Got the Cajun chicken tater tots. They weren't bad but the look of them was not appealing. Drinks were decent. Service was great. Overall I had a good time.

Maybe the best 'dive' bar in Memphis (and I mean that with the utmost respect). Never had anything bad here. Decent craft beer selection. Daily lunch specials. The burger is a classic, but there's not much if anything here that you could go wrong with. Supposedly Memphis own Machine Gun Kelly shot the place up for grins before he was finally apprehended, but the damage long since covered. Whether true or not, it just adds to the great charm of the place. Always a welcoming place.

We have a new tradition where we find the oldest bar/pub in a town we are visiting. The Green Beetle was that in Memphis. We went on a Friday mid afternoon was welcomed the moment we walked in. Great atmosphere and great burgers. Thanks to Josh and his friendly staff for making us feel welcome. The regulars are a pretty good crowd also.

Been here off and on for years. Usually get a B.L.O, not B.L.T. Had the Ribeye for steak night. A bit thinly cut, but it was a good cut of meat and was cooked to a proper medium rare as I requested. Both the steak and potato were very tasty. Good price and efficient service.
Joseph Nicholas Foster
Great place to grab a beer and get some good food! The staff are friendly and inviting.
Stephanie Holder Potts
I’m seriously obsessed with this place. The build your own burger is my fave but there’s so many other things I’m trying soon.

My husband and I were visiting my BFF from New Orleans. We were in the mood for a hamburger and my friend recommended your place... we were very pleased. Not only was our burger awesome but they had the best Vodka & Cranberry drink. The staff was extremely friendly and we love the homey feeling that it gave us!! ❤️❤️❤️

Love everything I’ve tried here! Yummy and unique burgers. Great place to grab a bite before a show at the Orpheum.
Mike Holland
Great friendly place. Cold drinks and great food . Had the BELT sandwich( bacon egg lettuce and tomato ) . Loved it. Great Burgers , and chicken wings

Well, considering you made a mockery of "Black Lives Matter" on your advertising sign, You don't deserve a good rating. It is sad that such a treasured local restaurant allowed this type of inappropriate action to take place. Shame. I am very disappointed.

Really wanted to try this place. Went in and sat down, the waiter passed by me several times and never said a word! Three men came in and sat down. He went over to ask if they wanted something to drink. I'd been sitting there a good 8-10 mins. So, I left.
Megan Perry Klein
Hands down the best burger in Memphis and the place where everybody knows your name.

Love that a piece of Memphis history is still around! Excellent service and great food!
Christopher Howard Burbeck
It’s one of the few places that I can enjoy high quality food that is prepared to the highest standards by people who love what they do .
Matt Falco
I can so be a regular there. Everything was awesome from the philly steak fries and the blue cheede burger and local brew

OMG the brunch was amazing... I inhaled the catfish and grits! Can't wait to come back for dinner!

Great food and staff. Good beer selection. Owner is a Bears fan!
Traci Thearp
Energetic servers and bartender! Be sure to try their signature drink, the bushwacker!

Used to be great. We live close and have ordered frequently in the past. However, the last 3 times have been very disappointing. The burgers used to arrive perfectly cooked to order. Our last 3 orders, our medium burgers have arrived beyond well done. Once they had a large amount of black char. Tonight they were so dry we had trouble swallowing them. $14.00 for a burger is way too much to spend to have it burned beyond recognition. They must have a new cook or new management. Unfortunately tonight is the last straw.
Christine Lee
Great burgers and fries, serves hard cider and beer. Not an extensive menu but what they do, they do well. Accommodating to gluten-free, very friendly and helpful staff. I recommend the Bacon, black and Tiger blue burger.
Paige Hannah
Really good, juicy burger. My girlfriend's catfish wasn't that great though. Also they serve no liquor, only beer. Cool place to hang out and watch games.

Great food ... Horrible Service!. I have been to this establishment many times since 2010. The food selections vary which is good and the dishes I have ordered were pretty tasty (especially the catfish dinner). YET ... the service is horrible. No one speaks, no true hospitality, and it takes awhile if you dine in. I have heard many things about what it use to be and I hate I didn't get a chance to experience that energy. Maybe with a new "waiter/waitress" staff, this establishment would flourish. South Main is great ... get with the program Green Beetle!

Awesome food and service 2/2/15. We had The Green Beetle deliver food to our hotel room with my grandson was in Le Bonheur. We were tired and just wanted to stay in. We ordered steak and potato (Monday night) and an appetizer and it was fabulous. The food was so good but the service exceeded our expectation. They delivered everything we needed and more. Highly recommend this place.

Best burger in Memphis. I didn't have very high expectations since I had eaten at Huey's for lunch and thought their burgers couldn't be beat. I was very surprised and have found my new place for burgers! The bun was even to die for. The service was also excellent and the atmosphere very cool. I can't wait to go back!

Massive Burgers and big Beer selection. I like a good burger!

I really like a good burger on a fat bun.

A burger with a fat bun, and hash browns, and a fried egg on it? Yeah, that's one of the best things on the planet.

Now, price, not so much. I substituted sweat potatoe waffle fries and had a Red Bull to drink, $19.00, so after a tip I'm out $25 for the experience. Maybe it was that good, but it was Thursday night, so I also had to sit through Trivia.

I'll be thinking twice about my next visit, but not because of the food or service. Price and noise are the issues.

Place is old but clean, regulars and tourists are here. Blocks from National Civil Rights and MLK. Access from the trolly line too.

Local hangout. Admittedly, I only ever the grilled cheese...but it's a darn good grilled cheese! My husband generally like everything he orders, but his favorite is the meatball sandwich. Overall, the food is tasty, the staff is friendly and it's a nice laid-back place to hangout to watch a game or listen to live music.

Food blah. prices over and above for the quality.. I ordered the country fried steak, green beans, and mac and cheese. My friend ordered a three veggie plate. The presentation was okay, seeing all the items were in separate containers. The problems began from there though. The country fried steak was basically a prepared frozen steak I could buy from the grocery store. The vegetables were straight out of can. The only seasoning I could taste was pepper and that was only in the green beans. The mac and cheese left me wondering where was the cheese. I could see a few tiny strings of cheese, one spoon sized clump of cheddar, and lots of milk. It was not creamy and cheesy, as I would have expected. In addition, the place has been since 1939, it seems it doesn't live up to the hype. It seems to be more of a tourist trap than for locals who know good food.

My wife and I are in Memphis from Alaska and tried the green beetle last night. I had the best cheeseburger that I have ever eaten and my wife had an excellent catfish poboy. Let me tell you, you can't find food like this in Alaska and if I lived in Memphis I would probably eat here once a week. Two thumbs up!
JB
Best burger in town and they deliver! How can you go wrong? Plus great beer selection on tap.Hidden jewel downtown.

Excellent place for happy hour. I suggest the nachos as a starter when you place your order for one of the local brews on tap. I had the sausage with peppers po' boy and onion rings. If you like onion rings, you must get theirs! They were cooked perfectly with the beer batter crisp and the onions not overcooked.

Wow! We've been there a few times, but we just tried their burgers. The best burger in Memphis, without a doubt!
That Couple
Great place now. I went there in 98 i think to pay a bookie went i first to memphis. It was scary. But i went in a month ago and the grandson of the original owner took over. Its great. Cool place. A great mix of people. With the doors open and blues music playing. When that trolly dings by its a cool scene. Drink a beer and have the lasagna. And the wifey says mention the unbelievable cajun catfish. Go here. Great tavern with exceptionable southern cuisine.

The food is grate and everybody nice it's a good place to eat or just hang out and catch the game. I heard that American Golbal Cleaning is keeping the floors shining. I'm going back every chance I get hope to see you there!

Cool Pub, Great Food. The server was nice enough to earn a 10$ tip. I got the Beatle Burger with provolone. The bun was freshly made and although wheat, it had a hint of sweetness, I later found out that they actually bake the breading for the bun themselves. I would expect to pay twice as much for the burger elsewhere. It seemed to be a very large portion for the price tag 9$. It also came with french fries. I think the fries were better than the burger. They had put some seasoning on it that was .....great. Im looking forward to going back there and having other dishes. Keep up the great service and food!!!

Great day to be a Beetle. I stopped in to the Green Beetle for the 1st time the other day. The front opens up, huge open doors, so every seat feels like you are on the patio.
It was a cool day so it felt great. The menu was full of great sounding things. I chose the Italian sausage po boy. It had grilled peppers and onions. I smelt them cooking from the kitchens and it was great. The sandwich came with steak fries so I got a small cup of chili to go with that. The chili had a lot of beans so if beans are not your thing then you want enjoy it as much as I did. The Sandwich also had a little red sauce on the side with small chunks of meat. I added that on the Italian sausage.
The next time I am in I am going to try the meat ball sandwich because the red sauce was good. I don't know what the signature dish is but that was great.

Great Burger. If you like Hawaiian bread your in luck the burger is a good thick burger on a sweet bun with all the normal stuff. I liked the burger cant wait to eat another one good steak fries and the Mac n Cheese is awesome. Dont believe anybody that say's this burger suck's they can go back to eating fastfood chains....

Lots of Promise.... First the place is just simply cool. It feels like Memphis. We went for lunch hoping to get our pictures made with Jonathan, the chef just kicked off of Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen, but he only cooks at night. Their lunch menu included a 1 lb double patty burger, to about a half dozen salad selections. Most entrees were $10-12, so its not a cheap lunch. The portions are huge though. I had the cajun meatloaf, which was topped with Barbeque sauce. A bit ineptly named, as it was tasty but not a bit spicy at all. Very moist though. The horseradish mashed potatoes were very aptly named though--the first few bites were awesome, but they went a bit overboard on the horseraddish and it became old quick. The lima beans were obviously canned and a disapointment. The greens were the perfect combination of being tender while a bit crisp--obviously not canned. The chicken sandwich was immense--and the bun was wheat and tasted like fresh baked bread. Its very cool that all sandwiches can be served blackened also. Unfortunately, the chicken fried steak was mostly breading, was chewy and a bit bland. Overall though, considering its a new place, the food was very good. They are adding a new dinner menu when they get their liqour license soon...but now have the same menu (they have a great beer selection at reasonable prices now). OK...now to the service. . . the staff was very friendly, but 2 of our 3 entrees arrived a full 10 minutes before the 3rd lunch...and it was nearly that long after the first 2 lunches arrived that they brought silverware. We waited on unsweet tea the entire meal and they finally said that their machine was on the fritz. I had to ask 3 times to get lemon for my water, which finally arrived over 30 minutes after we got there. Probably a 20-25 minute wait from ordering to getting our food. Not a suitable work lunch spot if they don't fix that problem. They had a fried catfish special, but our waitress didn't tell us about it and it wasn't listed on the specials board. My daughter was bummed when the people next to us ordered it b/c that's what she wanted before we even went there! But, they brought us free peanut butter cupcakes as an apology for the service issues...so they are forgiven! The cupcakes had been stored in the fridge and so were a bit dry. They were however delicous, not too sweet or overpowering on the peanut butter taste. The final verdict is that I'll be back to try their new dinner menu and meet chef Jonathan.

Now you know, so now you can go.. It's a go go bar with a green upholstered door.
what do green beetles usually hover around? well at this place it's vice-versa like a kirk cameron/dudley moore flick.
pbr 24 oz available.
had a blast, danced my freakin pants off.
MacKenzie Stonis
Yuck.. Simply, you can get a less greasy meal from Burger King. Burger was dripping grease, fries were cold, and service was mediocre.

It will turn you GREEN. Last Friday night my son and I tried the Green Beetle before the Grizzles game. If you can somehow get past the fact that it's a dirty dive and sit yourself down for a meal you may find yourself alone as we were. The fact that we were the only one's eating should have told us something. It only went down hill from there. We ordered the "Beetle Legs" for an appetizer which came some time after our meal was served. We ordered fish, shrimp and fires for our meal. The only waitress set cross legged on the bar for 18 minutes and only went to check on our food after we asked about it. The ketchup was rancid so they had to run out to the store to buy some. All the fried food was cooked in oil that was way, way past its life expectancy. It totally ruined all the overcooked food. We paid over $40.00 for a meal that wasn't fit for a review. We truly thought we'd be "green" before the night was over. The moral of the story.... Its not the place to order dinner.
Alyssa Long
Sometimes on a Saturday night we like to do something low key. We found the perfect place for this: The Green Beetle . Located right on the trolley line, The Green Beetle is the oldest tavern in Memphis. It's a small little place just bursting with Memphis charm. Every Friday and Saturday night they have live music. The times we've been there we have absolutely loved the entertainment. I always say it's as if my Pandora station is playing live in front of me. The performers they have play acoustic covers of popular musicians like Johnny Cash, the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and plenty of classics. It's the perfect music to just sit back and listen to. For such a small place, their menu actually has a bunch of different options! We keep going back and ordering different things. We have yet to be disappointed. So far, my favorite thing is the buffalo chicken sandwich. I've also heard from a reliable source that their burgers are amazing. An extra bonus is that it's only about a five min
Seth
It was big and thoroughly seasoned. It was tender and juicy and the scoop of blue cheese on top of the patty melted perfectly into the meat, giving it such an amazing flavor.
Ken's Food Find
The Sausage and Pepper Po’ Boy sandwich was decent. The patty of Italian sausage had the flavor that most would expect, working well for the sandwich that I’m likely ordering again.
Holly Whitfield
The po-boy tastes great, but its size makes it a three-napkin sandwich. The potato salad was some of the best I’ve had in town
