Real score 4.5 out of 5.
We loved it here. The food’s great - some traditional, some modern, some unusual. The drinks are good. The fit out is terrific. Service is attentive and efficient, too. Everything works nicely which adds up to a tremendous experience overall.
Vietnamese food had become a bit the same to me. I’ve probably been to Victoria Street and like areas too much over the years and had not looked around enough. I’d also probably not looked beyond the usual standard dishes. It’s good to get out and see what else is out there because when you do you can find impressive and innovative new places like District Mot.
It’s a great street fit out. Lots of it was done or arranged by the owner Minh who went as far as retrieving bits of wood off the street for use in the design. It’s really clever and clearly took lots of thought and effort. Having been to Ho Chi Min City, I can confirm that the fit out looks like a scene from that city.
We went nuts over the prawn and taro spring rolls here. Thin spring rolls usually means less taste to me. All crunch, no filling. These here though were absolute beauties. They were beautifully cooked. So crispy! The crispness added to the delicate prawn flavour. The taro also makes them very smooth. The dipping sauce too was seriously good too. The rolls were also so delicious with the Vietnamese mint. Our only suggestion would be to provide a little more lettuce. We adored these spring rolls. And, the dipping sauce is possibly the best we’ve ever had. Genuinely delicious.
I had a beautiful creamy mango smoothie with my meal. This was very good too. The sweetness was held back in the drink. The focus as it should was on the beautiful mango and it made for an excellent drink.
The BBQ beef skewers were crackers too. Made with a lot of care and attention and they had great flavour. I really enjoyed the mini pancake as well but my partner thought they were a tiny bit short on flavour. The blood clam were chewy too with a strong taste and a beautiful nutty sauce. I’ve not had anything quite like them before and they went wonderfully with the fish sauce. I really enjoyed them.
The comfort food dish to finish was excellent. We chose the pork belly and egg clay pot which arrived hot and bubbling at the table. The pork was cooked excellently and was so tender and flavoursome. The egg was great too. This dish had such good flavour.
District Mot was a real surprise. It seeks to deliver a different Vietnamese experience compared with places around town that only deliver the standards. It succeeds in that very well and we really enjoyed our visit. Our suggestion would be to try some of the non standard dishes here as they were wonderful.
Thank you for inviting us in.

I would have given it 3 because of the service time but the quality and flavor of the soup made me give it a 4. Me and my friends were here for a quick and tasty lunch. It was tasty but it wasn't quick at all.
If you are walking around in the CBD (not around all the Vietnamese restaurants in Swanston street) then I think this place is a really good option to try Vietnamese food. They have a small menu, which makes choosing your dish very easy and simple. Price-wise they were alright, I used Zomato Gold so I got a complimentary dish which is always awesome.
First, lets talk about food. I got a Vermicelli Bowl with grilled Pork. Vermicelli was nice an warm and the pork was cooked very nicely as well. I love a bowl of vermicelli with fish sauce and meat and this one did not disappoint me at all. It had great flavors and I was completely satisfied after having it.
I also tried beef pho and I thought that the texture of the noodles and the flavors of the soup were spot on. I had such a flavourful pho after a long time.
Now the bad part, we went there on a Saturday and maybe they were short on staff on that day and we had to wait a really long time to get the food on our table. 2 of us had to get takeaway because by the time food was ready, it was time to go.
I would definitely recommend this place for a good Vietnamese meal but only if you have time to spare, but if you are in a hurry or going in for a quick lunch, you might want to skip this one.

I had small chicken pho with Vietnamese coffee today for 18$. The store ambience is creative and artistic, with open windows, pedestrian crossing painting and street painting on the wall. The chicken is tender and tasty, the soup taste light and lack of flavor. The Vietnamese mint and mung bean sprout is a little. The coffee is full of ice and less coffee. Overall is a little pricey and the pho is lack of taste.

First thought that came to my head was, "am I still in Melbourne?". We came here on a chilly Thursday evening and the vibes that we got from this place were surreal. Although the place presents itself as a 'street food' style environment, it is actually very warming inside.
We ordered a Rare Sliced Beef Pho, Red Curry Chicken w/bread and the Vietnamese Grilled Meat Platter. Surprisingly, the best part of the meal was the bread. Crisp, crunchy and soft in the inside, an ideal combo with the curry. If you had any choice to get anything with your dish, get the bread, you won't be disappoint. All in all, this place presents great vibes, cosy atmosphere and delicious food. All that together, is a solid "we're coming back here".

Found on Eatclub, I came here for lunch with a work colleague.
District Mot is a small restaurant located in a laneway off Lonsdale st that offers indoor and outdoor seating.
We tried the mixed grill and mixed seafood grill and with each platter it comes with 3 different kinds of skewers and salad. The meats are seasoned and cooked well. It'll would be nice if they provided more lettuce since 2 pieces is not enough to wrap all the skewers.
Service was pretty much non existence and there were no other tables occupied.
The 3 coloured drink/dessert was really good. One of the better ones available in the cbd

I’m in love with the bbq pork skewers here. They are a definite 5/5 dish and the sauce is delicious. A must order. Price is very good at this venue and the decor is great, and accompanied by good service.
