Quite simply, I love Lucky Dog Grille and everything about it. The food, the bar, service, the crowd, the ambiance and the atmosphere. Beast smoked wings ever, and they're huge! I like them best without sauce. As a word of caution, the barbecue sauce scale is weighted on the hot side. I rate even the mild end as hot. But why cover those deliciously smoky Lucky Dog wings with sauce?
Great group hangout.... We go to Lucky Dog every Saturday night for team trivia (go Average Joes! "Those guys suck..."). The place is big, in fact it's almost like two separate establishments, with a bar on the left side and a restaurant on the right. And it's packed as hell every Saturday, even at 8PM when trivia starts.
I am sure trivia has something to do with how busy the place is, but the food helps. It's quite good, actually, much better than I expected when we first started coming. The pot stickers appetizer is delicious, the burgers are big and juicy (and there are a lot of them to pick from), and their specialties are wings and steak sandwiches. The wings are on the expensive side but you understand why when you see them. They're massive. I am guessing they're from dinosaur chickens. The only place I've had comparable wings are at Rick's Tavern in Fairfield. The steak sandwiches are the biggest surprise though -- if you know me, you know I'm very particular about steak sandwiches. In this city there's basically Penn Station... and that's it. I usually won't even order a steak sandwich anywhere else, because they use the wrong bread, the meat has no flavor, etc. But at the urging of our friend Nicole who works there (who we've known for almost 10 years, since back in her Village Tavern days) I decided to give theirs a try, and I'll be darned if I didn't like them. It might not be Pat's or Geno's, but for a Cincinnati bar they really are good. And kudos to them for actually serving malt vinegar, which is an absolute must on a cheesesteak. Many places don't have it.
I can't say I've been here late night, and I haven't been on here much on days other than Saturday, but they do have karaoke during the week with Jimmy and Lisa (our favorite karaoke MC's from Village Tavern), and there's a pool table. There's also a lot of TV's around, though I'm deducting half a star because the biggest TV (a large projector screen that happens to be right in front of where we're always sitting) is never on when we're there, even during college football season. We always have to complain to the manager to get him to turn it on, which is silly on a Saturday night when you have college football on dozens of other little TV's. They earn back the half star I deducted though because unlike most places we play trivia, this one actually allows you to use the gift cards you win on alcohol. With $30 to the winning team every week, our first three buckets are almost paid. Can't beat that. (note: that won't apply to you, since you have to win. Na na boo boo stick your head in doo doo, we're better than you. Thank you, Tosh.0...)
In the end, we are very, very glad they started having trivia here Saturday's. Previously we went to Through the Garden every Saturday, and frankly the only reason we did was because it was the only convenient place to play. Not only is Lucky Dog closer, but being able to play, eat better food, spend less money, AND watch football on Saturday nights... well, that's a tough combo to beat.
Pleasant Surprise. We were hungry at 3:00 in the afternoon. Usually a bad time to try a new place in my experience. 3:00 is kinda in-between and the service and food is usually not the best. We stopped at the Lucky Dog because I thought it was a hot-dog restaurant. Turns out its a sports bar. I was prepared for slow service and greasy bar food. There were only about 4 diners, all sitting at the bar. The woman behind the bar greeted us warmly. We sat down and were surprised at the size of the menu. In fact we could not decide! The server (the bar-tender) made suggestions, brought drinks right away, and gave us a brief history of the place.
The food was pretty good-Not excellent, but better than we expected. I would give the food a 7 out of 10 (my fish was a little greasy, but a tasty large portion for the price)
The service was outstanding!
Real Good Wings!. Went last night, love the wings! Family friendly as well. We'll be back!
A great surprise. My husband, children and I decided to try Lucky Dog on a Tuesday (kids eat free). We were somewhat hesitant to try a new place, but decided to give it a shot. Service was slow at the beginning, but our server redeemed herself for the rest of the meal. Because it was a Kids Night, we were not as worried about our children (ages 3 and 1) making noise, as the place was pretty loud already.
The food was excellent!! We ordered the potato skins-VERY cheesy and greasy (i.e. just the way they should be). Chicken Quesadilla was amazing, boneless wings were perfect and the garlic sauce was fab. Even the kid's grilled cheese was great. Whoever was cooking knows how to make perfect "bar" food. I also really want to try the chicken wrap with feta sauce (another patron said it was really good).
Overall, we were all super-impressed (and that is not an easy task). We will visit again, probably on a Tuesday when kids rule the place.
My husband & i LOVE going there every thursday in the early afternoon - 3ish with our two bulldogs, one english & one french. in fact, it's the only day of the week that we typically go there, dog day afternoon. the food is good & and very good deal. we see alot of the same thursday regulars with their poochies and we often see newcomers. we can't wait until springtime again......hurry, hurry. the atmosphere at lucky dog is totally relaxed. everyone's dogs run around in the enclosed patio and play and greet people at their tables. all the people talk to each other about their favorite topics & of course, their dogs. it's a really fun place.
Been there on Aug 8, 2023, finally putting a review.
Balcony pet friendly. My dog was given ice cold bowl of water.
The food was overall pretty good. I can see why it was voted for the best of north.
I'd come back here if/when I'm traveling nearby and try things.
It's a dog-friendly restaurant that has a menu for dogs as well.
We loved this place. OMG! The server was amazing. He was knowledgeable, very polite, and nice. They were busy but he made sure everything is Ok with us. The service was fairly fast despite the big sign at the door which asks customers to be patient as they're experiencing short staff and long wait times.
The food was great with a nice presentation. They're flexible with substituting items in the menu as long you're not getting too far😄
I can't express how happy we are with this place. It is going to be our go-to restaurant.
Thank you, guys, guys at lucky dog grill - y'all are amazing. We will definitely see you again soon
Absolutely delicious dinner! Cheeseburgers, fries, salad, and great tasting baked beans. Michelle was a fantastic server. Very polite!
This place was a pleasant surprise. Like many I’ve transplanted to this area and this place gave me the feel of back home authentic local cooking. Everything was made with quality and love, it’s easy to see. They clearly are using a legit smoker out back. There is a great variety of beers, local/regional and domestic in draft. The hostess, waitress/waiter, everyone we encountered were nice and welcoming. Best service I’ve had in Mason by far. Will surely return.
Likes: Quality of Service
Dislikes: Smokey BBQ Sauce being the base sauce of the burnt ends. Some items lacked seasoning.
Recommended Dish/Item: Smoked Wings. Absolutely great.
We were looking for a new place to have dinner in the Mason area and decided on the Lucky Dog Grille, based on previous reviews. We found a place with a fun atmosphere, friendly service and some fantastic wings.
I can't recall our server's name, but she was very polite, friendly and quick to offer suggestions from the menu. There was a slight wait for our drinks, but there was only one bartender so we expected that.
Our food was served quickly and was as ordered. The whole chicken wings were everything you'd want from a smoked wing - big, juicy, lots of meat and flavor. I really enjoyed the heat and flavor of the spicy Carolina BBQ sauce! The jalapeno poppers were stuffed full of cheese and wrapped with crisp bacon. I was disappointed with the burnt ends. They may have been burnt and crispy at one time, but they were smothered with so much BBQ sauce that you could no longer tell. The mac and cheese tasted fresh and had plenty of gooey, delicious cheese.
There's a medium sized bar with stools and a large dining room. A number of televisions are wall mounted for customers to view. The bathrooms were clean and updated.
Sara was an awesome server. We took our dog up and sat on the patio, they brought us a water bowl for my doggy and a doggy menu. She had a hot dog and dog biscuits. I had the smoked jalapeno appetizer and the smoked prime rib Philly. I can't wait to try the wings! Everything was amazing we will be back.
Large group together in town for sports tournament. Service was great and they wanted to please very bad. Accommodating and service was prompt. Food was fine. Not mind blowing but it was hot and came out quickly. Beers and drink selection was great. Slightly off main drag area but with so many people in town for tourney, it was nice to be someplace not super busy.
The Lucky Dog menu is unique and full of delicious food. My only gripe would be that the specifically says deep fried dill spears and we were served dill chips. Our service was spectacular and could not ask for anything better. Due to our great service I did not complain about our chips over spears! Great place to eat, I highly recommend giving them a try.
I took a chance on the Lucky Dog and I got lucky! I got three of their 2 piece smoked wings and they were excellent. Combined with a couple Corona lite beers and I was a happy customer. The menu has much more than wings.. Here's some pics of the Lucky Dog on Reading Rd, Mason.
An excellent experience at Lucky Dog! We had hungry kids and the food came out really quickly. Reviews recommended the chicken tenders and they did not disappoint. Typical bar food but the portions were incredible and the prices were extremely reasonable. The bacon-wrapped jalapeños were smoky and delicious. Our server Michelle made sure our drinks were filled, empty plates taken away, and to go boxes brought all before asking. Excellent service and the food came out fast! Very friendly staff. We didn’t have alcohol but if Lucky Dog has a beer special, this is the place to be any night of the week! Great TV’s for watching sports in a very spacious restaurant. We will be returning and can 100% recommend Lucky Dog for a quickly prepared, delicious American fare dining experience.
