Review Kashmir Indian Restaurant - Louisville

Patrick Lewis
I put this on my list of S tier restaurants in Louisville... The food is authentic to Indian culture. It's even family owned and operated. They are always in there working. Always. Determined to deliver real food to the city of Louisville. When you go in, it's typically not busy. However, there's always people waiting for to-go orders. This place is a hit on Uber eatz etc. We have had several different dishes. And you can't go wrong in what you pick. The lasting theme is that the flavor is bold, spiced well, the meat is very tender. Enjoy! P.s. the garlic Nan and chutney is always a MUST for my wife and I. Its so good

In town for Run for the Roses, and found this to be the only open Indian restaurant within miles. Glad it was, food was very good. My daughter order veg samosa and butter chicken and was happy with her food. I ordered lamb something with mild spice but there was none, but it was good. Service was fast. Will definitely eat here again.

This is me and my girlfriend’s favorite spot. We tried this place for the first time, on our first date. Every anniversary we come here. Love this place. Great place, amazing food.

man was it delicious! I had never eaten authentic Indian cuisine and I really enjoyed it. The owner even helped me pick out my selection on the menu, and my curiosity and love for veggies led me to try the veg sampler appetizer (and finished the ENTIRE thing). food was fresh, fast, and delicious… and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Def recommend!!

This is the best Indian restaurant in our family history of eating Indian food anywhere from Chicago, NYC, west coast or the south. We haven’t been to India or London. Kashmir uses the freshest ingredients in a no frills but warm and friendly atmosphere. Our kids have literally grown up eating there for the past 15 years.

Kashmir definitely ranks in the top tier Indian restaurants in Louisville! The chicken Tikka masala was hot and delicious! The naan was crisp and buttery! But my favorite thing actually might be the vegetable pakora- crunchy fried veggies with tamarind sauce and onion chutney is just too good ☺️

On my last visit to Kashmir I ordered some chicken appetizer. Tonight when I went back I couldn't remember the name of it but after describing it to the guy taking my order we thought we got it figured out. So I ordered the appetizer and my usual chicken biryani. After I left and looked at my order it definitely wasn't the appetizer I wanted but holy hell it was 100 times better! I'm still not sure of the name but it was grilled chicken with onions and peppers and it was GD delicious. Kashmir is my favorite restaurant in Louisville. Awesome food. Awesome staff. I kept meaning to get a picture of the mysterious, delicious chicken but I couldn't stop eating it. Seriously. Kashmir. Mmmmm

Cozy little place, food is absolutely delicious the chicken chili is full of flavor and a side of garlic Naan is prefect with this dishe for a cold day. They also have lamb and a large variety of courses.

In town for an Expo, really enjoyed the food, Samosas 2 ways both really good Cheese pakora was a 1st for us, can not say if it was good or not, but we did not care for it. Naan 3 different ways (garlic is top notch) Chicken tikka masala ( hot means hot ) Lamb saag medium was great. The main dishes came with rice( did not know this at the time) but grubhub asks if you want rice at an additional charge so we ended up with 4 pints of rice 😉. Will keep this place in mind the next time we are in the area

Kashmir has been a staple for me for decades. I was also able to dine at the Lexington location when I lived there for college. Since the pandemic I haven’t dined in much but I love, love, love some Kashmir!

Great place to go to try Indian Dishes especially Biryani! The interior was designed with pictures and frames and was lovely. The food was fantastic! We tried the Kashmir House Special called the Special Thali and it was delicious! It has lamb curry, chicken leg, shrimp dishes, rice and lentil soup. Everything on it was amazing and was presented well and tasted great! They also have an outdoor area where you can have your meal and hang out. Good place to dine in and eat delicious Indian meals!
Ali
it was pretty good. the butter naan came with big CHUNKS of butter all over it. the building seems like it needs some renovations

Another trendy hipster place on Bardstown Rd.

Smells like a bad beer fart. Rude owners who are rip off landlords. They also like to nosey into the other nearby bars/restaurants.

(Happened on 3/19/19)

Okay guys, I really hate to do this but I have to. Prepare for a long rant.

Kashmir was one of my favorite restaurants in Louisville and my go to comfort food. BUT.

Today I ordered Kashmir on Postmates, Chicken Tikka Masala. It gets to my house and I start eating it and I bite into something hard. I look at what I just bit into and it is RAW CHICKEN.

So I call the restaurant and they sound surprised and ask me what I would like to do about it. I said all I want is a new order because I'm nervous about the rest of my previous order for seemingly obvious reasons. They accept.

I drive to pick up my delivery order that I was NOT EVEN OFFERED TO BE REFUNDED FOR, but that's fine, I'm hungry. When I get there the man at the counter barely looks at me and points to a bag on the table and tells me that's mine and then proceeds to tell me that I am lying and that it is not possible that this happened, insinuating I am making the whole thing up.

So, fine. I take the bag and ignore his comments. The bag is just chicken, not the whole order with rice. I ask if I could have rice with the chicken because I put the chicken on top of the rice I previously had.

He tells me no. And that he doesn't believe me in the first place and that I have to pay if I want rice also.

YOU GUYS. I have been in that restaurant 10000 times, I am probably single handedly keeping Kashmir afloat with the amount I eat there. I have concerned friends to back this up. My point is, they have to know I'm a regular customer?!

So I left the chicken there, walked out, and am now not only super disappointed that I have to cross this off my list of amazing Louisville restaurants but also regretting that I feel the need to warn other people because that guy obviously DOES NOT CARE about health codes/food safety.

I am planning to report this to the health department tomorrow.

Went for lunch recently and tried the buffet. I've been wanting to try this place because Indian cuisine is perhaps my favorite food. I love the layered spices and flavors. This particular place is somewhat dumpy inside and out. The food on the buffet was very tasty and fresh, and staff was friendly enough. Chicken curry and Marsala were both nice. The let down was their naan bread--I've have much better. Would like to try again and order from the menu instead.
Natalie Shields
I love Kashmir for a cold rainy day or in the winter because the chicken or lamb Marsala can warm you up from the inside out! The regular and mild levels are very good and for someone who isn’t used to spicy they were perfect!

2.0 star rating 10/27/2017

I have been eating here for years so I was very disappointed on several counts when I went yesterday. First, most of the food was as good as always. But, the nan was placed under some other food and so was sweaty and soggy, very doughy, so not good at all. Second, the sag paneer had NO paneer. And while it had a good taste is was watery. Even though there were quite a few empty tables, we were seated in the middle room at a table that was severely uneven, I mean like 2 or 3 inches at an angle, so it was not comfortable. Not sure why they would even seat anyone there, much less when the place was only half full. The woman who was attending was not very vigilent or friendly. The tea ran out and was not refilled for a long time, so we never got a second cup of tea. Sadly, I will probably not be returning, but will drive a little further to eat at the much better Shalimar. And I would suggest you do the same. And, they refused to accept a coupon and were rude about it. I highly recommend you go elsewhere.

I’ve eaten at this place a few times. Great Indian food. I enjoy eating in their outside dining space. Every thing I’ve ordered has been good.

Easiest review ever.

Place is dirty. Place stinks. Owners are rude.

I have to add this because the review has to be at least 140 characters.

This was my second visit. I had shrimp curry, butter chicken and chicken biryani. All spicy. Liked it better spicy. In my first visit, I took the veg thali. I don't recommend it. The food is the only good part. The staff is alright, not the friendliest. I don't know if they treat only brown people like that because whoever I spoke to about this place loves it. Well, let's hope you have a better experience.

We have dined here many times over the past eight years, both this location and the old location two doors down that burned. We have always had great experiences weather dining just the two of us or entertaining visiting friends. The outdoor patio area is great during the season and very relaxed. The inside areas are a little broken up but it is comfortable.

Service is decent, even when they are busy they are courteous and attentive. ON every visit we have found the restaurant, patio and bathrooms to be clean.

We have tried many of the dishes and enjoyed all of them. Our favorite standby's would be:

Garlic Nan
Meat Somosas
Lamb Rogan Josh
Chicken Vindaloo

By no means is this list all inclusive, we have enjoyed many of the menu items and they have all been served steaming hot, fresh and seasoned perfectly. They also offer several genuine Indianan beers and several wines by the glass or bottle.

We have always left satisfied, the price is good, quantity and great and food is always great. We will continue to visit here anytime we are back in the Louisville area and highly recommend it to our visiting friends.

Great Indian food in a modest, albeit accessible, setting. Wine and beer options including some solid Indian lagers. Highlights include the saag and the vegetable samosas.

I was on a work trip to Louisville KY and tried this place.
I had ordered take out .
Chicken biryani and chicken tikka.
The chicken biryani was just right, the right spices, the rice and chicken were tender and moist and the flavour 😘😋
one of the best biryani I have had so far on my travels.
The quantity was great. The chicken tikka was just right for starter.
My order was ready on time and the Houst was pleasant.
If you are near the Louisville airport then it is worth the drive.

Love this place. I go here once every week to two weeks, at least. A lot of the time I am just picking up take out, but it's amazing. Always hot off the stove and super generous portions. It's a little pricey for what I order which is Chicken Tikka Masala, rice and plain naan bread, coming in around $18 but it's so delicious and usually I can get two meals out of it.

I haven't experienced any service problems in all my times of going there, either. I eat in there at least once a month for the past year now and I haven't had any issues. They are always quick to fill up my glass with more water, and offer anything we might want. My friend and I use coupons we got off of groupon when we eat in, and they've never said they don't accept it.

Overall, 10/10 for the chicken tikka masala. I absolutely adore it. Not sure about much else since I am a creature of habit.

The worst restaurant experience I had in my entire life. I went there to with my family on mother's day for snack and some tea in the afternoon. The guy, so called manager and owner refused to server us saying he is not willing to use 5 plates for the our order and literally ask us to leave. When I asked to talk to manager, he said he is the manager and owner and he is refusing to serve us. Let me remind you, this happen on the Mother's Day and my mother really wanted to have some Indian snack as she just traveled 2 days days back and was really craving for Indian food.

Horrible experience. If you want to hate Indian Cuisine for the rest of your life, you should definitely try this joint. Horrible , as eating burnt rubber.
God, I cannot even begin to describe the smelly ambiance, minimal courteousness and tending to zero customer service of this plce(got too technical there, huuh !!). Anyways, it was a blunt microwaved Biryani (which apparently was chicken curry mixed with steamed rice ) and a stale stinky daal (soup) combined with chicken drumsticks tasting like smoked fish without any spices. Never ever would I recommend anyone to try this place. Its embarrassing to me as an Indian. I bet I can cook waaaayyy better than this.

Kumar Monti. I like v samosas here very good India food

Not a great experience. Food was good, but management was rude and tried to over charge our
group of four. Only one order of naan was at my table yet she tried to charge for 3 orders- very shady in my opinion. I would much rather go a little further down Bardstown Rd to Dakshin for straight forward pricing and friendlier service.
Levertis
They charge extra for any rice now with entrees. I was a regular for over a decade and went there despite the constant whispers about the owner's shadiness as an employer. I've never been able to substantiate those rumors and he's always been friendly. However, lately, the quality of good seems to have slipped a little and, what's more, they're now sneakily charging extra for rice with your entree. Not *extra* rice, mind you, *any* rice. I probably will not return.

Kashmir Lunch Buffet. I have eaten here several times and had all positive experiences from the Lunch Buffet. Some of the items remain the same and some of the items change depending on the day. One plate will fill you up and there are plenty of choices. For $9.00 you cannot beat the quality of the food and the unique tastes.

Lamb Tandoori ???????????. Are you kidding me???? WTF Was this??? I ordered off of the Tandorri section (this means long cooked in a clay covered dish). What arrives was some kind of "meat loaf" type of sausage cut into pieces...... NOT LAMB. with raw onions on a hot metal dish like you get with mexican fajitas... This was soooo far from what I ordered that I was flabbergasted. Except I was on a 1st date and did not want to make a scene. It was a complete disappointment. Kashmir has moved several doors down - I was hoping for a BETTER outcome.
Am not sure I will ever try them again.......... Which is such a SHAME!!!!!!!!! How can you mess up such a standard???? We also ordered Naan with spinach it was good, and another dish that I though was pimentos - turned out to be onions in SUPER HOT SAUCE - it about killed me!!!!!!!!!! My Date seemed happy with his dish even though he only ate half of it???
I will give you 1 star..........
The female server delivered our drinks by their lips....... very unsanitary
The Decent Man
Savory Indian Cusine. We came here for a wedding rehearsal dinner (20+ people) and ordered off the menu but experienced none of the problems restaurants have in dealing with parties that size. The food was reasonably priced, arrived very fast, had just came off the stove, was apportioned generously, and was delicious. My wife and I shared the Vegetarian Biryani, Lamb Rogan Josh, and some Naan. The staff was very courteous and attentive.

Food Coma!. My husband and I went on a double date to Kashmir and loved it! I had read quite a few bad reviews and was nervous about the food and service quality but wanted to try something different! We ordered a chicken tandoori appetizer to share, it was served with an onion chutney and a tamarind sauce, all very good! I ordered the Vegetarian Thali, which is a sampler of a 4 veggie dishes, lentil soup, rice, bread, and a small bit of dessert. It was wonderful, each dish had a unique flavor, with a definite kick of spice! My husband ordered the chicken vindaloo, which is a spicy chicken dish. The other couple ordered lamb curry and a combination dinner(a bunch of different kinds of meat brought out on a skillet). The spice levels were definitely up there but the flavors were wonderful! The size portions were perfect, two of us brought home leftovers.
Like a couple people have said before, the service was not great. We got seated right away and always had our cups filled but the warmth level of the servers was quite low. It wasn't a big deal to me though!
I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something different and definitely delicious!

Bait and Switch. I purchased a Restaurant.com certificate to be used at Kasmir Indian Restaurant. When I presented the certificate to pay my bill I was told that it could not be used for the buffet. I stated that there was no exclusion of the buffet on the certificate. The owner stated that it could not be used on the buffet and that I would have to come back for dinner to use it. The buffet is a regular part of the menu at Kasmir, it is not a special. The certificate did not exclude the lunch menu. While the certificate was successful in bringing my business to Kasmir, the refusal to honor the conditions as stated on the certificate have been successful in my decision to not return.

3.5/5. Just okay, much better options in the city

Still My Favorite!. This is my favorite restaurant in Louisville. I have never ordered anything I didn't like; the vegetarian selections are just as flavorful as the entrees with meat. The service is always wonderful and love the atmosphere. This place has the ultimate comfort food; always leave feeling warm and happy!

I went for dinner, it was pretty busy so it took a while for us to get seated but the food was delicious and the staff was efficient. They have a huge menu of authentic Indian dishes, we requested mild and it was perfect! They had some imported Indian beer too which was fun. I would recommend and return. :)

An Unhappy Experience. Came in for lunch buffet around 2:15 PM. Lunch buffet items were dry and lukewarm. Staff would hover over us, however my water glass was never refilled. Nearing 3 o'clock, we were told to fill our plates with what we may want from the lukewarm buffet because they were closing it down. Staff hovered still, repeatedly asking me what else I may want from the buffet.
I figured out that the hovering was because they were waiting to make their lunch plates from what was left of the buffet. Couldn't find anyone after that. Staff went to the back of the restaurant to enjoy their meals. My boyfriend went to look for them so I could have water finally.
It was just an awkward and uncomfortable experience that I prefer to never repeat.

I remember yosamirhere saying bad things about this place. It was the best experience I ever had with Indian. I went back 4 times to the Buffett. It was almost a religiously good experience. I was sweating and percolating as the deliciousness entered my mouth.

By far my favorite Indian Restaurant in Louisville! The chicken curry with rice and chutney is soooo good. I also like the samosas!
Mrrrrrow
Great restaurant, bad food. This restaurant is so close to my house. It's definitely the best location and it's just so cute! Service is also really good. I went to this restaurant for a birthday and the birthdayperson was given a free dessert. The staff are just really really nice. Unfortunately, the food is consistently poor. It usually is just kind of bland. The last time I was there, my matter paneer was like liquid instead of a nice sauce. For Indian food in this part of town, Sitar is the best option.

Not so great. My husband and I dined there for dinner.at 5:15. Thought things would be especially fresh/hot that early. Thank goodness we had a Groupon or we would have really been disappointed. I ordered the 'special' Thali for $14.95 thinking it would be a good way to sample several offerings. It came on a metal platter with some not too hot, obviously old dry rice and a greasy piece of nan. In the TINY metal bowls there was a selection of lamb curry, a spinach dish (sag?)and a lentil dish. Riatta on the side. Oh, I almost forgot the dried up 'tandoori' chicken leg! I have had really good Indian food and this was unacceptable. My husband had a Briyani was around $14. He said it was OK, but again, a small portion.
The service was brusque at best. We had the feeling the idea was to get us up to the cash register and out the door ASAP even though there were only a few other diners. We were glad to oblige! Oh yes I almost forgot the bad smell by the restrooms.

Never picked a bad thing off the menu. The food is wonderful, especially their lamb sag. I miss living down the street from here!

Very comfortable atmosphere and location. Perfect for outside dining when nice out. Quick service and unbelievably good food and the prices are reasonable. Recommended

Worst dining experience ever!. The server insulted my boyfriend and I, and made me feel like a fool. He touched my food and made me feel uncomfortable. I will not be returning. The server ruined what could have been a great, new experience.
Hafiz Nor Razak
Food was good. Had to repeatedly ask for dishes to be set out on buffet.

New location, same Kashmir. It doesn't seem that much has changed at the new Kashmir. Lunch buffet was delicious as ever, and so damn cheap. $7.95 for endless Indian food! Are you serious?! Wish there was some obvious way to spice up the fare offered, but that's just an incidental gripe. Even my mom, who has claimed to "hate" Indian food, loved this place! She offered to take me there for dinner!
Evil Jeanius
Had a fire. Sign on door said closed and all boarded up.
TMac
Sit Outside!. The food is decent (tandoori is a little dry), but you've gotta love the patio on a beautiful evening!
Candis
Overall solid experience. Kashmir is my go-to for Indian in Louisville. The Tikka Masala and the curries are always great, plus the veggie samosas rock my face off! The service is mediocre, probably, but I know most of the staff and love them. Kashmir has the best, make that the BEST, tamarind sauce anywhere. Well worth a try, especially the lunch buffet.
Maeg
Yum!. Great lunch prices. Some of the best rice ever! Veggie friendly!
David Barnes
Some hits and some misses!. The garlic Nann was so heavy with raw garlic that I still taste it. The sauce on the lamb vindaloo was killer, unfortunately the lamb was as tough as a stepmothers love. I might try it again?
GoldStandard
Good but uncomfortable.. The food was typical Indian fare, I don't exactly understand why LEO votes it the "best of" every year. The restaurant itself is somewhat uncomfortable to be in. Two experiences that make me feel that way:

1. When my girlfriend and I watched from our table, straight into the kitchen, a worker grabbing a rat off of the ground and discarding it. The squeaks of the rat were louder than Bardstown Road traffic at 5:00 p.m.

2. The head waiter was too close for comfort to my female companions, enough so that we left early.
Larry Tannheimer
Best Indian in town. Suffers from the all too common practice of only hiring family to work. Understaffed but food and patio well worth it.
Jeff Biggs
Best of Louisville. The best Chicken Tikka Masala I have ever had. Solid Northern Indian taste. Fantastic Aloo Nan, Aloo Tikki, Saag Paneer. The best Tamarind Sauce and Mint Chutney as well.
Rachel
Good food and mediocre service. I would recommend because the food and price are pretty good.
