This review is specific to heart and soy. I have never eaten at roots. The food is excellent. Lots of variety, different choices of drinks and desserts. The only issue with Service is that it can get quite busy and you may have to wait a while for your food, but the staff is friendly and attentive. I am allergic to peas and carrots, and I love that I am able to substitute broccoli in the veggie fried rice. My husband loves the bánh mì sandwich, and I also like the Hué soup and Singapore noodles.

Singapore noodles and fried tofu - do I need to say more? Half the restaurant is broken into self serve and other half is server. Tofu is made right on location. Good location but limited parking options - be warned.

Flavorful fried rice and decent size serving although not huge. Amazing how they get the tofu to have a texture similar to chicken. One of the better fried rice dishes I have had in recent memory. Did not miss the meat at all and I am not a vegetarian. Healthier too. Can’t wait to try the soups. They make the tofu right there in the restaurant. Very friendly staff. I plan on a return visit soon.

WOW this place is so delicious, healthy, and adorable! I loved the fresh spring rolls with the Taro root frozen boba tea 🧋 Yum! The staff was super nice and quick with the preparation of food. Inside there is special seating for dinner and it looks so lovely I can’t wait to actually sit down and eat. It was super slow the day that I went in and I couldn’t believe it because the food/tea was so incredible. You have to give this place a try even if you are not Vegan/Vegetarian - the tofu taste like chicken 😅
Catherine
The foods were so good. I did enjoyed the boba tea which I had passionfruit.
I would like to come back to try few more and also check their other place on the other side too.

A hidden gem in the heart of Louisville!!!!
BEST vegetarian food we've had!!! The food tasted amazing. So many choices on the menu. I strongly recommend the sizzling rice cake (xôi chiên) and the clay pot tofu. So yummy. Would definitely come back!
Steve Hammond
This restaurant is so good! My wife is gluten free and vegetarian and hasn't had udon noodles in over ten years! The food reminded her of her dad's cooking when she was little. Great service and amazing food. When we are back in Louisville we will definitely be coming back!
Jennifer Sullivan
The BEST food! Everything has delicious flavor with no compromise to health! Service both times we’ve been was amazing. Pictured: orange tofu, green curry, roasted vegetables, Thai salad, potato nest.

Food and service are both amazing!!! I like the concept of separating 2 division of the restaurant, one for dinning and another for casual eat. I brought a friend that has never been eaten in a vegetarian restaurant before, and she LIKES it!! She says she didn't feel like she is eating all plant based food, she says she can't tell that there is difference. Highly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting or living in Louisville

Great bowl of warm Ramen for a cold day! I'm not a vegetarian and everything on the menu is vegetarian but I didn't mind. The tofu was tasty and the broth and vegetables were very good I'll definitely be back. Thank you!

Heart and Soy has been a favorite for a quick lunch for years, but we just threw my mom's 80th birthday party at Roots and I can't say enough about how well we were treated. Love this place, the food, the staff, everything.
Erin Bridges
I am so grateful for the soul-filled, nourishing meals at Heart and Soy and Roots. The food has only gotten better throughout the years, and the staff is just so kind. There are few places in town with such a wide variety of veggie-friendly meals. Also, they make their tofu in house!
They do get busy with takeout orders at times, so be patient. The taro pudding is to die for, the bahn mi and fried tofu are the best in town and so affordable and fresh, and you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Other faves: Vietnamese noodles with egg rolls/tofu/extra veggies, the tofu clay pot, lemongrass noodles, and the cucumber rolls.

We’re traveling from Dayton, OH to Mayfield, KY. On the way we stopped for dinner at Heart & Soy which is the only tofu manufacturer in the state. This stop turned into a quick car date.
The food is absolutely delicious and I’m sure the Roots location next door is equally good. We enjoyed the jicama rolls, fresh spring rolls and steamed buns.
Two tongues up! 😋😋

So good, im very impressed! Good portions on the noodle dishes. My MIL is vegan and introduced us to this restaurant over a year ago and glad she did. I went for the lettuce wraps and the gyro this time. Never disappointed.

You know you've found a gem when you purposely slow down eating to make the enjoyment last... I literally slowed the pace of spooning up my Butternut Squash soup as I neared the bottom of the bowl to make the experience last! WOW what a great place to eat at a BARGAIN price for the quality of the food, it's presentation and the setting. If you haven't eaten here you are truly missing out! It has the widest array of Vegan and Vegetarian selections I've ever seen. Did I say WOW!!

My husband and I had a day to ourselves and drove into Louisville specifically for this restaurant. I'm lactose intolerant and I was so excited to be able to order whatever on the menu sounded good instead of trying to find a safe option. As a bonus, I got to try a dish I never have before! We will definitely be back since I couldn't decide between 4 or 5 things.
Steve Sellers
Very good food. Make sure you ask for both menus. It's like a bonus that you can order food from both resteraunts as I guess they share a kitchen. Food from both menus was great. There are many, many, many options. The crispy shitake mushroom dish was to die for. Even my daughters who don't generally like mushrooms loved it. I am not vegan, but 2 of my daughters are. We had 2 vegans i vegetarian and 2 carnivors in our group. We all enjoyed the dinner. Appetizers are priced well enough that you can tey a variety if you have 4 or more people in your party.

I've gotta say I was very impressed. I ordered the Korean Rice Bowl and it was delicious! It was my 1st time trying tofu, and I will definitely be eating it again! Everything was fresh and tasty!
Jordan Maddox
I’ve never been to a Vietnamese restaurant, let alone vegetarian-based and this blew me away. Every single thing we ordered was fresh and delicious! Service was excellent! Can’t wait to come back for more.

Good (Heart and Soy):
* wide menu with a great variety of flavors
* in addition to its own menu, any item can be ordered from its adjacent sister's menu (Roots) for carryout or dining "fast casual" style
* from vegan to carnivore, everyone is well taken care of
Cautions (Heart and Soy):
* ambiance was a little drab; not a big deal... just didn't seem to have any spark
In short, for the selection of food, this place is a must eat.

What a phenomenal selection for the vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore looking for a meat break. I had the Korean rice bowl with egg and it was so flavorful with spicy tofu, veggies (carrots and cabbage), and a runny egg over the top to give it an even richer taste. I also had a chai bubble tea, which tasted like an oatmeal cookie (good, but very sweet). My only regret is not having room for dessert!
Sarah Zehnder Steger
Went with family so we sampled alot, and everything was delicious! Friendly staff, food came out fast and was reasonably priced. We are new to being vegan and this was a great place to go out to eat and not feel a bit slighted!
John Zeydel
I'll definitely be bringing more clients here... The idea of compassionate cooking is so needed in this day and age... Yummy and also mindful of health and the impact on the whole world... Great experience.
Judith Pittman Brown
Peaceful atmosphere, delicious vegan food, and great service I would eat here every day if I could. One of my favorite restaurants in Louisville.
Stephanie Cleary
Always friendly customer service. Their dessert case is always excellent. I also like that you have the option of sit down dining or counter service, although we usually opt for the more casual counter.
Kirstyn Blandy
Down to earth, delicious, friendly staff, amazing food, good prices. Oh, yeah, and completely vegetarian/vegan-friendly menu. Big tea menu, too, also awesome!
Lisa Jordan Board
Their tea was prepared perfectly and they have a sublime selection too. Everything we ordered was delish! Our server was so friendly and knowledge. We will be returning soon.
Nathan Thompson
This place is awesome. You have to try it. Pad tie. Hue noodle. I go everyday.
Teresa Ellen Weber
Who needs meat?! That was the best meal I have had dining out in such a long time. The Tofu Clay Pot had the most wonderful flavor and the Vietnamese Crepe was delicious . My new number one place to dine!
Bobby Ray
If we lived in Louisville we would be here frequently! As it is, we've eaten on the Heart and Soy side twice and the Roots side once. Both menus were excellent and diverse and the Roots menu is marked so that vegans like myself can easily determine what dishes are fair game. All three meals there were delicious and we had dessert all three times as well, a rarity for us! Highly recommended.
Julie Neiner
The best!! Absolutely love this restaurant!
So many wonderful choices!
Jeff Victory
Best tofu I've ever had, and they make it in house. Super friendly staff and amazing food!
Autumn-Ivy Thornburg
Coconut bubble tea is my new favorite after trying it here along with a vietnamese sandwich and egg rolls. Everything was delicious.
Shelby Adkins
My SO and I went here Wednesday and it was fabulous! SO ordered the Potato nest and I ordered the Sizzling Rice plate.
Lakedog
A new favorite of mine. We had the pleasure of having lunch and were treated to delightful feast. It was so good I had to order an additional barbecue pork tofu sandwich to go as a late night snack.

Can't wait to go back.
If your coming looking for something authentic and delicious you found it! If your not willing to explore then it's not the place for you, because this is not Chinese takeout.

This a great restaurant near Cherokee park and the Presbyterian Seminary. The chef and owner was a Vietnamese refugee after the war was over and has a healthy spiritual approach in her food and life. Thanks so much for the fabulous avocado and tomato spring rolls and delicious Pho
Mikaela Frazier
YUM. Super-casual but super-good.. Delicious, affordable, amazing. Kind of a cafeteria-like atmosphere, so definitely not fancy, but the food is to die for.
Bourbon80
Mmmmm. Always delicious and crazy cheap!

Best vegan restaurant in town.. This is my entire family's favorite place to eat. Best tofu I've ever had and they make it themselves. We especially enjoy the Vietnamese sandwich, pad thai, spring rolls and soups but I've yet to have anything that I haven't enjoyed. The staff, which I believe are mostly extended family are always very courteous and pleasant. If you prefer a sit down meal then you can go next door to Roots. They share the same kitchen and are both run by the same family.
Miguel
Nice tasting food. More like fast food cafeteria than a restaurant. Enjoyed the food, but was hoping for a slightly nicer experience (waiter, ambiance, etc)
Suzie
The most creative restaurant in Louisville. The prices are more than reasonable just amazing
Devon
Good vegan food, but it is somewhat expensive. Pretty good Bubble Tea.
MBee
I could seriously eat the Hue spicy noodle soup every day. This place is awesome.
Patrick Serey
This place is great! I had the pad Thai and I loved it! I asked for their popular sauce and I added some of their hot sauce and it was delicious this place is great for vegans and vegetarians but amazing for everyone!

Perfect!. Heart & Soy has a great variety and perfect for casual lunch or dinner. Also, the atmosphere is fun. Try the jicama rolls and taro root bubble tea.
Sarah
New Fav!. My husband and I are vegan, so it is very hard to find a place to eat. I mostly cook at home but our once a week must have is Heart & Soy. They are awesome! I try something new every time and I'm always happy.
Mike B
Taste was good but portions are VERY small for what you pay.
Bridget Kelly
Everything I was missing!. I didn't just like it, I love Heart & Soy! I have been craving a veggie Vietnamese sandwich since I left San Francisco and I finally found a great one, it has been a bit different each time I've ordered but always great as with everything I have had the pleasure of trying.
Meagan
I had the spring rolls and the green papaya salad. One of the best lunches I've had in a long time. That salad is amazing. Their tofu is the best I've had. I highly recommend!
Born2expire
YUM!. Perfect vegetarian/vegan meals. Price is just right. I am very happy with Heart & Soy. I will bring all my out of town veg friends! The tofu, mmm.
Diane
Very nice!. Tried the BBQ Tofu with Brown Rice, sauce is very subtle, dish comes with nice vegetables. Perfect size portion, excellent meal. They offer delivery!
Bagsgirl
Delicious!! Spring rolls & the carrot cake cupcake were awesome!
Nick Moorman
Great selection of food at a good price. We finally went to try this new vegetarian place and were pleasantly surprised. Their menu is chock full of Asian-inspired dishes and about 85% of the items on it are vegan-friendly. Not only did they have a great selection to choose from, but they also make their own soy milk and tofu, which is pretty cool. They sell this a la carte, along with vegan cupcakes, some soups, and a few other things. I highly recommend this place, and we'll definitely be back soon.
