We used Shack in the Back for catering for our wedding. Barbara was super helpful, answering the numerous emails I sent to her leading up to our wedding. From the taste testing down to the wedding day service, Shack in the Back provided the absolute best service! I was so grateful for the staff at the reception as they were able to set up the beautiful buffet without needing any assistance or direction from me. I did not have to worry about one thing when it came to the food service at my wedding. I would recommend their services to anyone looking for catering for an event! But most importantly, the food was DELICIOUS!!!!!
Took our two youth baseball teams who traveled from Washington state. We were looking for authentic BBQ. What we got was so much more. Barb and Mike are absolute artisans. The food is incredible. Turkey ribs, brisket, pulled pork, all the sauces, and the spicy pickles! It’s all gold. And Katie, who served us, was fantastic. I’ve had bbq all over the country but never had an experience like this. Go and you won’t be disappointed.
When chuck Norris sleeps at night he dreams of shack in the back BBQ.
If I found a magical genie in a lamp who granted me three wishes, I'd wish for a pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese, and three more wishes because I'm not a total moron. Then I'd ask for a smoked bologna sandwich and some turkey ribs.
Why is the food so good? Seriously if you know I would like to. It's amazing.
Not to mention the people who work there are super nice.
9/10 because I just finished my food and can't relive the wonderful flavor until tomorrow.
Barbara and her staff were fantastic! Friendly, professional and efficient. Special accommodations for guests with dietary restrictions were handled with ease and was very much appreciated. Service was absolutely impeccable and the guests raved over the food! I would highly recommend them!
I’ve been told this is a great place to eat! My mom and I had lunch there yesterday and it was amazing! Pulled pork sandwich was delicious and tender, mac and cheese was sinful and fried skillet corn reminded me of my mother-in-law’s, which was one of my favorite dishes she made!
The staff was very friendly and gave yummy recommendations! Also, sampled a turkey rib! I was skeptical, but it was really good!
The food was awesome and the staff more than friendly. Had to wait a while on our food but they were extremely busy and after our food came it was all worth it! From appetizer to dessert it was a great foodie experience. Will definitely be back!
Barbara did an amazing job taking care of our wedding. We choose steak (chicken & pulled pork) salad, baked potato bar, baked beans and veggies. The staff was very kind and everything was decorated beautifully. The steak was tender. I am extremely happy with the services they provided !
We got Shack in the Back catering for our backyard wedding and it was a hit! The food was on time, and everyone loved it. Barbara was very easy to work with and the staff was very friendly when we went there to do a tasting. It was also very affordable! Definitely would recommend them for your event catering!!

Today was our First visit! And it Wont be the last! We eat out more than our fair share, All over town. And we have been to Most of the Bbque places in Louisville. Our complaint is typically that the meat is good and the sides have No flavor OR the sides are good and the meat is dry and tasteless. BUT SHACK IN THE BACK has it ALL!! We both had sampler plates. Pork ribs and Turkey ribs were Both Awesome! Brisket and Wings were Great! We had mac n cheese, green beans, potato salad and baked beans were delicious, full of flavor. And we Also had the Chess bars! They were Fantastic! All of the workers were very friendly! It's Definately Worth the Drive!! Thank you for the Great experience! Can't wait to go back!!
I have to give a BIG Thank you to Shack in the Back. They saved our early Thanksgiving. We had to have it early cause some family members have to work Thanksgiving. So i put my turkey in my electric roaster, clean a little, prepare some of the other stuff and then laid down to take a nap. Well, while i was sleeping my neighbor used my outside plug to blow his leaves. And blew a circuit. So need to say when i woke up an hour 1/2 later my turkey was raw dinner is at 6 this is 4. So i called the Shack and they said they had one. But it would cost me way more then i could afford.i didn't know what i was going to do. few mins later the phone rings. It's the shack saying they will give it to me half off. They saved our thanksgiving. Thank you so much. I'm forever greatful.
A legendary spot in Fairdale. Amazing bbq, great service, very nice atmosphere. If you haven't been, please try this place. Great menu items, a full bar, and great happy hour specials.
Great spot for local BBQ. The decor inside and out was new age rustic, and cute. Our service was great. We ordered:
1. Pork rinds - the group liked these, but pork rinds are not for me.
2. Homemade potato chips - these were delicious, and the accompanying white listening sauce was yummy. (5/5 🌟)
3. Beef brisket - a little dry but overall good flavor. The accompanying bbq sauces paired nicely. (4/5 🌟)
4. Pulled pork - this also had a good flavor. (4/5 🌟)
5. Potato salad - this mayonnaise based side was seasoned well and had great add-ins.
6. Green beans - these were delicious and were in an au jus like broth that I really enjoyed. (7/5 🌟)
Overall, it was a great place to stop and try the local eats. Would recommend.
Shack in the Back is a true Louisville(ish) gem. We visited here a few years ago, before the move to the new location, and promised we'd visit again.
Then things like COVID happened and life got in the way...so we finally made it to Shack in the Back again. Woo-Hoo!
While the original location definitely had its own charm and character, the new location is freakin' gorgeous. It's probably 3 or 4 times bigger than the original location, it has a large outdoor seating area, and even a few table on the second floor. (Yes, a Second Floor!)
We visited on a Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately. The weather was fantastic and there were a number of people eating outside (not me...I'm not an outdoor seating kinda guy). Our server greeted us immediately and got our drink orders.
The menu isn't extensive, but it doesn't need to be. It's well suited to Shack in the Back's focus (BBQ) and doesn't clutter the menu with nearly the same items.
I love, Love, LOVE the interior. It's kind of rustic inside with a lot of exposed wood, several television screens showing various sporting events, and the most unique gift shop I've ever seen. I get the impression that some time before it was the improved Shack in the Back that it was a bank. The gift shop is inside a literal bank vault. #CompletelyAwesome!
I had the pulled pork nachos (I'm a sucker for nachos anywhere I go) and we delighted to find they're served on fresh-made potato chips instead of your average tortilla chips. While I've had pulled pork nachos before, they did not measure up to Shack in the Back's.
Our server (Abby?) was spot-on with drink refills, making sure we had what we needed, and stopped for a friendly chat a few times.
I absolutely love the new location of Shack in the Back and I feel bad that I haven't been there in so long. Gonna have to fix that and go again soon.
First time at Shack in the Back. Service was a little slow but not too bad for a busy Friday night. Had the Turkey ribs appetizer, pulled pork sandwich with Mac and cheese/potato salad sides, and Combo #2 (Ribs, Smoked Sausage, Brisket, Pork with two sides of corn and fries). Turkey ribs were fantastic and an absolute must with their White Lightening Sauce. Also used their mustard based BBQ sauce on other items and that was very good as well. Pulled pork had a good smoke flavor. Andouille smoked sausage had good flavor and heat. Only disappointment was the Mac and cheese which was thin for my liking.
ETA: Went back today (5/13/23) and quality was still on point. Service was quick as well. Well priced for the quality of food. Went with the Turkey Rib Dinner and it was fantastic. Will come back out again and have found a favorite in the turkey ribs.
After a long hike, a Jefferson Memorial Forest we stopped in for lunch. It was more than just good. The turkey ribs were amazing and the pulled pork was excellent. The green beans were like crack I couldn’t stop eating them. From the hostess to our server Alexandria, we had a wonderful experience. It’s a long way for us to drive, but worth every mile!
Absolutely amazing BBQ in a really unique location. They've got all of the staples including pulled chicken, brisket and pork. I got the brisket sandwich and really enjoyed it. My wife really enjoyed her pulled chicken as well. The sides were all delicious as well. I really enjoyed all of the different sauces they offer, and even bought a bottle to take home with us. If you're a lover of BBQ, then definitely check this place out!
Great food. Glad we went here. This was my daughter's first time at the Shack. She really enjoyed her pulled pork sandwich, fries, and potato salad. I enjoyed my ribs, fries, and baked beans. I keep forgetting to buy a bottle of their sop, not as good as mine, but I like it. Much better prices and quality than the BBQ place closer to me, so worth the drive.
I will ABSOLUTELY be coming back here, and I live out of state! I had the full rack of ribs, side of baked beans, and a side of potato salad. Everything tasted exactly how it did in my head. Zero disappointments. And the BBQ sauces... 🤌🏼. The staff was super friendly, the prices were very reasonable, and the atmosphere made me fall in love. 🥰 Thank you SITB for making my stay in KY so amazing.
A great spot for some delicious BBQ. It’s known in the area and worth a stop if you get a chance. The brisket was really nice and the mac and cheese and green beans were excellent. There are four sauces to choose from, with all four having very distinct flavors (my favorites were the tangy and spicy). Nice staff with fast service. Go support this business.
Got the half slab with baked bean and mac&cheese. It was a little over 20 bucks but it seems all bbq is pretty high right now the food was good and I like how they put just the right amount of sauce and didn’t over do it. They also added a cup in case u wanna use more. I’ll return to try other options but everything was tasty
