Well Known Mochi Ice Cream @ Los Angeles (Founded 100+ Years Ago In L.A). After Early Dinner @ Little Tokyo ; Drop-By Mikawaya Retail Store , Buy Few Pieces Of Mochi Ice Cream (Coconut Pineaple , Mango , Pumpkin Spice , Red Bean , Strawberry). Mikawaya Mochi Ice Cream Is Available In Packaging Boxes Sold In Supermarkets. Good 🍡 😍
Researched and found by my son who loves Japanese cuisine, they had a variety of flavors of mochi! I think this was possibly the nicest outlet as we found the village small and not with too many shops and choice. Mochi is Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a short-grain japonica glutinous rice. The rice is pounded into paste and molded into the desired shape. In Japan it is traditionally made in a ceremony called mochitsuki. It is then filled with an ice cream.
Small shop tucked inside Little Tokyo. The interior is not all too impressive as it is dimly lit and doesn’t seem all too inviting HOWEVER, as you walk further in, you’ll find the little ice cream mochis lined in an enclosed fridge with little labels informing you of what flavors are more popular, staff favorites, etc. The boyfriend and I decided to try 3 different flavors: green tea (sweeter option than matcha), mango & Salted Caramel (most popular). I was super surprised at how good these actually were, especially since they were only priced at $1.50USD. The Mochi to ice cream portion was perfect (Mochi wasn’t too thick) and the icecream is creamy enough to bite through (unlike the frozen ice cream mochis you can buy in super markets). Highly recommend checking out this joint if you’re in the area, definitely won’t disappoint!
ORDER ICE CREAM. Their claim to fame is the Mochi Ice Cream. My favorite is the chocolate since the ice cream inside is so rich and dark. Otherwise, I like their plum wine ice cream which is a great marriage of sour and sweet with pieces of fresh plum. They now have good gelati....not quite like Vivoli in Firenze, Italy, but it beats having to travel 10 hours by jet to get there.
First thing on my mind: mochi: a Japanese rice cake and molded into a traditionally round shape. It can be eaten plain or flavored, sometimes sweet fillings inserted into the middle. There’s a shop called Mikawaya, tucked away into the corner of the complex. They’re known for their mochi ice cream and manufactures their varieties to different grocery stores in LA.
Mikawaya has been my favorite & will continue to be a favorite place for me when I'm craving a little mochi-filled delight. Great flavors, inexpensive & tasty, it's the perfect little "pick-me-up" treat to make your day just that much better.
This delicious dessert is sweet and chewy on the outside, cold and creamy on the inside.
Mochi Ice Cream store was jammed packed with at least 30 people waiting to get their hands on the most amazing Japanese ice cream!
To get here though, had to park (Staples) about 1/4 mile away with only one (1) hour parking. Purchased a snickers bar for $1.03 and got validation for free lol...
Excellent Ice cream, worth the walk.
Fresh and tasty mochi! The green tea flavor is always my favorite! You can buy cheaper box of this brand in local Trader Joe's or Costco but they are limited in flavors and not as fresh as in this store. They validate parking ticket here so bring your ticket with you if you park in the public parking structure.
The ice cream was amazing. Mochi is chewy and the ice cream itself was the perfect amount of sweetness.
I did not like the pumpkin pie mochi because it was too "spicey."
Coconut pineapple is like the Thrifty's ice cream but better. That was my favorite. Chocolate coming in a close second. The chocolate chips add a really nice texture.
Mango and green tea were good too.
Great place to stop in for some after dinner sweets!!!
Super delicious mochi's that come in various flavours such as green tea, plum wine, and black sesame, highly recommend the black sesame flavour.
Restaurant is a bit aged but still really clean. Service is good but could be friendlier. 5 stars is for food only.
Tried all the mochi ice cream that they had that day. I'd say my favorite was the Mocha/Coffee one. I'd wait a little bit before eating in the winter -- they're very cold and if you have two in a short time, you'll feel the freeze in your teeth. Good desert after a dinner in Little Tokyo.
Fresh made mochi ice cream in 15 different flavors! The boys love to stop by here when we are in little Tokyo, mochi ice cream for a buck fifty
Nice staff. Pretty good ice cream but the flavors of ice cream in the mochi are very light
The Mochi was delicious and very affordable! Only $1.5 for each! They also have ice cream.
We stopped and tried the salted caramel, cookies and cream, matcha green tea, coffee, and mint chocolate chip flavored mochi ice cream bites. They were delicious!
Yum! The mochi here is so good. There are so many flavors to choose from. My favorite was Pistachio. The prices are very reasonable. Be sure to get some mochi when you're visiting Little Tokyo.
