Umami Ya Sushi

My first time there. I loved it!! The waiter sat down with me and my granddaughter and helped us pick what we wanted by answering all of our questions! He was polite, kind and patient!! Best waiter ever!! And this place has now turned me into a sushi lover!! It was delicious and the plate was beautiful!! If you haven't tried it, you should!!

The food deserves 5 stars. The chef behind the bar is an artist. His presentation is always meticulous and the food is always fresh and delicious. This is by far the best sushi bar in town. Yes, the sushi comes out slow, but it is well worth the wait. The wait staff gets a mixed review. Some of the staff are very pleasant and attentive. Some of the staff is not. We have been turned away on more than one occasion because the waitress felt overwhelmed. All I can say is that if you are turning away business in this economy, you are setting yourself up for failure. The owner should try to invest in staff that can handle volume and that take pride in the excellent product being served and kick those mediocre dead weights to the curb.

Food was great but BEWARE! I ordered rolls and they came cut up like in every other sushi restaurant that I have been to in California and Minnesota. Unfortunately they charged me several dollars more per roll because they were cut up!! I was surprised and questioned them. But the waitress said it was because they were cut up!!! I had expected a bill about $12 plus tax but my total came to $18.30. I was shocked! Paid it but she didn't get the tip that I would have given her which was 5$ so instead she got $1.70!

Wonderful experience last night at Umami Ya. Party of 7 with some of our family visiting from out of town. Fun, welcoming environment. Stand out favorites on rolls: Lompoc Fiesta, Jalama and Lemon Tree. Everything was excellent from cucumber salad to start to mochi and all the rolls in between! We had never been before this visit - we've found our new sushi spot!! Oh, and we had 2 different servers and they were both great and extremely friendly! Thanks Umami Ya for a wonderful experience for us and our family visiting from Michigan! We'll all be back.
