Yes, Wagon Bones did have some issues to resolve upon opening years ago, but in our experience, it has become better with age. The service can be hit or miss, and parking can be frustrating, but when it comes to BBQ in Lexington, this is one of our go-to spots.
We most recently had Wagon Bones while visiting the farmers' market downtown. We ordered pulled-pork sandwiches, which were simply wrapped in aluminum foil, with no sauce necessary. The pork was juicy, smoky and tender, and was some of the best that I have had in Lexington. Wagon Bones uses a Western KY spin dry rub and its meats are smoked over an open fire pit for hours to create that crispy crust and smoky flavor. Wagon Bones also has two homemade sauces - a tangy, semi-sweet BBQ sauce and a Western KY dip sauce.
I have also tried its mayo-based potato salad, which was flavorful, and its tasty greens, which were cooked with onions and moist. All sides are made from scratch.
If you have had a negative experience in the past, then I would recommend visiting at least one more time.
BBQ To-Go. They had my order ready on-time. 1 lb. of Pork, 1 lb. of Chicken, Mac & Cheese, and Cole Slaw! Everything was amazing and we all loved it! I've also had their brisket which is outstanding too.
Really Good Sandwich & Staff. I just visited Lexington this weekend and while driving by noticed Wagon Bones Grill. My fiancee and I tried the chicken and brisket sandwiches. Both were good. I had the brisket and it was exceptional. It was very tender and the sauce was good. My only real critique would be that th sandwich could have been larger. Never the less, it was a great sandwich. As a real beef lover if I'm ever in Lexington again, I'll be visiting Wagon Bones. By the way, they also have an outstanding chowder. They offered a sample which was really good.
I was visiting Lexington from Wisconsin and stopped in for lunch. The staff was incredibly friendly and I felt welcomed when I walked in the door. The food was delicious! I travel a lot and I have to say this was one of the best bbq joints I have encountered. The brisket was tender. The mac and cheese was so yummy! The blackberry cobbler was so good! It was totally comfort food that made my tummy smile! Great prices, great food and great staff! I will be back!!
Excellent BBQ - larger portions would be appreciated but food tastes excellent. Recommended for a quick bite to eat. No beer offered at this time.
Great BBQ!. Wagon Bones Grill has a limited menu, but what they do have to serve up is phenomenal. The staff is extremely friendly and the restaurant has a homey feel to it. I would highly recommended this establishment to anyone.
I effs with this BBQ! As a massive barbecue snob, I ordered from this place with a critical mind. The food, all around (chicken, brisket, hot links, sides, EVERYTHING!) was fantastic. The sauce is sweet and tangy, the meats smokey, tender and moist. This spot is great.
It was kinda busy. Only one lady working. Bbq is simple. Not quite smokey enough for my taste. Sauce was good.
Good, fast and friendly. I tried the Wagon Bones Grill with a couple of co-workers for lunch today and it was quite good. I had the pulled pork sandwich with a side of potato salad. The sandwich had large chunks of pulled pork on it, which can sometimes indicate dryness. However this meat was moist and tasty. The sauce did not overpower it and was also good (a good thing when you don't get to choose your sauce). The potato salad was just so so ... it was a little too mayonnaise-y for my taste. The size was also very tiny for the $2 price tag associated with it. The service was very fast and friendly. I would definitely go back!
Good BBQ addition to Jefferson Street!. My wife and I tried Wagon Bones last week and were very impressed by the food and friendly family who runs the place. We had the ribs and the brisket and both were very tasty. The portions are great and the sides are delicious. The staff consists of family members and that results in a warm, home-like feel. We will go back!
