Came here because a friend of mine highly recommended this place & this place did not disappoint. =) Used a Groupon deal to get a great deal (because I love deals, who doesn't?? =) Ordered: Red Snapper (Grilled): 4.5 stars Great tasting w/ yummy seasoning but was a bit salty. Mac & Cheese: 4 stars Cheesey & heavy but still yummy Mashed potatoes: 4 stars So delicious but so filling. Catfish (fried): 4 stars Batter wasn't overly thick & it was a good sized ratio of fish to batter. Unlike some places where they have so much batter that you wonder where did all the fish go? Service: A+ Very helpful & nice; if it's you're 1st time here they are more than happy to help you. Atmosphere/ Ambiance: D Very small place with a couple of chairs right next to the counter. They need to put some windows/ ventilation in here because it can get very hot & stuffy in here because there's no section diving the cooking area from the front area. Overall: A If you don't mind the plain & simple surroundings but care more about your food, then come here to support the mom & pop small businesses. =)

This is a beautiful place staffed with beautiful people serving beautiful food. I came across it by accident while shopping for a car in the neighborhood. I was surprised at the breadth of the menu...oxtails. gumbo, and so on along with the usual soul food fare. Sometimes in a small restaurant these things are on the menu but they are "out." Not at Dirty South. I ordered the gumbo. It was prepared just right. The seasoning complemented the ingredients rather than overwhelming it. Ditto for the cornbread. Not too dry, not too gooey. On subsequent visits I have had the wings, collard greens, baked mac, black-eyed peas, red beans and rice. The wings were done less well than I like, but this would be easy to fix, and worth it, since the batter they use makes for an appealing treat. To me, the decor was perfect. Modest, clean, funny signs and warm messages on the wall, nice music from the boombox. Knock on bathroom door before you walk in. It was also educational. I learned to order a Muddy Water rather than an Arnold Palmer. The staff was professional, warm, and attractive. Everything about this place is authentic and tasteful.
