Off the beaten path and not well lit outside, but what a great place. Great food, especially BBQ, at a remarkably low price. Staff was so polite and attentive, I felt like I was at my grandmother's. Buffet style dining is normally not my thing, but I loved this place. If you get a chance to go here, please do yourself a favor and do it.
Stopped for lunch on way home from beach and loved it! Only lunch option was the buffet. Enjoyed all meat and veggie items. When I saw the fried fatback on the buffet, I knew I was at my kind of place.
This place was AWESOME!!! Atmosphere, food, people everything! Will definitely go back!!!!
Best BBQ EVER!. General McArthur's has the best BBQ in the world, in my Carolina opinion. The meat is lean and tender. In the Carolina tradition, you add your own sauce as you eat it. The meat is cooked with that great vinegar based "sauce" (which is more like a marinade) that I have only found in the Scotland county area. The buffet includes everything from green beans to turnip greens, from cole slaw to fat back, from corn bread (fried) to white rolls, from peach cobbler to banana pudding. Who needs labels for that?
If you haven't tried General McArthur's, you haven't eaten North Carolina BBQ at its best.
It's a drive-through service now. The food is good. The barbecue was ok. It was not as tasty as it was years ago. The butter beans, cornbread fritter, fried chicken, and corn were delicious. People are friendly.
Delicious food and the General is real friendly. Drive up with a few outdoor picnic tables
That's where I get my fat back grease and fresh fat back. Thats how you season good food!
This was my first time eating here. The food was delicious. The chicken was one of my favorites. This is buffet style with lots to chose from. Friendly staff. Got plenty of refills on my tea. And I loved the fact that they kept the buffet clean and tidy. I watched the lady wipe down the buffet many times while I was there. I like that. I look forward to going back here soon. Great family place with great country cooking.
They have a small country buffet compared to larger restaurants, but the food is usually delicious. Fried chicken, fried fish, BBQ, corn, greens, fat back, cornbread, sweet potato casserole, etc... They also have a salad bar and desserts. Their lemonade is wonderful!! Friendly service. Their price is rather steep, though.
Good BBQ. Chopped and my favorite pulled. And the sauce is the best. I buy it by the bottle. It's a buffet and on the expensive side especially if you add tea. Good country home food cooking. You can also get take out which they charge by the pound as most buffets do. On Sundays they usually have home made dressing that is pretty close to the way my Mom made it.
Edit: 9/3/19 Sadly General McArthurs burned and is now closed until further notice.
A wonderful place to get good comfort foods and service with a smile. Love the people, the food and the consistency. We went for Thanksgiving brunch and had a wonderful experience on what was sure to be a little overwhelming for the restaurant. They are top notch!
Had a nice variety of soul food. Also reminded me of mamma cooking. When I'm in town always have to get banana pudding to go. It's a all you can eat buffet at a reasonable price.
Friendly and welcoming staff even on a heavy feeding day like Mother's Day. Food was country cooked and I thank the cooks when they bring out the foods. The cooking staff keep the hot food hot and consistently refill the buffer bar. Today General MacArthur had fish, shrimp, his homemade BBQ and stew beef and rice. DELICIOUS. LIKE MY LATE MOTHER-IN-LAW (Rachel Benson) USED TO TELL ME, it is a holiday and a blessing any day she didn't have to scrape the plates, sweep the floors and wash dishes! General MacArthur 's staff remind me of that late great woman's comforting kitchen. Thank you.
I grew up on family Sunday dinners here! Love the staff. Very polite. Good country food & they offer seafood. Buffet style.
More Southern-style home cooking here than you can eat! Friendly staff, too. Lots of quirky decor, which I always enjoy in a restaurant.
Delicious home style southern food. They even have sliced tomatoes to top my veggies with. The staff is friendly and the price is reasonable.
Great food. Good variety. Very popular place!
We learned of this place from a friend who stops here on the way to the beach. We looked it up and decided to stop. It's a little off the Laurinburg exit, near St. Andrews University. An unpretentious place in the midst of farmland, it serves up a terrific buffet. This day featured such foods as fired chicken, fried fish, shrimp, chicken and gravy, cabbage, green beans, limas, collards, yams, corn bread, salad bar, banana pudding, strawberry shortcake, cobblers, ice cream bar...and for a special treat for some, fried fatback. I couldn't eat like this often but it does bring to mind my Mama's table. ❤️
Best BBQ in Carolina. Period.
Good people, great food.. Legendary.
The General and Young General Brent are indeed BBQ legends and the best people around.
Always great visit here, "The General" owner Colon McArthur knows how to do buffet, spacious serving area, lots of choices, plenty of room to navigate with a plate of outstanding food back to your table.
Food was outstanding! Great southern fried chicken and wonderful pulled pork! Staff is very friendly and prompt! With the side trip!
