Went on a Saturday at noon and the service was great. Food came out quick and got a table no problem. St. Louis Ribs were delicious and the bbq sauces were great that I had (Sweet & Tangy and Spicy). Overall, a great experience and would be happy to come back again when I'm in the area on a trip.

I had to edit my rating - it used to be five stars. I love South Street's food, but now they are always closed by the time I get off work. It's so disappointing - we ate there all the time. They have the BEST smoked chicken quarters, I really miss them.

After going to South Street for years, we were curious about the new City BBQ, so we tried it for lunch today. South Street is so much better, we'll be back! To those who say they are never open, it only takes a quick call to check their hours, which are listed on their answering machine. They are a small business. Don't expect them to always be open.

I love South Street. It is so nice to be able to come back and eat here again after they had to close for so long. The food is still delicious and the bbq sauce is as remembered. I had missed this place but will be back over and over

Stopped here after a coworker recommended it. I had the rib tips with three of their sauces on the side. The tips were decent (a little dry)but the sauces were very underwhelming. The overall experience? Meh.

Have always loved coming to The Smokehouse for the Kansas City But unfortunately after today i don't think we will be back for awhile, the brisket was so dry and had no taste I truly hope they work on this because it was awful

People recommended this BBQ joint to us. It's kinda a hole in the wall and that's a good thing. The brisket that I had was really, really good, but the sides were a little bland (Mac n Cheese and Greens). My friend loved the ribs. I would eat here again.

Love BBQ. Closer to closing thou they have run out of items, but that just tells u how good it is!!!

Amazing ribs - smoked to perfection. The best St. Louis ribs we've tasted. The ribs were juicy, meaty, and perfectly smoked. The sides of cornbread, chili, coleslaw and greens were perfect pairings to making this one of our favorite places to visit. Mouthwatering ribs and makes you stop to take in the taste and flavor. Clean establishment and friendly service. Only wish they were opened 7 days a week!

Above average barbecue. Lousy service. <br/><br/>It's not that everyone working there was awful. On the contrary almost everyone there seemed wonderful. The only guy who seemed to hate being there and hate is for being there was the guy who actually takes your order. <br/><br/>The catfish was nothing special. I'm pretty sure it was GFS bought, or cooked to look that way. <br/><br/>The barbecue was very good. Not holy mother of cow I need to come here now good, but it is some of the best in town.

Just finished up a spot of lunch from the South Street Smokehouse. Needed to make this take-away (aka "to-go").<br/><br/>Wanted a good sampling of their offerings, so we grabbed a 3 Meat Dinner with Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chicken - Collard Greens and Mac & Cheese as the sides. Had several to feed, so we grabbed an additional 2 Meat Dinner with some more Brisket and Pulled Pork - Collard Greens and Cornbread. I noticed 3 large jugs of sauce on the counter, so I filled up 3 plastic cups... one of each: Original, Tangy & Sweet, and Hot.<br/><br/>Chatted with one of the line servers while they took care of a couple other orders. Their Ole Hickory Smoker usually runs with hickory, but they'll occasionally use apple for a pork loin. The place seems very popular with locals, as we wouldn't have been able to sit down in the 20-30 seats.<br/><br/>Rather a nice spread of food when we got it all out. Very reasonable portion sizes for the price.<br/><br/>Meats:<br/>Brisket - Had read good things about their brisket on TripAdvisor or some such place. Appeared brown with some sort of bark formation. Was cooked 'till tender, but I think it went "over the top" while in holding... loosing much of the moisture content. Sadly, I didn't get much rub or spice from the bark, and just some general smoke flavor from the meat.<br/><br/>Pulled Chicken - Didn't expect the chicken to be pulled, to be honest. Was in little bits... closer to chopped. Rather dry meat (mainly white meat) with a sweeter finishing sauce that didn't do much for the flavor. Not much smoke flavor or spice rub to be had.<br/><br/>Pulled Pork - Retained moisture much better than the chicken. Finishing sauce had a bit more pepper and perhaps some other spices... gave better flavor. Still no bark or discernible smoke ring.<br/><br/>Sides:<br/>Collard Greens - Nicely made. Little vinegar twang to 'em. Some ham hock or some such would've been a nice surprise.<br/>Mac & Cheese - Appeared to be industrial... more food service style. Father-In-Law liked it.<br/>Cornbread - Just about the star of the show. Very tasty stuff with bits of corn kernel baked in. Good texture and flavor.<br/><br/>Sauces: Very tomato-based stuff.<br/>Mild / Original - Little bit of vinegar twang. Some sweetness and some spices. "Mild" is a good word for it.<br/>"Tangy & Sweet" (or something like that) - This was our favorite. A great deal more interesting stuff going on here. More spices (heavy on the black pepper). Bit thinner than Mild... not sure where they got the sweet part of the description.<br/>Hot - Can't exactly call this spicy by any stretch. Tastes like they just took the Mild and threw in some red pepper flakes or some cayenne.<br/><br/>Bottom Line:<br/>I was excited to find this place and to read the reviews online. I really wanted to enjoy this meal. We sure didn't have all of the offerings on the menu. Their ribs (Tips, St. Louis Spares, and Baby Backs all on offer) look like a viable option.<br/><br/>I'm not sure I could recommend that this place to the rest of you, which pains me. I'd like to think that they just had "an off day."

If you want dried up, tasteless pieces of meat to which you can add sauces with differing amounts of heat but all tasting the same, this is the place for you.

Best brisket we've found.. South Street Smokehouse appears to be a hole in the wall, but the food is fabulous and the employees are very friendly. We've been trying brisket at other bbq places in the midwest, but haven't found anything that comes remotely close. The rest of the food is good too, but the brisket really stands out.

BBQ lover!. I've eaten BBQ in S. and N. Carolina, Memphis, Texas, Alabama, Georgia. Just about everywhere I've been. I've eaten here twice. The pulled pork was dry and the sauces all had a funny taste to them so chose the one that tasted the most mustardy (don't remember the name since it wasn't that impressive). Neither time that I've been did the meat have much of a flavor of smoke. I ate BBQ at D & R last Sunday. What a huge difference! I could take the smoke in the pulled pork and the rub was delicious. But, I did come home and put my own favorite sauce on it (Johnny Harris from Savannah, GA). Won't go back to South Street now that I've found D and R.

To The Picky Few, Great BBQ!. As I read the bad reviews about greasy food, strange smells, and stone faced service; your missing a few points here. They built the place from scratch, and after years of success, their a little burned out. BBQ dive? Yes, it's exactly that like all the other great shacks that I have visited throughout the country, it will have it own style of flavors, smells, and sides. Best not be too picky and enjoy the offerings (and yes they do smoke the meat) Here's a tip, try to bring a smile to them. Pass the napkins!

DISAPPOINTING. We have visited twice now. We were disappointed the first time with overall cleanliness of the restaurant and the mediocre BBQ. Wish we hadn't bothered to give them a second try. Stew was more like canned soup and cornbread was so greasy. Both went into the trash.

I had high hopes for this place but was denied. Food is ok but doesn't make up for the rudeness of the staff. When I inquired the price of an item (half the price had been wiped off the white board) the response came as if they couldn't be bothered. Flavors were just ok (as I said before). The sauces were interesting but the overall experience was not enough to make me want to subject myself to a business that seemed to not care.

It's all good!. My only suggestion is go early if you are picky about what you order. We went late in the evening and 1/3 of the menu items were sold out. My first two choices sold out while I was waiting in line but my third selection led me to some of the best ribs I've ever tasted. Don't go without trying the cornbread either. I will definitely be back!

I'll be back in the spring. On a golf trip to Kentucky last Nov., We had an opportunity to stop here. If your going for ambience, this is not the place. This is more on the side of a dive. But a great dive. I love BBQ sausage, and was served one of the better ones here (wasnt on the menu, but he made an order for me). Don't know what seasoning they put on their fries, but they were some of the best I've had in a long time. The rest of our group really enjoyed their brisket and pork. BBQ comes in many forms, find something you like at one place and hate the same order at a different place. That's why there's so many styles of BBQ. <br/>My first thought, "Just Honest" must have been a competitor and not a realistic opinion. I've also experienced some of the best reviews (Good & Bad) from visitors that came from long distances. Strictly MY opinion, but in doing my research for the 35+ golf day dinners a year for the last 7 years, my group. have experienced very few hiccups. Thanks Urbanspoon & its many followers.

VILE!. I would rather jump off the Empire State Building and land on a bicycle with the seat missing than eat this garbage again! Customer service stinks too! Stinks about as bad as the cigarette smoke from the cooks and other workers in the back preparing food . Makes okay dog food though :)

Some of the best barbecue and sauces I've ever tasted! A must go!

I've been several times and it's just ok. Everything I have tried has been decent but not great. Service is good and the people are friendly though!

Good Sandwich. They make a good beef brisket sandwich. Fried pickles were good, the side of baked beans was a little on the small side. Great cornbread though.
Eric
Not impressed. I had beef and chicken plate and both seemed tough and dry. the sauces also had a weird taste. the biggest dissapointment were the sides. the chili was literally nothing but huge chunks of tomato. Once I took them all out there was only 2 botes of actual chili. Potato salad was nothing but super sour pickles.

Not the best in Lafayette. My husband and I frequented there for awhile, when it was really the only BBQ joint in Lafayette. I was always irked by the service. Their staff isn't friendly and welcoming, and mostly act like you are bothering them by coming in to eat. <br/><br/>D & R on Creasy & 26 showed up, and we began to be able to get good, tasty, friendly BBQ again. :) They always smile, the food is always top notch, and I adore going to spend my money somewhere people seem to appreciate it. D & R BBQ for my money.

Awesome food

Not even close to good Texas 'que.

I loved eating here.I come there often.

Have some good beef tips. I also had the white meet chicken sadly this was overly dry. Overall a good meal for the price.

Huge portions, needs more smoke. On our way from Chattanooga to Wisconsin, we stopped in Lafayette for the night and decided to sample the local fare. South Street Smokehouse looked promising so we went. Got a full order of rib ends, corn, fries and beans to split between two. We ate to satiety and still have enough meaty ends for an entire meal! The ends were very good, another hour in the smoker would have made them great. The meat needed more smoke flavor for my taste. The sides were good, except the beans, which were exceptional! Also, the cleanliness could have been better. The floor needed a good mopping, but it wouldn't keep me from eating there again.

Smokehouse...where's the smoke?. I am a big fan of barbecue and smoked meats, and the product quality at South Street Smokehouse is poor at best. The brisket is always dry and virtually smokeless, the pulled pork is nothing great (and if it is supposed to be smoked...yeah?) . It looks like Blaze inside White Castle might be the best and most consistent barbecue place in Lafayette, and I try to support local business as much as possible.<br/><br/>Oh, just a heads up--if you are ordering to-go, make sure you check your order before you leave, otherwise you will get home to find your order is WRONG!
Brian Olehy
I have had much better but OK for Lafayette. The Que is ok here but the rub seems to be inconsistent. I don't like lots of sauce on my stuff but a little is nice. They don't have any sauce I can stand. I think this place has a bit of a Carolina slant but it needs to focus that in a little to define their meat. <br/>Service can also be a little lax. They never greet you with a smile & rarely say "thanks". It seems like the staff would be happier if they didn't have to serve you and could just stand around and play grab ass. If people want to eat here, I'll go but I would never choose this and I love BBQ.

Best BBQ anywhere. This is a long time favorite of ours. You definitly get your money's worth here. Any of the pulled meat sandwhiches are great and more than you can eat! Each one uses a different sauce to staisfy everyone. Lots of sauces in pump bottles to try if you want more. If you are an onion ring lover, you must try them here! Simply the best.

Will give you cornbread withdrawl..... I need to make a trip back, the only problem is, they have good days with the bread, and they have the bad. But even on the bad its still great corn bread. Its just not the amazing wonderful bread of my dreams... <br/><br/>But I digress... The bread is good, but their meat is better. Wonderful, amazing stuff!!

Just stopped by on our way back from Chicago thanks to Urban Spoon. Great food, cool atmosphere and great prices to boot. Highly recommended!!

LOVE THE SOUTH STREET SMOKEHOUSE!. This casual spot is friendly and has the most delish BBQ! ALWAYS get the greens as a side. GOOD cornbread! Great people. It would be nice to have them add a few nice microbrewed beers.
Stephanie
LOVE IT.. Our family eats here all the time and never get tired of it! We have tried BBQ places all over the country, and my husband is from the South, and we just love it! We love the ribs tips, brisket sandwiches, fried pickles and homemade ranch dressing!! (wish they'd give me the recipe).

Best BBQ in town and it is so reasonably priced. Awesome fries and brisket sandwiches!

South Street Smokehouse is incredible, and the prices are very low. As a poor college student, you get very full with good for very little.

Restaurant Reviews: South Street Smoke House (Lafayette, IN The “word” on this place was they had legendary BBQ and had been open for longer than anyone can remember. Well, the part about how long they have been open may very well be true, the BBQ told a different tale. Staff was unfriendly to say the least, When i asked about their food they would not recommend anything just said ” its all pretty good” in an almost rude tone. If you go to restaurants for ambiance this is not the place for you. More of a dive feel than a full blown restaurant. First hey have a wide array of sauces to choose from, and for the life of me I could not find a single one that I actually liked. They were either to vinegary to to sweet to thick or to thin etc.. none of them tasted like what I call a true BBQ sauce. As for the BBQ itself: I had beef and chicken plate and both seemed tough and dry. (Maybe it was warmed up BBQ left over from the day before?) As mentioned before the sauces also had a weird taste.

I would recommend South Street Smokehouse if you’re looking to get some good barbecue flavors in town. It’s a very reasonable price, and the flavors of the food definitely speak for themself.
Lafayette Eats
The South Street Smokehouse is a nice barbeque joint which I believe is locally owned and operated. It’s not too fancy — what with the paper towel dispensers instead of napkins, bench seating, baskets, and plastic cutlery; but that’s perfect for a smokeho
