One of my favorite places to meet friends for appetizers and drinks..
Food was good, service was okay but the view is worth waiting for.
Tiki cute decor. Original Mai tai was a tasty classic. Appetizer sampler was yummy, especially the crab cake. Our service was not so good but it didn't detract from the sunset view and tropical ambiance.
Best breakfast buffet found.. Went twice for the morning breakfast buffet and was very pleased with the quality, selection, and content. Service was good, coffee was great, and the table on the rocks above the sea was remarkable.
Perhaps a tad pricey but you get a lot and I didn't get in trouble for going back for more. I didn't do lunch or dinner so this just for the breakfast.
Mai Tai Heaven. You have to go just to try the Mai Tai, but the food is also very reliable. Nothing risky or blow your socks off great, but very respectable.
Mai Tai Bar. We just stopped by for Mai Tais our first night in Hawaii. The bar is comfortable and large and the view was fantastic. The Mai Tais were top notch and happy hour prices were reasonable. The service was slooow though. It might have been thekitchen & not our waitress..not sure. At any rate our 'tiki chips' weren't hot & took forever. Meanwhile we enjoyed ourselves...
What's not to like. WOW.. the view.. the view.. the view..
And the food, the food, the food..
We ate here 3x and each time the waitstaff were prompt and charming. The food consistently good. The Mai Tais to die for.. and the sunsets.. oh ya.
We had the Ono tacos.. delish, fresh fish, goog portions.
Pricey , but good . the food was very good and so was the survive . Just most people can not afford to come there every night . PS make resovations .
Today was our last full day in Hawai'i, so we treated ourselves to a nice meal at our hotel. It started with some rolls and butter, and some fresh pineapple. I got the ahi furikake, which was beautiful and delicious. It rested on a bed of coconut rice, su
We didn’t think the food would live up to the wonderful oceanfront view, but boy were we wrong. All our dishes were fantastic! We tried the big sushi/poke plate, fish tacos, shrimp salad, giant calamari, and sweet potato fries. Absolutely delicious!! BTW - Mai Tai’s and drinks were bomb!
Relaxed, casual waterfront dining. Food and service was great. Our waitress, Jessica, was wonderful and took good care of us.
We had Calamari Fritte, Tiger Eye Sushi (Ahi) Tempura Roll, and Seafood Corn Chowder with a Mai Tai Taster. The calamari is thick slices of calamari steak and not rings. Lightly breaded and tender, we really enjoyed it. The tempura sushi roll has a fairly small amount of ahi, but the favors were well balanced and it tasted great. The chowder is thick and chunky and not overly fishy tasting. We would get it again.
We ended our meal with the Royal Mud Pie. Awesome and plenty to share for two people.
The location was prefect to watch the beautiful sunset in Kailua-Kona. We highly recommend eating at Don the Beachcomber.
Absolutely amazing place to eat and the scenery is incredible. Service is friendly and attentive as well. We came here for our honeymoon (staying at Royal Kona Resort) and we came to this restaurant multiple times (going back for our last dinner out here tonight). Tip: You have to try the poke nachos, trust me...they're something special. Whenever we make it out again, we will definitely come back. Mahalo!

We had the most wonderful time at Don's when we stayed at the Royal Kona Resort!!!!! Service was incredible, and everyone was so friendly. George was a great bartender, Lehani and Cora were lovely as well. Thank you so much for every single beautiful day we spent there! Outstanding service, delicious food, and festive cocktails!!! I think we tried almost every single drink on the menu. The calamari was delicious, and we loved the loco Moco. Splurge for the Pi Yi!!!! (It's the cute pineapple drink!)
Another fave stop when visiting Kona. We always enjoy the live music nights but MANY MANY others do too. If the crowds are not your scene, stop by any other early evening for happy hour and a sunset. Not to be missed. Service is great, food is good and the atmosphere is holiday magic. Have a mai tai!
Inside Royal Kona Resort. Try Don's Mai Tai bar. Open seating. Fantastic views, great music (albeit from a CD) ...and hands down: best Mai Tais in town. For happy hour, try the coconut shrimp. We also ordered the cheeseburger, mahi taco & fishwich. All really good! Had the Lava Torte for dessert. Tastey, but the lava flowed more from the top than the middle, but really, that happens a lot with this type of dessert... would probably prefer again but a la mode (doesn't come with ice cream). They validate parking ticket from the parking lot of the Royal Kona resort if you buy drink/food (validation good for up to 2 hours). If you're handicapped and have a placard, there's a few free handicapped parking spots in the roundabout right in front of the Royal Kona Resort (where the valet guy is). We were there for Happy Hour & sunset and even caught a glimpse of their luau (on a Wednesday). We tried going there again Thursday night but the place was packed early due to some type of event. Several tables were reserved, which was different from the day before where it was all open seating. May try again tomorrow. The Mai Tais there are worth every effort!
We love this place. Friendly staff and have always met lots of great people here! It provides a cool breeze and relaxing atmosphere. Food is great, as are the drinks.
I really nice place to have a happy hour drink and watch the sun set. 💜
Fun outdoor beach resort vibe, the menu has a decent variety of local dishes, the drinks were well made and come out quick. The portion size for most menu items are above average and are reasonably priced for the quantity you receive. Additionally, this philly steak burger was the best thing I’ve ever had in my entire life. I hope it stays on the menu because I look forward to coming back time and time again just to order this.
Three years ago, I ordered a tasting flight of so-called mai tais. Tonight I ordered a proper 1947 Mai Tai. Please don’t futz up like I did and make sure you get the OG.
Unless you like fruity nonsense, if so, go ham you animals!
The Mai Tai’s here are top notch. The prime rib was unexpectedly the best I’ve ever had and the ultimate poke bowl was a treat.
Could be better for true tikiphiles but alas the drinks I had were pretty good. Needs a more expansive menu if they are going to use Don's name and his rhum rhapsodies...
Beautiful bar with great views of the bay (weather permitting of course). The Mai Tai is the way to go. $6 during their happy hour. The Pele Mai Tai was also good if your looking for something with a good kick. Their blended drink was a great last drink for the night, not overly sweet but desert like. Wouldn't recommend the Kona Itch, tasted almost wholy of alcohol rather than any flavor.
If you're staying at the hotel you can order your drink in a plastic cup to take to the pool or to take up to your room.
The food was fine, typical bar food with a Hawaiian kick. We had much faster service ordering from the bar directly rather than a server.
We have breakfast here each morning. The coffee is amazing. The view, service and food are equally amazing. The hash browns are a must!
A super fun place to get some cocktails and watch the sunset. Really packed, but service was quick! Cocktails were tasty too. Didn’t eat but food looked delicious and portions were good sized.
Food excellent evening staff very attentive. Morning staff less than attentive. Had ask for refill on coffee, and after we got check no ne would take our bill, and let us pay, not the bar tende even, finally another server did finally after checking with our original server. No tip , first time we never Tipped, ps former Steakhouse owners.
We must have come on a night where it was very busy because the service was a little slow but our waitress was very nice and understanding. To eat, I had the specialty salad with pineapple, papaya, and avocado. The truffle chicken was also very good.
Can't beat the unobstructed views, great atmosphere, better than average bar food (some days amazing, others ok) always great drinks. Service can be a little on the slow side when busy, but why would you be in a hurry sitting here?
