I saw a news article where a drunk guy who was looking for food tried to rob the tip jar from Pel'Meni a couple of days ago. He was stopped by a customer and the tip jar was retrieved from him.
“We’re pretty forgiving,” Moore said. “We understand that s**t happens sometimes. He didn’t hurt anybody. He didn’t fight Chris. We got our tip jar back. There was no point in drawing it out any longer.”
I really liked that response. Not saying that everyone that does this should be allowed to walk but sounds like these guys showed compassion. I'm visiting Juneau (on a cruise) 30 Aug 2015 and I'm definitely gonna stop and eat there.
Affordable and filling. I eat Pel's when I get a craving for it --- which is sometimes after bar close. I think the only people who wouldn't like it would be those averse to trying new things or who are senstive to any real flavor. That's right. You're vanilla and boring. Or you have a weak stomach. I feel bad for you:(
Despite their recent problems with health inspectors, I still consider Pel' Meni's to be the best grub joint in Juneau. The dumplings are always cooked to perfection in scalding hot water... no fear of any food born illness, that's for sure! The eclectic ambiance is what makes the place so great... the hippy cooks, the low ceiling, the mis-matched table and chairs, the huge collection of vinyl you get to spin on a real turntable!! The place is awesome!
Great food.. As mentioned elsewhere, Pel'meni is a one-trick pony. You get Siberian Pel'meni and bread. They are served either in the classic style (with sour cream and butter) or "curried" with curry powder and cilantro.
You can't go wrong either way.
This little hole in the wall place is absolutely worth a stop if you're in the area. Keep an eye out, it's easy to miss it!

It's cheap and it's amazingly tasty food. Love the spices!

I have never left a review for anything in my life. I created an account for the sole purpose of leaving this review. This is the best thing I have ever tasted in my entire life. I traveled across the country for the scenery of Juneau, and plan on doing it again only to experience Pel Meni. Highlight of my trip to Juneau. From the music selection, to the workers, nothing could possibly be better. Too old to explore the world, too young to explore the galaxy, born just in time to experience the magnificence that is Pel Meni.
An absolute must-do! If you are craving hot spice and tang gravy with potato dumplings on a rainy day in Juneau. How can you go wrong with this? For Indians who like the flavor intensity, the potato dumpling taste is comparable to aloo chat found in select street stalls in India. 5/5!
We found this was one of the only restaurants open when we arrived at our hotel so late in the evening. Located across the street from the Four Points Sheraton, we weren't sure what to expect, but I asked the chef for the local favorite. Beef or potato dumplings, we ordered a bowl of each and I'd happily eat here again.
Fantastic food. These dumplings taste great and they are reasonably priced. A seriously good cheap eat that I'd recommend to anyone. Get them with all the fixings.
Dumplings were fantastic and hit the spot, I'm pleased to say I'm still impressed ever since my first visit to Pels back in high school.
