Move over, Chipotle: there’s a new kid in town. Spice Runner, a global fusion concept developed by father and son duo Julius and Barry Fourie, offers a wide range of flavorful yet health-conscious options that stand out in the fast-casual sphere. Barry Fourie, Co-Owner of Spice Runner. Spice Runner’s roots trace back to the development of a line of sauces inspired by the flavors Julius grew up cooking in South Africa, and the name Spice Runner was inspired by the global influence that threads itself throughout the menu. After selling the sauces through various channels—including a food truck—for several years, the duo finally opened their first storefront earlier this year in a strip right off of I-10 and are currently contemplating their next location (their sauces are still for sale at the restaurant).
This food is definitely authentic South African food, I have been to South Africa and this food truck reminds me of those days when I use to go there to visit my friends.
Delicious and Different. I got their African curry sandwich and it was delicious. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu.
South African Spiced Braise was delicious. Meat and potatoes with spice can never go wrong.
Like the ribs, Loved the mango jicama slaw. So a few reviews on the ribs. Yes they are good, yes I enjoyed them. I had a couple that were a bit crispier than I wanted, but the flavor was all there, and they were fall off the bone. But the true standout since I was new to the flavor was the mango jicama slaw. the fruit was julienned very thinly and marinated in citrus and lime. Had a great light flavor that complemented and did not overpower the ribs at all. Very good service and good price point for this dish. Looking forward to trying more from spice runner.
Excellent ribs! They came with a side of mango slaw which was perfect with the slightly sweet and spicy ribs.
If you haven't had their ribs, then you don't know what you're missing!! OMG, they were the best ribs I've ever had and I don't even like ribs! They have amazing customer service and their prices are so reasonable. Follow them on Twitter @spice_runner to see what they're up to.
Whether you choose a pie or a sandwich, you can't go wrong at Spice Runner. The food is fresh and cooked perfectly, and the spices add a richness to the dishes without overpowering or masking the flavor of the food. The service is fast and friendly. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed. If I could eat here every day, I would.
So, despite the odd terminology, I really liked Spice Runner, and they were a strong follow-on to the wonderful kebabs I had a half hour before at Rickshaw Stop. Overall, they’ve got a great thing going here, and I’d love to come back and try more of their food.
The food was healthy with good portions and extremely tasty. The staff was nice. The menu is really flexible. The beef is tender and the flavors of the soup and bowls were excellent. Went there with two women who raved about the vegetable noodles they had.
I'm still forming an opinion of Spice Runner, so I might change this review later.
Biggest pro: classic English/SA/Australian meat pies. This is the first place so far that I have found them in Houston (I'm sure there might be others), but beyond offering them in store, they also offer 2 packs of frozen pies in-store.
The rice bowls/curries are also pretty good, but I felt lacked a little bit of service appearance. I would (and have) go back but need to try more of the menu before I can fully make up my mind.
Great food here. They have a decent selection of meat pies and other exotic dishes. Service here has always been outstanding.
Varied range of flavors, even have vegetable noodles for those avoiding carbs.
Delicious food for what it is and lots of healthy choices. All of the calories are clearly displayed on all the menus.
