Finally went to this place after having lived in the Houston area for almost 8 years. I'll say that the food is excellent - I had the best fish tacos since I was in California. Everything was really fresh - and the price was right. The place was neat and clean and the decor was bright and cheerful - with lots of old photos.
Every topping is $0.25, so if you want cheese, sour cream, or guacamole on your taco - it can run you an extra $0.75 per item.
It seems that they keep the soda and iced tea behind the counter, so I'm not sure if there are free refills.
Solid Cuban and tacos. This location is less crowded, and thus quicker, than the spot on Shepherd. Tacos from $2.35-2.75 and great plantains! Coffee is good. Staff is friendly and patient - the menu can be overwhelming. They serve breakfast, which is on my to-do list.
This is a good weekday lunch spot. I love the variety and size of the Tacos. I have not tried their plates yet. I figure that El Rey Taqueria's specialty is tacos. So far, I approve of all the tacos I have eaten there. The only thing to keep in mind at this location is that there is not much seating. If you are getting take out, no problem.
Great Cuban Tex Mex food, maybe best in Houston. All sorts of Cuban dishes and tacos. I haven't had a bad meal here yet. The Cuban coffee is pretty amazing as well. The building and parking is a little small but it is worth it.
I make my own breakfast tacos here and I came so often they started to remember my order. Plantains are great, tried to make myself but never able too. Staff is friendly and professional. Plenty of seating for groups and the back has extra parking.
As a Mexican-Cuban place, they do both pretty well - though the Mexican is generally better than the Cuban. For Cuban food, I recommend the steak sandwich over the cuban sandwich or the pork.
El Rey also has convenient hours, considering many places in the area are closed Sundays.
Why did it take this long for a Cuban fast food place? And these guys do it so well. They have a great Cubano sandwich, cafe Cubano, plantains, great ropa vieja, and other favorites. And you can get rotisserie chicken here after they stopped selling it at Taco Cabana. It is a TexMex fusion place too but the Cuban food is what I come for.
My favorite Mexican restaurant. The veggie tacos are amazing. You can make it vegan by ordering white rice and black or refried beans.
Always so good. Soup is fabulous. Not typical TexMex. It has the Cuban flavor, nice. Sevice quick. Drop by often for to-go, too
This place has tacos that are a little different from the usual Tex - Mex fare. The service is usually speedy although the drive thru lane can be difficult to maneuver into.
