Review Udipi Cafe - Houston

An ok place to have your quick lunch break. I was there for their lunch buffet. Nothing too crazy all the curry felt like just water added and not boiled with the spices in it. I didn’t get a vibe of returning back to this place for my lunch break ever even I am around this place. The food was just ok, not so worth it. The spices were not well cooked. I hope this place gets better and has a lot of potential growth for this place. I hope management takes over the responsibilities and looks closely on the buffet side.

I visited this place for lunch buffet along with two other non Indian individuals to let them taste South Indian Vegetarian food. Although it did not disappoint my friends, to me it appeared to be a diluted version of the typical South Indian dishes. I am not too sure dishes like malai kofta were included along with panner based North Indian curries. The rasam was too bad. I hope the owners stay focused on fewer but quality dishes served.

I stop here every time I visit Galveston- delicious north Karnataka flavors - Rasam and dosa are must try !

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this South Indian restaurant and I must say, the food was amazing! The onion masala dosa and butter masala dosa were both delicious and authentic, reminding me of my time in Bangalore. The portion size was very generous, and I was quite satisfied with just one dosa. I also tried their masala tea and filter coffee, which were both great. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at this restaurant and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for authentic South Indian cuisine.

I love the lunch buffet at this place. It is authentic south Indian (coastal Karnataka) menu for a reasonable price. The owner/staff are courteous and nice and the service is great. Food (buffet) is not great on Wednesdays. The rest of the days is awesome. Also, I wish they don't charge half-rate for kids (below 5).

Good place to have Udupi style food. We just had the Thali here, so not sure about the other food. They try to come close to the authentic Udupi taste and it’s good. My first, tasting Udupi food outside in the US, so it was nice, even though some of it was really off (like the cabbage fry also known as cabbage palya which tasted like Chinese food) and rice needed to be cooked a little more. Quantity of rice given for the amount of all the other dishes was less. The interior is good but small. Nice to see all the photos framed and put up all over which gives a glimpse of the Founder’s past. Service was good when we visited and we were even later checked upon to make sure all was good with us, which was also nice. The restroom needs an uplift as well as maintenance. There is good parking around as it is within the complex sharing space with other outlets.

First of all - don’t judge based on what it looks like on the outside! The inside is bright and airy with comfortable, clean seating. We had the manglorean bhajje as starters, and a masala dosa as well as an Express Thali - which came with a dosa, medu wada, Idli, Upma and sheera. Large portion sizes (not complaining about it 😅) meant we packed up most of the Upma and Sheera to go. The Medu Wada was crisp on the outside and soft within, idli was well steamed, and the accompanying chutneys were OK - the best one was the tomato chutney, while the coconut one was runny and not as flavorful. The sambar was fine too but the star was the rasam they served prior to the meal! The filling within the masala dosa was not sufficient and not very flavorful - a rather plain potato bhaji. If you want a taste of Udipi cuisine, go here for sure.

Authentic South Indian food like I have never had across the US. The place is a veritable VIP gallery of the likes of Anthony Bourdain, Dr. Abdul Kalam, AR Rehman, and many others. The buffet was the best vegetarian, south-Indian food I have had (again)! The Vadas and idlis were fresh and done just right. The sweet pongal was delicious and fresh as well. A must-visit place if you are looking for healthy, vegetarian food, though to some this may be carb-heavy!

Small place but worth the try! Thali was okay but they are known for their dosas which was to the mark!

Interesting atmosphere. The restaurant had pictures of the owner with a lot of Indian celebrities. The food was okay, but I felt it was a bit overpriced. The idli wasn't upto my expectation as compared to the restaurant in India.

I come here regularly enough and have come over a number of years. The food is reliably good. Their dosas are amazing and there is a wide variety of them. Overall, their menu is very diverse and every dish I've had here has tasted great. It's all vegetarian so no worry about potentially eating meat. It's also very inexpensive for the high quality of the food.

Good chances of getting fresh idli, when visited for breakfast on weekends. I got idlis for pickup multiple times here, of all they were good only when had at the restaurant at the time mentioned. Idlis here are similar to those of andhra idlis. Sambar was usual, i mean not sweet. The chutneys too were decent. Not a fan of Dosa though, felt a little like instant mix one. And finally the Mangalore bajji, they are the ones made with maida( these ones called mysore bajji in andhra).

So the service is ok. People are polite but can be a little absent minded! :) The Thali took a good 15 mins or more to arrive, but was clearly full of freshly prepared food so I don't care to complain about this. The curd rice had not enough rice and tempering, which I gave feedback about. The salt in the coconut curry and dry poriyal could have been added a little. The buttermilk was lovely (slightly less watery will be better). The spicy curry, daal, salad, poori and sambhar with rice was perfect and delicious. The sweet payasam was also perfect. I was scared reading some of the reviews. I do think there must be some truth to them. But I am glad the food and service was lovely today. I have been here a couple times before COVID and the food was good then too, though the owner a little arrogant and argumentative. The owner was not around today. I will visit again to try other menu items, especially want to try the dosa sometime.

Courteous staff. Very quick service and staff ensured everyone is attended. Meals, tiffin and chat items are good here. #HapoyDining
