Review Spanish Village Restaurant - Houston

Courtney Campbell
Vibe- This is a big colorful building on the outside and inside! I love the tables, they have a mosaic tile look and it gives me Spanish vibes for sure. There’s so many tables, I counted about 35-40 tables; some small and a few larger ones. Customer service- Great, the staff was very friendly and helpful! Food/drinks- I got chips and salsa to start, enchiladas with the beyond meat, and a side salad. I also ordered a mango margarita. Everything was delish! I specifically came here because I saw that they offer vegan options. There isn’t a printed menu but you can get tacos, a quesadilla, or nachos; mostly with beyond meat, lettuce, and tomatoes. Parking- I parked on the street where there was a sign saying no parking 4-6pm (I went around 2 pm). I could imagine parking being difficult at busy times

Everything had great flavor! The charro beans were the best. The drinks were fire. So good. The quesadilla was cheesy and filled with fajita meat. The fajita plate was awesome. We will definitely be back.

Visited recently and got the Sunbelt plate which was very good. They may have a new cook now because this was the best meal I got there in the last 10 years. The salsa there is more of just a hot sauce but even it was a little thicker which was a step up from the watery sauce before. I was impressed and satisfied. If they could get all the girls to come out of their gossip circle and watch the customers more they could probably get back on track again.

***REVIEW WAS FOR SPANISH/LITTLE VILLAGE BEFORE NEW OWNERSHIP REMOVED THE VEGAN MENU*** I love this place. The atmosphere is very inviting and the staff including the owner are so friendly and personable. The staff remembered me after my FIRST visit despite me getting a full hair-do change in between my first and second visits. The vegan menu here is amazing! I love breakfast tacos and the price for both quality and quantity is excellent. Every time I get the munchies late at night I crave their chorizo, just egg and potato tacos!! 😻 I’d like to address one of the only bad reviews here by a woman named Joy. She is largely known in the vegan community to be a horrible nag. It is a disappointment that a schoolteacher in Pasadena would be such a gross, disrespectful and entitled person towards our local vegan businesses, especially at one as pleasant as Spanish Village!

Unfortunately after 50 years, Spainish Village is going to be closing. The history of this restaurant reverberates from the walls and will be gap in neighborhood when their doors close officially. While working on 288, our team would routinely grab lunch here. The food was always good and the service always friendly.

I love that this place has a dedicated vegan menu in addition to their standard menu. There were many options that sounded appetizing so I had a hard time choosing. I went with the vegan Motherclucker burrito and it was delicious! I did wish it came with a sauce on the side but I liked that it wasn’t a standard burrito. My company got the 2 beef tacos with impossible meat (and regular cheese) and the vegan impossible beef enchiladas. Happy faces all around! Especially after a Ferrero Rocher cake slice!

I have never tried all the years living in 3rd Ward. I heard it was under new ownership. That day 12-21-21 I was in a car accident afterwards hungry and frustrated about the incident. I decided get something to eat. I went in talked to ladies that severed me. I told them what happened. They gave me a margarita 🍹 to calm my nerves. It was probably the best margarita Ive have ever had. The ladies was extremely nice and friendly. We discussed what happen to them after covid. I took my food home. My family has ordered there almost six times since then. We love Spanish Village. My daughter really does. She loves Mexican food. Please try you wont be disappointed. The food is fresh, prices are reasonable, and staff is great. The new manger takes good care of the restaurant. Black owned establishment

Made my first visit to the long time Third Ward establishment a few weeks ago. After living in Houston for 39 years I finally got up the courage to give them a try. I hate to be disappointed by bad Tex-Mex food... Good thing I was not disappointed! I went for Sunday brunch. I had the breakfast enchiladas. The texture was not what I expected, but was very delicious non the less. I was very pleased that the refried beans were vegetarian friendly. I really enjoy the chips and salsa. The salsa was not the typical deep red sauce one would expect. It was a radish broth color, but full of flavor. And the coffee by local roaster, Katz, was really good. I'm looking forward to making another visit soon. It didn't bother me that there were few people there (though that sort of goes against the Tex-Mex cultural vibe).

It had been a lot of years and had to go back before it's closing ! The food was better than I remembered!

The brunch, staff, the food, the old school ambience is all amazing! Definitely will be back. The outside could use a bit of work but all in all, it's a great experience :) you won't regret it

We went here for a private party/graduation and there was a buffet set up plus servers bringing drinks to your table and clearing plates. It was decorated lovely with lights and tables where you could eat, chat and enjoy the company of friends. It was nicely done and had a lovely atmosphere. The food and drinks were delicious as well! And the staff friendly, polite and professional.

Update 2022: With new ownership, two dishes have been added. And. They. Are. Excellent. Be sure to order a bowl of the shrimp soup. And the birria tacos. The chips are no longer burned. The two salsas are delicious. Rice and beans are good. See photos. The tables at the restaurant are admirable. I'm not sure how old they are but they have inset bits of tile and look really retro. The waitstaff couldn't be nicer. Spanish Village is a Houston institution and is historically significant, one of the older Mexican restaurants still in existence here. Back in the day, the combo plate that featured things such as a taco, chile con queso, a chalupa and/or guacamole salad was known as The Ladies Special or The Summer Special at many Mexican restaurants around Houston. I would recommend you forego the enchilada/tamal/rice/beans plate and stick with these summer items piled high with crisp lettuce and diced tomatoes. The selection is served as the starter on the Alfonso Pico Special: Chile Con Queso, Guacamole Salad, Beef Taco, Veracruzana and I would stop there and not go on with the hot plate of tamale/enchilada/rice/beans. That would be my recommendation for your first visit. AND...my rating of four stars is based only on the items in a Summer Special type meal.

Had to visit this historic restaurant before it was gone forever! Unlike every other Houston Tex-Mex restaurants Spanish Village created and entire vegan menu! This isn't just the regular menu item without cheese but a fully curated vegan menu including wonderful breakfast options. Breakfast included Vegan Migas and pancakes! Totally wonderful! There aren't very many places for a vegan breakfast and this place will be truly missed!

Had a late lunch here today. The food is delicious and the margaritas are also and pack a punch. There is a parking area across from the restaurant just for their patrons so don’t worry about parking. They need your patronage so please eat here. It is well worth it.

The Chicken Chilie Rellenos are the Bomb! I highly recommend you try them if ever near or around the medical center...I promise you won't be disappointed. You will find yourself going back for more :)

Loved the place for more than 30 years....love Abhi and the innovations he has brought to bring this wonderful restaurant! For us, it's home.

I have been coming here for almost 10 years, by far my favorite Tex-mex restaurant. The only place I have ever come to where they say welcome home and provide the best service in town. Be prepared to visit when you come in, they will ask how your family is doing and know them by name.

I have been going to Spanish Village for YEARS, as I am a big fan of their margaritas. Such a big fan, in fact, that I would often overlook their occasional sub-par food. The new owners are awesome! Now the food is always just as good as those magical margaritas! And they are finally open on Sundays! We just tried the brunch...everything was delicious!

$2.50 for an empty plate, for real. Entrees ordered and charged us for a plate.

The food was so so, over priced, slow service when hardly anyone there. The owner was so rude and an asshole. I will never go back.

We have been dining at Spanish Village for decades. It had been a while and we dropped in after an appt at the Medical Center. We were not disappointed! The beef enchiladas are consistently awesome as are the margaritas on the rocks! Absolutely superior and the staff is always so gracious and friendly! Love it!

Food was great! Margaritas different, but good also. Service was okay at first but waited long time (30+ min)to pay bill even though only a few people in restaurant.

Johnathan J-Man Johnson, I don't work and I have no ties to Spanish Village Restaurant. About the dedicated parking, I have to say deal with it because it's not the owner's fault they don't have exclusive parking, these days many places share parking lots and that's something no one can't change, we as customers we have to deal with it and not finding such thing as an excuse to do a bad review. If you don't feel the food was done right, tell the manager and they will fix it, that happens in every restaurant and if we don't like the food, it does not necessarily mean it wasn't cooked correctly, simply tell the manager or order a different dish, as I said it happens in all restaurants. About the split checks, I know for a fact it is difficult to split checks in large groups, that's why many places don't offer that option, if you are requesting that, simply be patient and wait. Almost all the time when splitting a bill in a big table there's always something people will say didn't have and that's the extra no one wants to pay. I know the restaurant business and I'd like to say that it's not an easy one my friend. There's lots of work behind the scenes people don't see. My advice is don't go out if you are looking for reasons to complain, almost every restaurant owner and manager are willing to fix any problem but we as consumers need to be more understandable and not have any negative attitude, I can almost guarantee you that if you go back and talk to them how you feel, your next time visit will be much better. Let's support Houston Restaurants

I could live off of the chicken tacos (#33 on the menu), the charro beans, and quacamole! I know there are other awesome dishes on the menu, Miller Beans (#56), the flautas (#71), and chimichanga (#68) for example, but I almost always end up with the tacos. This family run establishment definitely provides and great meal with a family feel.

I absolutely love this place. I’m always treated like family.

I think we need to support the new owner who is committed to keeping the Medina’s old Spanish Village tradition alive. He is breathing new life & adding some fun changes without changing the legendary margaritas or enchiladas. It’s a nice change from the usual slash & burn method of most developers. Thank you Medina’s for holding out for the right buyers.

I have been eating here for decades:..I teach a "History of Houston" class, and I bring my students here, the oldest family owned Tex-Mex restaurant operating from the same location in Houston.
