Review Mala Sichuan Bistro - Houston

Jane Estella
As a picky person with spicy food.... I have trouble looking for good spicy (extremely hot) foods when I travel in TX. I literally have to go to Mexico or near the boarder to actually get spicy food but now that I've visit Houston and actually try different restaurants during my temporary job here... Omg! wow, these Chinese restaurants knows what spicy food should be. I wish all Asian restaurants outside Houston had this bc they truly disappoint. I will forever come here when I crave for something extremely spicy.

I went here before a concert after wanting to go for a long time, I’m so glad I finally made it!! ('▽^人) I ordered laziji, which I am particularly fussy about since it’s a favorite of mine, and it’s safe to say that this restaurant has a wonderful variation of it ^^ The chicken is perfectly crispy! I scarfed that down but then ended up ordering the matcha crepe cake with my friend! The flavor is not too sweet, and we ate it in 5 bites ☚(゚ヮ゚☚)★ It’s also a very well prepared cake!! On top of everything, the interior is very nice. I couldn’t stop staring at the mural because it’s so beautiful.. we will be back!! Thanks!! ♡

My first experience with this place was through takeout and the portion was small and disappointing while the flavors were not so great. It was overly salty and numbing at the same time, I was wondering if me and Sichuan food weren't meant to be. And I was hesitant towards Sichuan food until I tried other restaurants which helped me learn to love the cuisine. So, I tried Mala to give it a second chance and dined in this time. The restaurant is pretty with the full wall painting that greets you when you enter. There's a second floor and it's very chill during lunch time. My group ordered the Mapo Tofu, Cumin Beef, Tofu Pudding with Fish Fillet, and Eggplants in Spicy Garlic. ... I don't like this place as much as other restaurants I've been to. The numbing is not for me. It's a little much and makes the food hard to enjoy. The flavors were good. I enjoyed the texture of the tofu, fish fillet, and eggplant. I'd recommend them. It's not for me and that's ok. My only issue not regarding the food is that they should also offer spoons as some dishes are better eaten with one (as an Asian, not everything has to be eaten with chopsticks). Overall, customer service was nice, food came out in a timely manner, food was also ok. :)

We came in pretty close to closing but the server was still kind to us. We ordered the eggplant, house made Dandan noodles, red oil dumplings, and fried chicken. Everything came hot, fresh and fast. The eggplant was incredible, and something we will have to come back to try again. The chicken was really crispy and flavorful. The green tea crepe cake for dessert was the perfect way to finish the meal. They have a really cool presentation for the cake.

Great food and great decor/vibe. Ceiling is covered in bamboo which adds a nice touch. 2 story with an ample amount of seating. Appears as though they only had 2 servers when I went. They didn't come often at all to check up on you and I didn't see them for a while. They weren't mean or anything but could definitely be friendlier. Good selection of food. Heads up, the peppered beef is still quite spicy despite it not saying this on the menu but the portion was huge( at least to me) which is good. Plenty of parking. Menu had stains.

Absolutely spectacular flavor! Mouth numbingly good! The wait staff was really nice but seemed stretched thin.. Overall, the ambiance and flavor was a winning experience.

Best Sichuan food I’ve had in Texas. They have a lot of really interesting dishes - the spicy green fish was one of my favorites. Be careful, you’ll really get kicked by the spice and mala. No wait when I was there (normal dinner hours on Friday) and the staff was chill.

This is the 4th location of this chain restaurant in Houston that we have tried. Food is good but not great compare to other three locations. There is one dish that we all like it - water boiled fish fillet.

Food is tasty. Red chilli dumpling, fried rice, and sichuan spicy salt and pepper prawn.

This place absolutely lives up to the reviews. The interior is gorgeous, there's a lush bamboo-covered patio, and the food is amazing. If you want a lot of Sichuan flavor, definitely give this place a try. We had the red oil cucumber salad, the funky house noodles, and the red oil wontons, ordering just from the cold appetizers and street food menu for a quick lunch. Everything had that perfect sour/salty/spicy flavor combo I was looking for, and of course the numbing kiss of Sichuan peppercorns.

Very good, authentic Sichuan food. Great atmosphere as well. Comes in large serving sizes and a big bowl of steamed rice. Two people could easily share one entree. Be careful though, the spice ratings here are no joke.

Great Spicey Food

This restaurant produces a range of authentic and tasty dishes. The atmosphere is typical of a restaurant in Chengdu! It can vary the level of spice to suit!

Tried something new in town

We decided to try something new for lunch and I’m so glad we did. The homemade plum juice was so good and refreshing. We shared the Kung Poa Chicken and Mongolian Beef, both were very fresh and amazing flavor. The portion size was very generous and prices were average. We will definitely be back.

Delicious authentic Sichuan food. Don't let the swanky digs fool you, the food is authentic. Very flavorful and fragrant. Ma Po tofu is yummy! We are addicted to the eggplant, so garlicky!!! The twice cooked belly pork was good but does get fatty. Red oil dumplings are good to start with.

Mala Sichuan Bistro has two locations: the original in Chinatown off Southwest Houston’s Bellaire Blvd and the other near downtown in Montrose. I visited the Montrose location – and boy, was I in store for a Chinese treat! It was truly an evening spent in Sichuan – without ever leaving the comforts of home. I do recommend!

If you aren’t familiar with Sichuan or Mala, don’t let that deter you from trying this wonderful restaurant. You are missing so much if you do. Enjoy the adventure, you will find that it is not that adventurous, it’s just good!

The Montrose location is right in the middle of the culinary action in this part of town. You can literally throw a stone from the parking lot and hit one of a number of fabulous eateries. But, you know what happens to those who cast stones…

So, we decided to take a little vacation and just walk through the door. The first thing you notice as you walk in is the beautiful Sichuan art painted on the large wall. The server mentioned that the artist had been contracted from Sichuan and all the images were authentic to the culture. Just another element that makes this restaurant something special.

As it happened to be the Holiday Season, we were also greeted with a large Christmas tree made from Tsingtao beer bottles. What a creative idea! We all got a kick out of it.

We started off with a couple Tsingtao’s and wasted no time ordering the small plates. With all the reader recommendations, it was easy to figure out exactly what to try. It was such a beautiful night in Houston that we decided to have our meal on the patio. Our very attentive server delivered a foursome to the table. My eyes widened and my jaw dropped. What a beautiful presentation!

Although all the apps were delicious, my favorite had to be the Garlic Bacon. Imagine a dish of hand-crafted pork belly, cooked and chilled, wrapped around slices of cucumber, then slathered with a mixture of ground garlic, a sweet and spicy soy sauce concoction, and red chili oil, and finally garnished with julienned green onion. Right off the bat, I could tell where this night was going to take me. Vacation! This app is a must-try here at Mala.

Next up were the Dan Dan Noodles: a custom-made noodle boiled and mixed with mala spicy sauce and sesame paste then topped with boiled spinach, Yibin preserved vegetables, spiced ground pork, and green onions. This is a dish I crave at least once a month. Very tasty.

What Chinese experience is complete without dumplings, right? Well, the Red Oil Dumplings were the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. House-made, pork-filled dumplings slathered in a mix of red chili oil, ground garlic and a sweet and spicy soy sauce concoction, then topped with sesame seeds and green onions. Remarkably beautiful, just have a look at the photography and see for yourself. That’s one thing that is consistent here – everything is beautiful.

To throw in a little vegetarian flare, we had the Cucumber Salad: wedges of fresh Persian cucumber tossed in ground garlic and sesame oil. Just as delicious as it looks!

Wow, so far everything has been incredible! This would be the perfect place to spend Craft Beer Friday. Oddly enough, they have an extensive craft beer menu and these small plates would definitely go great with them during Happy Hour… take note!

Of course, we ordered family-style as it is the best way to truly experience a restaurant. We chose the Aromatic and Spicy Chicken, Water-Boiled Fish Fillet, Mapo Tofu and Mongolian Beef.

The Spicy Chicken was built with bite-size, dark meat chicken pieces, battered and deep-fried, then flash-fried in the wok with dry red chilies and aromatic, spicy seasonings. Awesome! I didn’t find it super spicy, but a couple of people at our table said they felt it was. So, if you like it hot – then go for it. You will love it!

I wasn’t sure how much I would like the Water-Boiled Fish Fillet made with fresh tilapia. Boiled fish is not something I would normally order. But, that is why I don’t always go with my instinct and follow the advice of the chef and locals who frequent the place. The dish is made by braising the fish with garlic and ginger bits in Sichuan-fermented broad bean paste. This fish mixture is then poured on a base of steamed Napa cabbage and leeks, topped with garlic bits, green onion, and red chili powder and finished with a splash of boiling oil. This is such an amazing dish – the flavors are very apparent and in-your-face. I am so glad we ordered this for sure!

The Mapo Tofu was a mixture of soft tofu cubes – braised to perfection – with fresh leeks, fermented broad bean sauce paste and fermented black beans sprinkled with ground Sichuan peppercorn. A great soup and one that has received many recommendations from our readers. So, if tofu is your thing, then this is where it’s at!

Of course, I ordered the Mongolian Beef. It has been my go-to since I was little. The Mongolian Beef was prepared with tender beef slices stir-fried with large green onions, ginger and garlic, then combined with a savory brown sauce. Such great garlic-flavored beef… and the ginger makes it pop. So good!

So, my Sichuan experience here in Montrose is a perfect example of what makes the Houston culinary scene one of my favorites. Every nationality is represented in this city – and Mala Sichuan Bistro definitely has you covered when it comes to Sichuan, China. No matter which location you choose, you can be assured it is the right choice.

This place has a quiet, tranquil atmosphere with amazing food. Their dumplings were awesome. We almost got two orders. We also had their spicy crispy chicken. Soooo delicious.

Today, there was an opportunity for a bunch of friends to meet up for lunch at Mala. First time for all of us at this 2nd location, though most of us had been to, and enjoyed, the original out on Bellaire Blvd. Also attending were two zomatoes of my acquaintance, Michelle and Amanda. The large number of us, besides allowing for a totally 21st Century photo of a bunch of "hipsters" photographing food at the same time (hey, we're taking pictures to share here!) was that it meant we could order and sample a whole bunch of food. I am embarrassed that I don't remember the names of all the dishes. But can confirm that I personally really liked the eggplant.

Now, the word mala refers back to the Chinese word that describes the interesting effect that the Szechuan pepper (not really a pepper...look it up on Wikipedia) does on one's tongue...citrus, pepper burn, tingling, slight numbing, etc.

Most of the dishes had the Szechuan pepper in them to some degree. There was a killer broth with green Szechuan peppers. A glass noodle soup. A beef or chicken with cumin. And other stuff.

We all came away full and pleased. And the cost per person including tip was incredibly fair considering how much we had to eat.

Mala Sichuan Bistro in Houston's Montrose district dishes out the heat in style. The modern Asian decor restaurant has an intimate setting to share a meal amongst friends. Try the duck, cumin beef, spinach and eggplant.

Went with a group of 10 for lunch and sampled a variety of entrees from soup, meats and veggies. Total cost per person was $15. The food is spicy so be prepared for a little sting! #bringtheheat
