Review State Fare Kitchen & Bar - Houston

Lauri D. Bridgen
First time to this establishment. I was impressed with the space and the seating options. They have booths with dividers that give you privacy, long tables to accommodate 6-8 people, regular tables and chairs, and they also have a nice patio along the exterior of the restaurant. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Our glasses were never empty. I had the wedge salad and the gumbo. Both were very good. The wedge salad looked more like a half head of lettuce verses a wedge; the portion was big. It was topped with candied pecans, bacon and sliced cherry tomatoes. I opted for no red onion. I also am not a blue cheese fan, so I altered mine: no blue cheese crumbles, no blue cheese dressing, substitute with jalapeno ranch instead. The gumbo was the perfect temperature with a nice piece of garlic bread. It is a little spicy, but I enjoyed it. My meal was very filling and tasted great! They have a full menu, so I will return to try more items. The restaurant was clean and the bathrooms well-tended. They have a room called the “Music Room”. Loving music as I do, I peeked in and fond out if is a private room for parties. I found out later, it is the only room they don’t play music in, so maybe they should change the name. Speaking of music, the music they play in the common areas is great. Lots of 80’s and light rock. Complimentary valet service is available. Don’t forget to tip. Regarding the valet, my only suggestion would be for them to tell the valet service to please not put their hands on the exterior windows of the cars. Both my car and my friend’s car had a palm print on the driver side window. This is very annoying especially if you just had your vehicle detailed. I am not discrediting State Fare for this and wouldn’t dock them a star in my review, but it would be appreciated if something was mentioned. For an extra treat, visit during the holidays. The Memorial City “Gateway” is nicely lit with pretty Christmas lights.

Great food! Nice decor and big portions! I would recommend this place for a good brunch and come with a healthy appetite because the plates are very generous with their portions. The place looks clean and well kept. They play music to the vibe is friendly and upbeat. There is valet available and a parking garage for additional parking.

I recently dined at State Fare, and it was an exceptional experience. The food was nothing short of amazing. The staff was not only friendly but also highly professional, making the overall dining experience a true delight. From start to finish, State Fare delivered on taste, service, and ambiance. Highly recommended!

One of our favorite restaurants! The food is always cooked to perfection! Highly recommend the Honey Glazed Brussel Sprouts!! The service can seem really slow at times but we’ve never had an issue. A couple of times we’ve gone it’s been hot in there like the A/C wasn’t on but it’s Houston so it’s just hot everywhere. Would definitely recommend to anyone!

This is a great brunch spot. Great location, staff, and menu selection. They even had complimentary valet when I went. Our server was very friendly and recommended the most amazing red velvet waffles with ribs. Definitely try the frozen drink flight. I would return and recommend this place to friends, family, and clients.

State Fare is such a fun place to go for brunch. My family and I really enjoyed their “secret menu” brunch board which had pecan pancakes, chicken & waffles, deviled eggs, and avocado toast. We also tried their frozen cocktails flight… OMG the ocean water is AMAZING!!! I crave that silly drink it was so good. The service was just okay but we knew they were busy so no real problem for us.

We went here for a group dinner. We were in a private room, which was not good for talking. It was too loud that we can’t hear people in our own table. The food was good and the staff was helpful.

This is was my 1st time visiting. We went from lunch. I loved this place for some many reasons. Even though the service was slow but I won't blame the waiter. He was extremely efficient, me & my husband had our orders & drinks correctly. There was only one person employee (that I noticed) attending every table where I was sitting. He definitely earned an extra tip. I'm going back to try for dinner one day. This place earned my business. The food was delicious. The guacamole & cheese appetizer were a knock out. I had the frozen cocktail flight. Consist of 4 frozen cocktail (small size) but enough for 1 person. Brain freeze but who cares!!!. They were absolutely good. I recommend this place to everyone. Absolutely beautiful & the atmosphere is excellent.

Visited late Saturday night, so there was plenty of seating available. Very nice restaurant, but I wasn't impressed. Limited menu & overpriced for what they offer, in my opinion. On top of it being the first time here, we were solicited by 2 pre-teens right at our table askfor donations. I mean, really??? I could understand if this happened outside but not right at my table. They tried a few others as well & we all seemed to be taken back by this. Honestly, I thought it was some sort of Youtube prank.

Mother's Day Special Board was delish. Daniel was an awesome server. We were seated without reservation. Mimosas on point. Everything acceptable. People answering the phone should have better customer service...if it weren't for their attitude they would have received 5 stars.

Dined here for brunch on my mom's birthday yesterday. We made reservations at 11 am. It was semi packed but by the time we left it was crowded. The ambiance was really nice and the space is well kept. Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive. For appetizers, we had the bacon wrapped shrimp and fried green tomatoes. Both good. I ordered the State Fare breakfast and replaced the biscuit with grits. The grits and sausage were my favorite. My husband didn't care for the sausage. The bacon had a nice sweet taste to it. Overall it was good, I would have preferred a little more seasoning. The mimosa flight was nice, we ordered 2 for a group of 5.

Went in for brunch, have been several times before always a great experience. Atmosphere is nice, servers always friendly. I ordered a chicken fried steak, was disappointed when I cut in to it. Was paper thin all batter. Two others in our party ordered the same. One had a little more thickness to it but the other was very similar to mine. I had to bring it to their attention. At that point I was kinda like blah. Server did offer to make another but I kinda lost my appetite. He did pack me one to go for the inconvenience I guess. How was that one? Idk didn’t try it gave it away. Did look a little better. Not holding it against them just not ordering that again.

Rarely do I feel overwhelmed by a menu at an American restaurant. I was pleasantly suprised by the variety on this menu. Fried tomato with shrimp were good. Solid for a family gathering or even as a date night pick.

Had an amazing experience at State Fare while supporting our food bank for Houston Restaurant Weeks. The food was delish, the service impeccable, and the ambiance was chic and inviting. 10 out of 10 would recommend for date night, a get together with friends/family, or a business lunch.

Excellent Sunday brunch

4 of us went for the first time yesterday. 3 had the breakfast platter. Cat head biscuit was huge, 2 maple bacon and 2 sausage patty topped off with the best hash browns. The meal is big enough to split, we had lots of leftovers. 1 had the eggs Benedict over crab cakes, while this is not to my taste I did sample and the crab cake was amazing. Will be back- can't wait for the Sugar Land location to open up!

Great food and good service!
I am going to be a regular here. Nice drink selection and the food was amazing. They also have a really good brunch !

Read good reviews and have to disagree. Very expensive and crowded and loud. The drinks were too sweet like they are trying to save money on booze. Service was slow and indifferent. Then the guy tried to rush us out. None of my party of 4 were impressed.

The bean and bacon appetizer was nothing more than overpriced refried black beans. My catfish was grossly undercooked and greasy. Restaurants in this corridor have to be unique and spot on their game 100% of the time or they’ll be doomed to the fate of the business that occupied the space prior.
It's The Veggie Option
When I left the cushy cosmopolitan bubble of NYC for a work trip to Texas, I was already mentally preparing myself that the veggie options there would not be bountiful. And it’s true that it is certainly more difficult to come across smoked tofu or a hummus and falafel flatbread in Houston than Manhattan. Therefore I decided to embrace the Southern style cuisine as best as my veggie-self could, which essentially meant accepting that I would be filling my body with an onslaught of carbs and cheese (frankly, not a particularly daunting thought…)

Service was lacking. Perhaps it was due to short staffing for the holiday but I'm fairly certain the manage is the one who sat me and took all my orders. Nice atmosphere with 80s music playing. This place is really best for date nights and drinks with friends.,kind of pricy but the food is pretty good. I'd return if it was a girls night out but not really that family vibe.

One of my top 5 places to brunch at in Houston! Not only are the portions good but the food is even better. They have very good service but is pack on Sundays so make sure you do reservations. You have to trying EVERYTHING on their menu!

With a portfolio as impressive as Cherry Pie Hospitality, there is no question that Lee Ellis and partner Jim Mills know a thing or two about restaurant concepts. Petite Sweets, a long-time favorite of ours has been our go to for frozen custard and Lee's Fried Chicken & Donuts delivers with their juicy buttermilk bathed chicken and let's not forgot about that Blueberry Cake Donut. So it was with zero hesitation that we headed right over to get our hands on the menu that brings together all the things we love and frequently crave. Introducing State Fare, a recently opened restaurant in Memorial Gateway boasting an eclectic menu that we promise will offer something for everyone.
Great Beer Now!
Few things in life are better than a well- stock beer bar and thanks to the craft beer craze sweeping the land, there are more and more of these establishments than in the past. One such beer bar I had the pleasure of visiting just a short time ago is the Pour Society, located near Houston’s City Center, close to Memorial City Mall.

Walk into Pour Society and the first thing you will notice is, of course, the beer. They emphasize local brew here and they have it on display the moment you enter. The bar is lengthy and backed by a nice tap wall loaded with beer options. They have a good number of bottled/canned options as well and they rotate some of them, so there is always something new to try.

Beer alone would be reason enough to visit Pour Society but the food is tasty as well and some of the meals are quite large. We started our visit with deviled eggs as an appetizer and they matched up quite nicely with my opening beer. I then ordered a Pour Burger and was pleasantly surprised at its size, not to mention good taste, and I liked that they prepared the meat just the way I requested. The house fries on the side were good and, again, it all matched up well with my beer- so well, that I was inclined to stay a little longer than usual.

About the only issue I had with Pour Society was the service. There were lots of empty tables when I visited and I felt they took far too long to bring my food and drink. However, a casual mention of this to the waiter was all it took to get things right. He relayed my concerns to the manager and she took care of everything. You may not always get perfection when you visit a restaurant, but if you voice your concern and they take care of the problem, then what more can you ask for? This is all it takes for me and Pour Society did come through when asked.

Pour Society is a little more expensive than other restaurants, and that goes for both the food, beer, and other drinks. Still, the slightly higher prices are not bad and when you look around and see so many beers staring you in the face, you are willing to forgive somewhat higher prices. I liked it overall and it’s a place I am certain to return in the future.

Went for lunch today and had a cup of gumbo and their standard burger. The burger was very good - not a big fan of wedge fries, though. The gumbo was excellent. Probably three dozen beer taps behind the bar. Nice decor, friendly staff. Will come back.
