Review House Of Pies - Houston

Ana Ochoa
Classic diner style restaurant with a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, as well as a kids menu. The coffee is fairly light, so if you like strong coffee, this one isn't for you, but the food is very good and the staff is really friendly.

This was our first visit, it was fairly okay, won't be returning. The food was hot and the service was good. I had a piece of Turtle Cheese cake, it was good. My chicken fried chicken was salty and fried too hard. Glad I finally had a chance to visit.

Stopped by for breakfast and tried their recommend eggs-adilla (quesadilla w eggs). Friendly service and welcoming atmosphere. Inside reminded me of an old fashioned breakfast dinner. Pies per slice is about ~ $4 - $5 and there is a grand selection from savory to sweet. Tried their lemon meringue, Dutch apple, French silken (chocolate mousse), and coconut creme pies. All very delicious and it was hard to choose a favorite. Looking forward to stopping by again for some sweets the next time we’re in town!

Came here for coffee and pie. The pie was great as always. A little bit hard getting a refill of decaf, but I eventually got a refill. It was also clear that our server was ready for us to leave sooner than we were, but the pie was worth the pressure.

If you want a slice of pie (actually no matter in what state you are) this is the place to devour one! Soo many options and if I would live in Houston I would make sure to have a top three and try them all! They were perfect, just as you would imagine a delicious pie! Really nice service, the lady at the entrance helped us choose just two options! Get the fruit pie warm, as advised, it was even better if I can even say that!

Love the huge menu. Have breakfast all day. Great service. Big fan of the tuna melt!

Ordered pies for thanksgiving this year and was pleasantly surprised ! They tasted great even 2 days later and the packaging was done really well. Will probably use again next year!

They're not kidding when they say "slice made in heaven".. not only is the pie magnificent (I had the chocolate cream+mousse), but the food, service, and atmosphere is incredible. Food was fresh and tasty, seasoned very well. My fries were crunchy on outside soft on inside, and my fiances hash browns had cheese not only on top, but in the center too which was VERY appreciated!! This will be our new regular spot, 12/10.

Best place to get meringue pies, chocolate, coconut, and lemon. The pecan pie is also a great choice.

This is place is great! Chairs are too close with each other. However, staff are friendly and nice. It's a pie place, you have to tip staff for atleast 3.95 per person as per their sign! As many maybe people will just hang out there. I ordered banana split it was pretty good. I also bought 3 different kinds of pies which cost usd15 which is a decent price for a good pie. I will highly recommend this place. I hope they will redecorate the area and improve the ambiance but other than that, I cannot complain!!

Really nice the staff was nice our waiter was a little strange not much for talking she just kinda stood there until we said what we wanted. The food was good didn't have any ketchup for our hash brown.

Our daughter took us there during our visit. Our seasoned waitress did a fabulous job. She was one step ahead. The food was hot and really good. We couldn't leave without having pie. We were so glad we did- the pie was wonderful. We had blueberry, Chocolate banana cream, and pumpkin. My daughter has had the Bayou Goo pie and said it too is fantastic.

Hands down to the best pumpkin pie we have ever had. I went to this place after reading reviews on the best pumpkin pies Houston has to offer. It was luscious. Very strong custard flavor. And very little cinnamon. I hate how the others douse their pumpkin pies in cinnamon or all spice. The sweetness was spot on. However, their pecan pie was too sweet to our liking.

Amazing pies. Service was also amazing. Definitely enjoy my time there and recommend.

Our Server Angel Nigel served my buddies and me today. It was a pleasant experience. I haven't been here in a long time and it was a BLESSING to have visited here after being MIA for a long time from here. The food was great and the service superb. I call our Server an Angel because that was what he was today. He gave me my water and handed me my favorite dish I ordered - the O'Brien potatoes. These potatoes I ONLY eat them in House of Pies because NO ONE (and I mean just that) not even myself, can make these heavenly potatoes. If you get BLESSED to visit here, please order some O'Brien potatoes and you'll see for thyself MY REASON to feast on these potatoes. BLESSINGS

I stopped by the House of Pies on Kirby last week on National Pie Day. The experience was OK. It took a while to get seated. Once we were seated, our waitress was friendly. I was bummed that they were out of banana cream pie. I settled on a turtle cheesecake. Yeah, I know it’s not a pie…

My favorite place to eat breakfast (day or night) when I’m in Houston. Friendly staff with great service and great food. The prices are very reasonable also.

Always Great!<br/><br/>The best cheddar cheese omelette I've ever eaten! And Tyler was an excellent server. Very attentive. I don't get down here often, but we always try to stop here.

Delicious desserts<br/><br/>A great place to stop for desserts, pies or cakes, after eating at nearby restaurants. Across the street from the original Carrabba's and Gracie's and near Pappadeaux's. Diner type setting.

HORRIBLE FOOD AND HORRIBLE SERVICE! <br/><br/> The grilled pork chops were floured and greasy - looked fried. Wait staff (before we ordered) told us chops would have grill marks etc, so we were expecting typical grilled chops. Green beans tasted as if just poured from the can and cold. The supposedly garlic bread was soggy with butter, burned, and no garlic taste whatsoever. Baked potatoes - side dish and entree - were cold. The entree potato was so cold that butter would not melt! The entree potato was remade and brought to the table 17 mins later after everyone was finished. <br/><br/>We excused the wait staff who took our order because according to her she had only been there two weeks. After we brought concern to her attention; however, she was no longer friendly. It is the restaurant's and/or wait staff's fault (BUT NOT THE CUSTOMER) when food is served of poor quality and cold. PAYING CUSTOMERS have every right to expect good quality and hot food!<br/><br/>In any case, our wait staff told us to see the manager about our concern. I feel since we were the paying customer, the manager should have come to us - not us having to find him. Our concern was quietly and politely brought to the manager's attention at the register. I was resigned to resolving with the manager until REBUFFED and SHOWED NO interest. At no time, did the wait staff or manager ever apologize or suggest a remedy for serving food that was of poor quality/taste and cold. <br/><br/>ADDITIONALLY, wait staff, Kendra, working the register beside the manager said aloud (as we were talking to the manager) "I'm leaving this area - IT'S HOSTILE" up here and threw her hands in the air. To this point, we had spoken to manager in a low voice so other guests could not over hear. After Kendra's comment and no response from the manager to address the situation or apologize for the comment, it was quite apparent this group had no regard for us as customers. As we tried to talk to the manager, Kendra - was loud and talking over us, such that I could barely hear what the manager beside her was saying. HOW UNPROFESSIONAL. She's in a hospitality service position - not her own kitchen or business! <br/><br/>Again, HORRIBLE FOOD AND HORRIBLE SERVICE!

Wide variety of pies, all looked wonderful and appealing. I had purchased the French black bottom& the pecan pie, which were both a hit. Would recommend to anybody.

Biscuits were cakey, not biscuity.  Disappointment!  Service was quick even though they were packed.  Everything tasted great but I dunno about them biscuits.

BUG IN MY FOOD-HOUSE OF PIES 3112 KIRBY DR. HOUSTON, TX!!!<br/>Tonight seemed like a good night to go and grab a nice meal and sweet potato pie from House Of Pies on 3112 Kirby Dr. What was supposed to be a meal break for french toast turned out to be a ZOO! I FOUND A BUG IN MY FOOD, and once I showed the bug to the bus boy, he grabbed a red haired waitress, and she grabbed the manager to help report the incident. The manager was extremely unprofessional, ignorant, NONCHALANT, and rude!!!! He called me a liar and after literally blocking the front door and holding me hostage in the restaurant, he followed me outside TO HARASS AND curse me out!!! He told me he was gonna take down my license plates number and continued to make threats and follow me outside almost into another parking lot! He called me names and refused to accommodate a long time customer after I was sick to my stomach with the fact that there was an insect in my food and his behavior!!! I have been a customer for a few years and I USED to enjoy the once upon a time friendly service and most of all the pies but all that changed for me tonight!!!! I have never been so disrespected by restaurant management ever!!!! When I asked for the balding, caucasian, feminine figured, Obese manager’s name, He told me that it was none of my business! I then told him that I wanted his manager’s name and he told me that he was his manager and even went so far as to tell me that he owned House Of Pies!!! When I asked the other manager, which was an african american 40 something year old, short curly haired woman, she had a foul attitude and rudely told me that the disgusting, lying manager’s name is CHUCK!!! I’m disgusted with how I was treated and I’ll be sure to let everyone know NOT TO GO THERE!!!!! I already know that this abusive disgusting manager would never have followed a man outside and curse him out the way he cursed at me!!!<br/><br/>Signed, Disgusted EX Customer<br/>Time of incident: around 5:55-6:03pm<br/>When: Tue December 15, 2015<br/>Where: House Of Pies located on 3112 Kirby Dr. Houston, TX 77098<br/>Cost of meal that should’ve been comped: $14.06!

A greasy diner with ambience, menu and service stuck in the 70's. It is kind of great for a throwback.<br/><br/>Battered Mozzarella Stix 👍👍👍👍<br/>Griddle Platfer deluxe with waffle 👍👍<br/>Huevos Rancheros 👍👍<br/>Texas Chicken Breast Sandwich 👍👍<br/>Tres Leches slice 👍<br/>

Houston landmark and late night icon. Recently cleaned up and updated, but same greasy diner menu and desserts. Outstanding and large list of pies to order to go, so good for parties, holidays, and gifts.

Don't let the name fool you, while they do have some of the best pies in the city the food menu is also really great after a night on the town. The Patty melt is heavenly! And the french silk pie is a must have.

Simply the best pie I've ever had! I had the Strawberry and Rhubarb Pie, perfectly cooked, mild sweetness, such a flakey crust from end to end. Nothing better than this right here!

After a long absence from daily life in Houston, I've been back a lot in the past couple of months due to illness of an elderly parent. In the past 4 weeks, I've been here three times at all different hours day and night. Still one of the best feel good diners out there, the God and pies are like stepping back into 1974...and I like that! Service is coffee shop friendly (meaning you get what you give--for those with service issues--a smile and a polite request goes a long way here.). Eggs any style with a side of Potatoes O'Brien which rock here, along with great fish and chips and chicken fried chicken sandwich. All pies are good--I love the French Blackbottom! It's a classic place...

Cherry pie is too gelatin, not enough whole cherries. The Fresh strawberry pie was excellent, huge berries, perfect crust, lots of whip cream. <br/>Service is horrible.

What a great place...reminds of the great diners in New Jersey. The food is fresh and tasty and never seen so many great pies. Had the chocolate meringue pie! Yummy!

Strawberry cheesecake to die for!. I love their desserts, especially strawberry cheesecake, but also their tuna melt is so good, service is great most of the time too! I'm always up for going here =)

I have eaten at the HOP's.... I have eaten at the HOPs countless times since I moved inside the loop 8 years ago. That's why I was so upset last weekend when one of the managers (I guess) came up to the table at which my friend and I were eating and informed us that if we didn't order something else, we would have to pay an extra $2.50. That being said, understand my friend and I both ordered breakfast each, along with 2 drinks and we had been there LESS THAN 2 HOURS!!! What's more, there was no one waiting and there were tables available. I was so disgusted and hurt I may never go back again. These people neither know what good service is nor how thankful they should be that some people are still eating out in this economy!

Almost Fifty years in Houston. This Houston based establishment has been serving the best pies and breakfast items in the Bayou City since 1963 when much of the city was still wheat fields. They have dozens of delicious pies to choose from and their breakfast dishes no not disappoint. My roommates and I make it a point to eat here at least twice a month, as we ate at the Westheimer location more often when we used to live down the street from it. The old diner atmosphere and the 24 hour open service makes House of Pies a tasty and filling retreat. <br/><br/>Also, their whole pies are the perfect purchase for Thanksgiving.

Hash brown heaven. Love this place. Nice & casual. Always busy. Always great service.<br/>Ham & eggs! Yum. The star, for me, is the hash browns. Nice & brown (crispy) on the outside. Tender on the inside. Early Sunday morning, before the crowds, is a great time to have breakfast & read the paper.

We run out of pies. As if to counter the absolutely stunned look on my face when she said they were out of Cherry Pie, the waitress said,"After 9P we start running out of pies," and then produced a list of about a dozen pies no longer being offered. Oh, so that makes it okay, I guess?<br/><br/>Excuse me but this is the HOUSE OF PIES. If you can't figure out how to keep popular pies ready to serve after 9P on a Saturday night you should just admit that you have no business being in business. If Hooters ever ran out of wings (or hooters for that matter) it'd be a dark, dark day. If you know that after 9P you will run out of pies MAKE MORE PIES.

Liked it but disappointed by "Bayou Goo". I recently moved to Houston and made my second trip to the House of Pies yesterday. First time I had peach pie a la mode. It was pretty good except I didn't find the crust up to par. It was roughly the quality of what I'd expect from something I bought frozen at the grocery store.<br/><br/>Yesterday, I wasn't sure exactly what I was in the mood for so I tried their best-selling Bayou Goo pie. Judging by its description, I was expecting something along the lines of Mississippi Mud pie: a chocolate layer, cream cheese, whipped cream, etc. While there was a "chocolate layer" its flavor was lacking. I was expecting a rich chocolate flavor but the color of the chocolate layer bordered on gray and the flavor and texture was just as drab.<br/><br/>Still, I look forward to trying breakfast and lunch there. I think I will stick mainly to fruit pies in the future.

A Houston Classic. A college student's haven. Really good prices, open 24/7, and the food is good diner fare. In the interest of full disclosure, I must say that I had a bad experience once (seriously bad service once, and bad food the month following hurricane Ike), but that was one out of dozens of times with no problems. With the exception of that one time, the service is always very friendly and warm. I am very comfortable recommending this beloved eatery.

Fun Late Night Place. Great Pies and an interesting crowd.

Great selection. What a find and a treat for Houston to have this place, especially since it's 24/7. I'm a dessert freak, and I love going to a place where I get to choose from about 30 pies, of which I'd love to try about 20. I ended up trying the house specialty, the Bayou Goo, and a cocoanut custard. The Bayou Goo has a nice crust, and a chocolate mousse kind of filling, topped with whipped cream. It was very good, not too sweet. Both are good, but I deem the cocoanut custard better of the two; it was full of shredded cocoanut and was very flavorful and satisfying. The chocolate cookies looked so good, the manager gave me a couple for the road. I had one at home, and appreciate the chewiness, and semi-sweet chocolate with some nut. I rate the cookies a 4.5/5. The pies were $3.50 each. There is a full menu available for dining in, but there was a lot of to go business.

A legendary Houston diner. House of Pies is the first place I come when I've been away from Houston, and I always order one of three things: a tuna melt, which is served on homemade herb bread; fish and chips, which are beer battered, or blueberry pancakes, which are amazing, and available at whatever hour you might want them.<br/><br/>Of course, the pies are amazing, too. Try the Bayou Goo:<br/>"A pecan crust with a layer of sweet cream cheese, then a layer of vanilla custard swirled with chocolate chunks and topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings." Yum!<br/><br/>It gets pretty packed when the bars close, and the waitresses can be sticklers about the $2.50 per person per hour minimum--you can't just work on a cup of coffee for hours--but it's worth a visit for the people watching and the 24-hour chatter.

A Houston landmark. I don't think that any late night outing would be complete without a trip to House of Pies at the end. Its a classic diner place with everything you would expect for breakfast lunch and dinner. They have every pie you can imagine and some that you can't! Always leave room for desert!

Awesome Pies. 3:00AM, hungry for pie, this is the place. Whatever the time, if you want pie, House of Pies won't disappoint.
Tuesday Special
HOP is far from  the best place to get breakfast. There ain’t nothin’ fancy about House of Pies. The decor and the waitresses are about the same age. The orange  juice is definitely not fresh squeezed. And for reasons I don’t understand, the hash browns are consistently under cooked. But that’s what I love about House of Pies. They don’t do it perfect, but they do it right. Sometimes I just want a lot of food for a little bit of money, served with a lot of salt and butter, by waitresses who know how to sass if necessary. A
Arbitrary Critic
The worst affront of House of Pies is obviously, however, that they are always out of the pie you want. Whenever you go for the pie, you have to pick out three or four from the list that you want to eat that night, because they're always out of your first choice, they're usually out of your second choice, and they only sometimes have your third choice. I don't understand! Maybe they should just keep a smaller, more manageable pie list! Then it would manage customers expectations better! The sad thing is, they've managed their customers' expectations perfectly! I only ever expect terrible service and not the pie I want now! -9

My son ordered the classic large, fluffy pancakes, served with warm maple syrup and little individual jelly tubs. I had the crispy hash browns, 3 egg omelets and bottomless coffee. When you’re in the mood for a diner omelet, nothing else will do.
Foodnearsnellville
This is a long time favorite midnight and later eatery. The exotic crowds you would see at this place around 2am made it something of a legend in these parts. A good portion of the late nighters were people from the Montrose district..
