Review Underbelly - Houston

Manuel Mas
Excellent service, food with lots of taste. The Pork Collar and Korean Goat and Dumplings are excellent, spicy though, so watch out. However, my favorite was the fried carrot cake with cream cheese. A must try.

I've been to Underbelly a few times now, and my second to last time, I was disappointed both in the food and the service. However, my most recent visit blew me awau, and I felt that Underbelly was shining again after the management changes. We ordered the whole fish, the boat and dumplings, the mussels, and pork collar. The pork was just pretty darn good, but everything else was a-mazing. A good excuse for gluttony. My favorite was the mussels, because the the broth it comes in should be bottled as a good dose of pure flavor. The whole snapper was a close second, especially once everything was dipped in the red curry sauce. So glad I have this place a nother chance.

Excellent dinner! We started with a snapper salad, which surprised us when it came out. We expected a green salad with snapper on top, instead of a tuna/chicken salad style salad. However, it was delicious! We then got pork jowl and Korean marinated beef tri-tip; both dishes were well cooked and very tasty. For drinks, we got their "shrubs"; drinking vinegar mixed with your choice of a base (we got Topo Chico). They taste like light sodas; if you're not drinking alcohol, I'd highly recommend trying them! For dessert, we got the vinegar pie, which was very good and lemony. I'd definitely come back!

This is my first time dining at one of Chef Shepard's restaurant and I'm totally blown away. Underbelly menu is somehow very Asian fusion that will sure to tingle every section of your taste bud. Rabbit leg tikka masala and pork collar noodle is my fav. Korean goat dumpling is similar as Korean Tteok-bokki so there's nothing to shout about. The food was prepared exactly the same as the origin which I truly applauded. Menu changes frequently so do check their website first before making a visit.

Unique concept with outstanding food and service. We had a party of seven and let the wait staff choose for us. Not everyone liked everything, which is to be expected, but everything was beautifully and creatively prepared. The hangar steak was my personal favorite - wonderfully flavorful, cooked to perfection and complimented with fresh chimichurri. The braised goat was very good, and the crab fingers were excellent. Cocktails were superb. Wait staff was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. Beautiful decor and very clean - great to impress a date or business associates.

Amazing food. Great atmosphere. Great care is put into each quality dish. Professional staff. Kyle R. was a great server.

Server was really nice and attentive. They have a huge selection of wine but a small selection of beer. However both the beer and wine is carefully chosen to be paired with the food items.

Amazing food. Great servers. Terrific wine selection. Absolute MUST when in Houston!

Had an amazing meal here. Steak, pork collar. Delicious. Also a wonderful bottle of wine, so good we. Bought a second. You should eat here.

Really fabulous space which is welcoming and interesting from the minute you enter - you pass the bar first and then go down a short hallway to the main dining area which is low-lit, full but not crammed, and open to the kitchen. Loved the natural wood tables and the strings of lights. This was my first visit and we went with friends who were familiar with the menu so gave us a great taste of all the specialties. I liked everything but probably the snapper dip with crackers, which we had first up, was my favourite. The goat dumplings are famous and deservedly so and I enjoyed them too - especially the texture of the rice dumplings - but they didn't take top spot for me. Loved both the drinks I had, particularly the Winter Fern. Wish I hadn't taken so long to get here as it closes soon and I wish I could try a few more things before it does!

Went to Underbelly Preserve tonight for my wife’s birthday. Awesome cocktails at the bar and the menu was fabulous just like Underbelly and 1/5th! We had the crispy rice salad, crawfish & noodles and meat hanger steak (may have the name wrong on the steak) and the only thing I regret is not having more room in my belly! You must try this place if you’re in Houston!!!

This is easily a top 10 restaurant in Houston. Every aspect is exceptional. The food is unique, the drink selection is high quality and fun, and the service is even better. Your server will talk with you in detail about every aspect of the meal and create a completely unique experience. The brisket, the goat dumplings, the head cheese, and everything in between is outstanding.

Everything was great! They had a table for two on the porch for us, as we did not have a reservation on a Saturday night and it was nice and comfortable. Complimentary valet was great too. Every dish was wonderful and the manager came by to make sure our night was great. If you appreciate locally sourced food and owner operated establishments, this place is a must!

The food, while excellent in the most part, struggled to really find it's voice. I understand the "small plates" concept, and sending food out when it's done is definitely of benefit to the kitchen, however as a dining experience it was very disjointed. Individual dishes were packed full of flavour and the kitchen certainly knows how to craft an exceptional plate of food. However the whole fell a little flat. Pricey too, with the ribeye sharing dish at $125 being a little bit outside what I would call "value for money". Not sure if other restaurants in H town are doing the same level of cooking, but there's certainly better value to be had. Will return, but will be more selective when ordering next time, and may insist on food arriving at the same time.

"A fool and his money are easily separated". Very, very poor food. The BBQ was cremated, like a piece of charcoal. We were looking at each other and thinking, how on Earth is this possibly the best restaurant in Houston (according to the critics). Of course, it isn't remotely the best restaurant in Houston. It isn't even the best restaurant within two blocks on Westheimer, as Uchi is infinitely better. Don't believe the hype, it is paid for.

Love the casual but upscale open dining. Food is interesting. I like the small plate concept and sharing. (I always am interested in what other people are eating so the sharing works!) Reminds me of the "Girl & the Goat in Chicago" which we also like for the same reasons. Very unique food and very knowledgable wait staff.I look forward to going again.

Fabulous night out! Nice patio! We ate the short ribs and ribeye. It was cooked to perfection! Melt in your mouth. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the wine and recommended a great bottle to compliment the food. Thank you Bryan!

Underbelly never disappoints! I’ve been there quite a few times, and food is always delicious, fresh, and best of all unique. The staff is friendly and never pretentious. I look forward to my next visit!

The heirloom tomato salad was amazing. The waitstaff are foodies and their enthusiasm and pride in place is evident. The only disappointment were the meatballs: very dry. We overheard the table across from us saying the same thing. Save room for dessert!

The food is always stellar when we go. My favorite menu item is the Korean Braised Goat and Dumplings. The pork belly was also amazing! Tonight we also got to meet Chris Shepherd. He was so nice to us and is a truly humble guy. He works the line and takes complete ownership in his restaurant. His employees genuinely love working there!

Excellent place to have a great taste of southwestern food. The place buys fresh ingredients from local Farmers. You can learn a lot from them in the House of Carbs podcast with Joe House in the Ringer Network

Super cute and quirky. Unique meal and drink options. We chose to share the Korean poboy and goat & dumplings. Both were amazing !!! The wine list was awesome. Would like to go back for dinner and wine with friends.

It was a very nice atmosphere. The waitress was very knowledgeable of the food. I really liked that the food came out one by one and we were able to share and enjoy it thoroughly. And it was all delicious. A little later it got a little loud but it was still a great experience.
