Review Prego Italian Cuisine - Houston

Adam Montoya
This place was a pleasant surprise for a last-minute choice. Our waiter was both welcoming and well-versed with the menu. While the food was good, it didn't particularly stand out to me. I might not suggest Prego's on my own, but I'd be happy to return if someone else chose it.

Cute little Italian place in Rice Village. Cozy atmosphere, great service, and to date, the BEST red sangria I've ever had. The sweet potato gnocchi were cooked to perfection and the halibut was moist and delicious. A must try!

We went for lunch during restaurants weeks at 1pm on a Monday and there was a lot of space available for sitting. The food we ordered was good, (not necessary amazing) but the staff was great, all of the workers had great attention to detail and were very professional, pictures: Cesar salad, vegetable soup, jalapeño fettuccini, and prego ravioli.

Definitely a delightful experience! Delicious food and wonderful staff! Meal selection was perfect and daily specials are on point!

Foods are fresh and delicious! This restaurant was established in 1983, it’s been 40 years! Will definitely come back to try other dishes.

After reading reviews I had higher expectations for this place. We started off by asking recommendations from our server who said the calamari was their top seller and the crab cakes were not. The crab cakes were awesome and the calamari was average. Mista salad was bland, veal was chewy, and the risotto had no flavor. However the red snapper was delicious! The breading was light yet crunchy. I will be back to try a few more things on the menu before giving up or recommending to others.

Wonderful restaurant! Great staff. Nice wine list. The lasagna was so delicious! Very thin noodle layers and nice red sauce. Also a nice selection desserts. We plan to return the next time we are staying in Houston.

Fast service, the risotto was good, but some flavor was missing. Good butternut squash ravioli, plenty of walnuts.

I arrived solo on a busy Friday evening and they were extraordinarily helpful and seated me immediately at a table for four even though I was a party of one which I appreciated. The server was attentive and explained the specials and even helped me choose something comforting as it had been a trying day. I had a glass of Moscato which was perfectly chilled, the carbonara, and the house bread. It was all delicious and the pasta was hot and creamy to warm me up on a chilly Houston night. I was too stuffed to try dessert but next time I will save room as everything I tried did not disappoint!

Went there for a regular Sunday lunch. They have a light Italian music on the background. the place smells like cheese and wine. Huge wine selection to drink from. Staff were nice too. We ordered their lasagna, meatballs and chicken parmesan; were completely satisfied. Definitely will come back.

Spaghetti and meatballs..WOW. My friend got the carbonara and that may have been even better. Very impressed with the quick food, constant refilling of water, and greetings from staff. Will be back for sure!

We are spoiled living in Phoenix with an abundance of great Italian food. We decided to try Prego on a whim. We could not have been more pleased. Awesome atmosphere, friendly staff, and the food is EXACTLY what you are supposed to get! Phenomenal! If you are in Houston and you don't stop in, you made a mistake.

amazing service, excellent food, and affordable prices. Even though the Restaurant is quite small and in the busy Rice Village, it makes up for it, with friendly service, and delicious food. we tried the Lasagna, veal marsala, and Fettucine alfredo, I highly recommend all three, you can tell right away that everything is made fresh, and I really like the fact that they are very flexible with addon's and substitutions on the menu. A special thanks to Daniel, Carlos for the amazing service!!

Absolutely impressed with with the food! Appetizers were great and we had no wait between switching from appetizers to our entrees. The red snapper was an absolute delight. This special dish came with penne pasta with red sauce but I substituted for the fettuccine with alfredo sauce. The best fettuccine I've ever had!!! They accommodated our group with a short notice in this busy holiday season. I can't rave enough about how awesome this was!

Service was great and staff was very attentive. Start you off with bread and oil right away. The overall menu is good and not as pricey as originally expected. The burrata and salad we had were great. But the entrees fell a little short. The eggplant/chicken Parmesan both tasted a bit funky and we think it’s the breading and not the chicken or eggplant itself. They both came with penne in tomato and basil sauce which was the highlight - best sauce I have had in quite a while now. Next time I would probably just get a huge bowl of penne and the tomato basil sauce. You can get the dish with fettuccini Alfredo as well. Panna cotta was a great and would order again. The tiramisu on the other hand tasted dry and was a bit hard and the drizzle of Hershey’s chocolate syrup cheapened the whole dish.

Exceptional experience at Prego! The service was fantastic, and the food was delicious. I particularly enjoyed their carbonara dish—it was a standout. The complimentary bread and dip were a delightful surprise that added to the overall enjoyment of the meal.

We had an enjoyable dinner at Prego this evening. Service was excellent. So was our meal. We started with the capresse salad, which we shared. i got the lamb chops, and Mike got the bronzino. Both were delicious. The side of scalloped potatoes was amazing. We would definitely go back!

I love this restaurant so much. I always get the same thing every time: the Carbonara. The fried egg they parade on top of the Carbonara strips the dish of its authenticity as an Italian dish, but it's still AMAZING. The service is always impeccable as well which makes Prego one of my favorite places to go. It may not be cheap, but it's worth ever penny.

This is simply the best restaurant in Houston. We eat here all the time because the food, wine, and service are consistently excellent and superior to other Italian restaurants. The waiters are incredible--they don't even write down your order, and always get it right! The food always arrives piping hot. The chewy sourdough Italian bread is to die for. Desserts are tempting, but we usually don't have room, since the dinner portions are very ample --we often have leftovers for lunch the next day. Sommelier Rafael makes great suggestions from the reasonably priced wine list. Big portions and moderate prices provides excellent value. What more can you ask? I think I will go tonight!

Went there for the first time last night with my fiance for our anniversary dinner. The food was fabulous, we received great service with a server who was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, and we had an incredible bottle of wine. It's hard to find that caliber experience without a hefty price tag. Prego allows you to have that "wow" meal without breaking the bank. We can't wait to go back.

The staff here is incredible! Kathy is the most amazing lady and made our evening delightful! Food was amazing and they had vegan options. So delicious!!

Traveling we always eat local. Found this gem near hotel. Ravioli and veal meatball lasagna were outstanding. The starter cheese plate with Italian meat a wonderful beginning

Amazing wine list from all over the world. The food is amazing and the staff is very helpful when trying to pair wine with food.

We have been coming to this restaurant for 14 years and we drive all the way from the North side of town just to have their awesome food! Just love their prego salad and the pescatore! I only wish they bring back the creme brûlée for dessert!

We have been dining at Prego for over a decade. Always great service, always great food, and always accommodating. Close to home and has a neighborly feel with some nice ambiance. Once you become a regular, it gets even better.

It may cost a bit more but the servings are large, food was great. Two people could eat off one entree. The service was great. It has a good atmosphere but not really a place for young children.
Phillip Stein
Excellent food and service. Highly recommend the seared tuna with pasta

Had excellent Penne Norma on Jan. 12, 2017... along with very attentive staff, cozy atmosphere, and all around amazing experience. Resist the chains and go to Prego in Rice Village

Great food and service! Perfect wine suggestion, and their housemade bread is my favorite!

I have never felt so unwelcome in a restaurant. I went in around 3 pm and I think there was a shift change. There was no one else in the restaurant and was greeted and seated promptly. I ordered pizza and a glass of wine. Wait time was fairly short. The pizza was okay. The dough was a bit tasteless but the toppings were plentiful. The problem was that the waiter kept asking me if I was done and when I finally said yes he cleared away pizza, bread, water, everything. He did leave the wine. But I was hoping to sit a bit and enjoy some of the bread with the rest of my wine. The check was brought to the table immediately and I took that as a symbol that it was time to go. I paid and left. The waiter was outside and leaving in his car as I walked away so I must have been keeping him from leaving somewhere.

We landed up at this one as it had been recommended to us as the best Italian place at Rice, but we strictly found it ok. Service was also strictly ok with our server seeming to be in too much of a hurry, forgetting to provide us side plates and taking some time to get our dishes down correctly. The cocktails were nothing to write home about. In food, we had the Ravioli di anitra and Peperoncino Verde. The food was good, but not outstanding as we had been told. We came out with a mixed feeling, wondering whether we would like to come back here.

My boys and husband searched many a restaurant in Houston for my birthday dinner. They narrowed it down to three and called each to determine if they offered a menu suitable to my dietary restrictions and allergens.

They found one which was rated well and made a reservation, making sure they noted that I had an egg allergy. My husband called earlier today to confirm the reservation and to verify that the chef knew of my egg allergy. Again, the restaurant confirmed they could accommodate.

We arrived and were seated. The waiter saw the egg allergy noted on the reservation and confirmed it with us. Unfortunately, that is where the verification ended. Though I had him check with the kitchen multiple times regarding the presence of egg in the meal, and his confirmation that it didn't, it still had egg in it.

As I was walking out of the restaurant I started to have symptoms and walked back into the restaurant to ask the manager about the meal I ordered and the presence of eggs in it. He went to ask the "cook" and it was confirmed that there were indeed eggs in the meal. This was not good, but I knew I had about 45 minutes to medicate before I would need a trip to the hospital. I just needed confirmation there were eggs.

The real kicker here was that the manager came back and said to me, "Don't lose your head...". What? Really?? This is a life and death situation and he is asking me not to lose my head? Then he said there was " just a little egg" and "it isn't a problem". I didn't know restaurant managers were experts in life threatening food allergies. Wow!

I didn't have time to argue with the guy but told him I needed to get meds. My husband was ready to knock him out but angrily gave the quick and dirty version of the situation as we were walking out the door with the manager asking us what he could do. We replied with, "take allergens seriously!".

I still can't wrap my head around why they didn't take my allergen issues seriously- even after it was written on our reservation, on the order ticket and with multiple trips to the cook (no chef) before ordering.

Needless to say, I was able to get to meds in time and am relaxing comfortably at home as I write this, but what a terrible dinner experience! Most restaurants get it right, but some just don't get it. We don't like to give bad reviews, but folks need to be warned about places that don't have a concern about their guests' personal health and safety.

Prego http://www.prego-houston.com/, shame on you for endangering your dietary restricted customers by not taking their needs seriously.

The bread basket was amazing for the variety you get. The Gnocchi was perfect and I would recommend the rose sauce. The Margherita pizza was pretty good but I prefer fresh basil that hasn't been cooked on top. I didn't try dessert but would love to if in the area. Service was ok but my pizza came out after my gnocchi and I wanted them together. The portion for gnocchi was small for the price.

The food was very good as was the service. However, the noise level was so bad we couldn't hear each other at our table of four. What a disappointing dining experience

Spaghetti Carbonara. Best carbonara anywhere. I order this everywhere I go because I love it but I've had none better than Prego
Steve
One of the best meals I have had in a long time. Hard the duck ravioli with roasted pears and dried cherries in a truffle butter cream sauce. It was orgasmic!!. Superb service oh how I wish I was not from out of town. Congrats on an outstanding establishment

TOO LOUD !!!! Food 6 of10. I had risotto and Chilean sea bass special. average, at best. Other party ordered filet, 6 of ten as well.

I will return. The food was delicious, the service good, and the prices not unreasonable. With the exception of one little ding (my side of squash was cool to room-temperature, and I'm sure it should have been served hot), at a table of eight diners, everyone loved every course. I will definitely return.

The Olive Garden of the Village. Decent food, but should be better for the cost. Need wait staff to be more knowledgeable about wines. Felt rushed and unappreciated.

Review. The atmosphere sets the mood for the meal you will have. It is a comfortable place which is important. The facilities and waiters were nice and also helped the feel. Of course the food was great also.

Prego. An enjoyable place to be. definitely the place for Italian food thin the rice village area. The atmosphere was the most impressive part of the experience with large paintings and pleasant art peices. The service was helpful. The food had larger portions then similar restaurants. I would recommend it for anybody in the area.

Good Food. Overall, I was very impressed with Prego's food and atmosphere. The mushroom ravioli was very flavorful and had a rich sauce. The menu had quite a variety of foods, with many vegetarian and vegan options to choose from. The restaurant was well furnished, and the service was great. I would definitely eat there again.

Prego. This restaurant was petite, but very charming and warm. The atmosphere and facilities were great. And the service was very good and respectful. I got some kind of pasta, and it was pretty good. I am sort of a picky eater, but I was pleased by the pasta. And the presentation was very appetizing. Overall, I would definitely go back to this restaurant.

Prego Italian Cuisine. Prego is an excellent restaurant. The facilities' designs are gorgeous and it is so clean. The food not only smelled deliciousbut tasted delicious. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli (Ravioli Di Zucca). This dish was prepared very nicely and was really good. Their ravioli contained a yummy sweet squash topped with olive oil. It was very filling. The service was fantastic. The people were so nice and the food came out in a good amount of time. Overall, the restaurant was excellent and I highly recommend it.

Overall, I had a very pleasant and enjoyable experience. The service was fast, efficient, and polite, and the environment was clean and well maintained. I ordered the grilled chicken with pasta and it was excellent, especially considering the reasonable
price. Very nice presentation and delicious bread to start the meal with.

I liked my spaghetti, but the meat balls weren't the best. Overall it was a very good restaurant. The pizza was amazing.

The service was great from the very beginning, when they brought out our menus, bread, and water immediately when we sat down. The waiter ordered our good very fast, and the people were all very nice. The restaurant itself was nice, and was in a good area, but I found it strange that the restrooms were hidden behind a wall. A good thing about the restaurant is that your water will NEVER be empty! I ordered the caprisi, and although it was small, I was very tasty! The food came out fairly fast, and tasted ver good! All in all, the place was pretty nice and had nice service!

The venue was very nice and clean. Every table was set when we walked in and immediately water was brought to the table following bread. I got the tanglierini and mine was the last to came out but it was worth the wait. The service was good, always refilling drinks and were very kind.

I had the grilled chicken and it was very tasty. The service was great. The facilities were clean , and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The environment is perfection! I ate the four cheese pizza and I didn't enjoy it much. The bread was fantastic but the cheese on the pizza was so so strong. I do recommend the overall experience though!
Meghan
I had the pollo martellato. The dish was AMAZING and the presentation was very good. The service was excellent and the waitors were very friendly. The facility is very nice and makes you feel like you are eating at a "fancy restaurant." My overall experience was amazing and also the bread was delicious!
Claire
The appearance was very nice and the restaurant had good decor, the waiters were attentive, the bread was fantastic, and the food came out fast, I had some sort of pasta with tomatoes: it looked very nice and it was really tasty and the sauce was very yummy! Overall great experiences good customer service and tasty food

Very good food, but the price was a little higher than the food was worth. Small portions. The $116 bill for two of us was a surprise after ordering some specials. This should probably be listed as a $$$$ place, especially for where it is located.
Mike
Amazing!!! Really good pizZa and sangria..

Saturday night out. Arrived on a busy night without a reservation. The hostess was helpful and gave us a menu and offered a drink ordered while we waited outside on a nearby bench. Very loud inside, the business could use a larger room or more fabric to absorb the sound. No music but that probably helped! We had crab fingers as an appetizers, along with the provided breadbasket and the most delicious garlic infused olive oil to dip it in. A pitcher of sangria with a lot of fruit was a great addition! For dinner we had a spaghetti and meat ball dish, as well as a ravioli with butter nut squash filling with sage and brown butter. Both were delicious, though the ravioli dish was a little small. We finished it off with a chocolate souffle, and house specialty! Very good but again, small amount of ice cream on the side. Our servers including the water serve, bus boy, and dinner server were all fantastic! All in all I would return and recommend it. Though it is relatively expensive for the volume of food, the flavors are very satisfying.

Banal, overpriced, pretentious and deafening. This is your average American Italian eatery - nothing more. Buy some ravioli from Sysco, dowse in canned sauce and you got Prego. If they dropped the prices and got over thier own hype it would be worth a visit. Until then.....

Holy crap. I can't tell you how good the bar service is. Walked up and the tender Kathy came around the bar and took my order. Than brought it outside to us while we waited for our table. Great service and food.

Delicious!!! Easily some of the best Italian food I've ever tasted. And the ambiaunce is wonderful as well, very classy. The staff is very nice and the service is good as well. Overall, Prego's is a great restaurant. :) I give it a 4/5

Great food. I ordered the lasagna with meat balls and it was really good. Should have only eaten half of it but I couldnt stop. Nice atmosphere. Great waiters - one of our group custom ordered his food - it came out exactally how he wanted and we were not charged an enormous amount for the changes. We will be back.

Wonderful Food. Wow. This is my new favorite restaurant, again. I haven't been here for many years, but I went back with my wife and parents tonight and was really impressed. The service was attentive without being obtrusive and the food was divine. They had a wonderful plate of roasted vegetables for my vegan wife. Her only complaint was that she wanted more mushrooms because they were so good. My mom had the duck ravioli, Dad had the veal with spinach and pasta, and I had the branzino with grapefruit and crab. We all raved about how great it was. We shared a flourless chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream and candied walnuts for dessert, and it was to die for. You get a lot of food for your money and the wine prices are reasonable. It's noisy but you can still hold a conversation without shouting at your table. We will be back.

Best Italian ev-ar!. This was one of the Best Italian meals I have ever had, anywhere. Their bread was excellent. My friend and I both had the lasagna and it was so good. Highly recommended!

Below average. Prego's Cesar salad comes came a yucky creamy white tasteless dresssing...romain was not fresh...I requested a topping of feta cheese instead I got a creamy tasteless cheese. They said it was feta cheese mixed with cream cheese. I despise cream chees. I requested feta, not a hybrid. Additionally, the female bartender insisted on defending the hybrid substitute. She should tend bar, not mediate. Don't they know that the customer is always right?
This place served better food when it was One's a Meal...back in the 60's. The best part was when the manager charged only for one glass of house-quality chardonnay...$8.00 for sub-standard quality wine...My over-all opinion is that this place relies simply on being in the Village ... and not good food ...location, location, location

Good food, difficult parking. Went there for a business lunch which was in the private room behind the kitchen, so can't comment on dining room service. Food was good, though there were a few negatives. The first was that several diners were asked if they wanted a house or ceasar salad with their lunch, so they assumed it was complimentary, but then we got the bill they were charged $8 ea. Also, parking is difficult as it is for anyplace in the Village at lunch time. However, we did enjoy the food and the privacy of the back room. They waived the $250.00 minimum for the private room, which was nice, turned out to be a moot point since our bill ended up coming out to about $340.00 for 10 people.

Good italian. The butternut squash ravioli was great.

Great Staff. This place was great! We had a large group and our waiter was fantastic. Very nice decor, a little loud but it was a great atmosphere. The Red Snapper was great.

All appeared peachy until my dining companion's lack of limb control took its toll. How hard is it to open your mouth, eat, and control your arms as if to not do the stretch yawn combo every 14 seconds? This is the same service industry rule breaking rookie that performed the server attention getting menu wave only weeks ago. This mini menu wave is comparable to whistling while finger snapping, only to use one foot for chef kicking, while the other swiftly trips a hostess with the mostess. Moving right along… As we perused the menu, all ears began to burn while snooping our closest table neighbor's drink order conversation. I'm sorry, if it takes almost 2 minutes to explain 1 drink order to your server, you should be forcibly escorted out of the building, placed inside a non courtesy cab, only to be thrown out directly in fro
