Review Barnaby's Cafe - Houston

Excellent food. Prices have increased a bit since the last time we visited but overall the food was worth it.

BEST BURGER EVER!!!!!! I do need to mention that not everything on their website is on the menu, so I took pictures instead. I ordered the blue cheese bacon burger with waffle fries with an iced tea, the burger was TOO GOOD! And perfectly cooked, the cheese was so creamy, the bacon was nice and crispy and just melted in your mouth, the buns were perfectly roasted and even looked handmade. The only downside was that they gave me regular fries instead of waffle fries, so I mentioned it and they immediately fixed it, letting me have the regular AND the waffle fries for FREE, also the fries were perfectly seasoned with something similar to cajun blackened seasoning and they were also fried perfectly, so crunchy yet fluffy on the inside. The waitress was super kind and when you asked for anything extra like sauces, ice, lemons, she gave you A LOT, I absolutely loved it, like she drowned me in ranch that was also tasting homemade and very tasty. When she brought me lemon, she brought the same amount of lemon slices in a WHOLE LEMON just for my tea! Everyone was very charismatic and looked like they were having fun, but I will also say that the place was packed, so I'd probably reserve first just in case you're bringing more than two people with you. I would rate it 4.9/5.0 just because of the mess up, but again, the food was absolutely MIND BLOWINGLY AMAZING, you get so much for your money. But I'm not done, when I got a box for my left overs my waitress gave me the BIGGEST TOGO TEA I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I'm just a tourist visiting Houston, but I would 100% come back for this food alone.

I think this may have been my first time eating at this location. I loved it! Very nice facility and the service was awesome. Food was fresh and really good, too! Even the fries with that delicious seasoning on top. Looking forward to going back again.

Everything about this place is fantastic i cannot say enough good things about this restaurant, The food was amazing, the service was phenomenal, and the staff was really friendly!

I had lunch today at Barnaby’s. I ordered the Chinese Chicken salad. My friend suggested that I order a small salad and have them serve it in a large bowl. It was the perfect size! I wasn’t aware that they would allow that. They happily did exactly that. It was so delicious; lots of chicken and delicious crunchiness. I will order that again. Always have enjoy both the food and experience of dining at Barnaby’s.

Everything about this place is fitting for me. The staff are by far my favorite and so welcoming, inclusive and loving the moment you walk in. Every time I ask for a recommendation, I get more than what I expected (sooo yummy). I’ve had the chicken Cesar salad, turkey burger, mushroom burger and carrot cake. I recommend ALL of them. I am turning into a favorite when my budget allows eating out.

I think the nicest humans on earth work here. We took our new baby when he was just a few weeks old and they were so kind and accommodating, even when he was fussy. It's one of the very few places we've found that has a changing table in the men's AND women's bathrooms! We've started going once to twice a week and always just love the food we get (I especially get cravings for the tuna burger and french dip) and occasionally indulge in the apple pie served with Amy's Mexican vanilla ice cream 🤤 Every server we've had had been lovely and hospitable. Our new neighborhood favorite 💙

This is by far one of the most welcoming and friendly restaurants I've ever been to! I went during pride month and loved how decked out it was with decorations 🫶🏽 The service was incredible and we really appreciated how attentive the staff was. The food of course was also really flavorful and the burger I got was cooked to perfection! I'm typically not even a burger person and I really enjoyed my bacon burger👌🏼 the portions are very generous too so go in hungry !! I also got their chocolate chip cookie to go and it was the perfect sweet treat to finish off with 😌 wish I lived in houston to stop by more often but I'll be back next time I'm in town! ☝🏼

Whenever we can we always try to come to a barnabys location since their food is so good and great people working here.

we had a hearty lunch with good portions for the kids and a one-of-a-kind home made lasagna for me. the staff is upbeat and invested in making it a great time for their guests!

You can never go wrong with Barnaby’s! Made a quick stop here for some coffee and ended up getting some dessert, too. You have to try the apple pie! It comes with a scoop of ice cream. Great service and good atmosphere.

The food was good. If you ask the waiter questions about the menu, he should direct you to the QR code that takes you to a detailed menu. We assumed the QR code would take us to the same menu. After we ordered, we discovered the QR and were surprised at the detail. It’s time for a remodel. A little boy sitting near us kept wanting to leave because of some scary looking doll painted on the ceiling. Our vintage vinyl seat was torn and uncomfortable.

Large Falafel Salad this time. I have had other salads as well and they are all fantastic. The lady on the next table was celebrating her birthday so they Waiter treated her to a humongous slice of fancy carrot cake. I ordered an "ArnoldPalmer" and was real good. I was also provided with a jar of lemonade for refill. Recommended yes. Cheers.

First time going there today and it was amazing. My guac burger had actual fresh homemade delicious guac on it. The queso and chips were on perfectly heated and salted. The Coke Zero was refreshing and not watered down. The music and service were on point. I will be back!

We were looking for a place in the area for a late breakfast. Note: the location on West Gray does NOT serve breakfast. We decided to stay anyway. I am a huge fan of lasagna, but very picky about it so I’m often disappointed by ordering it at a place I’ve never been and especially a place that isn’t an Italian restaurant. But I tried it anyway. It’s pricey at $17 but it is a diner sized portion. It was amazing! Pasta was cooked perfectly, lots of meat in the sauce and lots of melted cheese inside and on top-not ricotta like so many restaurants over use because it’s cheaper. The tomato sauce has chunks of tomatoes and a rich authentic flavor. I couldn’t even eat half of it so the price Is reasonable since I can make at least two meals out of it. Also, the fresh lemonade, which was served in a glass milk bottle, filled almost three glasses and was only one dollar more that a bottomless glass of iced tea. It tastes like my Grandma used to make- just the right combination of sweet and tart. I loved it! My husband had the chicken tinga torta . It was stacked high with chicken and came with a ton of fries. He really liked it. I highly recommend the West Gray location. The staff were friendly and attentive and the restaurant was clean. The parking lot is small so park on the street of you’re on a time crunch.

They took away the carnitas torta and I was devastated. That was hands down one of my favorite tortas in Houston. People were always surprised my favorite torta wasn't at a Mexican place. With that said, the food is still delicious, the servers are great and the atmosphere was exactly what I wanted on a rainy Sunday night. The Luna lasagna is great and they make a solid bison burger. If you're a lemonade person, it's also great.

Yummy and Solid Results!<br/><br/>Good ingredients, modern menu. Each of the Barnabys’ brands are unique and outstanding. Some locations are noisy than others, and each has different menu options. A plus, they are dog friendly.

One of my favorite spots to eat breakfast with my pet in Houston! Maybe a little of wait since but it is worth it....because the service is GREAT and the food is DELICIOUS! We had basically everything in the menu THE MIGAS, THE RANCHEROS, THE WAFFLES ALL IS GREAT! They have great service they are pet lovers since the theme is about Barnaby the dog. JUST LOVE it..

While visiting Houston we wanted to spend some time reconnecting with family in a comfortable spot midway between their home and our hotel. Our nephew chose Barnaby's Cafe. What a treat.<br/><br/>The help was friendly and seemed to actually enjoy their jobs (a feeling easy to lose when you deal with the general public, admit it). The food ranged from traditional to quirky, but we scored the dishes a perfect 4 of 4. Each dish was unique, fresh, delicious and the servings were large enough to take a meal home for later.<br/><br/>The ambiance was homey, bright, and comfortable. No over loud music to talk over, and no push to get us out.<br/><br/>I've already told my friends in Houston to try Barnaby's if they haven't already and I look forward to my next visit!!<br/><br/>BTW, wondering why the name, the staff told us that Barnaby was the owners childhood pet. Truth or legend? No matter. It's a good story.<br/><br/>And don't worry, there are 7 locations and I'd be willing to bet that the quality is the same at each!

Had the Chinese chicken salad and guest had the "ä real good salad" but he cant remember the name. Energy was great, food was great, service was attentive but not intrusive. IN and out in 45 before our meeting. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Good first impression Houston.

I really really like Barnaby’s Cafe.  It’s easy, casual and has something for everyone.  In fact, it’s on my Favorite Houston Restaurants list!. We’re reviewed the Museum District location and the River Oaks location… but now it’s time for the Midtown location!. All the Barnaby’s are fun, funky and named for the owner’s childhood pal, the sheepdog named Barnaby, and is full of sheepdog art.
Jenna
Great menu options and love that it's dog-friendly. Never been disappointed. Oh and get the sweet potato fries!!<br/><br/>Got the buffalo burger today. Light on flavor but that's probably because buffalo meat is a lot lower in fat than beef.

This place is always busy. Parking can be tricky anywhere in Montrose but this location is my favorite. I ordered the Pesto Chicken Salad sandwich. Everything came out great and the portions are huge! I had plenty to save for lunch the next day. Great place to go for an inexpensive meal and big servings. I will be going back.

This is my goto restaurant in Houston, great food, great vibe, a solid place to get a great meal. When in doubt Barnaby's is the answer! The burgers are to die for, and always get the sweet potato fries!

Omg I'll be back again! After the fail of trying to go to Lankfords, we decided on Barnaby's. And I'm so glad we did. I ordered the full Cobb salad for my entree and avocado with chips for an appetizer. My sister ordered the veggie burger with sweet potato fries. When I tell you the portions are enormous!! I was not expecting this much food. This has to be the largest salad I've ever had anywhere. I couldn't even eat half of it. So I'll be eating salad for dinner!! My sister only ate half her veggie burger and a portion of her sweet potato fries. Everything had to be bagged for later. But the food is really good. That's probably the second best Cobb salad I've ever had. There's shredded chicken, a good portion of lettuce, bacon, egg, red onion, tomato, a few black olives and blue cheese chunks. The blue cheese dressing was so smooth and not over whelming with blue cheese flavor. It was perfect! I tried one of their huge rice Krispy treats just because I haven't eaten one since I was a kid. It tasted very home made. You could taste the corn syrup and homey ingredients. It was really delicious. I'll definitely come back here.

Burger was great. Its a cool little Saturday afternoon lunch spot. I love it... the burger, which I got a spinach and feta burger, was the best I've had in a long time. It was all fresh vegetables and the meat didn't seem heavy and weighed down. Anyways, the pink lemonade was freshly squeezed, it was good. Service wasn't really am issue, didn't need her for anything but to bring the food, give me the check, and bring my carrot cake to go.

Great food-icy experience!. We have been going to Barnaby's on West Gray for several years now. The food and staff is outstanding! The last few times we have gone there the temperature in the restaurant was freezing. Many of our fellow diners complained, but to no avail. Tonight it was so cold several people went out to there cars to get sweaters and jackets! When we told a manager about our concerns we were told that a lock box had been put on the thermostat and they had no key. Well, even though the food was hot when it arrived at the table it was too cold to finish half of it.<br/> As much as we enjoy dining there, we would hate to have stop over such a fixable problem.

I've visited two Barnaby's locations and each time it was consistent, friendly service with tasty food. The overall environment is great!

Great Patio. First time burgers were great and love the dog friendly patio. We're always looking for new places to bring our Shelties.
Randiscrapemail
Tasty food. This place surprised me. The food had great flavor and everything was very fresh. The salads are HUGE! The orange juice is freshly squeezed. It's great food at a good price.

Come hungry!. Huge portions and choice preparation, full of American classics you actually don't see much on casual dining menus. You just have fun here and it's a great place to go with friends.
Sheri Shoemake
Our favorite restaurant. We drive from Sugar Land to eat there. My daughter loves the sticky chicken wontons. Love the atmosphere
Wasem N Gawish
Great local restaurant. Funky and relaxing.

Good food, good variety, good atmosphere. Parking situation is a little bad, but non issue unless you go during peak hours.

Friendly and Delicious. I love the atmosphere - casual, great wait staff, and friendly, dog friendly too! The food has all been amazing, (I particularly like the sweet potato fries) and anywhere I can take my beloved pug with me get bonus points. It is a little too crowded on Sundays though, but I just avoid the Sunday brunch time frame.

Had the Chicken La Jolla and it was delicious. The chicken had a great grilled flavor and was very moist. It was my first time and will definitely go again.

Female Waitress's. Service is the best of you get one of the guy's. Three of us went again last night (one of our favorite places) and we had the unpleasent exxperience once again of a female waitress. We started out with warm ice tea, only 3 little ice cube's floating on top. Not very friendly, don't know if we ever saw a smile. We had to ask for glasses of ice to cool our drinks down. Her pitcher of tea for refills had no ice in it at all, so all we ever got from her was warm tea. We ended the meal with a recession brownie, that we love. The guys always give you a decent small scoop, the girls try to give you the smallest amount of ice possible. Needless to say, our tip reflected our pleasure with this meal. Never again will I allow a female to wait on us there. We have had 5 bad experiences and it really ruins the pleasure of the meal.<br/>We love our meals there with the guys!!!

High price for mediocrity.. It was hard to decide whether to "like" this place or not. The food looked so good on my plate but the burger I got was so overpowered with beef I couldn't taste anything else. Also, the sweet potato fries weren't cooked right and tasted slightly burnt. I didn't pay but I felt bad that my mediocre meal cost someone else almost $15. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone but it's not the worst place you could find yourself eating.

It's ok. Nothing special. Interior is a lil too old

Tasty Brunch in Upper Montrose. The perfect spot for a Sunday brunch, but arrive before noon if you would like to be seated upon arrival. The staff will recognize you after you eat there a few times and the service is nice and quick, even during the most crowded parts of the day. Their sandwiches are nothing short of heavenly, especially their felafel burger, and their lemonade is one of the best that I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. Mixed cuisine with Southern hospitality.

Great Breakfast Place. Food terrific, prices reasonable, staff awesome! Green Eggs 8 dollars, 2 cups of coffee 4 bucks, breakfast with my son @ Barnaby's (Montrose) PRICELESS! The juice squeezer is pretty cool, too.
Nat
Delicious+Reasonable Prices=AWESOME. I went to Barnaby's for the first time last week and ever since eating there, I have craved to try many more things from their amazing menu. I had the cobb salad- and I must say, it was the most beautiful and delicious cobb salad I've ever layed my eyes on! All the freshest ingredients & killer honey mustard. I looked around at other people's dishes and they all looked fabulous. This is a great find that also has reasonable prices. I think that the prices are very good for the quality of food that's being served.

GRrreeeaattt Food !!!. This is one of the best places in town to eat. There are several locations, I been to all of the location except the San Felipe restaurant. Everything on the menu is delicious and the taste is consistent. One my favorite places to eat out. Friendly and knowledgable staff. Highly Recommend
Flyairdave
While the food is good, they have raised the prices too high.

Cozy!. I loved the atmosphere here. Service was fabulous. This was my first visit. We had the spinach and artichoke dip which was delicious. Lemonade was good and it was served in a large glass bottle resembling an old school milk bottle so I could refill my glass anytime.<br/><br/>I had the meatloaf and it was good BUT I don't think I'd get it again because the tomato sauce on top was sweet and I don't like sweet tomato sauce. I would definitely return as there were several things on the menu that I'd like to try.

Can't go wrong!

Always a favorite. Who cares about whether or not its gay or straight...food is food and theirs is excellent! why complain about huge portions when the prices are already reasonable...sharing would make your lunch even cheaper. their thai chicken salad is amazing. their french fries are addicting! their breakfast over the weekend is also to die for. if youre not going to this restaurant b/c of the decor or "gay" affiliation its too bad for you....more food for me!
Alvin
Very kid-friendly environment. Chicken was moist with flavor and the portion was barn-size large! A slight delay of service on a busy Friday nigh. But that won't keep me from visiting them again!
Wendy Nelson
Bring meatloaf back, please. In all the years that i have been eating @ barnabys, i always get meatloaf or burger. both great. i really wish you would bring back this, and the lassagna, my husbands favorite. please pass on this message to the owner of barnabys. thank you, wendy

Mrs. Byrd is obvioulsy a bigot. Her review has nothing to do with food or service, only a perceived "gay decor." why even publish a prejudiced review like this?
Michael Park
Didn't live up to the hype. We had the waffle fries with a blue cheese fondue... It was rich and tasty. But when our chicken entrees arrived (I had the Newport and she tried the Mill Valley), they were really too big. The meat was dry and the spices didn't make up for it. The prices weren't high, but we still felt like it was more than it was worth. The spiced apples that came with the chicken were good, as was the lemonade. Still, we can't help wishing we'd gone elsewhere for dinner.
Howard Huffstutler
Usually great food and service. Today it seemed the kitchen was running a bit HOT on food temp. Noticed a number of people complaining that their food was either burnt or over cooked, mine included. This is not the norm for Barnaby's. (we all have off days) I still highly recommend a visit to this festive eatery. Cheers!
Grant Ephross
The price. Is great. very cheap for the high quality food you get in return. they have great burgers and their blue cheese fries are amazing.
Jaypea
Every time I've been to any of their locations I've enjoyed the food and the colorful attitudes of the waitstaff. Salads were huge and a little different than your usual salad options. Will keep coming back.<br/><br/>Good Times!

Dog and Human Heaven. Very Inexpensive. GREAT burgers and salads. Delightful Service and a welcoming environment.<br/>HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT!!!!!!!!!
John
Cant go wrong. This place has my vote for the best fries in town. I highly recommend ordering a side of honey mustard with your fries. The salads are huge and delicious. I think my favorite menu item is the blue cheese fondue waffle fries. Great burgers, meatloaf, fish, ect.
Nikmartinez1
So good. The portions are GINORMOUS, i can never finish. The spinach and feta burger is my favorite, but the general tso's chicken, and the chicken dishes are wonderful. the french fries are always hot and crispy. the lemonade is great. breakfast here is also a treat.
Dareon
Try the Spinach Dip. Great selection of a variety of foods including burgers, salads, chicken, and seafood. The Spinach Dip is infamous, I highly recommend it!
Chad Brawley
GREAT food and service. I tried to try Hobbit Cafe. It was TERRIBLE--so much so-I had to leave because I got NO service. Back to what I KNOW is good. Barnabys.
Greg
Awesome!. Cool atmosphere, buzzing with people and life. great classic american favorites, my favorite place to eat in houston.
Cameron Crabtree
This place rocks gay décor get the lemanade
Mrs. Byrd
Gay Decor. The theme is based on a deceased dog decorated with the gay rainbows. There's a big cartoon picture of the dog wearing his rainbow gear in San Francisco.

Usually great but awful service today

Here’s what really chapped my hide about Barnaby’s. I’ve been trying to read more of the free magazines around Houston – FPH, Houston Press, these are the only two I know off the top of my head; anything but 002 Magazine really. Outside Barnaby’s there was a glossy magazine labeled Houston: Best of the City 2012. Being secretly a magpie I’ll take anything that’s shiny enough, and I hurriedly squirreled it away in my purse for further reading. Can you compare yourself to a squirrel and a magpie in the same sentence? Not important. Anyway, so I flip to the section advertised on the cover, the 101 Coolest People, Places, and Things in H-Town right now. Let me just first say that I hate when people say H-Town. It’s only OK if you’re a rapper or want to be a rapper. It’s only one character longer to say Houston rather than H-Town! They weren’t saving any space on the cover, they were just being ridiculous. -18 The worst part is the article in question! Of all the 101 things that are awesome
