Review Tropics Bar & Grill - Honolulu

Denis Crowder
Huge and tasty breakfast. I had a fluffy meat omelet that was not too greasy. Great service. With bottomless coffee option. Eating outdoors is usually a good thing. They do make an effort to keep birds out with netting, but there were still too many. Still a good vibe right on the beach.

This was the first place we ate when arriving in Hawaii! I had the ribs, my wife had the popcorn shrimp, and our son had the spicy sweet and sour chicken! Everything was amazing! When the chicken was a little too spicy for our son, they re-made it without the sauce. First class service!!! We will definitely dine here more!

Tropics is fabulous! We ate there twice during our 4-day stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Gardens resort because it was so tasty. The poke nachos were HUGE, and every bite was delicious. The burger with the brisket and bacon on it was insanely good too. For drinks, I recommend getting their version of an Arnold Palmer with pineapple juice instead of lemonade. Considering we went at very busy times, they accommodated us super fast and even got us a lovely outdoor table near the beach when we requested one. The service was fantastic! Cindy in particular was the absolute best and was so sweet. The restaurant is open air, but it was super hot or anything inside. The ambiance is very chill even when it was busy. I highly recommend giving this place a shot!

Best meal at the village. The evening views are picture perfect. Waygu Brisket was done well. Excellent drinks both times we were there. The staff is professional and helpful. Overall great ambiance.

Restaurant is located in the Hilton resort and looks right onto the beach. I was worried about visiting since the reviews weren’t too good but we were satisfied with our food and the service. I had the coconut shrimp which had 7 large shrimp and a huge portion of tater tots. My partner (vegetarian) had the veggie pasta which he enjoyed, and I actually liked it more than my shrimp. Prices are high as it’s a resort, but the portions were also very large. I’d recommend splitting a meal here given the price and portion size. Service was great, food came out fast.

Ate here about 4 times over the last 2 weeks. Great beachside restaurant by Hilton Hawaiian village. Can’t beat the location. The food is reliable and great. Their burgers are great. Colleagues had the poke bowel and said it was way too spicy for them, but still good. The portions are classic large American sizes - you’ll likely be taking home leftovers. The prices are high but normal for location in Hawaii. Expect mains to be around 27-45 USD, cocktails 15-17, beers 10-16 USD. Drinks are generously poured and delicious. The staff are friendly and service was good all times we went. Tamara was particularly great. A celiac / gluten free colleague was with us and ate here twice - poke bowl and burger with fries, and had no issues. I was super surprised but apparently the fries were safe for them. A great experience.

The food is amazing! We've eaten breakfast several times here during our stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. We've tried multiple offerings and have not been disappointed. The Ube pancakes and Poi Pullman French toast were delicious.

The restaurant is located inside the hilton waikiki village resort. The parking is limited the garage or outside the village. The decor is nice. There is outdoor dining which is nice. The staff is very friendly and patient. The food has been pretty good. Love the Loco moco and the burger.

I don’t know why this place isn’t rated higher?? The service was fast, food was delicious! My hubby had ribs that literally fell off the bone, I had a salad with balsamic dressing and shrimp. Sooo good! Plus the waitress was very nice!

In my opinion, Tropics Bar and Grill is a restaurant that shines best at night due to its stunning ocean views. At night, the restaurant exudes a romantic ambiance, with the fire torch lights adding to the enchanting atmosphere. While the food is decent, I wasn't too impressed with it. However, the breathtaking view of the dark ocean and Hilton hotels next door combined with the cool breeze outside makes it a worthwhile visit. My partner and I make it a point to have dinner here at least once whenever we're in Honolulu, and we are never disappointed. I highly recommend giving it a try!

Title: A Tropical Paradise Exceeding Expectations. The Tropics Bar and Grill situated within the verdant landscapes of the Hilton Hawaii is truly a hidden gem. The instance you step into this tropical oasis, you'd be hit by a delightful wave of exotic serenity. The establishment seamlessly marries the idyllic beauty of Hawaii with the leisurely comfort of a top-notch bar and grill. The ambiance radiates an enticing vibe that makes you feel right at home while the breathtaking ocean view soothes your senses, making it an ideal spot for a casual beachside brunch or a romantic sunset dinner. The outdoor seating is a silent testament to the exquisite locale, allowing you to feast your eyes on the azure Aegan whilst savoring their delectable offerings. The menu exemplifies culinary expertise, showcasing an enticing mix of American classics and local Hawaiian delicacies. The seafood is fresh as the ocean breeze, and their 'Hawaiian-inspired Nachos' is a clear standout; a harmonious symphony of flavors that dance on your palate. Their drinks menu is impressive with an array of exotic cocktails and local brews, providing the ideal gustatory companion in the Hawaiian heat. What truly sets Tropics Bar and Grill apart, however, is the exceptional level of service. The staff beam with the warm 'Aloha' spirit that Hawaii is famous for. Attentive yet unobtrusive, they are committed to ensuring an unforgettable dining experience. So if you're looking for a heavenly gastronomic experience, backed by a passionate team, infused with the rustic charm of Hawaii, all set in an iconic location, then Tropics Bar and Grill at the Hilton Hawaii should be your stop. Truly, an experience like no other, promising not just a meal, but a memorable journey for the senses. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a great place to stop in for a tasty snack & beverage or a full blown meal. It was just a stop in for us so we got Mai Tai's(sss) & shredded pork Nachos! Um YUM!! Loved the whole vibe here. Front row table to Benkama Music duo, EXCELLENT! Perfect setting & view of this gorgeous beach AND a perfect spot for people watching! HIGHLY recommend!!

We came here twice. Both times for drinks, but one of the times we ended up getting a snack. It's definitely a nice atmosphere and the service is good. However, the chicken wings weren't that good. They were absolutely huge, which normally wouldn't be a complaint from me, but I think they were just too much. Definitely way too much breading, and we didn't really enjoy either of the two flavors we ordered. I was after a traditional Domino's Pizza style hot wing, so it didn't hit the mark for me. Very poor planning on the part of the restaurant when it came to the Fireworks night, too. Maybe they're having staffing issues, but the place was half empty and could have been completed packed with the till going ka-ching every 3 seconds. Instead, we waited 70 minutes for a seat on the patio while drinking at the bar, which became available right after the Fireworks ended. Overall, it was good.

Good food excellent service and amazing coffee do I need to say more! Would highly recommend! They have beautiful bird free atmosphere. Our waiter Ramfis was awesome funny and read our minds, always 1 step ahead of what we were going to ask for! 10/10

The service was ok but disappointed with the food. More of a frozen food taste than a real fresh taste. It was overpriced for the quality of food.

Food ok, service terrible. Nothing like a waiter leaning over the table to place dishes and pick up the empties! Not! Price was high for what you got. Best thing was the live acoustic duo and the beach location. If your hungry for a feed and do not want to leave the resort it will pass and wont kill you.
if you have time try someplace else then highly recommend that. Pizza was sparse on toppings, the signature burger was for blue cheese lovers only and the pork was good but the hit of chilli needed a followup of a beer.
Nina
Super duper Puiho burger. Deeeelish!! Omg thier Chicken Nachoes with Pineapple salsa! I wish they sold the salsa I would have brought home a container! This grill is located inside the Hawaiiin village resort, it's not cheap , but being within seconds of Waikiki beach with a fabulous view and great food. It was worth it.

Good service, thier iced tea had something oddly tasty about it some kind of herb or syrup , but it was refreshing.

No complaints.

We were told to wait 15mins even though there were heaps of tables available.
Service was very friendly and relatively fast.
Awesome view, relaxing atmosphere and conveniently located inside the Hilton hotel resort.
Pineapple ginger ice tea was nice but tasted more like pineapple juice.
Early grey tea was really bad, had a funny taste.
Fried onion ring is ok.
Grilled mahi mahi was fish with grilled veggies and steam rice. The menu was a bit misleading as we didn't realize mahi mahi was a fish name. There wasn't a lot of veggies and the broccolini was overcooked.

This restaurant is on the hotel grounds of the Hilton Hawaiian village and has a Chili's feel to it just from appearance. However, the atmosphere is much quieter and the service is mediocre at best.

It took quite a while for our food and to receive our check to pay and sign after. The food was pretty good. The kalua pork and pineapple pizza was awesome and they mix up a pretty good Adios. Its on the beach so you have a pretty good view of the water and Diamond Head depending on where you're seated. This restaurant is good for grabbing decent food if you're not looking to venture outside of Hawaiian Village.

Visit date 5/7/2014

Just the standard american meal with a nice location, particularly outside on a warm evening. Food is fresh, I went for the fish sandwich which had great flavours. Not much else to say for this one, its definitely a decent visit for a meal.

We ate here a couple of times as we were staying at the Hilton Hawaiian village. Service was really great and always fast which is what we look for when we dine out with a toddler. The kids meal come with a toy, drink and dessert and are cheap - half price btw 5-6pm on certain nights! The main meals were ok, not spectacular but still tasty. Big shout out to the buffalo chicken pizza - YUM!!! The desserts wee great, we tried both brownie and cheesecake during our stay and weren't disappointed.

While staying in Waikiki my friend and I came to the Tropic's Bar & Grill for breakfast. There was plenty of food to choose from, but as a traveler you sometime want something simple after all the foods you have been eating. We ended up just getting the toast and jelly (jams) selection, an orange juice each and a coffee (which was terrible). We were confused with the choice of Canadian bacon; and when we asked the waiter he said it was round, so we initially thought it was the eye of the cut. Turns out it was spam and it wasn't very nice. But the atmosphere of the bar and grill was great and looked out over Waikiki beach.

The cocktails here are fantastic! I stopped here for a couple of cocktails and watching the sun set. Just perfect!

I would say the Kalua Pork burger is the most delicious burger I have ever tasted, it just melts in your mouth! I would just go back to Hawaii just to have it again! Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice. Highly recommend it.
Food 2 Run

Service terrible would it be so hard as to smile. Forget happy hour you spend the whole time waiting for a table in a empty resturant!!!!!

Happy with the entire trip except for Paula. My stay in Waikiki was incredible. Hospitable people, amazing atmosphere, friendly travellers and so on. The only downside I must complain about is a server named Paula at the Tropic's Bar and Grill at Hilton Hawaiian Village.

She rushed us, her vibe was not so kind and the thing that truly set me off, was that I'm paying big bucks to stay at this fine hotel, and they have staff like Paula who didn't allow me to use an electrical outlet to plug in my phone. I was waiting for an important business call and as a traveller, an electrical outlet is essential. I asked to speak to a manager and she denied me, that's when I had it.

Please note, management, that this is how I was treated. Thanks, Paula!

Just to first address some of the other negative reviews: this is a resort. You shouldn't expect reasonable prices. We had a burger and the Chinese chicken salad, two Mai Tais and a 5-0 cocktail. Drinks were tasty and lethal. Salad and live music was good, burger and service were great. Good choice for the Hilton Hawaiian Village when you first arrive.

Food is fair at best. It has gone down in quality and service over the past year. Hamburger is probably the best choice here. HHV should fix it as it used to be great.

Disappointing food. We were seated inside which defeated the purpose of the visit, which was to absorb the beach atmosphere and enjoy the live band. The band didn't play for most of our meal and when they did it wasn't easy to hear inside. Having walked by when they were in full swing they seemed pretty good.

The staff at the front were unfriendly.

Our server was great/friendly but was run off his feet. There were not enough servers for the number of patrons.

The food was awful:
1. Half pound burger with fries - the fries were overcooked and way too salty. I was asked how I'd like my burger done, impliying it had a piece of steak inside. Asking for medium well, I was served a medium rare mince beef patty which tasted similar to frozen burgers one finds in the supermarket. The bun was cold as if it had just come out of the fridge. My understanding is that mince meat should always be served well done due to the health risks of eating undercooked mince. It did not agree with me..

2. Onion rings - incredibly oily. Best avoided.

In conclusion I'd consider going back after dinner for a drink to listen to the band but wouldn't eat there again. It was expensive as expected, given its location within the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Tropics is awesome!! Atmosphere was fun and festive with cool tiki flame torches. Some nights they have live band which was nice touch. Service was good. Easy to get to on Hilton Hawaiian Village property. Not expensive- reasonably priced. Stir fry and ribs were our favorite. We went twice for dinner. Only bad thing is about 20-30 minute wait during dinner hours. They offer free wifi during your meal

Touristic Trap. Inside the Hilton area, nice food, what could we expect about the prices? Really expensive for the food they are serving. And very lazy waiters don't make the experience better, of course.

Decent food for the location and price. Ahi poke was good as was the catch of the day.

My wife and I found this spot while walking and stopped in. We were seated promptly and food came out fast. The food is pricy, HI is pricy I wasn't too surprised at the high prices. Wait staff was friendly for both lunch and dinner.

Aside from the typical high-priced hotel restaurant menu items, I really can't understand the negative reviews. Their service is friendly is hectic and plates very good. The seared Ahi salad is fresh and very generous; the apps and soups or salads are all delicious and the entries like tofu and NY strip well prepared with local ingredients. I'd go back were it not for the plethora of restaurants to sample. Their breakfast too is pricey but very good and not unreasonable for the resort area.

Good place for music and if you like expensive drinks. Bad place for a reasonably priced dinner. We got the Hawaiian pizza and fish & chips- nothing special and ridiculously over priced. My $17 pizza ended up being a personal size pizza. The only nice thing was our 11 month old son enjoyed the music, tiki flames and when he fussed no one else was disrupted.
Elif
Very bad. Horrible service, absurd prices, and terrible food. A cup of coffee is $9. It's a ripoff, you'd be much better off walking down the beach a bit further for a much better experience.

Service was good and the Mai Tais are amazing! The food is ok.
TheFREEquentTraveler
Overprice for mediocre food. Go to Dukes for better food, service and value for your dollar.

This place is rediculous. Our experience here was more than disappointing. With 10 tables open on the patio and all but a few inside, the hostess gave us a 15 minute expected wait time. We waited for over 30 minutes. We asked to talk to the manager and the hostess said she was the manager. They finally seated us. Every waiter, including our own, seemed to be moving incredibly slow, though the food came out super fast. The food was decent but nothing great. Several tables sat empty around us during happy hour though when we were leaving there were about 4 groups waiting to be seated. I'd eat there again for the food if it weren't for the service. They definitely need new management.

Tried two different servers, both were terrible. The drinks and food were mediocre at best. Sad since I would expect better than sub-par service from the Hilton

Busy Busy Busy. Getting a table here is painful, not because they don't have tables available but because Hilton don't have the staff to deal with all the sections. Had a light lunch here and the food was great, the service was slow because of the staffing levels. A common theme on this resort.

Good quality, but pricy.. I ate here because I was staying at the resort on business. This was also the first time I went to Hawaii and I was trying to eat some local food, but the food was sooo good here. I wish I could have taken a pic of the edemame hummus dish because it was the best ever! The combo of hummus and crunch of edemame along with olive oil was amazing! I also had the ahi tuna salad which was very good. I had to ask for just lemon slices to use as my dressing, though, because the wasabi dressing was waaayyy too much for me. The french toast (plain with no icecream or other junk) was really good. It looks very different from the french toast on the mainland, but very good. My husband had the fruit platter for breakfast and it was great! The papaya served as the bowl for the other fruit and the squeeze of lime juice was perfect. The shrimp basket was very good too. BUT if I would have been there for personal travel, there is no way I would have eaten there as many times as I did. I think the cheapest meal I had was breakfast for 1 which was over $34.
Jen R.
We ordered the burger and a pizza. Very disappointed on both. I would recommend this place for live music and drinks, but not for a good dinner.
TreasureForever
Too, too, too expensive very unnecessarily why would anyone want to throw money away like that. Poor experience.
Susan Schaben
Food sucks. Expected good food at the Hilton, but it was horrible. I ordered the pasta with meat sauce and it tasted like a greasy hamburger. Exchanged for the pasta with tomato sauce and it tasted overcooked and exactly like jar sauce. Not kidding. All this for $19. The worse ever. Do not eat here. Just have drinks. Waiter was awesome and beautiful location and great band.
Jeff Caynon
Strictly average dinning. The service was good on both occasions when I went there. The best thing about this place is the band!

Reasons to eat here: 1) Friday night fireworks over ocean after Hilton's poolside show (fireworks about 7:50pm) 2) fans of Hawaii Five-O might have seen the patio in the show (2/23/2011 Hawaii five-o taped on the patio here. In the scene the commander Steve had his arm in a sling as dud the BIG dude in the yellow shirt). 3) food was good, but not exceptional. There is also usually live music on the patio stage (during the five-o taping the "music" on stage was a silent ukulele & silent guitar... That's okay since the audience made a silent applause afterwards).
Farmboy77
Horrible food and even WORSE service! The servers cannot follow even the simplest of directions.

This is the place where I tried Hawaiian Poke for the first time. It is raw ahi fish that is marinated in sea salt, olive oil, and herbs. I didn’t initially pick this dish for myself; the bartender sort of suggested it, and ordered it before I could even say yea or nea, loll.
Clint
...Dining on their patio provides a great view of the beach and people watching. The food, as expected was mediocre. Low grade, difficult to chew tuna made up the Ahi tuna poke bowl ($16). After a few bites the dish was abandoned and went untouched the rest of the meal. The Chinese chicken salad ($16) was enough to share and decent overall, but the sugary sweet dressing was a bit much. The kid’s cheese pizza was a plate sized pie cut into four pieces. My kid wasn’t crazy about the soft, doughy crust but did help himself to the cheese and sauce.

Beach front dining without having to request it! Fried Maui Onions with spicy sambal ketchup: These onion rings are not like typical onion rings. They are shoestring-like in texture, with perfect flavouring by itself, but the sambal ketchup is also fantas
