Review Uncle Bo's Pupu Bar & Grill - Honolulu

We didn't do a full meal this time but instead tried a bunch of different apps; the cheese bread is fresh, not too doughy and loaded with cheese. Also seasoned quite nicely. The calamari is breaded but not overly deep friend. Also very fresh. The dip it comes with is almost a soup like consistency but is very flavorful and unique! Not normally what you get with calamari but was absolutely delicious. A really nice atmosphere as well if you want to get dressed up

Best food we had while in Waikiki. Have told our friends who will be visiting to eat here. We had crab cakes, calamari, dynamite shrimp, caprese toast bites and pig sliders. Hobos for dessert. We couldn't fault a single thing.

Wonderful place. Atmosphere, service and taste. The best food I’ve had on my trip to Oahu. Worth the price. Share plates to get a taste of everything.

Grab some friends and grab some Pupus. You need some folks with you to try it all! My favorites are the Boca Rota, seafood trap, Bo’s Big Nachos and dynamite shrimp. When I first tried the Boca Rota I thought heavenly breadsticks. I was reluctant at first to order just “breadsticks” but the tender prime rib and sautéed mushrooms are a wonderful meal! I’ve since tried the Boca Rota pizza but I prefer the breadsticks. They just have the right amount of everything. The seafood trap is delicious from shrimp to octopus, everything is cooked perfectly. I often get just pupus, but their ribeyes are equally to die for. It’s the perfect amount of juiciness with a great cute of meat. The dessert menu should be overlooked so save some room. We love ordering Hobo’s. The beignets are warm and wonderful with the vanilla ice cream. These are not to be missed! Overall lots of food and very reasonable prices for Hawaii. I’ve also tried Uncle Bo’s on the North Shore and loved it!

I love visiting local restaurants when traveling. Uncle Bo's popped up in a search for dinner near Waikiki. From our hotel, which was a few blocks from the beach, we had about a 15 minute walk. Not terrible by any means, and the walk was safe, well lit and there were sidewalks. From the outside, Uncle Bo's doesn't appear to be the nicest of places, but looks can be deceiving. When we walked in to the restaurant, we were surprised to see a lovely establishment. Kind of gave me speakeasy or high end supper club vibes. I made a reservation ahead of time, which is what I always recommend whenever traveling. We were seated right on time. The staff were friendly and attentive. The menu is very diverse, plenty of options. We ordered the Spinach Dip to start and the Chicken Alfredo and Crab Salad for entrees. All of the dishes were excellent. I would say some of the menu items the prices can be quite steep, but we for sure had leftovers that we saved for another meal. They also have quite an extensive drink menu. If you are looking for nice local restaurant with a variety of menu options, add this to your list of Honolulu must tries.

We came off of recommendations from multiple friends. The fish was amazing, like butter!!! The portion sizing is ridiculous it's so difficult to finish. You will leave well beyond stuffed. Drinks were ok, not crazy special. Great little spot for sure!

Great for a chill evening out and wanting a large variety of food options. The boca rota was my groups favorite that we had to order two! Parking is convenient and across the street

Service was amazing the food was out of this world sooo good. Totally worth the trip.

Best local place for pupu's, seafood, pastas, pizza and a great bar. This is the go-to place away from tourist traps in Waikiki. $$. Parking on side streets

I will ALWAYS recommend this place and in fact have done so to visitors who come into my place of business. (I overhear them talking about where to go to eat!) Everyone, from the hostesses, bartenders, waitstaff (even the owners!) are so friendly and accommodating! The food is awesome! Faves are the Thai clams, the Bocca Rota and Dynamite Shrimp. Best part is, this is like a local "Cheers bar," we've been there many times but not like every week or month, but when we do go, the owner and bartender remembers us! Makes us feel like "family" in a way! Lol! Highly recommend this place!

What a phenomenal place!!! Best food around. We wanted to find a local place and this was it. Can’t say enough about it- except this is a “must try” place.

The food was delicious and the portions were extremely generous. Our server tried to tell us it was a lot of food, but we agreed that we could box up what was left over. From the Lava Flow cocktail that was recommended by our local friend Nick to the Beet Salad, through the Boca Rota AND Boca Rota Pizza to the 1/2 order (wisely suggested by our server) of HOBOS which are beignets made with taro flour served with vanilla ice cream and a honey sauce for dipping, we were delighted by the service, presentation, flavor and abundance of what was served. After 8:30 pm, the lights were dimmed and the music volume increased. The lighted menues came out and the vibe became a little more "funky." It seems to be popular with both locals and tourists.

Great food and service...do. It be deterred by the facade the inside is upscale and modern... We had the pork belly appetizer which was perfectly cooked and then a seafood one with a light broth with clams, squid, scallops and shrimp with leeks and tomatoes. Then entrees were fish tacos and SOS and seafood dish in a velvety cream sauce... A must do

Delicious food, good portions and friendly service. I was told about this place from friends and hotel staff and they didn’t disappoint. We will go there again before we leave. Worth the trip

Wish we had found this place sooner. Awesome food and service. Would definitely recommend.

One of our favorite stops. Great cocktails and food to match. They are busy so prepare to wait for a table. We ate at the bar and really enjoyed everything. We started with the nut lettuce wraps, which were excellent. The dynamite shrimp which had a lot of flavor and well balanced. Finished off the evening with the seared ahi tuna and a beet salad. Great stop!

Awesome place to get pupu snacks. He we not seen an episode of Cut Throat Kitchen where the chefs had to make pupu platters we would have never know what they are. Funny but true story. Curiosity got the best of me when I saw the name Uncle Bo's Pupu Bar & Grill. We ordered 4 platters and the waitress said it might take some time for our food to come due to being a busy time. Instead the food came surprisingly quick and tasted great. All four pupus were different but all tasted great. Before we were even done with our meals we were planning what to order when we came back. Great food and great service!

Out standing food and service. Don’t let the front of the building fool you as the inside is amazing the the food is worth the money. Well done!

Uncle Bo's was on our list to visit during our recent trip to Hawaii. We arrived to a full house but the wonderful staff said if we could eat our meal and be out in one hour then they would serve us! The food was amazing and think I can safely say that it was my favourite meal during our 10 day stay. The rest of the family, including the 2 grandkids would agree. Thank you for treating us kiwis so well.

The food here was so good. Definitely one of the best places to eat in Oahu. Loved it.

Best food in hawaii (from two foodies from the uk who have been here a while and sampled a lot!). This was seriously good food. Every thing was beautifully and thoughtfully cooked. And friendly service. Amazing. Everyone should go.

Excellent customer service ! Everyone there are so pleasant ! I really loved the food , the ambiance and everything about this place ❤️ We celebrated my cousins 50th Birthday & everything was perfect ! Definitely coming back !!

Little hole in the wall on the outside, not at all like that on the inside! The food was awesome! Had the SOS, 6 little piggies, poke, sliders and fish tacos. Poke was new to us but we'll received. My son said the sliders were "ok". The rest was AMAZING!
Chris Tapper
Excellent advice from several locals to come here. Bartender was awesome, covering service for not only his bar, but the service well also. People were very nice, and everything tasted unique and excellent. We had the seafood bowl, dynamite shrimp, and spicy tuna bowl. I would probably go there everyday if I lived here.

Great pupus, great service, atmosphere was also good all in all great place to kick it and quench the thirst.

The service is really really good there. The food was ok. We ordered the rib eye medium rare and came out medium, the eye fillet medium and came out medium rare. The crab cake salad was as expected, nothing super exciting. We did get free dessert which is the taro beignets w/ frangelico sauce and vanilla icecream. That was pretty good!

This was recommended by someone at our hotel and it was spot on. Located on Kapahulu Avenue near downtown Waikiki, it looks to be small from the outside but is rather big inside with a front and back dining room. All the servers were friendly and courteous and the menu had a lot to offer many palates. The seafood dishes came out hot and were flavorful. The prices were higher than I was told, I wonder if they have a weekday and weekend menu but it was still worth it. There were many locals as well as tourists and when we finished, there was a good sized waiting line. They take reservations so make one. No on-site parking but there's a public lot across the street.

We ordered the S.O.S (similar to a seafood bisque with crab meat, lobster meat, mussels, prawns and scallops) and the roasted beef salad. The S.O.S was delightful, the soup base was creamy and buttery, it really made the seafood nice and tender and gave it great flavour. The scallops were wobbling on the plate and simply melt in the mouth good! The roasted very salad however was a bit of a let down, it was dressed sparingly and could've used more walnuts & goats cheese and less croutons. Overall it was an enjoyable dinner but we should have probably ordered a seafood, steak or pasta instead of the salad. Portions here are also very generous! We struggled to finish our meals.

We were looking for a good local fish place. It did not have much road appeal and we considered not stopping. However, the service was awesome, lots of food, and the fish was excellent. No one in our party of 6 were disappointed or hungry afterwards.

A bit disappointed at Uncle Bo's as it was recommended by a local and other reviews. The fried rice was below average, no where near as good as Old Street Inn. The sashimi came without any soy sauce or wasabi. Prime rib was large, but wasn't that tasty, nor were the sides that came with it. The Poca Roca was the highlight of the meal... And that says a lot

It really makes me made when places change a classic dish like clam chowder - bacon does not go I clam chowder. Certainly having a waitress serving it to me once I notify her that I'm a pescatarian... I didn't eat the chowder but I could see from playing with it while waiting on my rude waitress that there is barely clam in it... It's basically bacon and potato soup. The bacon looked undercooked and disgusting too. My husband, who doesn't have dietary restrictions, ordered the pork nachos. Biggest issue is that he had a very hard time finding the pork...come to find, they put the 1oz of pork on the plate under the nachos... In picture... Yup no pork on top of the chips at all... And barely any pork at all. Calamari was extremely overcooked and chewy... Service was crap..: will not recommend nor return.

Uncle Bo's Pupu Bar & Grill offers a pu pu menu with many delicious items that are perfect for sharing. They also offer main courses such as steaks, seafood dishes, pizzas, pastas, as well as a kids menu. We learned about this restaurant online after seeing many great reviews for their pu pu menu.

A great local place to eat with friends! The calamari is a must and the fish dishes are amazing!! Try the HOBO dessert!! You'll love me for it!!

Lovely anniversary dinner at Uncle Bo's. Definitely don't judge a book by its cover with this one - don't let the exterior fool you as the interior is lovely.
Loved the Dynamite Shrimp - would happily have eaten another plate of it.
The walnut shrimp lettuce cups were also amazing.
If you still have room give the 6 Little Piggies a go as well.

All in all a lovely delicious night out.

Visited Uncle Bo's last night based on several positive reviews, we made a booking via email and they confirmed promptly
I will go with the bad first, the BREAD,
All the terrific juices and sauces that accompany the food deserve better than sugar laden dough! Other than that..... Great, go to Uncle Bo's for all that the place offers
Awesome food and service, we will be going back before returning to Oz

Loved Uncle Bo's

Well worth heading out of town a little for this great eating spot. Our tour guide recommended we go there and we were not disappointed. In a group of four everyone was raving about their meals. We shared a Dynamite Shrimp - amazing! For Main we had the SOS and Pork Sliders both were so good. Make sure if you're in town you get to Uncle Bo's and thanks Bon Jovi for the recommendation

The food was delicious, and we all had a great time at Uncle Bo's!

Pleasant surprise. We drove by this place many times and decided to give it a try. The outside decor is nothing to write home about. It looks like a tacky old restaurant. But once you step in side you find a sophisticated modern fusion restaurant. Service was great, the staff was very attentive. Food was also very good. We had the Soup Du Jour- a very light clear spicy broth with shrimp and fresh vegetables, done nicely. For dinner my wife had the Grilled Salmon. You had a choice of garlic mash potatoes, pasta, or wedge fries plus steamed vegetables. The salmon was seasoned nicely, not overpowering. The whole dish was dine nicely. The portion size was good. I had the Spicy Bakes Opah Mauna Kea with garlic mashed potatoes. The dish was well presented and tasty. The fish was done well and the sauce complimented thee fish. Overall it was a good meal and a pleasant surprise.

-----07 Nov, 2014-----

Grilled Salmon. Ecletic with good food. This was a good place for food and the service was good as well. It was a bit loud with a young crowd at it but still well worth it for the food.

This was my favorite place to eat in Waikiki. It was recommended to me by an islander who was born and raised here. The food is not only delicious and first class, the ambiance is very cool and classy .... not what you expect from the outside appearance. The dynamite shrimp is a must-try. We ordered 5 different appetizers, and I loved them all! My one complaint is that they need to class up the waitresses attire. They are very hooters-girl-esque outfits with booty shorts and plummeting cleavage. My friends and I couldn't help but stare at out waitress's big fake ridiculous cleavage all night. Doesn't fit the ambiance at all. Kinda tasteless. But GO HERE! Food is amazing.

Fantastic. Spent an evening at Uncle Bo's whilst in Oahu a few weeks ago, based on a recommendation from someone we met on the beach at The Kahala. It was well worthwhile...great atmosphere, great bar, great food, great service. If we find ourselves back the again, we will definitely spend more time there.
The Dynamite Shrimp is a must and the fish and steak and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately the servings are so big, it was too hard to have sweets!

This place is fantastic. We went for dinner and I wanted to order everything on the menu. We asked the waitress for suggestions and she picked out great dishes for us. At the end of dinner we had forgotten a packet of pictures we has just developed on the table. Someone from the restaurant tracked us down about 5 blocks away to make sure they were returned to us. Overall great experience.

Place was packed!!! Worth the wait for sure. Trendy but full of Aloha! We had Pupu's for dinner. Six Little Piggies, Roasted Beet Salad, Hamachi Sashimi and Ahi Katsu.... It was all off the chain!!! Definitely will return. I now have a new uncle and his name is Bo. Mahalo!

Had dinner at Uncle Bo's this evening. Service was good. Appetizer was awesome (Shrimp). Main course, mine (catch of the day) was outstanding. Wife ordered sea bass... Way too "fishy;" glad my portion was way too generous. Server was very understanding and took sea bass off the check. Great atmosphere!

Flawed but good. Our hotel recommended this restaurant and made our reservations. What people say online here is true: it is trendy, loud, they rush the food out and the vegetable sides aren't that good. However, the seafood is excellent. The ahi poke contained nearly a pound of fish, for ten dollars, and was amazing. My sea bass was perfectly cooked, as was my partner's salmon. Really a delicious meal and a fun place. It has its flaws, but I would go back.

Yuck!. The staff at the front desk of our hotel recommended Uncle Bo's as a good local seafood restaurant so we had high hopes going in. It was quite a busy night and we were told there would be an hour wait so we killed time by walking around and having a drink nearby. When we went back an hour later we were told to wait and we would be seated soon. After seeing many people walk in and being seated straight away my boyfriend finally complained and miraculously a table opened up.

Once we finally ordered, the staff was actually very attentive and quick. It was a while ago so I can't remember exactly what I ordered but it was one of the worst things I've tried in a long time. My fish was swimming in this orange sauce (I always have to question too much sauce, what is it hiding?!) that tasted like processed cheese melted on top. I had one mouthfull and sent it back and had completely lost my appetite. Thankfully I wasn't charged but I still felt bad for the poor little fish who lost its life. He definitely deserved a better end!

Interesting Flavor Combinations. Extensive menu features flavor combinations unlike anything i have seen. Something like a Hawaiian-Japanese-Italian fusion (especially in the case of the Boca Rota: garlic cheesy bread with a beef and mushroom 'gravy').

Great food but they RUSH it out. We hadn't even finished our appetizers when they brought out our main entrees. i like to believe that a a good restaurant knows how to dance the line of fast/slow service (aka- knowing when to fire up a dish, check in on a customer, and fill the water glasses) in addition to serving quality food, and this place certainly lacked the former.

Best Meals. After a week and a half of crappy oversized, cheese covered, mash potato piled, butter soaked, over priced meals, we were finally recommended this place. To our delight the place had a very funky decor, food was fresh, tasty and not over priced. The variety was great. I had a fillet mignon. My vegetables were steamed and not coated in butter. It was also served with thick steak fries not mash. My husband had a plate of a seared tuna which tasted amazing and only cost about $10AUD. People here were lovely and not just tourists. Met some friendly locals. We returned again on our last night to ensure another good feed and were even more impressed. My husband ordered Atlantic King Crab claws/legs and they were delicious. Cooked perfecty. Four legs full legs. Was served wth steamed veg. All in all I'm recommending this place to everyone i know that's intending to travel to Waikiki.

First time there was very satisfy.Service was well served.:)

Great Food. Great food at a decent price. You have to try the Baked Opah Muanakea, best thing on the menu. Crabcakes, dynamite shimp, and fried ice cream are winners too. Only thing that needs improvement are the vegetables that come with entrees.
Duane Henry
Oily and boring. Pity because location and decor work.
Steve Haas
Loud, slow service! Very average food. Sort of a hip crowd.. But not really. Over rated!!!!!

Good local food. Great place for out-of-towners looking for some good local food. Not too expensive. Similar to Side Street for tasty eats. Sometimes crowded. Check for reservations.

Heard about this place from my niece and have been wanting to check it out so this past weekend we went and all I can say is I'm glad we did. We did not have any reservations but the staff were very accomodating (we were seated within 5 minutes). The crab cake was awesome and so was the calamari. My nieces ordered a pasta dish & shrimp scampi and they loves it. I highly recommend Uncle Bo's...great food and awesome service. Oh, also forgot to mention that what it looks on the outside is not what you'll see on the inside. Decor is beautiful! I rate it 5*'s!

Great decor and good service. Drinks are good--selection is great and the crowd is fun. The food isn't great though which is unfortunate. Come here for the evening hang out and get a few drinks and appetizers.

Great Late Night Dining Option for the "In Crowd". Just as I was, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the interior, not what you would expect from looking at the exterior :)
Staff is very friendly and very attentive! I love that Uncle Bo, himself, comes out from the kitchen to check on guests.
Musts: Besides the Thai-Style Steamer Clams, the Cajun Seared Ahi with Honey Glaze, Meat Lover's Pizza, Uncle Bo's Oyster Shooters, and Walnut Shrimp Wraps are among my "usuals."

The menu is very extensive, so there's something for everyone - seafood, vegetarian dishes, chicken, salads, and more.

In addition to the above, our table ordered a lot more items that I didn't get a chance to take a picture of, such as the Spinach Salad, Spinach Artichoke Crab Dip, Seafood Ceviche and Boca Rota.

Of the pupus we ordered, my favorite was the Nachos - crispy won ton chips loaded with toppings like ham, kalua pig, cheese, and onions.

Of the two desserts we ordered, my favorite was the HoBos (taro beignets). It was delicious!

Uncle Bo's is a great plac

This was a pretty good shrimp dish, the shrimp were firm, seasoned, and cooked right. The garlic chili aioli was pretty mild. I couldn’t really taste any heat from the chilis, but I could taste garlic. The parmesan panko was tasty, but it became soggy pretty quickly from the aioli.
