I mean it's Mexican food in Hawaii, so keep that in mind. Server got our order wrong but we didn't sweat it, we gave it to the homeless man sitting outside the front door. Chips and salsa are good. Only issue is there is no air conditioning in the restaurant and it was hot and muggy. I felt like I was in the Amazon jungle eating. Get some A/C and I'll be back and give you another star.

Delicious! Chips and salsa are homemade. The green salsa is SPICY, but so worth the pain! Chicken mole is one of the best I've ever had. Flan did not disappoint either! Parking may be hard to find but this place is worth it!!

The food here is good, enchiladas are delish and moist, chicken is not dry like others. They are pricey but they will give you a good portion. They are located in a strip mall, and has limited public parking, We went there monday, Service is slow, feels like they only have 2 servers, serving 10-15 tables. They spray sanitizer on the tables, after clearing it, which is nice. Definitely will eat here again.

Love this place!
I always get the cheese enchilada with beans & rice. I have sampled many things over the last 25 years here and all were delicious. Best margaritas.
My favorite Mexican restaurant in the entire US. Still family owned and run.

A must stop for weary travelers wanting great-tasting real food. Chicken flautas with quesadilla were delicious. Large portions, could share if you’re lighter on servings. Very respectful, clean, hard-working staff. Popular with families, also well stocked bar. Location is ideal to get the Hilo feel, and look across to the Pacific — likely to catch a rainbow. 🤙🏼🤙🏼

I ordered take out tonight. Our usual Chili Verde plate and Tamale w/Enchilada plate. Got it home, kicked back on the lanai with a cold Corona and some sweet Summer Jazz music and.......Bam!!!! The meal was missing our tortillas and salsa. What a bummer. I called to let them know and they apologized. Anyway! I still give them a 5 star because even without my tortillas..... Rubens makes the best damn Chili Verde in Hawaii. It just sucks to have to eat it with a fork.

REVIEW UPDATE: The rice & beans are really good today! My chicken Mole is excellent. The guac is exceptionally good today as well. It's all very good.
So growing up on Mexican food in Arizona, I am rather particular. I have been here twice, here's what I have to say: shredded beef taco is actually really good despite the fact that it's not deep fried like I'm used to. The machaca beef is delicious and the shell is light and crispy. The salsa & green hot sauce are pretty good, just needed a bunch of salt added. The Chili relleno is actually quite nice but the beans & rice are both sub-par. The Carne asada had great texture but no flavor. The people are great and the place is really cute. It’s fairly expensive but it’s down town so I guess that’s to be expected. All in all, without better options this will probably be my go-to in Hilo when I want a full sit down Mexican restaurant experience.

So we took a chance on “Mexican food” found Reuben’s. Not having any expectations, it was surprisingly very close! We ordered Chili Verde, Lengua Taco, Chili Relleno, Pork Tamale, all came with rice & beans, taco was al la cart. Drinks were good too. Enjoy 😉

On our quest to find the best Mexican restaurant in our travels this was pretty good. Food was tasty, portions were generous, and prices decent for Hawaii. You had to pay extra for the salsa and chips and the chips weren't particularly crisp and the salsa was watery. We had flautas, enchiladas, and quesadilla. Okay, but not exceptional.

The servers work as a team to ensure all guests are promptly taken care of.
5 in my party, and all reported the food was great!

My husband and I moved here from Los Angeles and were missing Mexican food. I remembered this place from my high school days and that my friend really liked it. We decided to get takeout yesterday, and it completely hit the spot! The food was very tasty! I had the #16-two crab enchiladas. My mom had the chile relleno small plate, and my husband had the #6-two soft tacos (chicken) plate. We all enjoyed our meals and said that we will add this to our list of regular takeout places. Don't expect "fine-dining" here- just good, "hole-in-the wall" tasty food. Highly recommend!

Originally was gonna go to pineapples to grab a bite but the wait time was over an hour, came here and wow the food was so delicious I forgot to get a pic lol best quality food we’ve had in all of Hilo. Our server angel with the long braids was really sweet too. I’m gonna go to sleep dreaming of this chicken quesadilla fr

The food was great. Their green hot sauce had great flavor. Their deluxe nachos are huge! Would want to share this plate. The #1 Carne Asada was cooked perfectly and the rice and beans tasted like home cooked meal! Very delicious! The prices are very reasonable! The only downside was our waitress was very nice, but was a little slow on following up with us.

My husband just moved here from Mexico a few months ago and we did NOT expect to get decent Mexican on the island, but this place was great. Even the mole was good and that’s hard to get right.

Reuben's Mexican Food, we had the Beef Enchiladas w/Beans & Rice, also had a Cheese Quesadilla, both were OK. Service was good and quick.

Very chill spot with great staff and food. Been around 42 years they must be doing something right! What keeps me coming back is the spicy green salsa made fresh daily....soooooo good.

What? Great Mexican food in Hilo HI ??You bet! Started with house fried tortilla chips and green salsa with lots of garlic! Mmmmm! And an excellent Margarita with Patron silver. Guacamole is delicious with tomatoes and chunks of avocado, nicely seasoned. Hubby had fried pork/potato tacos and loved them! But oh my, the refried beans and rice, I know! Usually you leave the beans on the plate, but not these beans! Delicious and well seasoned and flavorful! And my chili relleno was the best I've ever had! Whatever they fried it in, I'm on board! Yummo!!!! We love Luquins in Pahoa but now we have a fave in Hilo Town!

I really like Reuben's , yep the lady has an original personality and I like her. The food is awesome, I haven't ordered anything I was disappointed in. I live on the Kona side and it's worth the drive. The salsa is Hot and I buy a quart every time to bring home. I'll be back!

Amazing service, food and margaritas!! The best Mexican food I have had in a long time.

After years of experiencing authentic Mexican food in Mexico & So Cal, I have been chasing the dream in the Pacific Northwest and even Hawaii. Reubens has nailed it.

Best mexican good i ate since being back from california.. Very close to cali style mexican food i ate by far... One of my favorite resturants here on da bigisland

Our absolute favorite!! We often make special trips from pahoa to go to Reubens. (There's a Mexican resturant in Pahoa that people usually drive long distances to eat at, but we like Reubens much more! ) We've went with just two of us and and with all 6 children, always being very happy with the service provided! Love that they have a children's menu with chicken nuggets, juice box and ice cream! It's so easy to please picky children and still satisfy our Mexican food cravings. You MUST try their lava cake and fried ice cream, they also have the best flan. & their Ling Hing Mui margaritas are amazing!!

Amazingly different reviews. I've been a customer for almost 20 years and always have been well treated my staff and owners. Food is good quality and reasonably priced. I really think the negative comments are BS.

Love their beans and guacamole! I usually order the chicken flauta. Never disappointed.

OMG service and food is so terrible. To the point of being ridiculous. I mean, it's been years. The owners don't seem to care and almost appear condescending. Truly dislike this place.

Reuben's Ruins!. At Reuben's don't forget to put the flag up if you want to be served (something they don't tell you when you're seated). We waited for our server to take our order and watched as several tables (that arrived after we did) received their orders! Finally when the server came over to our table she impatiently explained that we should have put our flag up if we needed service. Well, no other restaurant in the world has this protocol so how could she expect we would know that? The other server munched on her lunch as she served her tables. To say that is totally unprofessional is an understatement. We walked away gouged, gassy and grossed out. $40 for two lunch entrees and an afternoon asphyxiating on post-taco farts. Nasty. Never again! Besides, "Reuben" is a German name. WTH?

I could've made better, more authentic, Mexican food with my hand tied behind my back and a blindfold on. If you're going to Reuben's for the food-DONT waste your time, money or appetite. It's flavorless, seemingly mass produced microwaved food that lacks authenticity and passion of any kind. If you're going for the bar and their "famous" margaritas-good for you. Maybe after you've had a few you might actually start to like their food.

If you are in the mood for Mexican.... ... then you just might be disappointed. The location is superior - Hilo Bay front is awesome. Sadly, it goes straight downhill from there.

If you truly crave Mexican food, drive up to Keaa'u. Go to the Farmer's Market, and get anything on the menu of the little Mexican place on the right hand corner. This guy goes fishing in the middle of the night, and serves up his catch in plates or burritos. Yum.

Reuben's is sort of there for the cruise ship passengers who elect to spend the day walking the Bay Front instead of venturing up the mountain to see the volcano. It's just not very good, and survives because people like Mexican food, and must forgive it its shortcomings because it's in Hawaii...

Best Bay Front dining in Hilo is Cafe Pesto.

Best Mexican food in the islands! Had the chile verde nacho deluxe, which was enough to feed 3-4 peole. And their magaritas are great too. I have to go there every time I'm in Hilo.

I love their Lilikoi Magaritas

Seems like a good mexican food place until you taste the food. The Mexican rice was a poor attempt, beans were scraped from the bottom of a burnt pan and the tacos were at best poor ( seemed like store bought taco shells). Margaritas were good although served in a glass

You can't beat the food or the price! Not fancy surroundings, sometimes a bit noisy but always GREAT food!

We took a 10 day vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii from May 12-21, 2010. I had plotted out a bunch of restaurants to visit while we were there based on reviews on Urbanspoon and recommendations in the "Big Island Revealed" book. For the most part, we h

...they serve a great Lilikoi margarita (I stole a sip of Dan's), the service was quick, and the food was good at a good price.
