Wife and I went to Maui to ride the Road to Hana. Starving and the two BBQ joints we had planned to eat at were closed. Eric was open and man am I glad we stopped. We catch all our own fish and hardly ever eat fish out……very picky……..fish was freakin outstanding!! When he says it’s fresh……..it’s REAL fresh…..great batter and fried to perfection!! Enjoyed visiting with Eric and the coconut on the shrimp was local and freshly shredded. Absolutely loved it!!
We ordered the only 2 items on the menu. Coconut Shrimp and Fried Fish … they were both good. The fish was our fave, very fresh. The downside was that they over charged. I mean $25 for 4 pieces of coconut shrimp and fries … it’s a bit much.
Fresh Blue Marlin and Coconut Shrimp. The batter for the fish was light and airy and delicious. The fish was super fresh. The coconut shrimp was good sized and had a great flavor without being too sweet. The tarter, cocktail sauce, and the sweet chili sauce was all on point. The owner was super friendly.
We got the combo that came with fried fish and coconut shrimp. The fish was delicious! It was fried perfectly on the outside and the fish inside treated fresh and tender. The coconut shrimp was decent too but I liked the fish the best. It's a pretty large plate so we split it between the two of us for lunch. This is a good stop if you're hungry on the road to hana!
Not alot of places to eat on the road to Hana but this is a gem. Not highly visible but worth the hunt. The coconut shrimp is perfect. Don't be in a hurry because they get busy but the fresh shrimp only took 10 minutes or so. Don't be surprised if the parking lot is full, in which case stop when you come back. Cash only so be prepared.
I was pleasantly surprised by how good Island Chef fish & chips were. The setup was modest and unassuming, but the owner was very confident in his product, which I respect. Definitely the best fried fish I had on Maui. The fish was so fresh, the batter was light and airy. I would actually drive the Road to Hana all over to eat here again.
The coconut shrimp is sooo good. The coconut they use for the shrimp is so fresh and delicious. Recommend it!
The coconut shrimp here was very good but my family asked for five orders and the woman refused. She said if she sold us five then she would run out so we could only have four and one order of fish and chips. This struck me as...odd to say the least. The fries also seemed like they were frozen. For $20 I would have expected more of them, but the coconut shrimp made it worth it.
Stopped here while driving through on the Hana HWY. the owner is friendly and laid back. The only thing available today was fish and chips so we can’t comment on the other food. Wish they had the Chinese and coconut shrimp but settle for fish and chips (fries). The fish is fresh and he does his homemade batter, breading was good. Would recommend
Ate here on the way to Hana. Food was good, although wait was a little long as we were there only ones there other than a couple who already had the food at the table. I got the coconut shrimp and it was great, just not a big portion.
My coconut shrimp was amazing. The gentleman making the food was really friendly even though I attempted to order garlic shrimp.... He even gave me a sample of the fish on my plate. As good as the shrimp was I wished I'd ordered the fish and chips because it melted in my mouth. I believe the fish of the day was Ono which lived up to its name
Stopped there on the road to Hana for a late lunch. Ordered a plate of coconut shrimps, and as the lady suggested, a plate is enough for 2! She even threw in 2 small pieces of fried fish so we could try it. Such a nice lady, we definitely recommend!
Highly highly recommend stopping here on the road to Hana and trying the fish and chips or coconut shrimp. The best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten (and I eat a LOT of it everywhere I go). The fish we had was a Maui bass and it was so fresh and flavorful. The coconut shrimp were massive with perfectly toasted coconut shavings.
Supporting a local business. Came in today only fish left unfortunately. I was looking forward to the shrimp. But was really surprised at the fish! I came in with level set expectations and was impressed. Yes it's a bit pricey. The island chef was friendly and hooked me up with 6 fish. They hit the spot!
Island Chef has the best coconut shrimp I have ever had in my life. The fish and chips were also excellent. All meals have freshcaught fish from that morning and the lemons come from the owners own trees.
It’s out of the way (unless you are on the road to Hana) but it’s very much worth it.
On the way back to Kihei on the Hana Hwy, we enjoyed the coconut shrimp and a bonus piece of the blue marlin caught same morning, compliments of the chef. The coconut tasted very fresh and the blue marlin still tasted like the sea! The covered eating area was needed for the couple of surprise downpours and overall cute vibes. Island Chef only accepts cash, and doesn’t sell drinks so plan accordingly. The price was more than some restaurants we ate on Maui however this is a great place to get a meal while you’re on the road to Hana.
Good food and generous portions. The workers are friendly and helpful. This place is cash only. A great stop on the Road to Hana.
Delicious! Best fish and chips I've ever had (sorry, Cape Cod!) Blue Marlin and I had some of my husband's coconut shrimp. I don't even like shrimp and I LOVED these! Owner/Chef was super cool.
