Hands down the best place to get fresh and tasty seafood in Hammonton. The owners really care about serving the freshest and highest quality fish. The shrimp are awesome and the garlic crabs are amazing. It never smells like a fish store in there either, which is a big plus in my book.
My family and I have been patrons of Vitale’s Seafood since it opened in the early 1980s. They are the only fish/seafood market in the area, and they really are a hidden treasure, as they are difficult to find if you do not know where you are looking (or know the easiest path to get into the parking lot).
Their seafood is always fresh, and displayed for all to see. I particularly love their Scottish Salmon, which is deep orange color and extremely flavorful. It grills extremely well, and can hold up to marinades. I am also a huge fan of their littleneck clams, which I steam in a fried garlic, Italian parsley and tomato broth and serve over thin pasta like cappellini.
Besides their fresh seafood, they also have premade items, such as their crab cakes. For crab cakes that you can take home, these *are* the best that I have ever had. They have various flavors (Debbie’s, named after the wife owner of the business) is a little more spicy, while Grandma’s is a bit more traditionally seasoned. They also have broiled ones that are healthier.
Their soups are also incredible, and you can buy them frozen by the pint. My favorite is the seafood chowder, and I beg for my parents to buy it whenever I come to visit.
Tony, Debbie, their son and other workers are great. They are experts at cutting the fish (Tony actually has won the Samuel’s Seafood award for his talents), and can tell you how to prepare anything they carry. They always do it with a smile, and if you’re a regular, a great sense of humor.
As they are a little hard to find, please go out of your way to do so. This hidden treasure needs to be shared with all of southern New Jersey!
